Dr. Holstein believes building self esteem is of the highest priority today for girls, tweens and teens. She now offers two free ebook samplers from two of her best selling books, 'The Truth' and 'Secrets'
Books for girls, tweens and teens can be found everywhere. Only a few offer ways to help kids build self esteem. Even fewer are based in real world scenarios. And fewer still are written by a Positive Psychologist. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein now offers free ebook samplers from two of her most popular books - 'The Truth, I'm A Girl, I'm Smart And I Know Everything' and 'Secrets, You Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine - Maybe'.
Both books are written from the perspective of a young girl and take the form of diary entries. Any parent or teacher can start a great discussion about the issues brought up by the situations in either book: a first crush, her emotions and longings, growing up, parents fighting, school anxieties, problems with best friends, bullying, fear of moving to a new town, sibling rivalry, anxiety about illness, how to navigate growing up and many more.
Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, one of the originators of Positive Psychology for women and girls, has been a pioneer in the field of positive psychology with her fictional diary format. Both fiction books are intentionally embedded with positive psychology concepts on almost every page. They read easily as a diary, yet are loaded with the best of positive psychology principles. Embedded in the girl's diary pages are such concepts as: hope, resiliency, courage, perseverance, loving kindness, cognitive flexibility, problem solving skills, recognition of one's strengths, talents and potential, adaptive skills and more.
"Research validates what we psychologists and educators already know about girls," Dr. Holstein stated. "They often stop trying as hard in school around 10 or 11 and begin to experience many self-esteem issues that may lead to all sorts of problems, from deteriorating academic success to eating disorders, various types of conduct disorders and/or depression. If these risk factors are combined with other social issues like being bullied, we can begin to see how dangerous these years can be. One way to help girls grow up successfully is through books that encourage them to feel strong, resilient, hopeful and sure of themselves. Once a girl feels strong and hopeful she is on the way to maintaining the skills she needs emotionally and intellectually to succeed."
"These books fill a void in communicating. Both 'The Truth' and 'Secrets' can help parents, grandparents and educators initiate conversations about issues that impact children, grandchildren and students. And they also give kids, tweens and teens the courage they need to initiate long overdo family conversations and sharing of feelings, thoughts and creative solutions to everyday issues."
Dr. Holstein is making free ebook samples from both books available at www.payhip.com/drbholstein. Both books are available in Kindle and epub formats. Dr. Holstein can be contacted by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. All of her works are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and all other online retailers. Selfies, Stageplays And Books - Dr Barbara Becker Holstein Announces Staged Performance Of 'The Locket' In Manhattan On May 20, 2015
Directed by Bob Angelini, the cast includes Ashley Griffin, Cassidy Terracciano, Shereen Hickman and Chris Kateff
What do selfies, stageplays and books have in common? They each freeze a moment in time and give us a glimpse into the lives of other human beings. Regardless of direction or motive, each of them, in their own way, can provide hope, growth, motivation or perhaps just entertainment. In her work as a Positive Psychologist, Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein employs all of them as teaching tools. She helps teens and tweens develop a positive self image through her books, produces professional videos on subjects (such as selfies) that are important to this age group and, if all that is not enough, has a play in production.
The play reading, titled 'The Locket', will be presented May 20, 2015 in Manhattan. The reading will be directed by Bob Angelini. Some of Bob's directing credits include: NYC: Murrow, (Dramatists Guild, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble), Fourth State of Matter (Theater/New City), The Diary of Anne Frank (Alexrod PAC and Murrow (Theatre Project). Bob is a member of the Actor's Equity Association, The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, SAG/AFTRA and the NY Shakespeare Society. He is currently the interim Artistic Director of ReVision Theatre in Asbury Park, N. J.
The cast includes:
* Ashley Griffin as the Woman - ( Most well known as the creator of the pop culture phenomenon "Forever Deadward," Ashley has performed on and off Broadway as well as in L.A., Chicago, and the UK. She is currently playing Rosalind in A.N.O.N Productions "As You Like It" in NYC, and will be performing in concert at 54 Below June 13th.
* Cassidy Terracciano as the Girl - (Cassidy has played Elle Woods in 'Legally Blonde', Sally Smith in 'Me and My Girl'. and Anne Frank in 'The Diary of Anne Frank').
* Shereen Hickman as the Fairy Godmother - (Shereen is known for her work with Cirque du Soleil as the female clown in three of Cirques productions).
* Chris Kateff as the Husband and Narrator - (Chris recently played in 'Every Christmas Story Ever Told - And Then Some').
'The Locket' is the story of a woman, caught in a marital struggle and a loss of her sense of self. She is awakened by a unexpected connection to her girlhood self after finding her diary and her a special locket with a secret, all enhanced by meeting up with a Fairy Godmother. Magic, romance, wisdom, hope and the realization that it is always best to be true to your self become clear messages in 'The Locket'.
"From Shakespeare to 'The Locket', the best plays are very much like selfies," Dr Holstein stated. "A good Shakespearean play has within it the kernels of personality and dilemma that exist for almost everyone. Likewise, 'The Locket' has within it so many of the dilemmas and issues that girls and then girls as women face. Selfies are popular because we all like to record and share our lives. We need to feel unique and special and yet at the same time share our human condition. The selfie is the easiest way that has come along. A good selfie restores our sense of self and well-being as we laugh, share and/or cry over the pictures we are sending and/or collecting. Selfies are the stories of our lives: our travels, babies, college days, marriages, friendship, retirement, bereavement, renewal. And so is a good play. It uplifts us, brings us to tears, fills us with enthusiasm and hope, gives us courage to go on and reminds us again and again that we are unique and yet our we are at the same time, in some way, one with everyone else. I hope 'The Locket' takes the audience to all of those places. And it is comforting to come home to the truth that kids really do have a lot of wisdom and understanding about the world. In 'The Locket', the magical drama of the theatre brings us closer to the old magic of childhood that we all once understood and were part of, while drawing us into the real dramas that adults face and have to still resolve, one day at a time."
This is the third stage reading of The Truth, the first two took place in Asbury Park, New Jersey to rave reviews. Comments included:
" Wonderful depiction of a young girl's journey through adolescence."
"This play helps adults understand how children feel. For example, how much they are hurt by parents fighting."
"The Locket identifies with tweens and teens and the issues they face."
"A very entertaining journey a woman takes from perceived crisis to self-awareness to empowerment through re-living her past."
"An unusual yet needed attempt at describing the development of young girls to adulthood that is rarely considered."
"The Locket is a compelling snapshot of the story of an everyday woman's life."
"The Locket is a warm reminder to girls and women to honor the truths in their hearts."
"The play is a great reminder of who we are and why we think and behave the way we do."
'The Locket', will be presented May 20, 2015 at 6:30 PM, in Manhattan. If you would like an invitation contact us at: 732-925-2269 or barbara.holstein@gmail.com. #LikeAGirl - Positive Psychologist And Author Barbara Becker Holstein Release 'Secrets - Diary Of A Gutsy Teen', Book That Builds Self Esteem For Teen Girls
'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen' is written to offset the problem of the loss of self-esteem and confidence and resiliency that happens around and after puberty
The Always Super Bowl commercial, designated with the hashtag #LikeAGirl has created massive public awareness around the issue of the loss of self-esteem experienced by teenage girls. The timing is fortuitous, as it comes during the week of Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein's latest book release about building self-esteem for teenage girls, 'Secrets, Diary Of A Gutsy Teen'.
"They say that timing is everything," Dr. Holstein stated. "I was happy to see Always release their Super Bowl commercial this weekend, as their message creates real awareness around the teen self-esteem issue. The release of 'Secrets', written to help teen girls develops self-esteem, happens this week also."
"Psychologists and educators have known for years that girls' confidence falls after puberty. But it took Always to have the guts and the money to sponsor an ad on Super Bowl Sunday that was so moving that as one commentator said, 'Anyone with a daughter can't help but get chills during the commercial.'"
"Why did I write 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen'? To offset the problem of the loss of self-esteem, confidence and resiliency that happens around and after puberty. Girls lose their enthusiasm about their own talents and potential as they navigate the teens. That often leads to girls responding to peer pressures in ways that lead to disastrous results, whether it is anoxia, drugs or early pregnancy, etc. One way to offset these negative results is via role models. The girl in 'Secrets' is a role model. She keeps a diary that is full of the normal angst of growing up, but she has guts, courage and a healthy dose of #Girl Power. She figures things out, recovers from emotional blows and always 'runs like a girl'. That means she is strong, resilient and successful."
To celebrate the release of 'Secrets', Dr. Holstein will offer no-charge copies of the book to the first 10 parents who contact her via email. Why?
"Because the girl in 'Secrets'" Holstein concluded, "is holding on to her confidence and resiliency through all of events and feelings she must face, the same ones we faced, during our teenage years. She is a great role model in the same manner as the 10 year olds in #Like a Girl. We must not let our girls lose their confidence as they go through puberty."
Dr. Holstein also recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.
A Facebook page, thetruthforgirls, highlights many of the topics woven into "The Truth". Articles, videos, remarks, conversations, visuals, on this page center around many of the issues that tweens face growing up. These include: self-esteem issues, quarreling in families, divorce, moving to a new home, a new school, best friends, a crush, bullies, a death in the family, money issues, not feeling pretty, feeling sad, feeling lonely, jealousy and more. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for embedding positive psychology concepts.
Her second book in The Truth Series is “Secrets: Diary Of A Gutsy Teen”. In 'Secrets' the girl is 13 years old. She handles many adolescent issues, including a crush, moving, a death in the family, feeling fat and problems with girlfriends. 'Secrets' provides a book kids and parents and grandparents can share and use as a sounding board for needed communication between the generations.
Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives. Both books are being re-released by Sky Pony Press.
Dr. Holstein is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. All of her works are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and all other online retailers. More information is available at her website at http://www.TheTruthForGirls.com.
