The New Definition Of 'Romantic Fiction' - Author Rusty Blackwood Issues Statement

Romantic fiction' and 'erotica' are both well established genres in the literary world. Romantic Fiction Author Rusty Blackwood believes there is a marked difference between 'romantic fiction' and 'erotica'

The dictionary defines romance as " . . .a novel or other prose narrative depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits, etc." Romantic fiction novels often present 'heroic' or 'marvelous' themes. But in today's marketplace it seems that the bar has been lowered, diving deeply into the realm of erotica, as evidenced by the success of novels such as '50 Shades Of Grey' and others.

Rusty Blackwood, author of the romantic fiction novel 'Passions In Paris: Revelations Of A Lost Diary', believes that this trend will ultimately blur the lines between romantic fiction and erotica, and that movement will result in lowered standards for romantic fiction authors and lowered expectations for romantic fiction readers.

"Speaking from the standpoint of a romantic fiction writer, I really feel the need to take a stand on this issue and voice my opinion," stated Miss Blackwood. "The very comparison of these two genres makes about as much sense as comparing apples to onions in flavor.  I find the idea absurd. Furthermore it is totally misleading, especially when a title that is nothing more than pure erotica in genre is marketed and touted to be that of a good old fashioned love story, when in literary fact, is as far from a good old fashioned love story as one can get. Readers are always free to choose as they like, of course, but the damaging factor in this scenario is that the reading public has bought into this misconception, and have made the mistake of believing the likes of '50 Shades of Grey', as well as other titles written in the same vein, now the standard for romantic fiction. This is totally wrong, and it has done nothing but hurt the genre of romantic fiction, and those who write it."

In a review of '50 Shades Of Grey' by Frank Santo on the Daily News website, Santo stated that "the experience of reading E. L. James' '50 Shades of Grey' on the subway was enough to make me feel like a complete psychopath." While a review is but one person's opinion, this nevertheless begs the question - "What is romantic fiction really?"

"Romantic fiction is," continued Blackwood, "the creation of a world in print that sweeps the reader to a place that touches their heart, their soul, and totally absorbs them into the story they are reading. Real love is gentle, caring, passionate beyond the limit of imagination. It allows the reader to feel what the writer is hoping to share, and throughout the story allow them to experience whatever road they imagine they themselves and the one they love to travel. Love can also be hurtful, deceiving and heartbreaking, but it is not a place where a man plots to defile a woman, demeans her beyond all limit, and sends a message to all young women that this conduct and misuse is acceptable, and this is what real love is. This is why the comparison between these two genres is so unbelievably wrong, and needs to be clarified. The reading public should not be manipulated into believing otherwise, regardless of how much a title is hyped, and I hope for the sake of romantic fiction writers everywhere this will soon materialize."

Blackwood's romantic fiction novel, 'Passions In Paris', is a sweeping saga written in the tradition of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' and 'What Dreams May Come'. It has been compared to Erich Segal's 'Love Story' and Nicholas Sparks' 'The Notebook'. The novel has also received extremely positive reviews from Reader's Favorite reviewers and has a 4-star rating on Amazon. The book was chosen as a finalist in Indie Author Land’s “50 Self Published Books Worth Reading”. Rusty was also a finalist in The Authors Show “50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading” Awards.

"Passions In Paris" has received rave reviews from readers. Reader Fred Pifer stated the new romance book, "is a fascinating book of a love story that seemed to be written with me in mind. In the book 'Love Story' by Erich Segal, he told of a deep abiding love story that reminds me of Cullen and Joy’s in Ms. Blackwood’s book, but the twists of intrigue and mystery that she adds keeps the reader on edge throughout." Another said, "Passions in Paris I think stands it ground with these other powerful romantic stories like 'The Notebook' by Nicolas Sparks."

Readers can download the epub version of the book at Smashwords. 'Passions In Paris: Revelations Of A Lost Diary' is also available at Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions, Barnes and Noble in paperback and Nook editions, and Create Space.

Blackwood will appear at Seaway Mall Coles in Welland on on September 20th for a book signing event.

Christian Book Author SaBrowny Rae Releases New Novel, ‘Backdoor Tales: Lipstick - I, Judas’

Author SaBrowny Rae offers readers two completely unique stories, bundled as two books in one, in 'Backdoor Tales: Lipstick and I, Judas'

Author SaBrowny Rae has announced the release of the second installment in her 'Backdoor Tales' series. The new release is titled 'Backdoor Tales: Lipstick and I, Judas'. The new book is the follow-up to the first release in the series, 'Backdoor Tales: Tears Of The Serpent and September Love'.

Rae's works present a healthy dose of intrigue, mystery, religion, and murder. While Rae's books could be said to be Christian books as they present a number of Christian themes, it would be more appropriate to term them 'edgy' Christian.

In the storyline of the segment entitled 'Lipstick', an unwanted, unloved child is left orphaned by parents who never wanted her in the first place. She is taken in by strangers who want to sell her for illicit favors. Only she turns the tide on them and commits her first two murders. Once this is done, she becomes the person that she was created to be—Lipstick, a wealthy sociopathic murderer. She creates a new life for herself and discovers her true family.

In the storyline of the segment entitled 'I, Judas', the Christ killer is back, only this time he’s assigned to create a new race of nonhumans, ones that will destroy mankind for his master, Satan. He arrives to earth in the dead of the night and realizes that he’s no longer human but can only function as long as he has fresh blood as his source of life. A sadistic, bloodthirsty demonic killer remembers his sins against Christ and the love that he traded for thirty pieces of silver. He finds love again and cheats Satan and his assignment only to have a group of unlikely members form and attempt to send him back.

“I'm excited about this second book in the series,” SaBrowny stated. “I fell in love with Lipstick and wanted more of her. I felt that there should be more of her to come. Then as I focused on I, Judas I found myself being pulled into the hunt for the notorious Christ killer and wanted to bring him to justice as well. All I can say to my fans is to take a deep breath and get ready to endure the ride.”

SaBrowny Rae is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at sabrownyr@yahoo.com. Both 'Backdoor Tales' books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Xlibris in ebook, paperback and hardback. More information is available at SaBrowny's website at http://www.sabrownyraebooks.com

She has taken the written word and weaved a story that will keep readers wanting more using the same style of story-telling that allows readers to dig deep into theirimaginations and see the tale come to life. Her stories are based on romance, intrigue, mystery, religion, and murder.

Author A.W. Daniels Announces New Reviews For 'Genetically Privileged' and 'Genetically Conflicted'

Daniels has written two fiction novels that address the societal impacts of genetic engineering. While works of fiction, his critically acclaimed books explore a topic that many find wildly controversial

Author A. W. Daniels has announced new reviews for his widely praised novels about genetic engineering, 'Genetically Privileged' and 'Genetically Conflicted'. Both novels by Mr. Daniels address the social implications of genetic engineering.

Critics have praised 'Genetically Privileged', calling it "an insightful spin of science exploring genetic engineering" and "An inventive, intriguing novel."

An Amazon reviewer stated, "A well-rounded book of various themes, various well-developed characters, and medical technology that probably does exist. It is frightful to imagine such DNA enhancements, but what the mind can comprehend, it can bring into reality. Technology speeds by us, everyday. New gadgets, artificial intelligence, robots all really exist. So what about the Genetically Privileged? Must we accept and embrace them as our own? This Sci-Fi Thriller is so worth the read. I'm sure the technology exists for this type of experiment today. But whom would prove or disapprove the validity of the "super charged new race"? And what does fiction say to support those who live and trust in a perfect human being emerging from this not so perfect world? Genetically Privileged or genetically modified? Either way, this novel leaves much food for thought. I look forward to the sequel."

Another stated, "A taut and plausible SF Thriller, 'Genetically Privileged' is not only highly entertaining, but raises many questions in the process. The debut novel by author A. W. Daniels, there is undoubtedly tremendous scope for making moral commentary, but Daniels doesn’t allow this to influence pace, with a preference for maintaining tension and forward momentum throughout. The science, though radical, is already within the realms of possibility and the broader devices of science fiction will certainly be familiar to ardent fans of the genre, whilst the psychological elements bring warranted depth to a well-constructed plot. It’s certainly evocative at times, but Daniels isn’t one to wallow in extraneous detail. He sets out to tell a cracking good tale, but he wants his readers to trust their moral compass and leaves them pondering whether his fiction is nothing more than that, or the daunting spectre of reality in the making.
Intriguing, certainly, entertaining, definitely. A strong debut that raises expectations for future releases from A W Daniels, 'Genetically Privileged' is strongly recommended."

In regards to 'Genetically Conflicted, a recent review stated, "The sequel to A. W. Daniels' science fiction thriller 'Genetically Privileged',  'Genetically Conflicted' continues to demonstrate Daniel's narrative storytelling skills as he expands on his complexly woven world of the future. A solid entertainment from beginning to end, 'Genetically Conflicted' is very highly recommended reading for all science fiction enthusiasts."

An interview featuring A.W. Daniels is available at The Authors Show site at http://www.theauthorsshow.com. Daniels is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at aw.daniels@yahoo.com. Both books are available at Amazon, Smashwords and CreateSpace. More information is available at Daniels' website at http://www.AWDaniels.net.

About A. W. Daniels:

"Genetically Privileged" and"'Genetically Conflicted" are the first two offerings in a series of works by A. W. Daniels. The author's ability to craft compelling stories has been honed by extensive travel and observation of the human nature. This allows Mr. Daniels to weave a tapestry that colorfully, and sometimes bluntly, exposes the good and evil humankind inflicts on each other daily.

Selfies Can Be Dangerous: Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Author Of 'The Truth', Offers Guidelines

While selfies are a popular means of self expression today, Dr. Holstein believes one current trend holds real danger for teens and tweens. She offers guidance and an empowering alternative to help develop self-esteem and resiliency

A recent article by Douglas Quenqua on the New York Times site brought out a major issue that affects teens and tweens today. As noted in the article, we have always been forced to deal with the "Do you think I am pretty?" question. These days, that question is being asked in public by many young girls who post selfies and video on social media and video sharing sites. This practice can result in horrendous consequences for the teen, as related in the article. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and author of "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween", believes this practice can be dangerous.

"Girls, tweens and teens need ways to not ask others for validity around their looks or themselves," Dr. Holstein stated. "Using Selfies to ask the random public to comment on one's looks can be incredibly dangerous. Instead kids need to affirm and acknowledge for themselves what they feel proud about in themselves.  Selfies and selfie videos can be great for that if used correctly.  That is why I'm having a Selfie contest around the concept of 'I'm a Gutsy Tween'.  This contest encourages tweens to decide for themselves what makes them feel proud about themselves and then to take a picture of themselves either doing the special activity or holding a sign that tells us what makes the tween feel gutsy."

Teens and tweens age 9 to 15 are invited to submit selfies that celebrate a strong self image and resiliency. The contest is being held to coincide with the recent release of the newly revised and expanded edition of 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. Now published by Sky Pony Press, the new title is "The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween".

Selfies submitted should show the subject holding a placard say "I'm a gutsy tween because" or "I'm a gutsy teen because" with an accompanying statement detailing why. The contest is open until August 31, 2014. Dr. Holstein reserves the right to reject any picture or image that might be deemed offensive, contain inappropriate language or images, be misleading or for any other reason. All participants must prove they have parent or guardian permission to submit the photo. Winners will receive a signed copy of 'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween.' Contestant entries will be posted on Dr. Holstein's Facebook page with parent or guardian permission.

Dr. Holstein is also offering Creative performance workshops.  The first one took place on Thursday, July 31 at the While House on Monmouth Rd. in Oakhurst, New Jersey.  The tweens made Selfie posters about what makes them gutsy. Then they performed in videos based on story lines from 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween'.  What made the experience creative and unique for the tweens was that they got to act as the girl and her best friend Angela in scenes based on the book, but then they got to do improvisational work where they developed the characters and the solutions to their problems way beyond what is written in the diary.  This was an amazing experience for the tweens, helping them to recognize not only their acting abilities but abilities to create, solve problems and modify beyond the script given to them.  They left the Workshop feel empowered which is what being gutsy is all about.

A Facebook page, thetruthforgirls, highlights many of the topics woven into "The Truth".  Articles, videos, remarks, conversations, visuals, on this page center around many of the issues that tweens face growing up.  These include: self-esteem issues, quarreling in families, divorce, moving to a new home, a new school, best friends, a crush, bullies, a death in the family, money issues, not feeling pretty, feeling sad, feeling lonely, jealousy and more. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for positive psychology.

Her second book in The Truth Series is “Secrets: You Tell Me Yours and I’ll Tell You Mine…Maybe!”  Now the girl is 13. She handles many adolescent issues, including a crush, moving, a death in the family, feeling fat and problems with girlfriends.  'Secrets' provides a book kids and parents and grandparents can share and use as a sounding board for needed communication between the generations.

Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens in their lives. Both books will be re-released by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Holstein believes that getting in touch with one's strengths, talents and potential at every age, as well as learning how to hold on to the wise, playful, happy, gutsy and energetic girl that still resides within each woman is essential for mental health.

To assist this process she has written many books, including: case study material as presented in ‘The Enchanted Self, A Positive Therapy’; inspirational stories as presented in ‘Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU’ and romance, mystery books designed to bring fun, excitement, romance and positive psychological truths into women's lives.  Latest books are:  Parts 1 and 2 of ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’, available in paper and as e-books; Parts 1,2 and 3 of ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’ are now available, incorporated into ‘Around Every Corner’.

Selfies should be submitted to drbarbara@enchantedself.com.

Dr. Holstein is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. All of her works are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and all other online retailers. More information is available at her website at http://www.NewRomanceBooks.com. Pat Chalfant, Author Of 'Spirit Lights', Teaches Others How To Develop Mediumship Abilities

A recent piece in the New York Times on the passing of Kenny Kingston, psychic to the stars, quoted Kingston in a 2011 LA Times piece when he said ". . .there are not the psychics that there used to be." Pat Chalfant disagrees

"Psychic To The Stars" Kenny Kingston, died on June 30th at the age of 87. Kingston's fame as a psychic during the 1970's was unparalleled. He performed readings for many media stars, was a regular guest on some of the most popular television shows of the day and built a multimillion dollar business around his psychic abilities.  In response to a question about changes in the business by The Los Angeles Times in 2011 he replied, “You know, sweet spirit, there are not the psychics that there used to be.”

Pat Chalfant, author of “Spirit Lights a Path to Mediumship,” respectfully disagrees with Kenny Kingston’s 2011 comment that there aren’t the psychics there once were.  “Large  numbers of good mediums," Chalfant stated, "are coming out of classes like my Spirit Lights classes these days."

Chalfant, a CARE-certified medium, has written a column on parapsychology and interviewed Hollywood stars and the psychics who read for them for a national newspaper. She also occasionally attended Kingston's weekly meetings in Studio City, CA.

Chalfant's groundbreaking new book, 'Spirit Lights A Path To Mediumship', explains how a skeptic developed mediumship abilities and took her life down a path to a life transformed by the spiritual. She considers the book to be an "autobiographical textbook."

"For those who hope to develop mediumship, my book can help readers do that. And, because of the many amazing true stories in it, I predict readers will be entertained as well.”

Pat understands that mediumship is a controversial issue, but also believes that credible mediumship holds the promise of benefits for mankind that have not been fully explored.

“Often overlooked about the benefits of studying mediumship is that meditation is basic to its development," Chalfant stated. "So the mediumship student develops a path to relaxation and peace of mind which are inevitable outcomes of meditation.  For the same reason the student achieves greater powers of concentration.  A positive state of mind is stressed, too, for good, safe mediumship, so the student’s outlook becomes increasingly optimistic.  Students have also told me their self-confidence grew after studying mediumship.”

In addition to client consultations, Pat has penned the 'Spirit Lights Song Book'. She also does readings for clients by phone and teaches mediumship development classes. She has also created a DVD entitled 'Spirit Lights Psychic Development DVD'.

Pat Chalfant is currently appearing on The Authors Show. Her interview is available now at The Authors Show site. 'Spirit Lights A Path To Mediumship' is available at her website and at Amazon. Pat is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at pat.chalfant@patchalfant.com. More information is available at her website at http://www.patchalfant.com.

Oregon Spiritualist Medium Pat Chalfant's amazing psychic gifts have helped hundreds of individuals worldwide.
