Donna Fletcher Crow's Fascination With Scottish History Is A Decades Long Journey That Inspires Award-Winning Novels And Captivates The Hearts And Minds Of Americans

Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history, adventure and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. Reviewers have compared her work with PD James, Dan Brown and Barbara Pym.

Scottish history holds great significance for many of us here in the United States, as it weaves a rich tapestry that has shaped the cultural and historical fabric of both Scotland and the US. From the mystical isle of Iona, a focal point of Gaelic monasticism for three centuries, to the resilient town of Selkirk, which helped give birth to the legend of William Wallace, Scotland's history resonates across the Atlantic. The majestic Edinburgh Castle, standing proudly atop the ancient volcanic rock, symbolizes centuries of Scottish sovereignty and resistance against oppression. The pivotal Battle of Bannockburn, fought in 1314, serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit and quest for freedom that continue to inspire people in both countries. The allure of Scottish heritage, with its traditions, music, and clan connections, captivates the hearts of many Americans.

It is this heritage that has helped inspire many of the novels written by bestselling, multi-award winning author Donna Fletcher Crow. She addressed this subject in a blog post titled 'Scotland On My Mind, the Influence of Heritage,' on the occasion of her 60th wedding anniversary. She and her husband will be celebrating the event with a family reunion in Scotland.

"Thanks to family history research handed down to me from my great uncle Donald Fletcher," Crow stated, "our family has always enjoyed claiming descent from Fletcher the Warrior, sole survivor among the men of Selkirk of the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. This bit of historical identity has been a focus of family fun that included Highland dancing, bagpipe playing, and kilt wearing for various members--as well as a source for story and setting for many of my novels.

"It was, therefore, natural that my husband, whose Johnston ancestors came to the New World from Scotland before the Revolutionary War, should choose a Scottish Castle as the venue for the family (all 26 of us) to gather in to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary. Just as it was natural for me to use our Scottish heritage in my family saga trilogy The Daughters of Courage based on a fictionalized account of my own pioneer roots. I later went on to recount stories of Celtic saints in my Monastery Murders series, especially in Book 1, A Very Private Grave where saints Mungo and Ninian play a part in the story. Likewise, in Book 5 Against All Fierce Hostility where Scotland's patron Saint Andrew makes an appearance.

"In my most recent project The Celtic Cross Series, Scotland's history covers 4 volumes through Saint Columba, Kenneth Mac Alpin, Queen Margaret, William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce--all magnificent heroes and heroines whose lives serve as such excellent role models for their country, for the world, and for our family."

Crow picked up several new awards for a number of books in the Celtic Cross Series. She received the Book Excellence Award, billed as "A Global Celebration of Literary Excellence", for 'The Dawning of Peace, Of Dreamers and Designers,' Book 10 The Celtic Cross Series.

She also received the First Place, Media Network Idaho, Adult Novel, and National Federation of Press Women, Adult Novel, Second Place for 'The Shaping of the Union, Of Plots and Parliaments,' Book 8, The Celtic Cross Series

Bestselling Author Donna Fletcher Crow And Podcaster Adam Graham Unveil The Gems of Classic British Mysteries In New Interview

Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history, adventure and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. Reviewers have compared her work with PD James, Dan Brown and Barbara Pym.

Bestselling author Donna Fletcher Crow recently interviewed podcaster Adam Graham and has posted the interview on her website. Graham's popular podcast offers a "mystery-solving line-up of radio detectives" that includes Some 6,000 separate episodes spanning the gamut of American and British mystery literature.

After a deep delve into old time favorites Superman and Dragnet Graham turned to including the treasures of Classic British Mysteries. His stellar offerings include vintage Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, Hercule Poirot, and the Scarlet Pimpernel. Adam Graham’s Old Time Detectives of British Mysteries have starred such greats of stage and screen as Basil Rathbone, Orson Wells, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Ralph Richardson, Vincent Price, and Angela Lansbury.

In her article, Crow wrote, "The inimitable Adam Graham has been one of my most-admired friends for many years—and not just because he always wears a kilt! I had even listened to some of Adam’s podcasts of 'The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio,' but I had no idea he has done so much. Adam Graham’s podcasts offer a treasure trove of listening.

"I asked Adam to tell us how he got into the fascinating, cutting-edge world of podcasting and to send along some links that would appeal to my readers—especially those who are fans of classic British mysteries. In addition to a wealth of mystery listening, Adam also included links to programs of classic literature he has done such as ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ ‘Mansfield Park,’ and ‘Of Human Bondage.’

“An especially gripping series on offer is ‘Adam Graham Presents the War.’ A series of old-time radio shows, now available via podcasts which offer a narrative of America in World War II from the pre-War isolationism to a few episodes that looked at the aftermath.

“My particular favorite is an American in England in which the American host conducts a series of interviews showing the effect of the War on Cromer, a small seaside town on the east coast of England. I found these stories of the day-to-day lives of common people standing against brutal attacks to be heart-rending.”

Crow, who writes 3 mystery series in the style of classic British detective fiction has posted the interview on her blog, “The Authorized Version,” at https://donnafletchercrow.com/p/496/Classic-British-Mysteries-with-Adam-Graham-Podcaster-Extraordinaire-

Kishanda Fulford Talks About Her New Book, The Spite Of Fortune, With Bestselling Author Donna Fletcher Crow

Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history, adventure and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. Reviewers have compared her work with PD James, Dan Brown and Barbara Pym.

Kishanda Fulford's new book, ‘The Spite Of Fortune’, has been released to rave reviews. In ‘The Spite Of Fortune’ readers will discover the captivating world of Louisa Carolina Colleton, whose life far out-strips the adventures of the heroine of any Gothic novel. Bestselling author Donna Fletcher Crow sat down with Fulford to delve deeper into the research and inspiration behind this compelling biography, and shared her fascinating insights in an exclusive interview. You won't want to miss out on the secrets uncovered in this interview, which you can find on Crow's blog at https://donnafletchercrow.com/articles.php. Be sure to read Crow's review of 'The Spite Of Fortune' in the same article.

Crow said about her interview: “Kishanda Fulford first mentioned her project of writing about her husband’s ancestress in an interview she gave me in 2021 (which is also on my website). She said that it would be coming out “next year” and I responded that I looked forward to reading the book and interviewing her again when that happened.

“As a passionate Jane Austen scholar, I am interested in all aspects of life in the 18th century. I was certain that the life of this previously unknown real-life heroine would add important insights into the life of a woman of that time. Not only is Kishanda’s subject her husband’s forebearer, but also Kishanda is a former journalist and a Janeite herself—no one could be better placed to undertake this project.

“The vicissitudes of the publishing world being what they are, it’s not surprising that the completed project took considerably longer, but it was well worth waiting for. And, once again, Kishanda was gracious and generous in her interview. Knowing what a busy lady she is as a mother of 4, wife of controversial media figure Francis Fulford, and chatelaine of Great Fulford, one of the principal country manors of England, I only requested her press kit when I finally heard of the book’s release.

“In her usual magnanimous way, Kishanda replied that she didn’t have a prepared press kit, but would be happy to answer my questions. I was delighted to learn of the depth, challenges, and vicissitudes of Kishanda’s meticulous research process which took her, like her subject, back and forth across the Atlantic ocean several times and involved a close-up encounter with an alligator, among other adventures.

“I am also honoured that Kishanda allowed me to publish a little-known portrait of her heroine that came to light only after her book was published. And I was delighted at Kishanda’s response to my query as to whether she felt she shared characteristics with her stalwart subject, as I strongly suspect she does.”
