How You Can Heal Your Trauma Of Aging By Dr. Kixx Goldman, Bestselling Author Of Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing,' takes readers on a journey that is an illuminating exploration into intuition, resilience, and emotional honesty. The ebook version of the book will be available at no charge May 25, 2026 at Amazon.

Is aging a form of trauma?

When we think of trauma, we naturally think of it as a single, life changing event. Accidents. An attack or a life-threatening incident. We seldom think of it as being a slower, drip by drip buildup or a slow transition. As we get older, we may feel aging has "sneaked up" on us. Sometimes we experience new physical limitations and have to rely more on others--and may feel inadequate. At times, we may see ourselves differently. Our mortality is now staring us in the face.

Yes, aging could be considered a form of trauma.

Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of 'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing,' addressed this issue in an article, Inspirational Ideas, on her website. In that article, titled "Healing My Own Trauma Of Aging And How You Can Heal Your Trauma Of Aging," she wrote in part:

"If Ellen Burstyn can do it, so can I." That’s what I repeated to myself as I watched in awe as this charming Netflix trope of the “Queen Bees” unfolded on our screen.

The story is about Helen, an older, independent widow – played by Ms. Burstyn– who moves temporarily into a senior community while her home is being repaired, with surprising results–including romance with Dan –played by James Caan.

The message of the film is about the possibilities of life in senior years.

In the film, made a few years ago, Ellen Burstyn is an attractive, articulate, fit looking woman in her mid-eighties.

Although I, too, qualify as an aging member of society, I prefer to think of myself, like Ellen’s character, as an energetic and fit ‘superager.’

Hooked and encouraged by this uplifting tale, the film was a great balm for my own traumatic responses which had been in great need of healing, after watching Fareed Zakaria’s CNN show, on October 1st of ’23:

To my great dismay, only two days after she’d been laid to rest, Diane Feinstein’s photo flashed on the screen during Fareed’s Sunday GPS (global public square) show, without so much as a respectful word to honor an accomplished senator who’d contributed so much to our country.

I was appalled when Ms. Feinstein’s photo was followed by Fareed’s question posed to his guests,

“What is it about American politics that’s attracting a kind of Gerontocracy?”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of Fareed’s Sunday morning show. His messages raise my awareness of current events and I often agree with his politics and analyses of troubling world situations. Issues are usually carefully considered and explored with fairness and intelligence.

The October 1st show was no exception—at least, up until that segment!

In this unfortunate segment, Fareed’s ‘gerontocracy’ question became a jumping off point for a desultory discussion on the pitfalls of “old folks in politics” and bashing of several of our aging politicians in the US.

When Fareed declared Ms. Feinstein was “not the only person in the US Senate these days who makes you wonder whether they’ll die before they retire — is America’s leadership so old,” the full flush of fury began to take up residence in my body. I’d been close to hurtling a missive at my TV screen before, but this time, I came the closest.

Before that Sunday show, I’d been reading impressive tributes to Ms. Feinstein, the veteran senator. I’d been delighted to see the recognition for a woman who “worked so tirelessly on behalf of California and all of America.” (Bill Clinton). Throughout her illustrious career, she championed worthwhile causes and fought for what she believed in. Her work made a powerful, positive impact on the lives of so many.

Alas, none of the tributes to Dianne Feinstein were even acknowledged or alluded to in Fareed’s discussion.

My shock at this trashing of our older population led me to the Internet and my exploration of the American Psychological Association’s “take” on our society’s attitudes on aging.

In her cover story on the Home Monitor, Author Kirsten Weir reports that, “Psychologists are examining the age discrimination that pervades American culture and helping people to reimagine healthier relationships with their older selves…

Ageism is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices. Psychologists are working to change that.

From antiaging face creams to wisecracking birthday cards about getting older to “OK, boomer” memes, the message is clear: Being old is something to avoid.

Never mind that, if we have the good fortune to live a long life, inaccurate stereotypes about aging will harm all of us.''

In his article, "The Last Acceptable Prejudice," in the November '25 issue of the University of British Columbia Magazine, journalist Bruce Grierson cautions that Ageism is getting old. It's Time to Ditch the Stereotypes. Grierson notes that the WHO reports that Ageism is more pervasive than Racism or Sexism.

The author adds that something else makes ageism different. It's the only prejudice we hold against ourselves-- our future selves. As we get older we are undefended against the stereotypes we absorbed and perpetrated.

Kirsten Weir defines Ageism as “discrimination against older people because of negative and inaccurate stereotypes”—and noted that it’s so ingrained in our culture that we often don’t even notice.

Do We Need To Label Ourselves Asks Dr.

The ebook version of the book will be available at no charge March 17 and 18, 2026.

We're human. We all do it. We're good at it. We describe someone or something in a word or short phrase.

We label people: Conservative vs. Liberal. Male vs. Female. Black vs. White. We label things: Foreign vs. Domestic. At its best, labeling, like categorizing, allows us to store extensive amounts of information in our brains.

Labeling, however, can be especially harmful when we use it in psychotherapy treatment settings.

Labeling people can have significant ramifications. It can lead to stigmatization and stereotyping, putting clients into narrow boxes, which may overlook their unique experiences. It can lead to oversimplification of complex behaviors, ignoring the nuances of an individual's situation. It can also lead to inaccurate diagnoses and ineffective treatment. Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of 'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing,' addressed this issue in an article on her website. In that article, she said in part:

Once upon a time, I counseled at a mental health center in a small town out of Vancouver. Years later I was inspired to write a short story, Monitored, about my work at the center with an interesting client, "Frank."

I set the story at Riverview Hospital, the British Columbia provincial mental health center. Though I never worked there, I'd always been curious about it. Riverview was shut down in 2012, before I ever had a chance to visit, but I'd always been intrigued by the name's romantic image. It conjured up images of rolling meadows and a serpentine river, idyllic for patients. I was disappointed to read the Huffington Post, which declared, "…it's a spooky place, with "deserted buildings and shadowy grounds."

Frank came to therapy because of conflict in his relationship. I was puzzled when the focus of our sessions quickly shifted and he reported "being monitored" at work. He thought co-workers were spying on him, breaking into his locked office and going through his papers and belongings. My hunch was that Frank's belief was illusory. Mental health professionals following a standard psychiatric approach, might say he met the definition of "paranoid," a mental disorder, because of his "delusion" that he was being singled out for harm. They would have prescribed medication for Frank and possibly hospitalization.

I never did embrace labels like "paranoid." As noted, it helps us store information. It can be practical to categorize, order and label. But unlike designer labels-Calvin Klein, Levi, Betsey Johnson to name a few-those we attach to people pathologize them. Bi polar is an especially popular label these days. Such descriptions can imply criticism and tend to be written-in-stone. This makes it difficult for a person to change. Once we label someone, we tend to make an end run around creating a constructive plan of action for change and healing.

Having been trained in the "soft sciences," of family systems theory, I couldn't, or wouldn't, assign a label like "paranoid delusional" to Frank. I saw medication or hospitalization as a last resort. I saw Frank's fears of being spied on as having the beneficial function of protection, helping him to avoid thinking of the painful problems in his relationship. My inclination was to use a compassionate approach, which focused on my client's strength. If Frank could see his "symptom" of feeling monitored as being beneficial in protecting him from facing painful feelings or conflicts, he'd be able to more easily accept those feelings and begin to address his relationship problems.

What I've noticed working with people is that if real change is to occur, they need to accept, or even embrace, their present situation. Showing clients how their problem or "symptom" is beneficial to them is part of an approach that is most successful, especially with individuals like Frank, who demonstrate openness, a capacity for self-insight, and willingness to embrace new ideas.

Trauterose: One Woman's Epic Journey Of Survival And Courage In Post-War Germany

Elisabeth Haggblade's eyewitness account, winner of the 2024 Indie Reader Discovery Award, will likely be regarded as one of the best accounts ever written about post-World War II Germany.

While there have been many WWII memoirs published, one stands out due to its unique insight: 'Trauterose: Growing Up in Postwar Munich' by Elisabeth Haggblade. It is an extraordinary memoir and a seminal work on post-Hitler Germany, distinguished not only by the author's intimate encounters with historical figures, but also by its expansive global perspective.

'Trauterose' garnered critical acclaim, winning the 2024 IndieReader Discovery Award in the Memoir category and securing First Place Non-Fiction in The Authors Show 2024 Book Cover Awards. It is a compelling story that transcends the ordinary and offers a fresh, profound look into a pivotal era in our history.

'Trauterose' is the compelling first-person account of Elisabeth Haggblade, who was orphaned at birth at the height of World War II and spent the first eleven years of her life under the care of a former S.S. officer and his family.

Like many she knew and met during her formative years, Elisabeth was marked both physically and psychologically by the traumatic events of the war and its aftermath, where negotiating daily life during the most tenuous time in Germany's history often felt like a balancing act. Yet through it all, faith and the help of others prevailed.

One person aiding and delivering faith was the late Pope Benedict XVI,  known then as Herr Joseph Ratzinger, teacher of catechism in our fourth-grade class in the 1950s.  After he left our school, his hand-written letter spelled out the proper path to follow in growing up :  “If one buttons one’s coat the wrong way, one would have to undo all of it and start over again to make it right.  So it is with life,” admonishing us “to choose the right beginning.”

In short, 'Trauterose' is the account of one person's search for humanity in existence—a cautionary tale on the inherited guilt created by rampant nationalism, and a painfully honest and often humorous view of the world through the eyes of a young woman who found her way to freedom and purpose.

Readers and reviewers have expressed praise for Trauterose. Craig Jones of IndieReader wrote, "TRAUTEROSE (Growing Up in Postwar Munich) by Elisabeth Haggblade offers an uncompromising, moving, and elegiac memoir of a deprived childhood in postwar Germany." Midwest Book Review said, "Libraries seeking powerful, personal memoirs that hold political and social lessons and insights will find Trauterose a study in adaptation, survival, and growth. It also deserves attention from young adult and adult book clubs seeking memoirs that reflect not just individual experience, but a sense of the culture and times."

One Amazon review stated, "The book is extremely well written, and I would recommend it highly." Another said, "I highly recommend this book. It will touch your heart." Another wrote, "It offers an unforgettable window into a time and place that few Americans know about."

The Trauma Of Aging And The Possibility Of A Full Life Addressed By Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Bestselling Book, Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience. The ebook version is a bestseller in the Single Author Short Stories category.

When we think about aging, we don't necessarily think about the trauma that may accompany it for some. Aging can become a disturbing or distressing experience that can evoke a deeply emotional response. The psychological impact of aging is compounded in Western society by its attitudes toward its older members. Youth and vitality are celebrated, often at the expense of honoring the wisdom and experience that come with age.

These attitudes and perceptions can lead to isolation and feelings of loneliness and worthlessness among older adults. In many cases, aging presents a challenge, which may involve physical decline, social neglect and inner turmoil.

Yet, we know that many older adults maintain good health and cognitive functioning. Aging is a diverse process and there are great differences between individuals. Things usually aren't as bleak as many people expect.

Research tells us that there are a great number of artists and musicians who became more creative and generative later in life. People need to know they have opportunities improve their outlook and to shape the process by making good lifestyle choices. These choices include important aspects such as nutrition, physical and intellectual activity, among others.

Referencing the movie "Queen Bees" starring Ellen Burstyn, bestselling author Dr. Kixx Goldman addressed this vitally important issue in a piece posted on her website titled, "Healing My Own Trauma Of Aging". In that piece she said in part:

“If Ellen Burstyn can do it, so can I. And so can Joe Biden.” That’s what I repeated to myself as I watched in awe as this charming Netflix trope of the “Queen Bees” unfolded on our screen.

The story is about Helen, an older, independent widow – played by Ms. Burstyn– who moves temporarily into a senior community while her home is being repaired, with surprising results–including romance with Dan –played by James Caan.

Alas, none of the tributes to Dianne Feinstein were even acknowledged or alluded to in Fareed’s discussion.

My shock at this trashing of our older population led me to the Internet and my exploration of the American Psychological Association’s “take” on our society’s attitudes on aging.

Kixx earned graduate degrees in education and counseling psychology. In her private practice, she helped couples untangle fight cycles and recreate emotional intimacy. She also worked with individuals and families, and taught workshops on personal empowerment and conflict resolution. As a consultant in public schools, she helped students overcome learning problems and develop social skills.

Create Your Own Blueprint For Healing Your Trauma - Unique Approaches And Individual Differences In Healing Trauma By Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience.

Traumatic events, unlike what many of us are led to believe, can take many forms, extending beyond those that are violent or life-threatening. Trauma can be experienced as a result of social interactions, cultural influences, events in childhood and a host of other origins. Every form of trauma is unique to the individual. Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of “Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard,” addressed this issue in a article posted on her website. In that article she said, in part:

“We study Trauma to explore and understand how it affects our biology, perceptions of our world and our psychological and emotional functioning in that world.

Trauma encompasses distressing or disturbing experiences which can leave us frightened and anxious. These experiences are part of life!

They test our resilience.

When I wrote my book Speak from your Heart and Be Heard: Stories of Courage and Healing, I didn’t set out to write about trauma and healing. But when I finished and looked back at my stories, I discovered I’d written about my own life experiences as well as fictionalized traumatic events in the lives of my clients.

Readers agree. Their feedback and reviews affirm that the stories are about healing trauma!

These days, people use the words ‘trauma’ and ‘traumatic’ a lot—in relation to all kinds of experiences. Let’s look at a relevant definition?

Let’s define what we mean by a traumatic event: “I believe Trauma comes in many forms, not always of a violent or life-threatening nature.

Failing an exam, being criticized by a parent or partner, even forgetting our lines in a play—can be traumatic for us. I call these ‘Everyday Traumas.’

Something like 9-11 or the Vietnam War would be considered a ‘Horrendous Trauma.’

Trauma expert Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk talks a lot about the suffering and traumatic effects of both 9-11 and Vietnam. He’s worked with many people affected by those events and describes trauma as "something horrendous, that makes you stare with horror--” you can’t possibly imagine what you would do and you think your life is over…”

The doctor tells a story about a five-year-old boy—wise and compassionate beyond his years. The boy lived near the towers in New York and witnessed the 9-11 fires and people screaming and jumping out of windows. The heartwarming part of the story is that the boy drew a large, round object underneath the people jumping. When asked what it was, he said, “it’s a trampoline to catch them, so they won’t die.”

In his groundbreaking book, Dr. Van der Kolk notes that Trauma is an experience or event that produces actual physiological changes, including a recalibration of the brain’s alarm system, an increase in stress hormone activity and an alteration in the system that filters relevant from irrelevant information.

Trauma can indeed create various changes in the brain. People respond to and process trauma in very different ways.”

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

Have you ever wondered:

Why some people are able to overcome their grief over traumatic events and cope successfully to become happy and fulfilled while others remain hopeless and stuck?

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing' has received rave reviews from readers and reviewers. Leslie S. Greenberg, PhD, distinguished Research Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Psychology, York University said, " In each story, the characters' resilience is illustrated by how they transform difficult life stories into constructive final narratives. They find the courage to triumph over challenges to heal and they grow. The message of the book: speaking one's truth makes for desired change and healing."

In her review, Liz Moulden said, "The short stories from Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard have given me a second chance and a voice, the voice I never had. What's exciting about this book is each main character in these short stories experienced some kind of abuse/ trauma but each finds their inner voice. With help, they're able to heal. Anyone who has ever experienced abuse or trauma as I have will be able to see snapshots of themselves in these stories."

Create Your Own Blueprint For Healing Your Trauma - The Trauma Of Parental Separation Can Be Resolved Says Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Speak From Your Heard And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience.

When children are separated from their parents, they often endure profound trauma. It is a heart-breaking experience that can deeply affect their emotional well-being. What happens to these fragile beings when they are taken from their primary source of security and love?

This situation is complex and distressing. This form of trauma tends to erode children’s self- esteem and can manifest in various ways, including anxiety and depression. It can lead to self-destructive or anti-social behaviors. These children, who are in the process of forming their sense of self, struggle to comprehend the sudden loss of their caregivers. They are left grappling with questions that a child should not have to ponder: "Why did my parents leave me?" or "Will they ever come back?"

The resulting emotional scars can have a profound effect on their mental and emotional development, echoing through their lives long after the separation has occurred. Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of 'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing,' addressed this issue in an article posted on her site titled, "Children Caught In The Crossfire." In that article she wrote in part:

Most of us have had experience with trauma in our lives. I’ve worked with many clients who’ve reached out to me in their times of distress and trauma. I helped a single mother whose fears of losing her children brought her to therapy. As a young child, “Charlotte,” spent many evenings locked in the car alone during her mother’s long bouts drinking in the bar. When I met her, Charlotte was addicted to prescription meds. She arrived wild-eyed, hair flying, her complexion a grey pallor. She wanted to quit for her children’s sake and longed to go to a detox center but feared social services would take her children away, as they had once before.

I vowed to help my client. Aware of the damaging effects of family separation on children, I knew it was critical to protect Charlotte and her children. I’ve understood the importance of young children’s secure and consistent attachment with a parent figure since reading the work of British psychologist and father of attachment theory, John Bowlby.

My short story, “Caught in the Crossfire,” inspired by my work with Charlotte, is about the effects of children being separated from their parents. It offers hope and resolution . . .

Psychoanalyst Dr. Nancy Burke says trauma freezes people in time. Children who are traumatized, particularly those who haven’t acquired the language to conceptualize their feelings or put them into words,  can’t say what’s frightening them. As a result, many “act out,” and are not able to relate to their parents or others in a meaningful way. Research confirms neurological and emotional consequences of separation.

Tragically, despite all the hope and joy when parents are reunited with their children, it may be a shock rather than a happy ending. Parents aren’t always prepared for the long period of recovery. Even if returning children do have language, they don’t always have access to their feelings and can’t put them into words, making relationships difficult. One child couldn’t speak, but sat in his play group chewing on a Nerf ball and biting it to pieces. Charlotte’s toddler couldn’t draw, but could only chew on crayons when she returned. As Dr. Burke points out, “normal reactions to abnormal circumstances look abnormal.”

In Charlotte’s case, the system had overreached itself in the past, by taking her children away. Yet, I do believe we have to draw the line somewhere. Children neglected by parents “under the influence” are surely at risk and, of course, we need them to be protected. I feel compassion for both the children and their parents, at the same time. Fortunately, in Charlotte’s case, we were able to help her detox without leaving her home to do it. We also mandated her attendance at our parenting skills program and followed up with family therapy for a year. After her rehabilitation, Charlotte went back to school and had a successful career as a counselor.

Speak From Your Heart and Be Heard By Dr. Kixx Goldman Offers Inspirational Stories Of Trauma, Courage And Healing

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience.

For those suffering from trauma of any kind, healing is of paramount importance, as it helps individuals to reclaim their lives, restore a sense of inner peace, and foster overall well-being. Trauma can affect a person deeply, emotionally and physically, leading to a range of symptoms and difficulties. Healing from trauma promotes resilience, empowering individuals to regain a sense of control, rebuild trust in themselves and others, and cultivate healthier coping mechanisms. This paves the way for personal growth, enhancing self-compassion and self-esteem, and empowers individuals to form healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Inspirational stories possess a remarkable power to facilitate healing and resilience in the face of trauma. By sharing tales of triumph over adversity, these kinds of stories can provide a source of hope and encouragement for individuals grappling with their own traumatic experiences. They can offer a sense of integration and connection, reminding survivors that they are not alone in their struggles, and that it is possible to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.

Inspiring stories can help provide a roadmap for healing, offering valuable insights, coping strategies, and the reassurance that recovery is attainable. Readers can find solace, inspiration, and the motivation to embark on their own journey of healing and growth.

This healing process is the focus of Dr. Kixx Goldman's most recent book, 'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard'. In this book, Dr. Goldman explores the nature of intuition and resilience. When people honor their intuition, the "little voice" inside, and speak openly about their feelings, they thrive in their relationships.

The eight engaging fictional stories in this collection are personal, drawn from experiences in Dr. Kixx's life and the lives of her clients. The characters are tested by everyday traumas . . .

• A devoted father and his daughter find hope in rewriting their past.
• With remarkable grit, a teacher escapes a surprise attack.
• To heal his childhood wounds, a man must conquer his fears.
• A therapist defies the establishment to protect her clients.
• As she confronts the church, a therapist regains her standing.
• A woman learns the risks of not speaking out.
• By sharing her story and bonding with peers, a woman overcomes her trauma.

As the characters in these stories find the courage to triumph over their challenges, they heal and grow.

Inspired by real life people, characters show us how we can find the courage to transform difficult and traumatic life experiences, speak our truth and reclaim our power. 'Speak from Your Heart' offers the reader a guided tour of unique and powerful approaches to healing trauma. An added feature and treat for readers, Behind the Scenes reveals more about the source of the stories.

"This book is about Bringing our Stories to Life. And it’s about how writing can change your life,” Goldman noted.

“Creating this collection of short fiction has been transformative. After my children were grown, I had time to rediscover fiction.

“That’s when I decided to follow writer Toni Morrison’s advice, ‘If there’s a book you really want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.’

“Before I knew it, I began to write about my life and the words flowed. Stories animated by my personal experiences, and my professional work with clients, made their way onto the page. Filtering the stories through the lens of fiction helped to breathe life into the characters and illuminate their relationships.

“I reached into the recesses of my soul to create these stories.”

The book has received rave reviews from readers and reviewers.

Long Term Success In Recovery From Alcohol And Drug Abuse - A Change In Perception Is Key Says Harriet Hunter, Award-Winning Author Of 'Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations Of Hope, Courage and Faith'

Hunter's award-winning book features 365-powerful daily inspirations based on the A.A. 12 Step Program.

In the New York Times Best Seller, “The Book of Secrets,” Deepak Chopra speaks at the end of Chapter 6, “Freedom Tames the Mind,” about how real growth happens in many dimensions. “What happens to you, can affect how you think, feel, relate to others, behave in a given situation, fit into your surroundings, perceive the future or perceive yourself. All these dimensions must evolve in order for you to evolve.”

Harriet Hunter, award-winning author of “Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith” believes that having a change in perspective as a person in recovery, is vital to the long-term success in recovery.

"As with everything in life that we do, regardless of how small, efforts to change our perspective require a focused inner determination, a trust in the process of seeing our life and the people in it differently. To change anything demands a continued practice that speaks to our inner-self of being where we’re supposed to be. Even when what we ‘see’ cannot be relied upon, we come to believe that nothing is as it seems, but with consistency, it will feel the way it is supposed to be.

"Changing our perspective is an act of humility. It exclaims, ‘I never looked at it that way!’ It is a conscious willingness to set aside our own ideas and thoughts of what we think we know, to trust and embrace new ways of assessing and looking at some fact of our life, or person, or place, or thing through the eyes of awareness and transparency.

"To change our perspective is to cultivate a Universal Truth; that is, we think we have all the answers (to some situation, some place or thing,) but we do not. And we never will. Why is that? Because to have the answers is to believe we have need for nothing bigger than ourselves. In our minds, we have become the Almighty, believing erroneously we have answers for others and, of course, we do not. Answers concerning anyone other than ourselves belong to our Higher Power, and are none of our business.

"To change our perspective about ourself is to concede that somewhere, maybe not so deep down in the grey. In between black and white thinking lies enough of the answer we need to accept that nothing is ever as originally thought.

"When we change our perspective, we acknowledge and surrender to the fact that we don’t know what is right and just for us. The mere acknowledgment of this fact speaks to a departure, a shift in what we thought we knew about ourselves, to new visions of the person we want to be.

To a person so determined, this “reflection,” or shift in our perspective, discovers the beginning of an unmistakable change in direction in our present knowing. With this shift, comes the confidence in ourself, that assures a sustained positive energy, sufficient to overcome and not be deterred in the face of adversity. This change confirms our intuitive knowing and a rationalize steeped in emotional maturity and fortitude. Enmeshed within our highest-self, our vision and energized conviction is our ability to overcome anything. And with this strong mindset, we do."

More information and a large number of related resources are available at no charge at her website at http://www.harriethunter.org.

While there are many treatment approaches and programs, what is common to all successful individuals within a substance abuse program is the shared pain and the loneliness, oftentimes with an ongoing support system for the person battling the disease. That support system is what Harriet Hunter offers in “Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith.”

Featuring 365-daily inspirations. Miracles of Recovery was written not just for those addicted, but for the parents, the spouses - anyone touched by the disease because addiction is absolutely a family affair. With the foundation of 12-Steps, Miracles of Recovery embraces holistic suggestions as a practical approach for those who must face life on life's terms, clean and sober. Encouraging and thought-provoking, Miracles of Recovery inspires with Universal Truths, “because,” Harriet says, “Once we know better, we do better.” Miracles of Recovery is written to show through personal examples how to achieve long-term sobriety, regardless of what happens in one's life and offers a personal, sometimes raw reflection of the truth about addiction seldom seen elsewhere.

The new book encourages readers to embrace healthy, positive thoughts by taking actions necessary to reinforce a new way of thinking. Tools necessary to maintain sobriety and change one's life through changing one’s perspective are also proposed. It suggests that readers "Do life differently," through exercises, solutions, and methods to improve self-esteem, confidence, and embrace a profound sense of hope needed to succeed. The author spurs the reader to embrace the belief that, regardless of challenges life presents, “NOTHING can change the course of recovery when you keep yourself, your sobriety, and your Higher Power first in your lives.” In short, Miracles of Recovery offers hope where there is none through a simple program of actions for complicated people.

Hunter has received rave reviews for her work from readers and reviewers alike. Vernita Taylor of Readers Favorite stated, “Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage, and Faith by Harriet Hunter is a great choice if you’re struggling with addiction because it offers a full year of inspiration and affirmations which I enjoyed. I see this book as a mentor or sponsor that is walking by your side and helping to lead you to a better, more improved you while teaching you how to deal with your stressors. The best teacher is someone who has been there and done that and this book doesn’t disappoint. The author knows first-hand what it takes and how it feels to be addicted, and the journey to recovery. If you need help along your journey, pick up a copy of this book; it’s highly recommended.”

Anthony Capozzolli of Dismantled Life Podcast said, “Miracles of Recovery has been a feast for my recovering soul. Every page is filled with love and helpful insights that lead to discovery. I read each page by date and randomly turn to other pages for an additional spiritual hug when I need one. It’s almost as if Harriet wrote her wonderful book for me. Page after page hits so close to home I often tear up from positive awareness and clarity of emotion.”

Miracles of Recovery received the first place President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association.

Since her walk into recovery in 1999, Harriet has had one primary purpose: to show others how they can achieve their miracles while staying sober with a vision and determination to never go backwards, one day at a time.

Using her experience strength and hope, Harriet strives to be a conduit of encouragement to others in their disease of alcoholism and drugs of choice, by showing them what continues to work. Recovery From Alcoholism And Drug Abuse Can Be Achieved Through Faith, Hope And Courage Says Harriet Hunter, Award-Winning Author Of Miracles Of Recovery

Hunter's award-winning book, “Miracles Of Recovery: Daily Meditations Of Hope, Courage and Faith,” features 365-powerful daily inspirations based on the A.A. 12 Step Program.

Alcoholism is not a recent phenomenon. Alcoholism and other forms of addiction have been with us for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the situation is worsening today. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found increases in all categories and age groups in their 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. COVID, and all of its residual hardships, have dramatically accentuated the number being reported, including deaths from alcoholism, drugs and suicide.

Nobody is immune. Those who suffer from alcoholism can be found from the boardroom to the mail room. Celebrities who have battled alcohol addiction include the late Amy Winehouse, Shia LaBeouf, Bradley Cooper, Mel Gibson and Janeane Garofalo to name a few. Some of our coworkers, some of our neighbors and most likely some of our family members continue to suffer, most often in silence from alcoholism and drug abuse.

While there are many treatment approaches and programs, what is common to all successful individuals within a substance abuse program is the pain and the loneliness shared, together with an ongoing support system for the person battling the disease. That support system is what Harriet Hunter provides in Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith.

Featuring 365-daily inspirations. Miracles of Recovery was written not just for those addicted, but for the parents, the spouses - anyone touched by the disease because addiction is absolutely a family affair. Using the 12-Steps as its foundation, Miracles of Recovery embraces a holistic solution as a practical approach for those who must face life on life's terms, clean and sober. Encouraging and thought-provoking, Miracles of Recovery inspires with Universal Truths, “because,” Harriet says, “Once we know better, we do better.” Miracles of Recovery is written to show through example how to achieve long-term sobriety, regardless of what happens in one's life and brings a personal, sometimes raw reflection of the truth about addiction seldom seen elsewhere.

The new book encourages readers to embrace healthy, positive thoughts by taking the necessary actions to reinforce this new way of thinking. Miracles of Recovery provides the tools necessary to work the 12 Steps and change one's life by changing one’s perspective. It suggests that readers "Do life differently," through exercises, solutions, and methods to improve self-esteem, confidence, and embrace a profound sense of hope needed to succeed. The author encourages the reader to embrace the belief that, regardless of challenges life presents, “NOTHING can change the course of recovery when you keep yourself, your sobriety, and your Higher Power first in your lives.” In short, Miracles of Recovery offers hope where there is none through a simple program of actions for complicated people.

“Without the gift of desperation, (where we see ourselves overlooking the great crevasse of life or death,) we would never be able to face our own denial enough to admit that alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases of perception and that we would die trying to overcome,” Hunter stated. “In chronic drinkers gravely affected, we understand that alcoholism is progressive which makes it particularly deadly. People die not because of lengthy years of sobriety, and then they slip, but rather because they forget we are never cured, only through abstinence. We are not, ‘Like normal people, nor will we ever be.’ For instance, those of us in long-term recovery understand that once we cross that imaginary line of no return into alcoholic or drug insanity, we can never return to a normal life. We’ve heard it said ‘We cannot change a pickle back into a cucumber.’ We live with and understand the depth of our allergy, the psychological and long-term, often irreversible physiological effects our disease has on us.

“Alcoholism is well documented as being a three-fold disease that, once we pass through the phenomenon of craving, affects us physically, emotionally and spiritually. This is not a situation of weakness, of sloth, or of being pulled up by our bootstraps. ‘If it were that easy to quit there would BE no alcoholism!’ ‘We are drinking to overcome a craving beyond our mental control.’ (Taken from AA, page xxx}”

Author G. J. Berger Receives 'Recommended' Review From Historical Novel Society For Debut Historical Novel, 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon'

G. J. Berger's historical fiction novel, 'South Of Burnt Rocks', offers the stirring tale of the Iberian Celtic clan as it battles the Roman Empire

G. J. Berger's historical fiction novel, 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon', has received a glowing 'recommended' review from the Historical Novel Society .

This highly respected, international society reviews  US and UK mainstream published historical titles and other English language books. The group holds competitions to discover new authors and conferences bringing authors and readers together.

Berger stated, "The Historical Novel Society is both the go-to source for lovers of historical fiction and a wonderful resource for authors. Receiving this review is, to this point, the high point for my debut historical novel."

As a writer, G. J. Berger hopes to transport readers to places and times available nowhere else. 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon' is built upon and around the seldom heard tales of Celtic fighting women.

"South Of Burnt Rocks" has already received fine reviews from a number of reviewers. Kirkus Reviews stated, "Smartly written, the novel moves quickly....The simple yet powerful narrative relies on a commanding cast of characters,... Berger beautifully crafts them as more than one-dimensional warriors....Berger also builds an elaborate world full of small details that add depth and historical context."

Awesome Indies posted a review that stated in part, "Written with an engrossing breadth of detail about the Celts and the Romans, with a sympathetic slant towards the people on both sides of the conflict, and with a depth of knowledge that he imparts effortlessly to the reader, G J Berger has written a compelling story of adventure, fortitude, revenge and love.  The main characters stand out against a supporting cast of well-drawn minor characters.  Pacing is superb, driving the reader onwards."

The Historical Novel Society review echoes these with, "Berger’s well-researched and engrossing novel . . . . Berger’s outstanding talent for stirring set pieces and gripping action sequences . . . and really succeeds in bringing this time period alive."

G.J. Berger is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at gjberger@hotmail.com. 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon' is available at Amazon, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble and most bookstores. About G. J. Berger:

When G. J. was eight, his mom told him the story of Hannibal crossing the Alps with elephants and a great army. He asked her what happened to Hannibal after that. Mom didn’t know, but he was hooked, had to find out, had to write about it.

G. J. spent much of his young life on the road and at sea, even working as a crew member on a tramp steamer. Wherever his travels took him, old walls, canals, even storage holes deep in the ground, made him wonder about how they got there, about the people who built them, how they lived and got along.

The result is this and two other novels-to-be wherein the places, the history, even some of the ‘Burnt Rocks’ characters do and did exist.

When not writing, G. J. tries to roam around the places he writes about, likes to sit and soak up the times back then and bring them to modern life in his stories. G. J. is convinced that for all the changes in last 2000 years, people loved and hated, suffered and rejoiced, destroyed and built in the same ways then as they do today.

G. J. lives in San Diego with his favorite grammarian and English Professor.

Author G. J. Berger Receives More Industry Praise For His Historical Fiction Book 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon'

G. J. Berger is fast becoming renowned for offering readers epic stories not available elsewhere. His engrossing historical fiction novel, 'South Of Burnt Rocks', offers the stirring tale of the Iberian Celtic clan as it battles the Roman Empire and is a finalist in the 2013 San Diego Book Awards

Positive industry reviews are a key factor that can lead to success for any historical fiction book. G. J. Berger's recent historical fiction release, 'South Of Burnt Rocks, West Of The Moon', a finalist in the 2013 San Diego Book Awards, has received glowing reviews from a number of high profile reviewers.

Recently Awesome Indies posted a review that stated in part, "Written with an engrossing breadth of detail about the Celts and the Romans, with a sympathetic slant towards the people on both sides of the conflict, and with a depth of knowledge that he imparts effortlessly to the reader, G J Berger has written a compelling story of adventure, fortitude, revenge and love.  The main characters stand out against a supporting cast of well-drawn minor characters.  Pacing is superb, driving the reader onwards.  G J Berger’s writing style is direct and pared down, as befits a book of this nature.  Descriptive passages are moving and show very well how the landscape is used in Lavena’s fight against the invaders, and the animals – horses and dogs, add an extra dimension to the story. For any reader who loves to sink into the distant past, this is a story that will not disappoint."

"Awesome Indies," Berger stated, "selects only those novels that measure up to the standards set by established publishing houses. Plot, characters, pace, the actual writing and look of the work must all pass through an independent and rigorous review, sometime two or even three reviews. I'm honored that of 'South of Burnt Rocks' is included in Awesome Indies. AI's splendid review gives readers comfort that 'South of Burnt Rocks' is well worth it."

The storyline of the book brings ancient times alive while offering a tribute to Celtic fighting women, select warriors seldom mentioned in historical fiction books. Berger attempts to bring this story, half-lost in the mists of history, to modern readers of historical fiction.

"The story, its characters, the places where it unfolds," Berger continued, "will transport readers to a fascinating time not commonly known. Rich with details from 2000 years ago but still never cluttered up with too much or too many, 'Burnt Rocks' is based on real events of Roman-era history, The novel paints a timeless drama of a 'she-warrior' tribal leader fighting a brutal oppressor with little more than the courage of those who have nothing left to lose."
