Top Motivational Speaker Rocky Romanella Discusses How 'What If' Visionaries Combine Traditional Values With Vision To Become The Architects Of Their Destiny

Renowned as a keynote speaker, trainer, and Forbes Contributor, Romanella founded 3SIXTY Management Services, LLC. With 40+ years in leadership, he served as CEO and Director at UniTek Global Services after a 36-year UPS career.

Strategic planning is a core component of any business strategy. A multitude of factors, all equally important, enter into this equation and many of us are quite good at putting together solid business plans. Strategic thinking on the other hand is a different skill altogether, requiring the ability to envision future trends and possibilities. Top motivational speaker Rocky Romanella recently published an article titled, "Are You A 'What If' Visionary" in which he discussed the importance of this visionary approach and how this builds a bridge to the future. In that article he stated in part:

Over the past 9 months I have had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with some incredible people and companies. Businesses of all sizes, that have great people, wonderful technology and energy and enthusiasm for growth.

Many of these companies are in traditional businesses. All possess two things in common, they all have core values that are traditional and a vision that is exciting and new! I will call them the “WHAT IF VISIONARIES.”

They are the people who believe that someone is going to be the best at what they do, why not us? They are the architects of their own destinies and believe you should never allow anyone to affect you more than you can affect yourself.

I have had the opportunity to partner with them on strategies, create training workshops and deliver keynotes where we inspired each other.

It caused me to examine some of the paradigms, wise tales, and urban legends I grew up with. Here are two that I think the “what If visionaries” would not accept!

The first is one we have all heard and probably used. Does this sound familiar?

The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.

While this may work with Wall Street investors who like consistency in expectations, it can be harmful in many ways as a leader. Let us look at it from a few perspectives.

1. People: you may stick too long with a person who needs a change of job or scenery. It may be time for a new position but because they are the person you know, no change is made, you stick with the status quo, the safe bet. The real casualty is the value you place on variety of thought and the encouragement of a wide range of viewpoints among team members to avoid group thinking. It hinders your ability to create more impactful solutions and opportunities for advancement.

2. Business: sticking with the devil you know does not allow you to identify and successfully generate new products, markets, and geographic growth opportunities. It stifles you from continually searching for ways to add value and to position the organization for future success.

3. You will always stop at the first answer. The “What if Visionaries” look past the first right answer to create breakthrough, first to market answers!

Another one is:

It is not the plan that is important, it is the planning.

1. If you focus on the planning process (the activity of planning) only and not the desired outcome and how to accomplish the desired outcomes, along with the key metrics, this leads to an organization with a poor plan and poor results but with some great planning meetings.

2. It brings into question the business acumen of the leader. Do they understand and have experience in all functional areas of their business? Do they understand finance as the language of business and use it to effectively monitor and improve business performance and do they know how to utilize a Balanced Business Scorecard to augment financial planning?

3. They should be credible with the investor community and all other stakeholders as they are building the plan. Finally, they need to become an expert in all aspects of business planning and lead the management team in highly effective planning protocols.

Working with the “what if visionaries” is motivating, empowering and creates great energy and enthusiasm inside an organization. The change in thinking for them is questions like:

• What if we viewed our people as our greatest asset?
• What if we aspired to have the best, the brightest, most informed, and best people in our industry?
• What if our processes created our quality results?
• What if we are a technology company that happens to make “X” product or “Y” services?
• Are we the sum of many little things done well?
• What does good look like?

The list can go on and on. But for me one thing is clear, the “What If Visionaries” are the next generation of business leaders who will be the Architects Of Their Own Destiny!

These are the people I want to work with, consult with, train with, strategize with and speak with, because they see things differently and challenge themselves not to stop at the first right answer.

"What if Visionaries" embrace and understand that leadership is about building a bridge to the future. Success will be measured by the degree to which you give your people the opportunity to help build that bridge by communicating and educating each one of them on the vision and strategy.

How Women's Roles Have Changed Since The 1960's: Women's Fashion Through The Decades By Positive Psychologist Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is a bestselling author and visionary psychologist and film maker. In the tradition of authors like Judy Blume, Dr. Holstein pushes the envelope in covering the challenges women of all ages really face.

Women's roles have undergone a profound change since the 1960's. Women have made dramatic strides in the workplace, our culture, in education and in the political arena. Many barriers have fallen, while many have stayed in place or morphed into something we don't recognize. By examining the shifts in employment, education, and social norms, we can better understand the progress made and the road still ahead.

Bestselling author and visionary Positive Psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein has spent her entire career helping women of all ages build resilience and self-esteem. In an article on her site, titled, "Women’s Fashion Through the Decades: Then vs. Now," she addressed some of those changes. In that article she wrote in part:

In the 1960s, women's clothing was often characterized by dresses, skirts, and high heels. The ideal female body image was the hourglass figure, and women's clothing often accentuated this shape. However, as women began to gain more freedom and independence, their attitudes about dressing started to change.

Today, the emphasis is on comfort and personal expression, and women are no longer confined to wearing traditionally feminine clothing. Many women choose to wear pants, sneakers, and other casual clothing, and there is a growing movement towards gender-neutral fashion.

And as we see today, most women do not try to conform to a single idealized body image. This has led to a wider range of fashion options for women, including plus-size clothing and clothing designed for women with different body shapes.

When I was a little girl, the major source of my clothing was via my cousin. If she grew that season then I would come to visit and see folded nicely on a chair the latest new clothes for me. Of course they were technically hand me downs but my aunt took such good care of my cousin's things that they were as close to new as possible. without a stain on them, even though worn by a little girl, starched when they had to be, and folded carefully.

I loved those hand me downs. One reason was that I thought my cousin, who was two years old than I, was beautiful, much prettier than I. She had straight almost black hair that shone in the right light and I had medium brown hair that wanted to be messy and curly but was only messy. I had had my tonsils out when I was two and my mom said the ether had taken away my beautiful soft curls and left me with basically a mess of hair, never quite right.

Let me mention at this point in my essay on clothing that already I'm talking about a different world than you and I live in now. For one thing, washing clothes was in and of itself difficult. When we lived in an apartment my mother had a washing machine. Oh no, it was nothing like you know now. It was a container into which water was taken from the sink in a hose hookup, as hot as possible and then one stirred that mess of laundry round and round until you were exhausted. Then you emptied the water and did more rounds of turning and turning the water that was now cold, as you had to rinse the clothes still full of soap. Finally in exhaustion you emptied the tub and now began the adventure of hanging out the wash.

Every apartment had access to a rope line. Some lines were hanging from one tree to another. Others were hanging from fire escapes, so you had to take your clothes pins and yourself and your wet laundry in a basket and stand on a metal fire escape where you wouldn' want to look down, as it was designed to run down stairs in a fire, made out of iron, and you could look down through all the openings.

That's the way it was when I was little, at our apartment. My aunt had a house and more money than us and so she had to stand in her back yard with a rope that went around tree trunks.

How To Build Self Esteem And Resilience - New Groundbreaking Podcast Series By Visionary Psychologist And Bestselling Author Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is a bestselling author and visionary filmmaker who uses positive psychology concepts to help kids deal with bullying, anxiety, depression, loneliness, school shootings, and social media issues. In the tradition of authors like Judy Blume, Dr. Holstein pushes the envelope in covering the challenges girls really face without sugarcoating it or downplaying the feelings or passions young girls experience.

Unlike their predecessors, today's youth confront vulnerabilities unimaginable merely decades ago. Seismic shifts demand a re-calibration of our perspectives. Sadly, due to these modern-day pressures, a very large percentage of girls today have seriously considered suicide. That qualifies as a seismic shift, and that alone demands we take action.

The realities faced by previous generations were vastly different. They did not include things like school shootings, climate change, and non-stop social media bullying. One thing has not changed, however. Advice given to kids, if it contains any semblance of "old-school," is met with swift rejection by those who would benefit most. So how do we reach this generation of girls and provide them with the resources they need to build self-esteem and resilience?

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is a visionary psychologist and filmmaker whose unprecedented selfie films have garnered over 200 placements and awards. Her singular vision is to help girls build resilience, self-esteem, and discover their own talents, abilities, and self-worth. She recently announced a groundbreaking podcast series featuring parents, educators, authors, and thought leaders endeavoring to cultivate these critical qualities in children. Every episode will present ideas regarding how self-esteem can be woven into the fabric of our children's daily experiences. Through insightful discussion, she hopes to find innovative ways to help our kids navigate life's trials with courage and confidence.

"As a positive psychologist and among many other roles in life such as a grandmother, I shiver when I think of what stresses we put on today's children," Dr. Holstein stated. "My mother was a stay-at-home mom until I was 6, when she started college. That meant she and I had long days of going to the park, going downtown to New Haven to Malley's, the big department store where I had delicious lunches and we met up with my grandmother. Other than getting lost one day when I wanted to weigh myself on the 5 and 10 cent scale, which resulted in my mom screaming and finally a tall lady holding me high until my mom saw me, life was containable and understandable.

"I had parents and grandparents and neighborhood kids to play in the dirt with and even a little boy who terrorized me by always telling me he was going to put me in the giant mailbox and I would never see my parents again. Well, it wasn't a perfect world, but I did learn math early from my dad, and made endless puzzles with my mom and loved lunch out and the giant elevator at the department store which was to me at 3 and 4 amazing. No it wasn't perfect and there wasn't much money. When I wanted a baby doll I saved pennies for months in a piggy bank. But there was safety. There was no TV, one radio, and a four way phone. Parents weren't worried about letting their kids cross the street to the park and kids being there unattended. Neighbors could be relied upon to care for each other's children.

"There was a sense of safety that existed and has now been destroyed. How will we repair the world so that normal safety and caring can be assured to our children? Does anyone know at this point? I'll do my best. I hope that if everyone pitches in, we can calm our country down so that good values and caring attitudes can be shared once again. I'm trying through podcasts and films and books to do my part. What will you do?"

The new podcast series is now available at https://www.enchantedself.com/resilience-self-esteem-podcast/.

Dr. Holstein has spent decades developing tools and techniques to help girls enhance self esteem and resilience. One of those tools, a workbook for girls titled, 'Looking Good, Feeling Good', just achieved bestseller status, an honor that many of her other books have achieved. The ebook hit the top of the Teen and Young Adult Self Esteem eBooks.

In this workbook, Each girl is offered an engaging opportunity to develop her creative talents and potential as she processes and better understands the angst of growing up and how it can be successfully handled. She can bring her own talents to her thoughts and responses to the issues presented which will further take her along a road of enhanced resilience and better self esteem. She can share her creative thoughts and answer questions, and even create poetry, start a play, draw a picture, or she can get out her phone and use it as a diary, or a means of sharing ideas about growing up with a friend, her mom or grandma. Or she can actually make selfie films with her phone which can be a great enhancer for self esteem and sharing one's creative talents.

She has also announced the release of a new selfie film series. The new series includes 7 films:

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 1. The Truth - A Short Film
A young girl shares her diary - falling in love, hating her mother, hating her parents fighting, being afraid to grow up, being upset that they may move, loving the locket her aunt gives her and feeling loved in ways by her aunt that her parents can't seem to muster, wishing the boy she is in love with would grow taller, confronting her disappointment that she has no relationship with him, sharing her glee at having a best friend and confiding in each other, coming to terms with growing up, letting go of her first love, getting ready to move and more.

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 2. Falling In Love - A Coming Of Age Selfie Film
A young teen talks to 'you' via Selfies on her smart phone. In these conversations the girl shares her loneliness moving, losing her best friend, her beginning friendships with new kids, and her realization that she has fallen in love again.

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 3. Secrets - A Coming Of Age Selfie Film
Based on Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Tween, this 10 minute film takes the audience on the complicated roller coaster ride of being 13. The 'girl' hates her parents, falls in love, has puberty and body concerns, realizes that secrets matter and finds herself in a miserable accidental situation. But all ends on an upbeat note with the girl realizing she is most in touch with happiness and a sense of joy when she is being true to herself.

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 4. Conflict And A Bit Of Magic - A Coming Of Age Selfie Film
The 'Girl' is traumatized by being ditched by a boyfriend, a bully, alcohol and kids taking drugs. Who can understand and help her? Maybe her aunt, who she gets to visit. A seance with a Medium in which the 'girl's' great-grandmother comes through gives her the courage she needs to ask her mom questions and in turn to learn some family secrets.

Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 5. The Medium - A Coming Of Age Selfie Film
The girl, unhappy, goes to visit a favorite aunt who takes her to see a medium. The girl's great grandmother is channeled in and changes happen for the better. Was this real of a set-up? Does that matter?

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 6. Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction - A Coming Of Age Selfie Film
Two traumatic events structure the 'Girl's' high school year: a lockdown and a family secret. She is shocked yet manages to recover and to understand the importance and value of family and the complexity of truth.

Self Esteem And Resilience Series - Video 7. Lockdown
Three teens find themselves in the girls' bathroom during a lock down in school. Each respond emotionally differently. All are affected.

All the films are available at https://vimeo.com/showcase/10863899, and on the Roku channel, The Enchanted Self Presents.

As a school psychologist and in her private practice, Dr. Holstein has worked with many children and parents, helping them to develop life skills in decision-making, recognition of their own talents, feel more courageous, and helping both kids and parents develop more successful inter-generational skills. Her last book, ‘Conflict and a Bit of Magic’, helps kids build self-esteem though reading the journal of a girl, identifying with the girl, and understanding they have more courage and resiliency than they thought they had. The book is based on the experiences of the already famous “girl” from 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween' and 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen', and achieved bestseller status in the multi-generational families category.

Saving Today's Generation Of Girls - Building Resilience And Self Esteem Is The Answer Says Bestselling Author Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

In the tradition of authors like Judy Blume, Dr. Holstein pushes the envelope in covering the challenges girls really face, without sugar coating it or downplaying the feelings or passions young girls experience. She does this through a number of bestselling workbooks and a group of award-winning films for girls.

As children, we all had to learn to face the challenges the world presented to us. Today however, those challenges loom much larger and are more pervasive. Social media offers both connection and isolation. Loneliness, even in a world that is seemingly completely connected via smart phones and computers, exacerbates the vulnerability of our youth. The specter of school shootings forces us to equip elementary age school children with self-defense skills, while cyberbullying breeds depression and tragically, even suicide. As pixels outweigh spoken words, parents and educators grapple with how to help their children in this digital age.

These challenges are unique to this generation. They spawn anxiety, depression, and a profound sense of isolation among children, perpetuating damaging comparisons and cyberbullying. Amidst this mental health crisis plaguing American youth, attempting to overcome the effects of school shootings, climate change, the pandemic, and peer pressure on an individual basis, using approaches that are many decades old, is frankly impossible. We need new answers for new problems.

Bestselling author Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has found the answer. She is on a profound mission: nurturing resilience and self-esteem in young girls—a goal embraced by mental health pros, parents, grandparents, and educators. Her approach is multi-faceted and employs many different forms of media, including bestselling self esteem workbooks and films for girls that have won hundreds of awards. Dr. Holstein’s latest workbook for kids, ‘Secrets’, achieved bestseller status in the ‘Teen & Young Adult Nonfiction on Depression’ category, as have a number of other books in the series.

She now has 7 of her award-winning selfie films available at no charge, available as the Self Esteem and Resilience Series on Vimeo and Roku at https://vimeo.com/showcase/10863899.

Dr. Holstein wraps Positive Psychology concepts in forms of media that young people find engaging, relatable and inspiring. These include:

Coming Of Age, Self Esteem And Resilience - Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Announces Bestseller Status For New Preteen Workbook, Looking Good, Feeling Good.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is a best-selling author and film maker who uses positive psychology concepts to help kids deal with bullying, anxiety, depression, loneliness, school shootings and social media issues.

Growing up, now known as coming of age, has always presented unique human challenges for young people. All kinds of life-changing social factors come to the forefront, and concerns like body image issues, particularly for girls, start to emerge. These challenges are both physical and psychological.

Mental health especially, while always a focal point, has now taken center stage in a world in which these kids face lockdowns, school shootings, anxiety, climate change and social media bullying. The effects of mental health problems during these years will have lasting implications, extending into adulthood. The roles parents, grandparents and educators can play have become diminished, due to the fact that older adults cannot understand, let alone offer effective approaches, to things they have not experienced and perhaps cannot understand. Most of us have never been told to hide under a desk and turn out the lights. Very few of us have been wakened by a ding in the middle of the night to find out we have been ostracized from our peer group. None of us believed the world could cease to exist before we reached adulthood.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, a visionary psychologist, film maker and author, has spent decades developing tools and techniques to help girls enhance self esteem and resilience.
