Quarterly grants will be awarded to schools, institutions, churches and community groups
Debra Slover, Founder of Leadership Garden® Legacy and patron of the Leadership Garden Fund, announced today its first Cultivation Grant award in the amount of $500 to For Girls Glocal Leadership (4GGL).
4GGL partners with existing local organizations to develop girls’ leadership programs in disadvantaged communities worldwide. 4GGL works currently with organizations in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Liberia, Peru and New York City. A Cultivation Grant in the amount of $500 was awarded in support of their 1000 LEADERS “Compassion Project” fund raising challenge.
“The mission of 4GGL," stated Slover, "aligns perfectly with our vision of a thriving worldwide Leadership Garden Legacy. Our goal is to seed and nurture 11 million Leadership Gardens by 11/11/11.”
The Leadership Garden Fund is part of the Leadership Garden Legacy unveiled earlier this month by Ms. Slover. It offers grants to individuals and organizational members of the Leadership Garden Registry who are interested in creating projects that support six leader-friendly gardening practices. These projects are made up of Inclusion Projects, Safe and Healthy Community Projects, Compassion Projects, Kindness Projects, Accountability Projects and Healing Projects.
Grants between $250-500 will be awarded quarterly, and can be obtained by non-profit organizations or individuals affiliated with a non-profit organization such as a church, school, institution, or community group.
'The 4GGL Cultivation Grant," said Ms. Slover, "supports the grassroots movement, a "glocal" action, across the United States to awaken the consciousness of Americans about girls' leadership development and its benefit to families and communities around the world."
4GGL's 1000 LEADERS fund raising challenge encourages everyday people to make the world's poorest girls a priority by making a contribution of $10 or more. The challenge will run until Mother's Day of 2009. Money raised will go towards the efforts of 4GGL in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India where they will help to develop the leadership skills of 150 female students ages 16-24 to return to their communities, train more leaders, and provide support for grassroots organizations serving impoverished girls.
The Leadership Garden Legacy program is designed to be a catalyst in helping to create a network of people that uses a "natural leadership development" framework to make the world a better place to live, work, and play. This mission is accomplished through the leader-friendly gardening "Practice Project" grants.

Local Author Mark Gordon Smith Releases First Fiction Novel, Harrisville
New book set in Harrisville, Alpena and Oscoda Michigan areas
Mark Gordon Smith, author of the Private Italy trilogy, announced today the release of his first fiction novel, Harrisville. In this new novel, he continues the tradition of passionate and lyrical writing first revealed in the Italian trilogy, this time creating a work of fiction that is suspenseful, haunting and is filled with unexpected twists.
“The town of Harrisville has always been a part of me,” said Mr. Smith. “I lived in that town when I was a child, and the most critical event in the novel is based upon an event that occurred while our family was living there. Small town and rural life has always captivated me,” Smith explained, “particularly as it was portrayed in novels written in nineteenth century England. Harrisville pays homage to George Eliot’s Middlemarch. The main character of my novel is based upon Dorothea Brooke who is the key character in Eliot’s novel. I found that Dorothea’s strength, her drive and her life were deeply absorbing. Mary, who is the lead character in my novel, is a reflection of Eliot’s character.”
Mark Gordon Smith spent his childhood and early adult years moving around the globe: Italy, Washington, DC, Salt Lake City, Hawaii and Colorado. It was during summer vacations that his family would return to Harrisville and Mio, Michigan to visit his grandparents. Those experiences provided the core inspiration for writing his first fiction novel, Harrisville.
Mr. Smith attended the United States Military Academy. Throughout those years, he continued to pursue a lifelong passion for writing. After graduating from West Point, he completed a five-year obligation and then worked in several multi-national companies, primarily in sales and human resources. He left corporate work in early 2001.
In the summer of that same year, he moved to Florence Italy and wrote the first volume of his Italian Trilogy, Tuscany Echoes, A Season In Italy. It was after his return from Italy that he began to work on Harrisville. In the midst of his work on the fiction novel, he wrote and released the second volume of his trilogy, Tuscan Light, Memories of Italy.
"Most of my work in the past has been non-fiction,” stated Mr. Smith, “yet I have been working on Harrisville for many years. I was motivated, right from the first word of the novel, to share my fascination with small town life through a story filled with challenges, hope and redemption. The narrative takes place in the town of Harrisville, Michigan, located along the northeastern shore of Lake Huron.”
“Ultimately,” Smith concluded, “the novel was written to share with readers the parallels in all of our lives, whether we live in small town America or a small town in England. I hope, of course, that people will read and enjoy the novel; I also hope that readers will be further motivated to explore nineteenth century English classics as well.”
Mr. Smith will be available for interview in the Harrisville, Michigan area from April 16 to April 18, 2009. He will hold a book signing April 23rd at L. Bookworm in Holden Beach, NC, from 2pm to 4 pm, another at Pelican Books at Ocean Isle Beach, NC, from 2pm to 4 pm on April 24th. A third signing is set at Pomegranate Books in Wilmington NC on April 29 at 7 pm.
Harrisville is available at the author’s website and from Amazon.com. Mr. Smith is available for interview and can be contacted using the information below.

Alan Ellman, Author Of Cashing In On Covered Calls, Featured On Mind Your Bizness Radio
Highly successful self educated investor demonstrates how anyone can take control of their own financial future. The show will run through September 2009
Alan Ellman believes that anyone can become a successful self taught investor. He believes this because he has done it. And now, he offers all of us the opportunity to take advantage of what he has learned through experience.
“My system,” stated Dr. Ellman, “is dedicated to the average blue collar investor who yearns to become CEO of their own money. Using a series of common sense steps, anyone can learn to invest with confidence and control. This knowledge and control results in an incredible feeling of power as people begin to realize they need only depend on themselves for creating financial success.”
Dr. Ellman’s book, Cashing In On Covered Calls, is considered by many to be the ultimate guide to becoming a successful ‘blue collar’ investor. “I used the power of self-education,” stated Dr. Ellman, “to accomplish my mission of becoming an accomplished stock market investor. I used the same blueprint that I adapted to become a licensed General Dentist, a Certified Personal Trainer and a Licensed Real Estate Agent. Year after year my portfolio generated higher returns than those of the average stock market."
"When I started selling options, those returns increased exponentially. In 2006 I was invited to speak before a group of 250 Real Estate investors about some successful property investments I had fashioned. When I mentioned that I purchased my first investment property with the profits earned from selling stock options, the floodgates opened. I received a seemingly endless numbers of calls and emails asking me to explain how I do this."
"In response I held a series of seminars, each one a sellout. That has led to my penning of a book, Cashing in on Covered Calls, with another on the way. In addition to that, a DVD and CD Series have been created."
Dr. Ellman presented 11 seminars during the past year on the subject of stock options. He was a speaker at the LIREIA Deal Panel Forum in 2006, and was a featured speaker (along with Than Merrill of A&E's Flip This House) at the LIREIA December meeting. He is the author of a monthly series of articles on investing at the Blue Collar Investor website (www.thebluecollarinvestor.com). Dr. Ellman has 20 years of successful stock market investing, boasting a 33% return in 2007. He was recently named Investor of the Month by David Lindahl, a world renowned Real Estate investor. He is a speaker for the Learning Annex and is a seminar presenter for Norwegian Cruise Lines.
His book, Cashing In On Covered Calls, along with a series of DVD and audio recordings, are available at www.thebluecollarinvestor.com and at Amazon.com.
