So it is with life,’ admonishing us ‘to choose the right beginning.”’

“I wrote this book as a reaction to reports and pictures of that time that I saw: Glamorous portrayals in German magazines of the postwar years,” Haggblade stated. “More importantly, I wanted to respond to positive comments I kept hearing from Americans about their understanding of the postwar years. Both impressions were in contrast to my experience growing up and those I came in contact with. They told only one side of the story.

“On a personal level, I wanted to bring the reader into the picture: How life had to go on, war or no war. I let the rooms and the furniture be witnesses to our family’s daily struggle.

“By looking back, we learn how Germany has reckoned with its past. We can trace the changes the country has undergone and what it has become politically, sociologically, and economically on account of its size and influence in Europe and in the world today. In a recent talk for the AAUW book club members in Santa Barbara, CA, she described in detail some of the challenges faced during that time.

“One had to make an effort to establish a routine, to bring some kind of order into one’s life. What was it like to get up in the morning, trying to find soap, comb, toothbrush, warm water–not a small task in those times.

“We had to find food and ways to cook it.

“One still had to go to school, without public or private transportation, in all seasons. Find a place to do homework. Find proper clothes and shoes to wear; gear for rain, clothes for winter; Find thread for mending clothes. And we had to deal with sickness and death in the family.

“All the while, people still had to suffer the usual annoying indignities of adolescence, middle age crises, old age problems.”

In short, 'Trauterose' is the account of one person's search for humanity in existence—a cautionary tale on the inherited guilt created by rampant nationalism, and a painfully honest and often humorous view of the world through the eyes of a young woman who found her way to freedom and purpose.

Did Jane Austen Celebrate Thanksgiving? The Answer Might Be Surprising Says Bestselling Author Donna Fletcher Crow

Thanksgiving Day in the US can be experienced in many ways. For some, it is an opportunity to reflect on gratitude, unity and can remind one to express appreciation for the abundance for what life offers, fostering a sense of thankfulness for both tangible and intangible blessings. It can also be an occasion to gather with loved ones, reinforcing the importance of family and community bonds. Beyond its historical roots, it can promote a spirit of generosity and compassion. But does that happen only in the US? Donna Fletcher Crow recently posted an article on her website in which she delved deeply into the history of Thanksgiving in the UK, US and Canada, and answers the question "Did Jane Austen celebrate Thanksgiving?" In that article, she said in part:

Obviously, Jane Austen did not celebrate Thanksgiving as we know it in the United States and in Canada. As every school child in the US knows (or should know), Thanksgiving in the United States has its origins in a feast that was held in 1621 by English Pilgrims and Native Americans to celebrate a successful harvest. The celebration is believed to have been in late November. The feast lasted for several days and was a communal celebration of the harvest, a way for the Pilgrims to express gratitude for their survival and for the help provided by the Native Americans.

In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday to occur on the last Thursday in November. In 1941, Congress officially established Thanksgiving as a legal holiday.

Canadian Thanksgiving has a different historical background and origin. In 1578, Martin Frobisher, an English explorer, celebrated a homecoming and thanksgiving ceremony in what is now Newfoundland as a gesture of gratitude for the safe return of his expedition who underwent many perils whilst seeking a Northwest Passage.

Over time, various regions in Canada held intermittent thanksgiving celebrations, but it wasn't until 1879 that Thanksgiving was established as a national holiday. Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII) from a serious illness.

She then addressed Harvest Festival, the UK day of giving thanks:

Harvest Festival, the popular UK day of giving thanks for the bounty of the earth dates back to pagan times when communities would give thanks for a successful harvest. The British practice as we know it, however, post-dates Jane Austen. Harvest Festival as it is known today has specifically Christian, even Anglican roots. The first recorded Harvest Festival church service took place in 1843 in Cornwall, England. The Reverend Robert Hawker invited his parishioners to a special thanksgiving service for the harvest at his church in Morwenstow as an alternative to the often-drunken celebrations that took place at the completion of a harvest.

Crow said in a recent interview, "I have loved celebrating American Thanksgiving all my life--family gatherings and church services were always special occasions. In my adult life I have greatly enjoyed participating in Harvest Festivals in the UK, in Canada, and in the US. When our daughter and her family moved to Canada, I then had the opportunity to experience Canadian Thanksgiving as well. Each one is a unique and very special event.

"None of these, however, is an occasion Jane Austen would have known, although their roots go deep into the past. The event she is most likely to have participated in is the Church of England observance of Rogation Days which occur in the spring to seek God's blessing on the crops and on the land in general.

"Few things in life are more important than giving thanks. No matter how difficult circumstances may seem at times we can always find something to be grateful for--and what better time to do it than at a time of national observance?"

Could artificial intelligence ever take the place of human authors?

AI has become the most talked-about, game-changing concept since the birth of the World Wide Web. To some, AI emerges as humanity's potential savior—a never-erring guiding light that promises to unveil solutions to the most formidable human threats, from the specter of climate change to the onslaught of modern-day pandemics. For believers, the age-old struggles of human cooperation and resource management seem trivial, with the prospect of entrusting AI to oversee all facets of existence.

Conversely, for a different group of naysayers, AI serves as a perilous gateway to our own undoing. Job security becomes an antiquated concept, jobs themselves vanishing into the void as AI takes the reins. The very essence of choice, be it moral, ethical, or otherwise, is cast into doubt. In a plot reminiscent of a dubious 1980s B-movie, we find ourselves on the brink of annihilation, ensnared by the very monster we birthed into existence.

Most of us fall somewhere between those two extreme points of view. Award-winning author Donna Fletcher Crow, however, has put AI to the test in a head-to-head, real-human-writer-versus-machine contest. And the results were surprising. She presented the results in a post on her website titled, "The AI Wars: ChatGPT vs. Bing, Which is better for a Creative Project?" In that post, she wrote in part:

Could this be of any value for the short story collection I was writing? I was clear on one thing: I would not turn to AI to write a story until I had written it myself, then I would see what the artificial creative “mind” could do. My project was writing a short story collection in the format of a travel memoir, using characters from my various mystery series as characters in stories set in places I visited on a trip to the Riviera and Switzerland in 2021.

The project took an inordinate amount of time. While I was plodding away at my tales, a whole new AI system burst on the world from Bing. The results sounded astounding. Better than anything before people said.

Now I hesitated. ChatGPT had been easy to work with and helpful for the questions I had asked it. Good at coming up with suggestions for names or research recommendations. But should I change? I am not an early adapter by nature; change of any kind isn’t easy for me. But one needs to keep up.

The Plan

I decided to give both systems an identical outline, based on a story I had already written for my collection. Then we would see the results.

Crow said, "This started out as an AI vs. AI competition in my mind, but it soon became a Woman vs. AI competition. Only the reader/viewer can be the final judge.”

She said that it would be coming out “next year” and I responded that I looked forward to reading the book and interviewing her again when that happened.

“As a passionate Jane Austen scholar, I am interested in all aspects of life in the 18th century. I was certain that the life of this previously unknown real-life heroine would add important insights into the life of a woman of that time. Not only is Kishanda’s subject her husband’s forebearer, but also Kishanda is a former journalist and a Janeite herself—no one could be better placed to undertake this project.

“The vicissitudes of the publishing world being what they are, it’s not surprising that the completed project took considerably longer, but it was well worth waiting for. And, once again, Kishanda was gracious and generous in her interview. Knowing what a busy lady she is as a mother of 4, wife of controversial media figure Francis Fulford, and chatelaine of Great Fulford, one of the principal country manors of England, I only requested her press kit when I finally heard of the book’s release.
