Real Health Symposium, Focusing On Chronic Illness And Caregivers, To Be Held In Toronto On October 28th, 2017
Cecile Gough is very pleased to announce that the 2017 Real Health Symposium will be held at the Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, Ontario on October 28, 2017, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The mission of this event is to educate, raise awareness, create community and provide support and resources for those living with chronic illness as well as their caregivers and loved ones. This event will feature a number of speakers including: Dr. Rick Sponaugle; Dr. Robert Banner, Katina Makris, homeopath; and Cecile Gough, patient advocate.
“I have created the conference I would most like to go to as a patient,” said Cecile Gough, a former oncology nurse who has become a patient advocate for those who are experiencing similar heath challenges. For more than a decade she slipped through the cracks of the health care system in Canada until she was finally diagnosed with Late Stage Chronic Lyme Disease in 2014. Unable to receive the appropriate care at home in Canada, Gough travelled to the Sponaugle Wellness Centre in Tampa Bay, Florida, for treatment in 2016. When asked about the care she received in Florida, you will often hear her say “Doc [Dr. Sponaugle] gave me my life back.”
While struggling to find her way through the Canadian medical system she became determined to aid others who have suffered and who are suffering like her. “While trying to get the care I realized I needed to do more to help others who were facing the same up-hill battle to get real health,” said Gough. The result of that desire is the Real Health Symposium.
The day-long event will provide support and resources for those who suffer from autoimmune issues, Lyme Disease, mental illness, mold or industrial toxicity, all while raising funds for respected non-profit organizations in the community. Working with world-class experts whose lives have been touched by chronic illness, Gough believes in offering a holistic perspective of health through the Real Health Symposium.
To that end, she is bringing together the following keynote speakers:
Rick Sponaugle, M.D., is an Integrative Medicine physician who specializes in environmental medicine, tick-borne infections, and treating brain disorders. Having personally lived with mold toxicity and helping his daughter recover from Lyme disease, these experiences created the practice he has today in Florida;
Robert Banner, M.D., President of the Ontario Society of Physicians for Complementary Medicine, began his medical career as a Flight Surgeon and Diving Medical Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. Professional and personal reasons led Dr. Banner to a more holistic view to the practice of Functional Medicine. An Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Banner currently sees patients in his clinic in London, Ontario;
A graduate of Duke University and the Stillpoint School of Integrative Life Healing, Katina Makris is a seasoned Classical Homeopath and Certified Intuitive Healer. She is an award-winning author of two books that share her ten-year triumphant journey of healing from Advanced Chronic Lyme disease. Writing a popular health column for a decade, along with hosting the breakthrough "Lyme Light Radio Show," Makris has a loyal and dedicated following across North America and Europe; and
For Cecile Gough, the journey towards healing has been long and challenging, yet she remains determined to take all that she has learned to help others. A popular and dynamic speaker and writer, she has been featured in national and international media to discuss the crisis of Lyme disease in Canada. Working with politicians to improve health at all levels of government, Gough has presented twice before members of the Canadian House of Commons in Ottawa. As the creator and producer of the Real Health Symposium, it is her life passion to help people get the answers and care that they need, while guiding them to become their own advocates in their journey back to health.
The Real Health Symposium proudly supports the Canadian Celiac Association and the G. Magnotta Foundation.
The Real Health Symposium has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Sponaugle Wellness Institute; Health Harmonies; IgeneX Inc.; The Big Carrot; and Terry Natural Canada.

Lyme Disease Expert Katina Makris Announces New Book Release, 'Auto-Immune Illness And Lyme Disease Recovery Guide'
Author and Lyme Disease expert Katina Makris has announced the release of her latest book,'Auto-Immune Illness And Lyme Disease Recovery Guide'. The new book provides current information and tools for optimizing wellness and mending from autoimmune illness and Lyme disease, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and other types of autoimmune disorders.
The occurrence of autoimmune illnesses has spiked dramatically over the last forty years. MS, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia are plaguing people worldwide. The dependency on medication and the amount of physician care involved are overwhelming the health-care system. Most disturbing is that people do not necessarily heal from diseases like lupus or chronic fatigue syndrome — they merely manage their disability. 'Autoimmune Illness And Lyme Disease Recovery Guide' is both a manual and a workbook. It educates readers on the role of Integrative Medicine and dietary and lifestyle management for optimizing recovery potentials, as well as how to ignite the mind-body healing pathway.
"The emphasis of this new book is to help empower the reader to take hold of their own healing and well-being, by coming to understand the fundamental underlying issues at play that make some of us susceptible to autoimmune illnesses and the rampant explosion of the Lyme disease epidemic," Makris stated. "This book is a recovery guide, sharing salient measures involving what causes systemic inflammation and the autoimmune relay trigger to be tripped. The intricate pieces of deficiencies, microbial infections, toxic exposure, and our food chain are examined, as well as how Integrative Medicine is the powerful new player in mending from chronic disease versus just symptom management. Understanding the interplay between mind-body-spirit brings the reader invaluable tools to work on at home."
Katina Makris’ personal experience of near death and catastrophic loss due to long term misdiagnosed Lyme disease, coupled with her professional experience as a Certified Classical Homeopath and Certified Spiritual Healer, give her enormous depth and hard earned wisdom. Even caretakers and healthy individuals benefit from Katina’s pivotal work and message of inspiration. Katina has worked in natural health care for 30 years. A veteran, popular newspaper health columnist, award winning author of 'Out of the Woods, Healing Lyme Disease, Body, Mind & Spirit' and former board member of The Council for Homeopathic Certification, Katina is currently the keynote speaker for the acclaimed 'Ticked OFF Music Fest' Lyme awareness and fundraising series, as well as host of the hit weekly talk show 'Lyme Light Radio with Katina' on the famed The Dr Pat Show syndicate, with a global listening audience in the multi-millions.
Readers have given the book rave reviews. One reader stated, "After being ill to the point of bedridden for over three years, I have read every book on the shelves related to autoimmune and lyme disease recovery, and this one is by far the best I've ever read. Everything you wanted to know in one accessible, beautiful, incredibly engaging book." Another said "Absolutely a wealth of information. Katina's books have been a critical part of my Lyme journey."
German translation rights to the book were purchased by Aquamarin- Verlag with a Spring 2016 release.
Katina Makris is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at jennifer@moonglowpr.com. Author Katina Makris To Speak At National Lyme Disease Rally On May 25th, 2013 In Washington DC
Author, speaker, Homeopath and Lyme recoveree Katina Makris will appear at the National Lyme Disease Rally to be held in Washington DC on May 25th, 2013. The title of her presentation is “Mending the Emotional And Spiritual Wounds of Lyme Disease”.
As in the past, the MAYDAY Rally’s focus will be to promote awareness of Lyme Disease, to continue to build camaraderie within the ever-growing community, and to encourage elected officials and insurance companies to take action.
"The Lyme Disease Rally," Makris stated, "has a lineup of doctors, lawyers, authors and advocates speaking out, to usher in Lyme disease awareness, better doctor education, improved diagnostics and to urge the government to expand prevention measures as well as initiate more thorough medical insurance coverage regarding this surging epidemic, which has now surpassed HIV as fastest spreading infectious illness in USA. All states contain Lyme infected ticks. All varieties of ticks can carry the bacteria. The CDC labeled it as a short-term infectious illness in late 1970s. We have learned the hard way- 35 years later - that if not diagnosed and treated promptly and aggressively in the early weeks of a new infection, Lyme disease can cause life altering illness and damage to the body and mind.”
A full slate of presenters will appear on May 25. These include, but are not limited to:
Monte Skall, Executive Director, National Capital Lyme Disease Association - Patient Advocacy
Susan Green, Attorney, Baltimore, MD - Patient Advocacy
Samuel Shor, MD, FACP, Reston, VA - Scientific Advancements
David Stewart, MD, Board Certified in Family Medicine and Holistic Medicine
Jaime Bloom, Patient Advocate - The Impact of Lyme on the Elderly
Alyssa Knapp, Lyme Survivor - Life after Lyme
With tens of thousands of cases of Lyme contracted annually and thousands more undiagnosed or mistreated, Lyme disease is leaving masses of people in progressive states of illness, collapse and financial ruin. Assorted conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, Fibromyalgia, even dementia could be misdiagnosed Lyme.
Makris is no stranger to Lyme, being a survivor of the disease. Her book, “Out Of The Woods”, is the captivating story of her carefully cultivated life unraveling from a misdiagnosed case of Lyme disease. At the peak of her career, with a young family happily ensconced in rural New England, a mysterious ‘flu’ ransacked Katina’s life and future with unsuspecting consequences. Her ten-year journey, two completely bedridden, out of darkness into the light of living is one of profound lessons and unexpected discoveries.
A healing passage of transformational personal change and ultimately one of unheralded spiritual awakening, “Out of The Woods” stretches across the borders of any one illness to all whom are grappling with the uncertainties and seismic quakes of chronic illness. Tending to the emotional and spiritual wounds of Lyme disease is just as critical as killing the bacterial invasion. “Out of The Woods” offers guidance and suggestions of how to heal at these levels, as not everyone knows how to mend a broken spirit. It is an inspirational healing story of rebirth and the power of hope.
The rally will take place on May 25, 2013 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm EST at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC.

Author Katina Makris Encourages Release Of Delayed Massachusetts Lyme Disease Commission Report
The Massachusetts Lyme Disease Commission was created by the Massachusetts State Legislature in April of 2011. The Lyme Disease Commission's charge was to develop a report to help combat Lyme Disease, including options in regards to screening programs, the improvement of preventative measures and to explore the value of public health screening measures. The release of the report has been delayed as the result of numerous technical issues. Makris believes it is imperative that Massachusetts and other affected states take action as soon as possible.
“The Lyme disease situation in Massachusetts is yet another red ‘dashboard’ light screaming for action alert regarding this exploding infectious illness. Many medical authorities consider Lyme disease to be the polio of the twenty first century, as it has now surpassed HIV in how quickly it is spreading” says Katina Makris, Lyme survivor and author of “Out of The Woods; Healing Lyme Disease, Body, Mind & Spirit”.
Massachusetts is a severely affected state, but so are over a couple dozen more. Lyme disease is showing up all over the US actually, with migratory birds transporting Lyme infected ticks everywhere; Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Montana included.
“Massachusetts advocates are urging for the correct measures, which all states should adopt - school prevention steps, doctor diagnostic training and funds for Lyme Disease treatment research,” Makris agrees.
The lyme causing spirochete bacteria, borrelia burgdorferi is a cousin to syphilis, burrowing from bloodstream, to tissues and joints, to spinal fluid and the brain. “We know the ugly affects of advanced syphilis. Lyme is very similar.”
As Dr. Leo Shea III, International Lyme and Infectious Disease Society president states, “we watched too many thousands die when the medical community did not take HIV seriously. We cannot afford to lose another generation to Lyme disease.”
“The sooner Massachusetts and other states adopt Lyme disease awareness, prevention, diagnostic and adequate early treatment protocols, the better chance we have to arrest the epidemic.”
With tens of thousands of cases of Lyme contracted annually and thousands more undiagnosed or mistreated, Lyme disease is leaving masses of people in progressive states of illness, collapse and financial ruin. Assorted conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, Fibromyalgia, even Parkinson's could be misdiagnosed Lyme.
