Vera Jane Cook discusses her must-read women’s fiction novels, Dancing Backward In Paradise and Hearts Upon A Fragile Bough
Author Vera Jane Cook will appear on The Authors Show Radio through February, 2011. In this interview, she discusses her award winning, must read women’s fiction novels Dancing Backward In Paradise and Hearts Upon A Fragile Bough.
“I write,” stated Ms. Cook, “because my spirit beckons me to do so. Mostly I enjoy writing for the 'other' world I create with characters, all of whom are all bits and pieces of people I've known, including myself.”
An only child, Jane began reading novels at an early age and was deeply influenced by an eclectic group of authors including Nelson DeMille, Anne Rice and Jodi Picoult. Jane worked in the professional theatre for over a decade, falling further in love with the plays of Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neil, Lillian Hellmann, and Sam Shepherd. She has appeared in television, regional theatre, film and off Broadway. Some of her credits have included both classic and original plays at Playwrights Horizons, WPA Theatre, Kennedy Center, Theatre for The New City, Bucks County Playhouse and many others.
She worked as an education territory manager for The New York Times and presented many workshops on using the newspaper in education as a tool for teaching English as a Second Language. She has worked as a Project Manager for the Education department of the New York Daily News, as well as an Education Specialist for Oxford University Press (ESL division) and as an Education Consultant for Scholastic.
Jane has completed five novels and has developed her newest workshop/seminar: The Corporate Crunch: Get Creative or Crack. This seminar/workshop is presently available for workshops, seminars, and adult education courses and is also the basis for her first non-fiction book.
Dancing Backward In Paradise, Jane’s first published novel, received rave reviews from Midwest book review and Armchair Interviews. It also won the Eric Hoffer Award for publishing excellence and the Indie Excellence Award for notable new fiction, 2007. Hearts Upon a Fragile Bough is Jane's second published novel.
“I take risks in my writing,” stated Ms. Cook. “Readers who enjoy eccentricity, humor, history and flawed characters would like my books. They are very human stories and I write as poetically as I can because I enjoy the rhythm and descriptive beauty of the English language.”
Jane has published short stories, articles and newsletters and has also written early childhood curriculum. Her published curriculum has been for Weekly Reader and McGraw Hill.
