Thanksgiving Day in the US can be experienced in many ways. For some, it is an opportunity to reflect on gratitude, unity and can remind one to express appreciation for the abundance for what life offers, fostering a sense of thankfulness for both tangible and intangible blessings. Obviously, Jane Austen did not celebrate Thanksgiving as we know it in the United States and in Canada. As every school child in the US knows (or should know), Thanksgiving in the United States has its origins in a feast that was held in 1621 by English Pilgrims and Native Americans to celebrate a successful harvest. The celebration is believed to have been in late November. The feast lasted for several days and was a communal celebration of the harvest, a way for the Pilgrims to express gratitude for their survival and for the help provided by the Native Americans.

In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday to occur on the last Thursday in November. In 1941, Congress officially established Thanksgiving as a legal holiday.

Canadian Thanksgiving has a different historical background and origin. In 1578, Martin Frobisher, an English explorer, celebrated a homecoming and thanksgiving ceremony in what is now Newfoundland as a gesture of gratitude for the safe return of his expedition who underwent many perils whilst seeking a Northwest Passage.

Over time, various regions in Canada held intermittent thanksgiving celebrations, but it wasn't until 1879 that Thanksgiving was established as a national holiday. Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII) from a serious illness.

She then addressed Harvest Festival, the UK day of giving thanks:

Harvest Festival, the popular UK day of giving thanks for the bounty of the earth dates back to pagan times when communities would give thanks for a successful harvest. The British practice as we know it, however, post-dates Jane Austen. Harvest Festival as it is known today has specifically Christian, even Anglican roots. The first recorded Harvest Festival church service took place in 1843 in Cornwall, England. The Reverend Robert Hawker invited his parishioners to a special thanksgiving service for the harvest at his church in Morwenstow as an alternative to the often-drunken celebrations that took place at the completion of a harvest.

Crow said in a recent interview, "I have loved celebrating American Thanksgiving all my life--family gatherings and church services were always special occasions. In my adult life I have greatly enjoyed participating in Harvest Festivals in the UK, in Canada, and in the US. When our daughter and her family moved to Canada, I then had the opportunity to experience Canadian Thanksgiving as well. Each one is a unique and very special event.

"None of these, however, is an occasion Jane Austen would have known, although their roots go deep into the past. The event she is most likely to have participated in is the Church of England observance of Rogation Days which occur in the spring to seek God's blessing on the crops and on the land in general.

"Few things in life are more important than giving thanks. No matter how difficult circumstances may seem at times we can always find something to be grateful for--and what better time to do it than at a time of national observance?"

Could artificial intelligence ever take the place of human authors?

AI has become the most talked-about, game-changing concept since the birth of the World Wide Web. Most of us fall somewhere between those two extreme points of view. Award-winning author Donna Fletcher Crow, however, has put AI to the test in a head-to-head, real-human-writer-versus-machine contest. And the results were surprising. She presented the results in a post on her website titled, "The AI Wars: ChatGPT vs. Bing, Which is better for a Creative Project?" In that post, she wrote in part:

Could this be of any value for the short story collection I was writing? I was clear on one thing: I would not turn to AI to write a story until I had written it myself, then I would see what the artificial creative “mind” could do. My project was writing a short story collection in the format of a travel memoir, using characters from my various mystery series as characters in stories set in places I visited on a trip to the Riviera and Switzerland in 2021.

The project took an inordinate amount of time. While I was plodding away at my tales, a whole new AI system burst on the world from Bing. The results sounded astounding. Better than anything before people said.

Now I hesitated. ChatGPT had been easy to work with and helpful for the questions I had asked it. Good at coming up with suggestions for names or research recommendations. But should I change? I am not an early adapter by nature; change of any kind isn’t easy for me. But one needs to keep up.

The Plan

I decided to give both systems an identical outline, based on a story I had already written for my collection. Then we would see the results.

Crow said, "This started out as an AI vs. AI competition in my mind, but it soon became a Woman vs. AI competition. Only the reader/viewer can be the final judge.”

The complete responses from both Bing and ChatGPT are posted on Crow's blog, plus a link to the YouTube video of herself reading her story "The Ghost Boy" fully illustrated with her own photos. All 3 results began with the same outline.

The state of Idaho recently unveiled the Spirit Of Idaho Women statue on the Idaho state capitol lawn. People love monuments for a variety of reasons. "But the fight was not won. Although the amendment passed nearly 2-1, the state board of canvassers did not ratify the result. Again, women leaders stepped forward, leading the charge to bring the case before the Idaho Supreme Court. The women prevailed. Idaho women were granted the right to vote in 1896, fourth state in the nation to do so, according to an article in the "Idaho Press" on Dec 13, 2022.

"At the unveiling, Idaho’s First Lady Teresa Little said that the sculpture commemorates Idaho women’s suffrage and recognizes the contributions of women past, present and future. Kathryn, Elizabeth and Stephanie, heroines of the 'Daughters of Courage' family saga, depict just such women."

“Like all avid Janeites, I had been interested over the years in newly-discovered portraits declared by some to be of Jane Austen. I had never considered taking a position in the on-going debates, however, until my granddaughter and I found ourselves ‘living’ two of the most prominent representations.

“The experience of portraying the portraits was much like getting inside a character I’m developing for a novel, whether an historic or fictional person. It’s all based on meticulous research and careful observation of the smallest details until, slowly, one comes to realize you know what that person thinks, what they would do or say.

“It was the same for me with the Byrne and Rice portraits I experienced in preparing for my presentation for the Jane Austen Society of North America conference in Victoria, BC. Hours spent scrutinizing every detail of the portraits and every known description of Austen led me to a firm position and to feeling like I know the beloved author better. Jane Austen Would Celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee Says Bestselling Author Donna Fletcher Crow

Jane Austen is of singular interest to bestselling author Donna Fletcher Crow. She has written a number of books that tie into Austen and her life. The supreme wickedness being the execution of Mary Queen of Scots."

Yet Crow believes Jane Austen would have approved of Queen Elizabeth II, and would have likely enjoyed celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, as she enjoyed Queen Charlotte's birthday in 1809.

When the Jane Austen Society of North America held their annual Box Hill picnic, Crow's contribution was the Jubilee Trifle in honor of Jane Austen and Queen Elizabeth II

Crow said in a recent interview, “It was a great delight to be in London during the recent Jubilee Celebrations. We were able to attend several special events honoring Queen Elizabeth’s record-breaking 70-year reign. As a special quiet moment amid all the hoopla my husband and I had a lovely afternoon tea in our hotel, where the signature piece of the celebration, Jubilee Trifle, was served.

“I couldn’t wait to share the dish and the experience with my fellow Janeites when we returned home, and then, through my blog, to give my readers the opportunity to replicate the fun. I am pleased as well to have been able to simplify and translate the complications of the elaborate dish for Americans.”

In preparation for the Jane Austen Society of North America’s annual meeting this September in Victoria BC, Crow is busy preparing her talk “In London with Jane Austen and the Dashwoods” which she will present in the persona of Jane Austen. “Austen” will explain the meaning of the London locations she uses in her novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and show how understanding these sites gives the reader a deeper insight into her characters.

The NFPW National Communications Contest is a nation-wide, two-tiered contest open to all writers. First-place winners from state-level contests are then moved to the national level of judging.

In preparation for the Jane Austen Society of North America’s annual meeting this September in Victoria BC, Crow is busy preparing her talk “In London with Jane Austen and the Dashwoods” which she will present in the persona of Jane Austen. “Austen” will explain the meaning of the London locations she uses in her novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and show how understanding these sites gives the reader a deeper insight into her characters.
