50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading Book Awards Accepting Votes From Public For 2017 Awards

'50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' has been called the 'People's Choice Awards' for authors of fiction and non-fiction books

'50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' awards contest is now accepting votes from the public. While most awards programs hand out awards for books, it is the ARTIST behind the book who should be the focus of the award. Most authors overcome tremendous challenges and work very hard to bring their work to market. The '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' awards contest looks for the 'story behind the story'.

An award given for a single book impacts one book only. An award given to an author impacts all the works of that author, past, present and future. As in the world of film, some awards are for best movies, others are for best actors or actresses.  Using this analogy '50 Great Writers' bestows awards upon the writer (actor/actress).

In that the contest is about the author, participants can submit an essay about their writing journey/career, their expectations as authors, a summary of their body of work and basic information about their books. Those who wish to do so may instead submit an excerpt from the book. The public at large is then invited to read these essays and decide whom to vote for.

Authors must build long-term platforms to create ongoing sales and achieve success. People buy books because of the personality BEHIND the work. It is for these reasons '50 Great Writers' focuses sharply on the real story and the personality behind the book.

Linda Marie Frank is a native of New York City. Her life-long career has been in teaching. She taught in Seaford, in the Middle School when it was a Junior High, and in the High School.  She taught science, ending her career in the high school as Department Chairperson, teaching biology, chemistry and forensic science. She went on to teach at Hofstra University, forensic science and biotechnology. She also supervised science student teachers at Adelphi University.

It was her forensic science courses coupled with her love of Nancy Drew and other mystery heroes that led her to write the Annie Tillery Mysteries, ‘The Madonna Ghost’ and ‘Girl With Pencil, Drawing’, 'Secrets in the Fairy Chimneys' and 'The Mystery of the Lost Avenger'.

Linda Marie Frank is a native of New York City. Her life-long career has been in teaching. She taught in Seaford, in the Middle School when it was a Junior High, and in the High School.  She taught science, ending her career in the high school as Department Chairperson, teaching biology, chemistry and forensic science. She went on to teach at Hofstra University, forensic science and biotechnology. She also supervised science student teachers at Adelphi University.

It was her forensic science courses coupled with her love of Nancy Drew and other mystery heroes that led her to write the Annie Tillery Mysteries, ‘The Madonna Ghost’ and ‘Girl With Pencil, Drawing’.

She was awarded the Seaford High School Teacher of the Year in 1989, and received an award from the American Association of University Women in 1995 for inspiring young women to pursue the field of science.

R.G. Bud Phelps graduated from the University of Nebraska School Of Agriculture (UNSA) in 1949, the only agriculture high school in the state. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married, Patricia Kelly, in 1955. Today they live in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bud and Pat enjoy spending time with their family including three daughters, three sons-in-law, four grand-kids, and one great-grandson, who also all live in Lincoln.

'The Vase With The Many Coloured Marbles' is a story about the racial discrimination based on the color of one’s skin in apartheid South Africa and how many within the country secretly fought against the system that was eventually abolished when Nelson Mandela became President. The story is about people the author knew who fought the system and how one young girl, Emily Kleintjies, born into the Coloured community in District Six of Cape Town, managed to cross the racial barrier and become a White Emma Kline, in Johannesburg. Some have called the book a Cinderella love story with a surprising and happy ending.

In the storyline, Emma (Emily,) born into a "coloured" family, feels the injustice of the segregationist society; however because she is able to "pass" as a "white," she crosses barriers that the rest of her family cannot. Emma strongly believes in the power of education. After completing high school, she is determined to attend the university, but her family is large and needs the income she could provide. Rather than work at a low-paying job in Cape Town, Emma decides to use her lighter skin and the English language she perfected to travel to Johannesburg to live and work as a "white."

Emma keeps learning, working hard, and making friends, some of whom know her secret. (Some of her friends fled Nazi Germany only to find a similar prejudice infesting the country to which they had escaped.) She sends her family money that they use to improve their house, when permitted, and educate her sisters and brothers. Behind the scenes, she works with and donates money to groups that are attempting to reverse apartheid laws, while also trying to stop the imposition of harsher new laws after the 1960's. Her daughter Marla is raised as a white, but she and many of her college friends protest the government's policies although this always causes Emma to worry that Marla's heritage will be discovered.

Nancy Alvarez began writing at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduate school in Russian History she was hired by the Follett Publishing Company to write a book about alternative high schools. Nancy wrote articles for the New York Times Magazine and Cosmopolitan. Mr. Lewis has been actively involved with martial arts since 1985. He is the author of 'The Principles And Philosophy Of Weishendo'. On June 17th, of 2009, Mr. Lewis had his first of many ER Visits to the hospital. Eight months later on February 12th, 2010, he was diagnosed with Polymyositis, and on August 25th, 2010, he was diagnosed with Lupus. Both are incurable auto-immune diseases. Polymyositis affects the muscular system of the human body, while Lupus affects every major organ of the human body.  In his Authors Show interview for his latest work, 'The Burly Man', Mr. Lewis discussed how this turn of events affected him then, and how it continues to affect his life today.

"I wrote this book," stated Mr. Lewis, "to help spread the awareness of auto - immune disease. I think readers will enjoy this book because it shows people that they can overcome incredible odds, even when faced with a life changing event."

'The Burly Man' gives readers an in-depth look at what it is like to be faced with something as life changing as an incurable disease.
