New Short Film, 'The Truth', By Barbara Becker Holstein, Official Selection At The 2016 Garden State Film Festival

Dr. Holstein's award-winning books, plays and short films focus on issues that impact teens and tweens and help them develop positive self esteem. She offers solutions to problems faced by today's youth; problems that did not exist in the past

The use of social media by teenagers has made headlines worldwide. NPR recently presented a piece entitled "Teen Girls And Social Media: A Story Of 'Secret Lives' And Misogyny". Good Morning America recently held a roundtable discussion on what kids don't want their parent to know about their cellphones. There are many more.

While most of these stories focus on the myriad problems and potentially dangerous interactions created by these trends, few focus on solutions to these problems. Positive Psychologist and author Barbara Becker Holstein instead focuses on solutions. Her books, plays and short films have won numerous awards. 'The Truth, a Short Film', Official Choice of the Garden State Film Festival, 2016, premiered at the Garden State Film Festival on Sunday, April 3, 2016. 'On the Edge of Something New' the pop song composed for 'The Truth, a Short Film' by Jayne Critelli, won the award as the Best Pop Song, 2016.

Dr. Holstein's stage play, 'The Locket', was presented at The Grange Playhouse on March 11-20, 2016 and received rave reviews. Both the new short film and the stage play center on Dr. Holstein's primary messages for teens, tweens and women of all ages.

"If you ever kept a diary, as most of us have," Dr. Holstein stated, "you probably shared or at least thought about personal feelings such as those expressed by the girl in 'The Truth, a Short Film'.  Your diary may still be in a drawer somewhere or up in the attic or lost forever.  That's they way it was in the past.  Today, when your daughter keeps a diary it can be very different.  For example in 'The Truth' the girl keeps her diary on paper, but also keeps her diary on video via her cell phone.  The question is, "Where does the diary on video end up?"  Does she just share it with a best friend or is it sent into media outer space somewhere to last forever?  Or even worse, is it shared with a stranger she has met via the web?"

"These are problems of today's world that simply didn't exist in the past. In today's world there are so many places to send videos and remarks that who can keep up?  Our tweens and teens can keep up and that's the problem.  They know apps and platforms we have not heard of. And they use them, as pointed out in an ABC story: What kids don’t want their parents to know about their cellphones. 'Tears and questions of family trust poured out when kids agreed to reveal to their parents what they’re really doing on their smartphones during a special Good Morning America roundtable.' The kids even admitted to using apps that appear to be one thing, such as a calculator, but behind the app is another function such as a platform to load pictures."

"How can a parent keep up?  Here are two suggestions:

1. Talk to your daughter about the potential dangers of her Selfies, whether photos or videos, going out there.  Lots of kids don't realize that information shared via the internet can last out there forever. Show your concern and help her understand that she may not feel the same way about Selfies she sends out now, in five years or when she is going for graduate school or a career.

2. Ask to see all the apps she keeps on her phone and how they work.  Ask to see what sites she uses to send her Selfies to. You are her parent, you can ask.  You wouldn't just let her take a bus to a town where she didn't even tell you she was going.  So stay just as insistent with the sites she is on. She may not tell you all, but an informed and interested parent is harder to hide from than someone who seems to be indifferent."

Dr. Holstein's stage play, 'The Locket', received rave reviews:

"The Locket is a play by Barbara Holstein that centers around a women who has reached a crisis point in her adult life and in her marriage. Dr. Holstein has successfully integrated several complex themes including a woman discovering the wisdom of her authentic self in dialogue with her inner child, which she came to know again in her diary from childhood. In addition to providing entertainment, 'The Locket' is a potential stimulus for healing conversation among family members."

"The Locket is an emotional tour de force that opens up your heart to the possibility that love can, indeed, last. Riveting and intense, the characters take us along on a journey to the edge of despair only to reward us with a sense of hope and optimism."

"Magical and Spiritual. 'The Locket' is a play that has something everyone can identify with. Memory of first and young love.  It's like a therapy session with a very positive learning experience."

"Young girls viewing this play are sure to walk away with a sense of validation and encouragement, more apt to trust their inner resources.  The value of internal attunement is of heightened importance in our fast-paced society, of particular merit to young girls in a world caught up in external standards and evaluations."

"What a thrill to bring to life another interpretation of The Truth, this time in the form of a one act play," Dr. Holstein stated. "I am so appreciative that I had this opportunity to move 'The Locket' from a page to stage reading to a full performance at The Grange Playhouse in Howell, New Jersey.  The actors were superb.  Excerpts from 'The Locket' and from 'The Truth' can be found at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIMJ00jmjVO9go8wJv7ifSBVuLXa2tRAV.

"Seeing the 'Girl' as a tween and as an adult woman engaged in her own dilemmas, takes the drama potential that exists in all of our lives, to a whole new level of dramatic performance."

"My vision is to take both 'The Locket' and 'The Truth' on the road, so to speak.  I see 'The Locket' published and being performed by schools and playhouses around the country.  I see 'The Locket' as someday becoming a musical, and a film.  I see 'The Truth' as a full length film and/or series in which all of the dilemmas and triumphs the girl faces can be further explored.  In the short run I am eager to make another short film based on 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Tween' in which the 'Girl' explores via her diary her next crush and much more.  Am I done?  Most certainly not.  But am I proud of my work and thrilled with all the people who have worked with me as the creations came to life?  Yes, yes, yes."

Dr. Holstein's entire body of work is great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives.

Free Download Of Trailer From New Short Film, 'The Truth', By Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Now Available

Dr. Holstein's award-winning books, plays and short films focus on issues that impact teens and tweens and help them develop positive self esteem. Her new short film was chosen to be screened at the Garden State Film Festival

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has announced a free download of the trailer for her new short film, 'The Truth'. 'The Truth' was accepted into the Garden State Film Festival. The new short film addresses issues that affect teens and tweens. While many young people struggle with these kinds of issues every day, parents, grandparents and educators may struggle just to even understand the issues involved. Many of the issues young people must face today, such as cyberbullying, did not even exist just a few year ago.

The film is based on her book, 'Secrets: Diary Of A Gutsy Tween', which was recently awarded a Silver Medal in the 2015 Moonbeam Book Awards in the Pre-Teen Fiction category.

As a Positive Psychologist, Dr. Holstein is dedicated to helping teens and tweens build self esteem. Much of her focus is on social media and how it affects young people.

In the storyline, a young girl shares her experiences, feelings and perceptions about important issues - falling in love, hating her mother, hating her parents fighting, being afraid to grow up, being upset that they may move, loving the locket her aunt gives her and feeling loved in ways by her aunt that her parents can't seem to muster, wishing the boy she is in love with would grow taller, confronting her disappointment that she has no relationship with him, sharing her glee at having a best friend and confiding in each other, coming to terms with growing up, letting go of the her first love, getting ready to move and more.

"A friend asked me, 'How does it feel as a psychologist, to now have the opportunity to see my film 'The Truth, a Short Film' accepted at the Garden State Film Festival and have your play version, 'The Locket' go into rehearsal?'

"I told her that as a psychologist it is thrilling as a lot of my life work is embedded in my two books, 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween' and 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen', upon which 'The Truth, A Short Film' and 'The Locket' are based.  Finally I can begin to see critical issues in growing up brought to life in film and drama.  I am particularly smitten with the notion of 'Self'.  It is critical in growing up to hold on to the best parts of ourselves and be able to access them.  It is also critical to be able to get in touch with the early wisdom  and playfulness that all of us once had. In the film version, the girl is able to find a secret way to hold on to the best of herself.  And in the play version, 'The Locket', Self actually comes alive as an imaginary but very real character, to help all of us remember our essential being.

"As a woman, seeing my work merge from the treatment room, to books, to a film and a play, all I can say is I am elated.  I hope I serve as a role model for many, many women and girls.  If I can be true to my 'Self', you can be true to your Self.  I am no different from you. There is a kid inside of you with brilliance, energy and courage.  She has stamina and determination and a sense of humor.  You just have to find her again or if you already have found her, start running and funning. The world will be better off for you sharing your talents."

"My friend laughed and said, 'You just made up a new word, 'Funning'.  I love it. I see what you mean.  No adult psychologist would think of that word. I bet the kid inside of you came up with it.'"

To celebrate inclusion in the Garden State Film Festival, Dr. Holstein has made a no charge download of the trailer of the film available at The Truth For Girls website at http://www.TheTruthForGirls.com.

Dr. Holstein's entire body of work is great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives.

'The Locket' will be played at The Grange Playhouse at 4860 Rt. 9, South Howell, NJ on March 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20. Tickets are $18 regular admission, $15 for seniors and students and are available by phone at 732-768-2709. Showtimes are 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, 3pm on Sundays.

'The Truth' will be shown at the Garden State Film Festival on April 1 between 3 and 5.

New Short Film, 'The Truth', By Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Chosen To Be Screened At 14th Annual Garden State Film Festival

Dr. Holstein's award-winning books, plays and short films focus on issues that impact teens and tweens and help them develop positive self esteem

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein's new short film, 'The Truth', has been accepted into the Garden State Film Festival. The new short film addresses issues that teens and tweens must contend with every day. While teens and tweens struggle with these issues, parents, grandparents and educators may struggle just to understand the issues involved. 'The Truth' is based on her book, 'Secrets: Diary Of A Gutsy Tween', just awarded a Silver Medal in the 2015 Moonbeam Book Awards in the Pre-Teen Fiction category. As a Positive Psychologist, Dr. Holstein is dedicated to helping teens and tweens build self esteem. Much of her focus is on social media and how it affects young people.

In the film, a young girl shares her experiences, feelings and perceptions about important issues - falling in love, hating her mother, hating her parents fighting, being afraid to grow up, being upset that they may move, loving the locket her aunt gives her and feeling loved in ways by her aunt that her parents can't seem to muster, wishing the boy she is in love with would grow taller, confronting her disappointment that she has no relationship with him, sharing her glee at having a best friend and confiding in each other, coming to terms with growing up, letting go of the her first love, getting ready to move and more.

"The film world is catching up with an understanding of how we need the power and beliefs in ourselves that we often have as children. I call that power  #THE ENCHANTED SELF(R)," Dr. Holstein stated.  "What do I mean by that?  Simply that if we disregard the child within us we forfeit a lot of happiness and success.  We may even bring on depression.  #TheEnchantedSelf is the sense of well-being and happiness that exists when we are true to our authentic selves.  And that always includes our early dreams, ambitions, successes, and frustrations.  It is within the energy system of the child that the exuberance for life starts.  And hopefully it doesn't stop, but it may, if we don't respect our own preferences, interests, talents, and potential."

"Two films clearly bring up #TheEnchantedSelf.  'Joy' is the real life story of a woman (played by #Jennifer Lawrence, who is up for an #AcademyAward for best actress) who's energy to become the person she is meant to be lies so clearly in the little girl that she was. The child who was inventive and creative. Even though that part of her was pushed aside by her parents divorcing and all sorts of other life problems, that girl was still there hidden inside of her.  If that girl couldn't come out, she would have remained a very frustrated adult.  As Joy says in the film, 'I can't let my family take me down.'  And as an aside, millions of us wouldn't have a mop that could be wrung out without dirtying our hands."

"The other film is my short film,#'The Truth'. It is an #Official Selection at the #Garden State Film Festival! As a psychologist, turned author, turned playwright and now turned producer, director and script writer, it is such a treat for me to show my first film at GSFF - having lived and worked in New Jersey for so many years and consider the state my home."

"What is most important about this film is that 'The Truth' reflects #TheEnchantedSelf.  The young girl, played by Cassidy Terracciano, has all the angst of moving from childhood to adolescence that most of us have had: a disappointing crush, a move to a new town, questions about growing up, family issues, father needing a new job, etc. She also deals with issues we never had to face.  For example, she keeps her diary in a journal and also makes her own Selfie versions of her diary entries that she videos of herself on her phone.  There are lots of potential problems there, such as what will she do with those videos?  Will they go on to social media sites? Will they be erased? Do her parents know?"

"Yet, she finds a way to take into the next part of her life, the best of herself.  It is a secret way that she knows she can't share with her family, but that doesn't matter.  It gives her the courage to be herself and hold on to the most precious aspects of herself."

"My dream is that 'The Truth' like 'Joy' will influence and remind us all to rediscover who we really are by remembering the power of our own dreams and aspirations. And if we are parents or teachers we will support and guide the kids in our lives so that their dreams are not crushed."

According to the Garden State Film Festival's website, "The Garden State Film Festival was founded to promote the art of filmmaking on all levels by showcasing a wide variety of film, video and animated works as well as provide educational programs in the creative arts to the public by industry leaders." The philosophy of GFFF "is rooted in the celebration of the independent film genre and the creation of a forum where local and other independent filmmakers can exhibit their work. It was also created to pay tribute to New Jersey’s legacy as the birthplace of the American filmmaking industry in Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratories where he invented the first film cameras and projectors, to Fort Lee, where the original studios were founded.  Our event provides novice and aspiring filmmakers, actors, and others interested in careers in the film business, the opportunity to meet and network with industry professionals in an atmosphere conducive to learning and mentoring."

Dr. Holstein's entire body of work is great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives.

The 14th Annual Garden State Film Festival 2016 will be held in Atlantic City, NJ, March 31–April 3, 2016.
