The Trauma Of Aging And The Possibility Of A Full Life Addressed By Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Bestselling Book, Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience. The ebook version is a bestseller in the Single Author Short Stories category.

When we think about aging, we don't necessarily think about the trauma that may accompany it for some. Aging can become a disturbing or distressing experience that can evoke a deeply emotional response. The psychological impact of aging is compounded in Western society by its attitudes toward its older members. Youth and vitality are celebrated, often at the expense of honoring the wisdom and experience that come with age.

These attitudes and perceptions can lead to isolation and feelings of loneliness and worthlessness among older adults. In many cases, aging presents a challenge, which may involve physical decline, social neglect and inner turmoil.

Yet, we know that many older adults maintain good health and cognitive functioning. Aging is a diverse process and there are great differences between individuals. Things usually aren't as bleak as many people expect.

Research tells us that there are a great number of artists and musicians who became more creative and generative later in life. People need to know they have opportunities improve their outlook and to shape the process by making good lifestyle choices. These choices include important aspects such as nutrition, physical and intellectual activity, among others.

Referencing the movie "Queen Bees" starring Ellen Burstyn, bestselling author Dr. Kixx Goldman addressed this vitally important issue in a piece posted on her website titled, "Healing My Own Trauma Of Aging". In that piece she said in part:

“If Ellen Burstyn can do it, so can I. And so can Joe Biden.” That’s what I repeated to myself as I watched in awe as this charming Netflix trope of the “Queen Bees” unfolded on our screen.

The story is about Helen, an older, independent widow – played by Ms. Burstyn– who moves temporarily into a senior community while her home is being repaired, with surprising results–including romance with Dan –played by James Caan.

The message of the film is about the possibilities of life in senior years.

In the film, made a few years ago, Ellen Burstyn is an attractive, articulate, fit looking woman in her mid-eighties.

Although I, too, qualify as an aging member of society, I prefer to think of myself, like Ellen’s character, as an energetic and fit ‘superager.’

Hooked and encouraged by this uplifting tale, the film was a great balm for my own traumatic responses which had been in great need of healing, after watching Fareed Zakaria’s CNN show, on October 1st of ’23:

To my great dismay, only two days after she’d been laid to rest, Diane Feinstein’s photo flashed on the screen during Fareed’s Sunday GPS (global public square) show, without so much as a respectful word to honor an accomplished senator who’d contributed so much to our country.

I was appalled when Ms. Feinstein’s photo was followed by Fareed’s question posed to his guests,

“What is it about American politics that’s attracting a kind of Gerontocracy?”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of Fareed’s Sunday morning show. His messages raise my awareness of current events and I often agree with his politics and analyses of troubling world situations. Issues are usually carefully considered and explored with fairness and intelligence.

The October 1st show was no exception—at least, up until that segment!

In this unfortunate segment, Fareed’s ‘gerontocracy’ question became a jumping off point for a desultory discussion on the pitfalls of “old folks in politics” and bashing of several of our aging politicians in the US.

When Fareed declared Ms. Feinstein was “not the only person in the US Senate these days who makes you wonder whether they’ll die before they retire. Is America’s leadership so old,” the full flush of fury began to take up residence in my body. I’d been close to hurtling a missive at my TV screen before, but this time, I came the closest.

Before that Sunday show, I’d been reading impressive tributes to Ms. Feinstein, the veteran senator. I’d been delighted to see the recognition for a woman who “worked so tirelessly on behalf of California and all of America.” (Bill Clinton). Throughout her illustrious career, she championed worthwhile causes and fought for what she believed in. Her work made a powerful, positive impact on the lives of so many.

Alas, none of the tributes to Dianne Feinstein were even acknowledged or alluded to in Fareed’s discussion.

My shock at this trashing of our older population led me to the Internet and my exploration of the American Psychological Association’s “take” on our society’s attitudes on aging.

In her cover story on Monitor on Psychology, Author Kirsten Weir reported that, “Psychologists are examining the age discrimination that pervades American culture and helping people to reimagine healthier relationships with their older selves…

Ageism is one of the last socially acceptable prejudices. Psychologists are working to change that.

“From antiaging face creams to wisecracking birthday cards about getting older to “OK, boomer” memes, the message is clear: Being old is something to avoid."

Create Your Own Blueprint For Healing Your Trauma - Unique Approaches And Individual Differences In Healing Trauma By Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience.

Traumatic events, unlike what many of us are led to believe, can take many forms, extending beyond those that are violent or life-threatening. Trauma can be experienced as a result of social interactions, cultural influences, events in childhood and a host of other origins. Every form of trauma is unique to the individual. Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of “Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard,” addressed this issue in a article posted on her website. In that article she said, in part:

“We study Trauma to explore and understand how it affects our biology, perceptions of our world and our psychological and emotional functioning in that world.

Trauma encompasses distressing or disturbing experiences which can leave us frightened and anxious. These experiences are part of life!

They test our resilience.

When I wrote my book Speak from your Heart and Be Heard: Stories of Courage and Healing, I didn’t set out to write about trauma and healing. But when I finished and looked back at my stories, I discovered I’d written about my own life experiences as well as fictionalized traumatic events in the lives of my clients.

Readers agree. Their feedback and reviews affirm that the stories are about healing trauma!

These days, people use the words ‘trauma’ and ‘traumatic’ a lot—in relation to all kinds of experiences. Let’s look at a relevant definition?

Let’s define what we mean by a traumatic event: “I believe Trauma comes in many forms, not always of a violent or life-threatening nature.

Failing an exam, being criticized by a parent or partner, even forgetting our lines in a play—can be traumatic for us. I call these ‘Everyday Traumas.’

Something like 9-11 or the Vietnam War would be considered a ‘Horrendous Trauma.’

Trauma expert Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk talks a lot about the suffering and traumatic effects of both 9-11 and Vietnam. He’s worked with many people affected by those events and describes trauma as "something horrendous, that makes you stare with horror--” you can’t possibly imagine what you would do and you think your life is over…”

The doctor tells a story about a five-year-old boy—wise and compassionate beyond his years. The boy lived near the towers in New York and witnessed the 9-11 fires and people screaming and jumping out of windows. The heartwarming part of the story is that the boy drew a large, round object underneath the people jumping. When asked what it was, he said, “it’s a trampoline to catch them, so they won’t die.”

In his groundbreaking book, Dr. Van der Kolk notes that Trauma is an experience or event that produces actual physiological changes, including a recalibration of the brain’s alarm system, an increase in stress hormone activity and an alteration in the system that filters relevant from irrelevant information.

Trauma can indeed create various changes in the brain. People respond to and process trauma in very different ways.”

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

Have you ever wondered:

Why some people are able to overcome their grief over traumatic events and cope successfully to become happy and fulfilled while others remain hopeless and stuck?

Create Your Own Blueprint For Healing Your Trauma - The Trauma Of Parental Separation Can Be Resolved Says Dr. Kixx Goldman, Author Of Speak From Your Heard And Be Heard

'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard' contains fictionalized inspiring stories, based on real life and professional experience.

When children are separated from their parents, they often endure profound trauma. It is a heart-breaking experience that can deeply affect their emotional well-being. What happens to these fragile beings when they are taken from their primary source of security and love?

This situation is complex and distressing. This form of trauma tends to erode children’s self- esteem and can manifest in various ways, including anxiety and depression. It can lead to self-destructive or anti-social behaviors. These children, who are in the process of forming their sense of self, struggle to comprehend the sudden loss of their caregivers. They are left grappling with questions that a child should not have to ponder: "Why did my parents leave me?" or "Will they ever come back?"

The resulting emotional scars can have a profound effect on their mental and emotional development, echoing through their lives long after the separation has occurred. Dr. Kixx Goldman, author of 'Speak From Your Heart And Be Heard: Stories Of Courage And Healing,' addressed this issue in an article posted on her site titled, "Children Caught In The Crossfire." In that article she wrote in part:

Most of us have had experience with trauma in our lives. I’ve worked with many clients who’ve reached out to me in their times of distress and trauma. I helped a single mother whose fears of losing her children brought her to therapy. As a young child, “Charlotte,” spent many evenings locked in the car alone during her mother’s long bouts drinking in the bar. When I met her, Charlotte was addicted to prescription meds. She arrived wild-eyed, hair flying, her complexion a grey pallor. She wanted to quit for her children’s sake and longed to go to a detox center but feared social services would take her children away, as they had once before.

I vowed to help my client. Aware of the damaging effects of family separation on children, I knew it was critical to protect Charlotte and her children. I’ve understood the importance of young children’s secure and consistent attachment with a parent figure since reading the work of British psychologist and father of attachment theory, John Bowlby.

My short story, “Caught in the Crossfire,” inspired by my work with Charlotte, is about the effects of children being separated from their parents. It offers hope and resolution . . .

Psychoanalyst Dr. Nancy Burke says trauma freezes people in time. Children who are traumatized, particularly those who haven’t acquired the language to conceptualize their feelings or put them into words,  can’t say what’s frightening them. As a result, many “act out,” and are not able to relate to their parents or others in a meaningful way. Research confirms neurological and emotional consequences of separation.

Tragically, despite all the hope and joy when parents are reunited with their children, it may be a shock rather than a happy ending. Parents aren’t always prepared for the long period of recovery. Even if returning children do have language, they don’t always have access to their feelings and can’t put them into words, making relationships difficult. One child couldn’t speak, but sat in his play group chewing on a Nerf ball and biting it to pieces. Charlotte’s toddler couldn’t draw, but could only chew on crayons when she returned. As Dr. Burke points out, “normal reactions to abnormal circumstances look abnormal.”

In Charlotte’s case, the system had overreached itself in the past, by taking her children away. Yet, I do believe we have to draw the line somewhere. Children neglected by parents “under the influence” are surely at risk and, of course, we need them to be protected. I feel compassion for both the children and their parents, at the same time. Fortunately, in Charlotte’s case, we were able to help her detox without leaving her home to do it. We also mandated her attendance at our parenting skills program and followed up with family therapy for a year. After her rehabilitation, Charlotte went back to school and had a successful career as a counselor.
