The Truth: Selfie Films Have Gained Widespread Acceptance As A Dramatic Art Form Says Award Winning Psychologist And Selfie Film Maker Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is an award winning Selfie Filmmaker, Positive Psychologist and podcaster who helps us overcome anxiety and alienation through multiple media channels.

Every now and then something happens that changes how we approach a specific art form. Changes in the film industry seem to happen in spurts. As technology improves, new techniques and ideas gain widespread acceptance. Seldom however do we see a change that is a real paradigm shift - something so different and cutting-edge as to transform the lens through which we view the entire industry. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein may be on the verge of creating such a change with her award winning, dramatic selfie films.

Month after month for the last few years Dr. Holstein has been winning award after award for her "selfies as drama" conceptual films - over 90 to date. These are not just selfie films. They have at their core positive psychology principles that only Dr. Holstein can bring to the table.

"Right now, the youth in our country have many pressures that they are dealing with," Dr. Holstein stated. "These include the pandemic and the anxieties and depression that can affect many kids who are struggling with virtual learning, loss of normal social interactions, loneliness and more. So many other pressures also: fear of getting sick or losing a loved one or friend to Covid. And other issues: bullies, drugs, college loan debts, financial wows at home, homelessness and more. But the truth is there is a real opportunity for young people coming out of the pandemic.

"As a pioneer in Positive Psychology (THE ENCHANTED SELF, A POSITIVE THERAPY), writing the first book for women and their therapists in mental health care using positive psychology principles, my experience has seasoned me to be also a pioneer in Selfie Films designed to uplift the human spirit and to facilitate discussion and reactions leading to positive change and better mental health," Dr. Holstein stated.

"After all, what is the purpose of psychology? It is to understand the human mind and then to help people achieve good mental health. Understanding the mind, the way we think and feel, gives psychologists an edge in helping people as we can not only give advice and support, but can help with the strategies and steps necessary to feel better.

"What can I do with my training to help kids and parents? Of course I can give a lecture or write a paper. But drama and storytelling are often much more effective than those options. Drama, since ancient times, has awakened people to what they need to do with their lives and how to handle themselves. That’s what I am doing in making Selfie films that bring to light many adolescent problems in a way that penetrates without leading to despair.

"I am thrilled to be making Selfie films as drama that can successfully compete artistically in film festivals (my films have been selected and or won awards at over 90 film festivals and competitions on five continents.

"But more importantly they can also be used as important educational tools in and out of the classroom to assist in opening the doors to better mental health for kids, tweens and teens. Let me give an example, ‘The Truth, a Short Film’ is made up of sixteen scenes filmed by the star, Cassidy Terracciano, on her cell phone. Directed by me, Cassidy, left by herself to film, using her smartphone and my script, brings to life scenes adapted from my book, 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween'.

"Watching the film we experience an intimacy with the actress that draws us in and heightens the mood for discussing relevant issues that kids face. Processing my films can take place directly after seeing them and/or later as certain issues such as falling in love or loss of friends sink in.

"Why does selfie filming engage the viewer so deeply? Like most of us, left alone in the shower we reach our ultimate singing voice, I believe that directing and then letting kids do the filming by themselves without a crew watching allows a deeper level of emotions to be transmitted from actor to reactor. Getting psychologically instructive messages that help with important coming of age issues that kids face is what selfie dramatic filmmaking is all about.

"Nothing is trivial when we are growing up. A crush that goes bad, a decision to move to a new town, friends left behind, parents fighting or maybe a divorce, family secrets, friends teasing or bullying, all of these situations and many more can lead to a mental health crisis for a particular child.

Selfie drama films do not tell a dark story. My films are uplifting and entertaining. The central characters find workable and uplifting solutions to their problems. The audience laughs, groans, remembers when they were that age, and are ready to start important conversations. I believe that combining potentially serious coming of age subjects in a new form of selfie filmmaking will result in happier kids, more successful parenting and mental health care when necessary in a more timely fashion. Many of my films are available at Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/MRG-Collective-Selfie-Project/dp/B089781TKJ/ref=tmm_dvd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1602766903&sr=8-1.

Dr. Holstein's cutting edge presentations, most recently based on the Covid-19 pandemic issues, can be found on both Youtube, Vimeo and on the Roku channel and Amazon Fire TV, titled as 'The Enchanted Self Presents'.

Dr. Holstein recently created The Selfie Showcase, a new project emerging from The Selfie Project, that allows young people to voice their opinions on subjects that matter to young people. She is now accepting submissions from the public for the "Selfie Showcase" and is actively seeking change-makers and mental health professionals to appear on her monthly video podcasts.

The Selfie Showcase allows kids, teens, and young adults ages 13 to 18 to candidly express their concerns, worries, observations and possible solutions by creating selfie videos or films around important subjects, using a smartphone. Dr. Holstein's mission is to help rectify, in a number of ways, some of the issues young people face by giving them a chance to engage with others in meaningful ways about the anxiety and stress they must grapple with constantly.

Selected participants may appear on the Selfie Project Channel, available on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3uaOTcYF70z5CpBh11VoUQ. They will also appear in the Selfie Showcase on SelfieFilmmakers.com. They will receive a certificate of merit and may be invited to be on Holstein's monthly podcast or perhaps be a part of her next film. Full details, rules for submission and helpful hints can be accessed at the Selfie Filmmakers site at http://www.selfiefilmmakers.com/instructions.

Dr. Holstein's unique Selfie Films have taken many awards and have been shown in many film festivals and competitions. Most notable among these are:

Jody Sharpe, Award Winning Author Of Books About Angels, Announces New Video About Bullying Special Needs Children, Donation To LoveHouseKidsProgram.org

Sharpe's previously published books are riveting inspirational thrillers written in honor of her daughter Kate and her husband Steve. Her new video channel features angel stories and stories from her experience working with special needs children.

Award winning author Jody Sharpe has announced a new video now available on Youtube, in which she relates a story about seeing a special needs child bullied by an adult. The new video is available on her Youtube channel, 'Jody Sharpe The Angels On My Shoulder'. The new channel features stories of real world interaction with angels and stories about special needs children. Both subjects are held near and dear to Jody Sharpe's heart.

Sharpe has also donated copies of her latest children's book, 'When The Angel Sent Butterflies', to LoveHouseKidsProgram.org, whose mission includes, "To break the cycle of child abuse through helping children to cultivate purpose and values, develop life skills (such as acceptable communication and behavior, healthy boundaries, respecting self and others, discovering self-motivation, and rising above their situation), job training, and one-on-one counseling."

Sharpe worked with special needs kids for many years. In her latest book, 'Special Needs Children, The Angels On My Shoulder', she gives us a penetrating and remarkable look at her day to day interaction with her students that will likely be of interest to educators, counselors and parents. It is a book that will both entertain and inform.

"My life was enlightened and enriched teaching children with special needs," Sharpe stated. "Their different personalities taught me so much about their loving natures, love of life, and hopeful yearning to succeed despite their disabilities."

Jody is the author of five books. Her latest book, 'Special Needs Children, The Angels On My Shoulder', is as entertaining as it is illuminating. Readers will likely never look at special needs children in the same way again.

One Amazon review stated, "This book should be required reading for all teaching students; not just special needs teachers. This book has so much value in demonstrating the positive affects that teachers can have on students, and also the blessings that students provide to their teachers. It would show new teachers personal benefits which they may have not yet realized. It is heart-warming and adorable.; absolutely enjoyable for everyone. It is short, but effective, and I am sure that many other teachers have examples they could add . . ."

The new book follows her recently released children's book about angels, "When The Angel Sent Butterflies". The new book helps children understand that love from their parents and others surrounds them. Love conquers fear and believing that angels are near can help sweep any childhood fear away. This concept is presented in the book when Angel Ken sends Jones and Kate butterflies. The book, appropriate for ages 2 to 7, is now available at Amazon and Ingram.

Jody's works center on angels on earth and the expression of their love and protection through synchronicity. On the 'Tuesdays With The Angels' section of her site, Sharpe presents stories of real life encounters with angels. The stories are available at Sharpe's website at http://www.jodysharpe.com.

In Sharpe's earlier, highly acclaimed novels, angels take on human form and interact with humanity in a variety of ways:

Town of Angels - It is angel vs. bully in the town of Mystic Bay, California, where a well kept secret lies. Angels live as humans there. After angels appeared to three children all was blissful in the town full of psychics, and ordinary folk. But as a bully, Klaus Waxman, comes to town, Angel Ken Leighton, a storeowner, must carefully guide his flock of humans not to give to in to the bully’s efforts. As Klaus opens a store mocking the resident angels sightings, Angel Ken guides psychic Justine Greer and her family to thwart his efforts. And with the help of the indomitable oldest psychic in town, Madam Norma, the bully meets his match with soft voices and intuitive minds…

To Catch An Angel - Jody is also the author of 'To Catch An Angel', written in memory of her late husband Steve. In 'To Catch An Angel', miracles happen in Mystic Bay, California, the town with the psychic and angel vibe. Angels are calling. Psychic Maggie Malone returns home to find she's swept up in the miracle of it all. She can't imagine why her mother left or who her father might be. But these questions pale in comparison to the wonder of the angels. Maggie meets writer, Noah Greenstreet. They realize they've met before, but where? Maggie and Noah embark on a journey to find our world is all awash with angels.

The Angel's Daughter - A secret lies in Mystic Bay, California and only two people know it. First there’s Hannah, a tender curly headed half Angel Then there’s her father, Gabe, an effervescent, teddy bear of a full-blooded angel. And it’s up to Hannah to keep the secret safe but she’s made a colossal mistake telling her ex-boyfriend and writing professor, Sam Blakely. Now he’s written a book exposing the secret to the world.

Sharpe presents stories and interviews about angels in her 'Tuesdays With The Angels' blog series. She is now accepting submissions of angel stories for possible inclusion. She hopes to create a collection of angel stories that involve sightings of angels, interaction with angels, miraculous angel encounters and other types of accounts or stories. All submissions will be considered, but inclusion is not guaranteed. Stories may be submitted at http://bit.ly/2FV8amd.

Jody was chosen as a winner in the annual '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' Book Awards'. She was chosen from a field of hundreds of authors through a public voting process.

Jody Sharpe is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below, or by email at sharpejody76@gmail.com. Angel stories can be submitted at http://bit.ly/2FV8amd. All of her books are available at online book retailers. New quotes will be added every Tuesday to the 'Tuesdays With The Angels' section of her blog, which can be found at her website at http://www.JodySharpe.com.

Profile:

Jody Sharpe had a rewarding career as a Special Education teacher. Writing about angels became healing after losing her daughter and then her husband. The valuable lessons she learned about moving forward and loving life in the now have set her on a mission to tell the stories with love, humor and spiritual awakening. The fictitious town of Mystic Bay has given her an avenue to put characters and themes together hopefully enlightening the reader towards contemplation of the precious life and memories we are given.

Empowering The Victims Of Bullying - Bullying Can Be Overcome Says Award Winning Author Cheryl Williams In New Video

Williams, an award winning author, poet, film maker and musician released the new video for National Bullying Prevention Month.

Bullying, whether in the workplace, school or even home, is not a new problem. It is a problem that we must deal with today however. Bullying can take myriad forms and there are as many ways of attempting to handle the problem as there are ways of bullying. There is one solution, however, that never fails. That is the subject of a new video entitled ‘Empowering The Victims Of Bullying’, released by award winning author Cheryl Williams, who was once the target of bullying.

"When we think of bully awareness, we often focus our attention on the bully," Williams stated. "Since we can’t control the words or behaviors of another person, we must instead focus on how we respond to that person.

"As a victim of bullying myself, I had to find constructive, positive ways to help me cope with bullying, and move forward. I want to use this opportunity to empower those who’re victims of bullying. Always remember, despite what anyone says; You are amazing, special and unique. You are one of a kind. You matter.

"The poem 'Human' was written as way to help me unburden, to help me take back my strength, my self-esteem, my self-respect.

"I recently created a YouTube video featuring the beautiful, talented Soleil reciting this poem. Soleil has also experienced the effects of bullying, and has turned the negative into positive by empowering her mind everyday to rise above.

"My son Kyle Williams, aka KDoubleU, is also a victim of bullying, rap was a way for him to empower his mind and make it through each day. His song, Stay Strong, featured in the video addresses bullying.

"It is extremely important for you to embrace your true self. Never allowing anyone to discredit your worth. Once you acknowledge your value, then it doesn’t matter what anyone else says or does.

"You must learn the art of standing up for yourself. This act of courage, will require you to love yourself, appreciate the skin you are in and embrace your strengths and weaknesses.

"I’m sure you have heard the saying: no one can take away your power unless you surrender it. Once you are empowered, it becomes easier to tackle the bullying you may experience and move forward unscathed.

You

You worry and fret
Yet in your haste forget
That you are truly blessed

A unique soul in a lost world
Where the norm is to become
A clone of another person

Failing to accept the truth of
your amazing human assets

You must love the unique you
Embrace your strengths,
Your weaknesses

Appreciate the skin you are in
You are here for a reason

There has never been
And will never be
Another you…"

The new video, ‘Empowering The Victims Of Bullying’ is available at Youtube at https://youtu.be/d33f6R13YwI.

Williams, the award winning author of 'A Collection Of Poems: A Journey Through Life' is also a talented film maker and musician. She recently released a new video entitled "Covid-19: A Child's View." The new film is a penetrating look into the experiences of those whose young lives have been affected. The new film is available at Youtube at https://youtu.be/MiL3NMtsKhM.

"In this YouTube video, 'Covid-19: A Child’s View', we can listen to the kids as they speak about their experiences and perspectives surrounding the virus and this pandemic," Williams stated.

Williams had a chance to speak with Anthony, the fourteen year old Covid survivor, who was featured in 'Covid-19 and My Child. Anthony’s story was aired on News 12 Long Island and featured in the the Deer Park-North Babylon NY Patch,
https://patch.com/new-york/deerpark-northbabylon/mom-whose-son-14-had-coronavirus-urges-back-school-caution

Williams also recently posted a mesmerizing account of her coronavirus experience in a Youtube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpN7nMt8gf0&t=91s.

Williams was named Top Female Author in the 2019 Top Female Author Awards in the poetry category. The win came as the result of her most recent book, 'A Collection Of Poems: A Journey Through Life'. Williams was chosen from a field of hundreds of authors by a panel of judges.

Writing has helped Williams connect with her inner self, finding positive ways to cope with life's struggles. She has been writing and singing for as long as she can remember.

Throughout her childhood she sang in both the church and school choir, and also enjoyed singing at talent shows and music festivals. As an adult she also participated in concerts, performing as a solo artist.

Music and writing are the tools that bring her fulfillment and healing. Her book, 'A Collection Of Poems', takes us through the power of the human mind, good or bad, and its impact on one's direction and journey through life.

With the help of music, writing, and positive thinking, Williams found hope and purpose in life. Life isn't fair. It is unpredictable, bad things happen to good people, and we never know what tomorrow holds. Cheryl wants her readers to realize that even when faced with insurmountable, hopeless situations, even when life seems dark and uncertain, we should never let go of hope and appreciate the beauty and blessings that life has to offer, making the most of every day, loving, living, laughing, and learning. Seasons change, and there is always a rainbow after the storms of life.

Cheryl Williams is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at cherylw27@aol.com. 'A Collection Of Poems: A Journey Through Life' is available at Amazon and Dorrance Publishing. More information, including a number of videos and a collection of music, is available at her website at https://cherylhot6.wixsite.com/cherylpwilliams.

About Cheryl Williams:

Cheryl Williams is a wife, mother, author, and nurse by profession, with a passion for the Arts.

Her love for poetry started at the tender age of five when she recited the poem "Grandfather Frog” for a school function. Six years later, her world was turned upside down after her mother suffered a massive stroke. During those uncertain times, music, writing, and poetry helped her cope.

As a teenager, whenever she wasn’t caring for her mother, Cheryl spent her free time writing and directing short plays as a form of entertainment for the children in her neighborhood.

She enjoyed singing in the church and school choir, while also performing publicly as a soloist in concerts and talent shows. As a result of her mother’s illness and her responsibility to help care for her, Cheryl was inspired to pursue nursing as a way to help others heal; the same way writing and music helped her find a path to healing. She resides in New York.

How To Overcome Substance Abuse - New Book From Bestselling Author Linville Meadows MD Reveals How Physicians Overcome Addiction To Alcohol And Drugs

While sobriety and the sober life are the goals of many 12 step programs, key differences in the manner in which physicians personally treat substance abuse and achieve long term sobriety can produce far better results.

Dr. Linville Meadows is an Honors graduate of the U.N.C. School of Medicine, was recognized internationally for his work in cancer research, and was designated as a Clinical Investigator of the National Cancer Institute. He has also successfully recovered from alcohol and cocaine addiction. His experience during his recovery laid the groundwork for his bestselling book on recovery, ‘A Spiritual Pathway to Recovery from Addiction: A Physician's Journey of Discovery’.

His approach to the subject is utterly unique, as it is a the memoir of a group of physicians going through an intensive rehab program for addiction to drugs and alcohol. It is presented as a collection of the stories and lessons they encountered during their time together. It is a step-by-step guide to understanding the disease of addiction and how to treat it effectively, presented in a way that is both highly informative and wildly entertaining.

While 28-day programs for alcohol and drug addiction can result in a recovery rate of approximately 10%, (about 20% for Alcoholics Anonymous), around 70% of doctors participating in an intensive rehabilitation program will be clean and sober—and practicing medicine—five years later. Readers will benefit from having information that may greatly increase their chances of successful recovery from addiction.

“The story of recovery from addiction is best told by those who lived it,” Meadows stated. “I have collected bits of wisdom from the individual lives of many addicts, and wrapped them in a memoir of physicians going through rehab. Each person shares an incident from their days of using, or a lesson they have learned along the way. Taken together they make an easy to read narrative about the disease and its treatment that anyone can use."

Some of the topics covered in the book include:

The disease concept of addiction
Overcoming the denial and the uncontrollable craving
Finding the openness, honesty, and willingness to change
Dealing with past mistakes and removing character defects
Exchanging my old addictive ways of thinking for healthier ones
Finding spiritual principles I can live by
Living without fear or worry
Finding happiness within myself

While the book is appropriate for any person who might wish to explore the topics of addiction and recovery, those for whom it will hold the most value include:

The reader who wants to know if his drinking is actually out of control.
The reader who knows he is in trouble, and wants to change.
The old-timer in recovery who wants to learn more about his disease.
Their families and friends.
The practitioner who treats these people.

The new book has received rave reviews from readers and reviewers alike. Ralph Snyderman, M.D., Chancellor Emeritus, Duke University stated, "If there is any book you plan to read about addiction this year, it should be this one as it will be a classic for anyone wanting to understand the mind of addicted physicians (and others) and what it takes to recover”. The Prairies Book Review said, “This outstanding guide with cogent insights into the nightmarish world of addiction and recovery is a must-read for anyone who thinks he has a problem with addiction.”

Dr. Meadows is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at meadowslin@gmail.com. ‘A Spiritual Pathway to Recovery from Addiction: A Physician's Journey of Discovery’ is available at online book outlets. George Floyd Murder, Pandemic, Unemployment, Old Age, Poverty - How To Thrive In The Midst Of Overwhelming Adversity Is The Subject Of New Book By Award Winning Author Donna Louis

Louis is the multi-award-winning author of two Christian books, and the upcoming new book 'Thriving In Every Season Of Life With God'. Louis’ books reveal God’s desire for our happiness and joy.

It is no small wonder that anxiety and depression levels are on the rise in the US. Civil unrest and division pervade our society on levels akin to the 1960's. George Floyd and Breonna Taylor represent but the tip of the iceberg. Unemployment has adversely affected a huge percentage of the population. In the midst of all of this we are forced to deal daily with the Covid-19 pandemic that has to date caused over 200,000 deaths in the US alone. While sickness is a possibility for many of us, old age is a virtual certainty.

All of this is enough to overwhelm anyone. So why is it that some people seem to be unaffected by all of this uncertainty and unrest? How is it that some people manage to maintain a positive attitude in the very midst of all of it, while the rest of us experience stress, tension, anxiety, disappointment, and frustration? Is it possible to not only survive, but to thrive in the very midst of such turmoil?

How we might do that is the subject of award-winning author Donna Louis' upcoming new book, 'Thriving In Every Season Of Life With God'. Louis believes that we experience "seasons" in life, in much the same way as nature experiences seasons, with periods of both growth and decline. When we understand that, we come to see that a period of decline is not something permanent, but instead merely foreshadows a period of growth. The book, somewhat similar to the 'Chicken Soup For The Soul' collection, is highly motivational and packed with powerful and engaging stories that give the reader examples of illuminating situations drawn from the lives of both Biblical-era and modern day people. She recently had this to say:

“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. As you can see when God created this world, he did it with seasons in mind. This was his intention, and this is the same way our lives are. We all go through seasons in our lives some euphoric and others despondent however we must remember that God is always with us. God told us fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. With this promise we can have confidence in knowing that whatever we are going through God will cause us to always triumph.

“The same way that God created trees in the Garden of Eden with all kinds of fruit that was good for us is the same way that God has created all manner of people black and white, the young who become old, rich and poor alike. We all can thrive in life no matter what obstacles may come our way. We must believe, have a vision, have faith, be hopeful always, have an attitude of gratitude, watch the words we speak, and trust God. Remember the Bible says I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. ‘The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.’ – Molière.”

Louis' latest published book, 'Book of Proverbs, Wisdom vs. Wilderness' delves deeply into the timeless human quest for wisdom. As all Christians know, the primary purpose of the Biblical Book of Proverbs is to teach wisdom. The Book of Proverbs provides intellectual depth, insights and exceptional wisdom on how to live a meaningful, joyful and tranquil life by honoring and respecting God as omnipotent.

The new release discusses all chapters in Proverbs 1-31 and brings insight, clarity, and basic meaning to several verses in each chapter. It clarifies why wisdom is not only essential, but mandatory in life, if one hopes to live a blessed life, versus living destitute, empty, or feeling lost or hopeless.

Louis has won a number of industry awards. She was recently chosen as the winner in the 2018 Top Female Author Awards in the Religion/Philosophy/Spiritual category. Louis was chosen from an international field of contestants by a panel of judges. She was also a recent winner in the 2018 50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading Awards.

Louis' recent wins follow three awards in the 50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading Awards contest (2015, 2016 and 2017), and two nominations in the Top Female Authors Awards.

Donna Louis' first book, 'Miracles of Direction, Miracles of Conquest, Miracles of Provision and Miracles of Purpose' helps readers explore miracles both past and present. The book explores biblical miracles that took place while Jesus was here on earth. She then references with miracles that take place on a daily basis in the modern world. She separates these miracles into four categories and presents insightful examples of each type, taken directly from the Bible.

Louis knows her subject well, as she has personally experienced four miracles. As the result of those life-altering experiences, she began an in-depth study of some of Christianity's most well-documented miracles. In her book, she attempts to expand upon and explain both the purpose and the direction of those miracles.

'Miracles' has received rave reviews from readers. One review called it "amazing, uplifting and inspirational". Another stated, "I was profoundly impressed by the writing."

Donna Louis is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below, or by email at donnalouisgodsmessenger@aol.com. More information is available at her website. Both books are available at Payhip at http://bit.ly/1jFX4qs, at Barnes and Noble at http://bit.ly/2LECI1h, at Xulon press at http://bit.ly/2P4ezU5 and at Amazon at https://amzn.to/38wW82l. Read With Me - Award Winning Author Of Romance, History And Adventure Mystery Donna Fletcher Crow Offers Top Picks For Fall Reading

Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history, adventure and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. Reviewers have compared her work to PD James, Dan Brown and Barbara Pym. Her fall picks include Jane Austen and Laurie Lee

Fall is the time of year when many of us begin to wind down from all those vacation and summer fun activities. Not so this year. The pandemic has put a crimp in our lifestyles that will most likely continue throughout the season. While there are still many things we cannot do, there is one thing we can do - read. Reading can serve as a momentary escape, as an exhilarating adventure, a comfort or perhaps just a temporary reprieve from the stress of dealing with the disruption in our lives. Award winning author Donna Fletcher Crow recently offered some suggestions for Autumn reading:

"Autumn is my favorite time of the year—I love the crisp days, the colorful foliage; I love taking walks in crunchy leaves, savoring that special tang to the autumn air; I love celebrating Harvest Festival at church, and handing out candy to our neighborhood spooks for Halloween.

"But not this year. Apart from harvest and Halloween parties being locked down due to the Coronavirus, in our area devastating wildfires have turned our sky brown, making eyes water and noses run. Taking long walks—crunchy leaves or not—has become a health hazard. And, it seems we have the best of it. In surrounding states large areas, including people’s homes, are consumed in flames, while other parts of the nation are ripped by hurricanes.

"If, like myself, you are missing your normal fall pleasures and escapes, I invite you to read with me as I return to some old favorites that evoke autumns of happier times.

Top of my list is always Jane Austen—in this case, 'Persuasion', Austen’s last and “most autumnal” novel. Here, Anne Eliot undertakes an autumn stroll: '[P]leasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves, and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn, that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness, that season which had drawn from every poet, worthy of being read, some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.'

"Another long-time favorite is Laurie Lee’s 'Cider With Rosie'. Although it begins in June, we are given a wonderful account of that autumn when the young Lee arrives 'at school just three feet tall and fatly wrapped in scarves' by his sisters. A wonderful evocation of by-gone days.

"My delight in autumn is exemplified in my own novels as well. The nostalgic 'The Flame Ignites' is set in October of 1984 when the New England hillsides are ablaze with redgold autumn and reflects my love of having lived in New England. My heroine and her cousin go for a rambling drive to buy pumpkins at a roadside stand, then 'home with golden afternoon sun filtering through the autumn foliage and scarlet and orange leaves drifting down on them.'

"In the opening of my Victorian true crime novel 'A Most Inconvenient Death', Lord Danvers takes to the sky in his aerostat and arrives at the coming of age party for his old friend’s son, skimming 'barely above the autumn-bright trees.'

“The Arthurian epic ‘Glastonbury’ depicts Celtic life in Roman Britain during fall-of-the-leaf time: 'The evening shadows lengthened, and the golden glow of an autumn sunset spread over the island... An evening thrush sang, and the harpsong answered it. The flames danced, and the melody swayed with them. Autumn leaves rustled in the trees, and harp notes chased them.'

"In my late Regency novel 'Where Love Restores' the characters experience autumn in Cambridge: 'The fallen leaves were damp from autumn rains, and a thin mist clung to the ground. Tree branches over their heads took on a delicate beauty as the gray sky gave way to the spreading pink glow of dawn. It would be a fine day... For some moments they stood listening to the tiny rustles and scurries among the leaves and branches—small animals hurrying to gather their autumn food stores before winter.' Later they are drawn into helping villagers with the harvest and join in the traditional feasting.

“Perhaps it’s not quite the same as taking my own walk in an autumn-hued woods, but the best way I know to experience the season virtually. Do join me.”

Donna Fletcher Crow is the author of 50 books, mostly novels of British history. She has taken a number of high-level industry awards for her work. 'Glastonbury' is her best-known book, which received the prestigious First Place, Historical Novel, award from the National Federation of Press Women. Readers and reviewers have raved about 'Glastonbury', calling it "The best of its kind," "richly fascinating," "beautifully researched," "gloriously evocative," and "panoramic." One Amazon reader said, "WHAT a work! Every reader can be enveloped in the sheer scope and quality, every historian be constantly nodding at the precise detail and accuracy, and every Christian can rejoice in the fullness of scripture. For me it is simply beyond descriptive praise. I would urge all who value truth to treat themselves to a feast."

The Elizabeth & Richard Mysteries is a literary suspense series using literary figures as background: Rudyard Kipling in 'The Flame Ignites', Dorothy L Sayers in 'The Shadow of Reality', Shakespeare in 'A Midsummer Eve's Nightmare', and Jane Austen in both 'A Jane Austen Encounter' and 'A Most Singular Venture'. Watch for 'A Prodigious Sum of Corpses: Seeking Sanditon at Jane Austen’s Seashore', which will take readers to all of Austen’s favorite seashore resorts. Accounts of Crow’s visits to these sites are available on her blog under the heading “Jane Austen Seashore Tour.”

The Lord Danvers Victorian true-crime series is an Amazon bestseller in the British Detectives category. Books in the series include 'A Lethal Spectre', 'A Most Inconvenient Death', 'Grave Matters', 'To Dust You Shall Return' and 'A Tincture of Murder'. Donna provides a no-charge download of 'A Tincture of Murder' for those who sign up for her newsletter. More information is available at her website.

Where There is Love is a 6-book series of the enduring legacy of love and faith all based on historic people and events. The titles are: ‘Where Love Begins’, ‘Where Love Illumines’, ‘Where Love Triumphs’, ‘Where Love Restores’, ‘Where Love Shines’, and ‘Where Love Calls’.

The Daughters of Courage, 'Kathryn', 'Elizabeth' and 'Stephanie' is a pioneer family saga based on the stories of Crow's own family and other Idaho pioneers in the Kuna, Nampa and Boise area. A short story on her blog entitled “A Nostalgic Fourth of July” is based on a scene from ‘Kathryn: Days of Loss and Hope'.

The Monastery Murders Series features atmospheric contemporary crimes with their roots buried deep in the middle ages. Books in the series include 'A Very Private Grave', 'A Darkly Hidden Truth', 'An Unholy Communion', 'A Newly Crimsoned Reliquary', 'An All-Consuming Fire' and 'Against All Fierce Hostility.'
