How To Talk To Your Kids About Bullying On Social Media - Advice Offered By Psychologist And Award Winning Selfie Film Maker Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Holstein, a psychologist/filmmaker and originator of a unique Selfie Film concept, writes award-winning books, plays and produces short films. The newest, ‘Conflict’, makes vivid problems that impact today's teens and tweens.

Bullying has always been a problem for kids. In the past, children who were bullied dreaded going to school and looked forward to a respite after arriving home at the end of the school day. Today however, as the result of social media, bullying can go on around the clock. Most adults cannot even begin to imagine the stress and pressure modern-day bullying produces.  We may laugh and enjoy the antics of Tina Fey's 'Mean Girls' on the stage, but for teens living with bullying everyday it can be treacherous. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, psychologist and award winning selfie film maker offers some down to earth advice regarding how to talk to your children about bullying and social media.

"Bullying is a serious situation," Dr. Holstein stated. "Although we all have suffered some degree of bullying growing up, most parents are finding that when their child is bullied it is far more serious and potentially hurtful than what happened to them. Whether it is the extreme of a child trying to take his own life after being bullied or a case of a cell phone tucked in her bed to check social media during the night to see what new negative remarks have been made about her, there are an abundance of upsetting bullying situations going on.  A potential suicide or an actual suicide is beyond devastating and a loss of human life because of bullying should never happen.  Lack of sleep may be made up, but the feelings of insecurity and hurt can last a lifetime.

"As a psychologist-filmmaker, I am always looking at ways to help parents raise their children and at the same time looking at ways to build a youngster's sense of self worth and recognition of her talents and potential. Boys and girls are not exactly the same to raise, as anyone raising kids can attest to. Girls start to lose self-confidence around 4th or 5th grade and boys often become more daring. Either stance can be a potential safety hazard in terms of development. To add bullying and social media into the mix is close to an explosive recipe. Here are some down to earth suggestions regarding how to handle bullying and social media with your children:

"Monitor your child's involvement with social media.  Bullying that happens on-line may be kept from you, if you have not created a clear stance that allows you to know what is happening on the sites your child visits.  Remember, you are the parent and/or the legal guardian.  You have a right to set time limits and to be allowed to see what is going on.

"Given the above, let's be realistic.  Kids are good a hiding from parents what they are really doing and what is happening to them.  So here are tips to keep the channels open:

"Share often what happened to you growing up.  Any stories out of your past where maybe you were ashamed, humiliated, put down, or on the upside, put a bully in his place, etc. are great.  They make you more than a parent.  They make you human and someone your child may dare to open up to and tell the truth.

"Watch your child's behaviors.  If they suddenly change, for example he will no longer eat at the table with the family, his door is closed all the time and he looks bedraggled, don't wait for him to share what is happening.  Try to take some time to chat with him.  Punishing for not coming to the table or locking a bedroom door will not be as helpful in the long run as sharing your concern, giving a hug and letting him know you are always there for him.

"If she tells you about a bully or bullying stay alert.  Ask her if she wishes you to come to school and talk to the principal or guidance counselor.  She may say no, but again, you are the parent, you can make clear that you will have to make the final judgement on the situation.

"Unfortunately, she may not tell you anything. Remember, Any real change in behavior NOT to the good you should always take notice. For example if you see a drop in grades, or all of a sudden your child has begun to look sad all the time, she is easily irritated are all possible signs that she is a victim of teasing, gossip or bullying. If she is sleeping with her phone, turning it off quickly as you come by, not happy to show you her social media sites, she may be dealing with kids ganging up on her or some form of ostracizing.

"The best advice I can give you is really listen to your child. Put your own phone down, stop texting, checking social media, etc. when your child is around. Stay involved in his or her life. Do activities together, from family picnics to telling jokes.  Be available as much as you can be and never be afraid to take charge as necessary."

Dr. Holstein is currently developing "The Selfie Project" to help kids share their feelings and thoughts in a meaningful way via Selfies that can reach millions.  "The Selfie Project" provides a way for young people to go public on a number of subjects.  Bullying is real, school violence is real, drama because of social media is real for kids.'The Selfie Project' is giving voice to those subjects. A pilot TV show is in the development phase.  Teens will have a chance to discuss via their Selfies and in discussion with Dr. Holstein, various topics that affect their lives, from friend drama to fear of assault weapons. As of this moment, teens can share a link to their Selfies and Dr. Holstein will consider them for inclusion on her website, SelfieFilmmakers.com.

How To Talk To Your Kids About School Shootings - Advice Offered By Psychologist And Award Winning Selfie Film Maker Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Holstein, a psychologist/filmmaker and originator of a unique Selfie Film concept, writes award-winning books, plays and produces short films that offer solutions to problems that impact today's teens and tweens

Being a parent has never been easy. However, being a parent in a world in which school shootings seem to happen constantly is beyond difficult. How can we, as parents, understand the fear, the pressure and the overwhelming emotional distress these inflict upon our children? While most parents and grandparents have never dealt with this issue, they have dealt with other issues that can serve to open a meaningful dialogue in the interest of helping kids feel safe. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, psychologist and award winning selfie film maker offers some down to earth advice regarding how to talk to your children about school violence.

"Talk about almost impossible situations in terms of reassurance, this is one of them," Dr. Holstein stated.. "Perhaps the best way to start is openly share feelings and memories in a family discussion. If possible, involve the generations.  Great grandparents may be able to tell stories of food rationing, dark shades over all the windows during WW2 and anxiety that the United States would be hit along the shore by torpedos."

"Grandparents can share hiding under the school desks or being escorted to a basement deep in the school building in case of an atomic bomb attack. Parents can share the Twin Towers coming down and other tragedies of the last 20 years."

"Children being able to see that their own family members have survived trying times is important, as resiliency is to some extent a learned behavior.  If people we love have been brave, then it gives us courage, no matter what our ages."

"Also, as feelings are expressed about school shootings, take the time to explain to your child or children what is being down at their schools to protect them.  You may want to accompany your child or children and have the principal or guidance counselor sit with all of you and explain safety in the school's building."

"Lastly, don't spend family time obsessing on safety.  What you can really provide children as parents, grandparents, even great grandparents is a feeling of 'coming home' of 'belonging' of being 'understood' that never fades away.  The home is a sanctuary for love and peace of mind that you all work at every day.  What does that take?  Some easy steps :

"Hug your child.  Make sure he or she feels that no matter what you expect of him or her, somehow he or she is 'alright, just the way he or she is.'  Mr. Fred Rogers should be your role model when in doubt."

"Spend time listening and chatting with your children.  Phones and other devices need to be put away during sharing time, meal time, bed time.  Perhaps spend some of this time writing to elected officials with your kids encouraging officials to make laws that improve school safety and reduce gun violence in general.  This is a great way to begin to teach your children how to be responsive and involved citizens."

"Intentionally have fun as a family. Laugh, joke (but not at a child's expense) play games, cook together, watch appropriate programs and films, plant a garden, even it if is just in a bucket, do some charity work together or just bake cookies for the senior citizen that lives down the street, keep a jar full of slips of paper on which you or they have written something nice that happened this week or special moments. Read them aloud once a week. Clap, laugh, enjoy."

"Of course, this list is potentially endless.  It is the sense of living together as a family and being in each other's best interests that ultimately gets us through bad or hard times.  Combine that with having fun and feeling loved and I can guarantee as a psychologist that you and your children will thrive, even with issues in our nation that are deadly serious and absolutely must be solved."

Selfies, Social Media And Teens Will Change The World - Dr Barbara Becker Holstein, Psychologist And Award Winning Selfie Film Pioneer Announces 'The Selfie Project'

Dr. Holstein, a psychologist/filmmaker and originator of a unique Selfie Film concept, writes award-winning books, plays and produces short films that offer solutions to problems that impact today's teens and tweens

As the horrific event in Parkland Florida demonstrates, the young people of the world have suddenly become a voice for change; one single voice with a power that just a few years ago would have been inconceivable. While it seems that some adults are stuck in an endless loop, doing things the way things used to be done, dealing from a position that is well within the status quo, the young people have taken action in a way that has never been seen before. The transfer of power to the younger generation will be accomplished, they will speak as one voice, and it will be done via social media.

'We live in tumultuous times, don't ignore them," Dr. Holstein stated. "Children are not safe in their schools, threatened and at times killed by assault rifles, our politics are infiltrated by impersonators on social media who try to bias us before we get to the polls. On the upside kids are finding their voices and are determined that if politicians won't listen to them, they will use their rights as citizens, and vote for those that will appropriately listen to serious concerns.  We may even see the youngest people ever in our country become mayors, governors, assembly people, etc."

"As a psychologist and filmmaker I am listening every day to the 'voices' of our young.  Not only what is said, but the emotions and feelings and needs behind what is articulated.  I consider myself a loyal follower of Mr. Rogers who I watched for many years.  He articulated beautifully why he liked all of us, 'Just the way we were’' and many other concepts of acceptance that soothed entire generations.  You did not need to be a young child to get his message.  It was pure, heart felt and the essence of what we all need to thrive as humans."

"I like to feel I carry some of his torch in the work I am doing. I've written books, a play and I am making films that reassure kids that they are okay, 'just the way they are'. They can solve problems and come up with solutions that lift their spirits and their way of life.  Yes, youngsters can effect change.  Now I am bringing  that work to a new level in 'The Selfie Project'.

'The Selfie Project' is the culmination of my 5 years of research, writing and film making, analyzing and discussing the positive sides of Selfies.  Not only are Selfies here to stay (100,000 of them made their way to the closing ceremony of the Olympic), but they are a means to communicate human longings, meaning, despair, joy, solutions, etc. in a quick accessible way never known to us before. 'The Selfie Project' has several facets: In my filmmaking actors do some of their own filming via their smart phones, allowing them an intensity of expression. We all know we sing best in the shower.  Same idea.  Yet the films are not private, as a shower is, so the intensity expressed can then help the audience of all ages better understand the feelings and needs of kids."

"Also I write and teach about how we can finally be the mistresses of our own diaries, travel logs, etc. as we whisk around the world with our Selfies.  Any woman over 50 will probably admit that there is a power in controlling what and how pictures are taken of her.  Why not hold that control in the palm of our own hands?

The big news is I am using 'The Selfie Project' to help kids share their feelings and thoughts in a meaningful way via Selfies that can reach millions.  Kids know what is on their mind, they just need a way to go public on a number of subjects.  Bullying is real, school violence is real, drama because of social media is real for kids.'The Selfie Project' is giving voice to those subjects."

"Now teens can share with me a link to Selfies and I will consider them for inclusion on our website, SelfieFilmmakers.com. The focus of the SelfieFilmmakers site is to honor different facets of the Selfie Film phenomenon. It is a place to explore what makes these films so inviting psychologically and emotionally. The site will host a variety of people who are the creators of this new wave of filmmaking. All ages covering a variety of topics. From the depths of our souls to the lightest touch of humor, a new wave of filmmaker explore being human, sharing thoughts and feelings in new ways via smart phones.”

Stay tuned for more as I create the pilot show for the new series 'The Selfie Project'.  Four young teens are already working on their Selfies for the Pilot, which will focus on Teen Drama and how it affects their lives. I will be moderating a discussion with them after we see their Selfies."

Holstein's short films have won numerous awards and accolades.

Children's Books That Build Self Esteem – Positive Psychologist Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Announces No-Charge Download Of Two Ebook Samplers

Dr. Holstein believes building self esteem is of the highest priority today for girls, tweens and teens. She now offers two free ebook samplers from two of her best selling books,  'The Truth' and 'Secrets'

Books for girls, tweens and teens can be found everywhere. Only a few offer ways to help kids build self esteem. Even fewer are based in real world scenarios. And fewer still are written by a Positive Psychologist. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein now offers free ebook samplers from two of her most popular books - 'The Truth, I'm A Girl, I'm Smart And I Know Everything' and 'Secrets, You Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine - Maybe'.

Both books are written from the perspective of a young girl and take the form of diary entries. Any parent or teacher can start a great discussion about the issues brought up by the situations in either book: a first crush, her emotions and longings, growing up, parents fighting, school anxieties, problems with best friends, bullying, fear of moving to a new town, sibling rivalry, anxiety about illness, how to navigate growing up and many more.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, one of the originators of Positive Psychology for women and girls, has been a pioneer in the field of positive psychology with her fictional diary format. Both fiction books are intentionally embedded with positive psychology concepts on almost every page.  They read easily as a diary, yet are loaded with the best of positive psychology principles.  Embedded in the girl's diary pages are such concepts as: hope, resiliency, courage, perseverance, loving kindness, cognitive flexibility, problem solving skills, recognition of one's strengths, talents and potential, adaptive skills and more.

"Research validates what we psychologists and educators already know about girls," Dr. Holstein stated. "They often stop trying as hard in school around 10 or 11 and begin to experience many self-esteem issues that may lead to all sorts of problems, from deteriorating academic success to eating disorders, various types of conduct disorders and/or depression.  If these risk factors are combined with other social issues like being bullied, we can begin to see how dangerous these years can be. One way to help girls grow up successfully is through books that encourage them to feel strong, resilient, hopeful and sure of themselves.  Once a girl feels strong and hopeful she is on the way to maintaining the skills she needs emotionally and intellectually to succeed."

"These books fill a void in communicating. Both 'The Truth' and 'Secrets' can help parents, grandparents and educators initiate conversations about issues that impact children, grandchildren and students.  And they also give kids, tweens and teens the courage they need to initiate long overdo family conversations and sharing of feelings, thoughts and creative solutions to everyday issues."

Dr. Holstein is making free ebook samples from both books available at www.payhip.com/drbholstein. Both books are available in Kindle and epub formats. Dr. Holstein can be contacted by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. All of her works are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and all other online retailers. More information is available at her website at http://www.DrBHolstein.com.

She helps teens and tweens develop a positive self image through her books, produces professional videos on subjects (such as selfies) that are important to this age group and, if all that is not enough, has a play in production.

The play reading, titled 'The Locket', will be presented May 20, 2015 in Manhattan. The reading will be directed by Bob Angelini. Some of Bob's directing credits include: NYC: Murrow, (Dramatists Guild, Phoenix Theatre Ensemble), Fourth State of Matter (Theater/New City), The Diary of Anne Frank (Alexrod  PAC and Murrow (Theatre Project). Bob is a member of the Actor's Equity Association, The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, SAG/AFTRA and the NY Shakespeare Society. He is currently the interim Artistic Director of ReVision Theatre in Asbury Park, N. J.

The cast includes:

* Ashley Griffin as the Woman - ( Most well known as the creator of the pop culture phenomenon "Forever Deadward," Ashley has performed on and off Broadway as well as in L.A., Chicago, and the UK. She is currently playing Rosalind in A.N.O.N Productions "As You Like It" in NYC, and will be performing in concert at 54 Below June 13th.

* Cassidy Terracciano as the Girl - (Cassidy has played Elle Woods in 'Legally Blonde', Sally Smith in 'Me and My Girl'. and Anne Frank in 'The Diary of Anne Frank').

*  Shereen Hickman as the Fairy Godmother - (Shereen is known for her work with Cirque du Soleil as the female clown in three of Cirques productions).

* Chris Kateff as the Husband and Narrator - (Chris recently played in 'Every Christmas Story Ever Told - And Then Some').

'The Locket' is the story of a woman, caught in a marital struggle and a loss of her sense of self. She is awakened by a unexpected connection to her girlhood self after finding her diary and her a special locket with a secret, all enhanced by meeting up with a Fairy Godmother. Magic, romance, wisdom, hope and the realization that it is always best to be true to your self become clear messages in 'The Locket'.

"From Shakespeare to 'The Locket', the best plays are very much like selfies," Dr Holstein stated. "A good Shakespearean play has within it the kernels of personality and dilemma that exist for almost everyone.  Likewise, 'The Locket' has within it so many of the dilemmas and issues that girls and then girls as women face.  Selfies are popular because we all like to record and share our lives.  We need to feel unique and special and yet at the same time share our human condition.  The selfie is the easiest way that has come along.  A good selfie restores our sense of self and well-being as we laugh, share and/or cry over the pictures we are sending and/or collecting.  Selfies are the stories of our lives: our travels, babies, college days, marriages, friendship, retirement, bereavement, renewal.  And so is a good play.  It uplifts us, brings us to tears, fills us with enthusiasm and hope, gives us courage to go on and reminds us again and again that we are unique and yet our we are at the same time, in some way, one with everyone else.  I hope 'The Locket' takes the audience to all of those places. And it is comforting to come home to the truth that kids really do have a lot of wisdom and understanding about the world.  In 'The Locket', the magical drama of the theatre brings us closer to the old magic of childhood that we all once understood and were part of, while drawing us into the real dramas that adults face and have to still resolve, one day at a time."

This is the third stage reading of The Truth, the first two took place in Asbury Park, New Jersey to rave reviews.  Comments included:

" Wonderful depiction of a young girl's journey through adolescence."

"This play helps adults understand how children feel.  For example, how much they are hurt by parents fighting."

"The Locket identifies with tweens and teens and the issues they face."

"A very entertaining journey a woman takes from perceived crisis to self-awareness to empowerment through re-living her past."

"An unusual yet needed attempt at describing the development of young girls to adulthood that is rarely considered."

"The Locket is a compelling snapshot of the story of an everyday woman's life."

"The Locket is a warm reminder to girls and women to honor the truths in their hearts."

"The play is a great reminder of who we are and why we think and behave the way we do."

'The Locket', will be presented May 20, 2015 at 6:30 PM, in Manhattan.  If you would like an invitation contact us at: 732-925-2269 or barbara.holstein@gmail.com.  Dr. Holstein is available for media interviews and can be reached using the information below or by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. #LikeaGirl Means Breaking Through The Glass Ceiling And Overcoming Old Ideas About Gender Limitations Says Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Holstein is the author of two highly successful books that help young girls overcome limitations and develop a positive self image. She sees recent campaigns, such as #LikeAGirl and #GirlsCan, as giants strides forward in overcoming society's biases against females

Claire Cain Miller's New York Times article, 'How Teacher Biases Can Sway Girls From Math and Science', documents once again many of the subtle biases, often held unconsciously, that parents, toy manufacturers and even classroom teachers hold about what it means to be female. The article mentions a study done by The National Bureau of Economic Research that explored the consequences of teachers' stereotypical biases.

The good news is that the latest research indicates "how  powerful a little encouragement can be.  Early educational experiences have a quantifiable effect on the math and science courses the students choose later, and eventually the jobs they get and the wages they earn."

Recent marketing campaigns such as #LikeaGirl by Always (introduced during the Super Bowl) and #GirlsCan by Covergirl (featuring Ellen DeGeneres and Queen Latifah) are helping to overcome these long held biases. Dr. Holstein strongly believes that it's very important to reach girls with empowering messages a very early age, as it is in those formative years that self image is formed and future plans are laid. Dr. Holstein's latest published books, 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween', and the sequel, 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen', address these types of issues from the perspective of a young girl. Both books are written in the form of diary entries made by the girl.

In both books the girl enjoys learning and craves answers. Her learning style is inquisitive and she is angry and hurt when people, whether it is her mom or a teacher look the other way and don't take the time to help her fully understand a question or a problem.  Is this girl unique?

As a positive psychologist, educator and author, Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein answers this question. "The girl in 'The Truth' and 'Secrets' is the compilation of hundreds of girls I have seen in schools and in my private practice. Each girl is of course unique.  But in general, girls are inquisitive.  They love to learn.  They love science and math and anything that is fascinating.  Can they be crushed?  Very easily.  How? By parents who miss the boat of understanding their needs and concerns.  By teachers that make assumptions about the girls they teach. By societies that limit opportunities for girls and women. It is because of so many biases that exist that I have dedicated my professional career to helping girls and their parents realize that being #LikeaGirl means breaking through the #GlassCeiling.  It means growing up to be smart, highly educated, ready to take on responsible positions throughout society. It means #GirlsCan."

"My dream is to have every parent sit down with her daughter after they have both read The Truth and Secrets and talk about what that girl needs to grow up strong, resilient, self-confident, educated and ready to take her place in society. There be a million successful ways to be #LikeAGirl. We all need to understand and accept that #GirlsCan."

Dr. Holstein recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.

A Facebook page, thetruthforgirls, highlights many of the topics woven into "The Truth".  Articles, videos, remarks, conversations, visuals, on this page center around many of the issues that tweens face growing up.  These include: self-esteem issues, quarreling in families, divorce, moving to a new home, a new school, best friends, a crush, bullies, a death in the family, money issues, not feeling pretty, feeling sad, feeling lonely, jealousy and more. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for embedding positive psychology concepts.

Her second book in The Truth Series is “Secrets: Diary Of A Gutsy Teen”. In 'Secrets' the girl is 13 years old. She handles many adolescent issues, including a crush, moving, a death in the family, feeling fat and problems with girlfriends.  'Secrets' provides a book kids and parents and grandparents can share and use as a sounding board for needed communication between the generations.

Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives. Both books are being re-released by Sky Pony Press.

#LikeAGirl - Positive Psychologist And Author Barbara Becker Holstein Release 'Secrets - Diary Of A Gutsy Teen', Book That Builds Self Esteem For Teen Girls

'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen' is written to offset the problem of the loss of self-esteem and confidence and resiliency that happens around and after puberty

The Always Super Bowl commercial, designated with the hashtag #LikeAGirl has created massive public awareness around the issue of the loss of self-esteem experienced by teenage girls. The timing is fortuitous, as it comes during the week of Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein's latest book release about building self-esteem for teenage girls, 'Secrets, Diary Of A Gutsy Teen'.

"They say that timing is everything," Dr. Holstein stated. "I was happy to see Always release their Super Bowl commercial this weekend, as their message creates real awareness around the teen self-esteem issue. The release of 'Secrets', written to help teen girls develops self-esteem, happens this week also."

"Psychologists and educators have known for years that girls' confidence falls after puberty.  But it took Always to have the guts and the money to sponsor an ad on Super Bowl Sunday that was so moving that as one commentator said, 'Anyone with a daughter can't help but get chills during the commercial.'"

"Why did I write 'Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen'?  To offset the problem of the loss of self-esteem, confidence and resiliency that happens around and after puberty. Girls lose their enthusiasm about their own talents and potential as they navigate the teens.  That often leads to girls responding to peer pressures in ways that lead to disastrous results, whether it is anoxia, drugs or early pregnancy, etc.  One way to offset these negative results is via role models.  The girl in 'Secrets' is a role model.  She keeps a diary that is full of the normal angst of growing up, but she has guts, courage and a healthy dose of #Girl Power.  She figures things out, recovers from emotional blows and always 'runs like a girl'.  That means she is strong, resilient and successful."

To celebrate the release of 'Secrets', Dr. Holstein will offer no-charge copies of the book to the first 10 parents who contact her via email. Why?

"Because the girl in 'Secrets'" Holstein concluded, "is holding on to her confidence and resiliency through all of events and feelings she must face, the same ones we faced, during our teenage years.  She is a great role model in the same manner as the 10 year olds in #Like a Girl. We must not let our girls lose their confidence as they go through puberty."

Dr. Holstein also recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Gives 5 Tips On How Not To Crush Your Daughter When She Has Her First Crush

Dr. Holstein is a Positive Psychologist and the author of a number of books in 'The Truth' series that help teens and tweens build self esteem and resiliency

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has released an Expert Life Tips video entitled 'How Do I Deal With My Daughter's First Crush?' Dr. Holstein is an internationally recognized Positive Psychologist and author of a number of books that help teens and tweens build self esteem and resiliency. In this video Dr. Holstein offers 5 important tips that can help parents deal with their daughter's first crush.

1. Remember that you too had a first crush.  It is normal developmentally and good practice emotionally to have a crush.

2. Believe your daughter when she says that she is in love.  For the moment, she is.

3. After you accept her having a crush, be there for her.  Understand that she needs to share with you lots of the details.

4. Realize but don't crush her with the knowledge that she will probably marry someone else someday.  You probably did also.

5. Take pride in knowing you have helped your daughter up the developmental ladder from being a kid to becoming a young woman.

"Use these five tips," Dr. Holstein stated, "and you will have supported your daughter as she grows, not crushed her."

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein: The Top Technology Tool For Teaching Children Self Esteem And Resiliency

While many people believe new technologies offer cutting edge solutions to educational challenges, Dr. Holstein believes the key to success lies in engaging teens and tweens at their own level

A recent article in The New York Times entitled "Silicon Valley Turns Its Eye to Education" stated that "The education technology business is chock-full of fledgling companies whose innovative ideas have not yet proved effective....". The key to effectiveness lies in the student's willingness to engage with the technology.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist, Author and Educator, comments: "There is one technology that has been around for thousands of years and clearly has proved itself as an educational tool, and that is the book.  Since printed material first came available, generations upon generations of people have benefited by the educational information they have learned through the printed page. However, even books can improve in what and how they offer learning material.

We know that girls, tweens and teens need help in developing resiliency, and better self-esteem.  Can books be helpful?  Of course.  Most women who grew up reading Judy Bloom novels can attest to the fact that they not only felt attached to the characters in her books, enjoyed the plot, but also found themselves personally enhanced by the read.

When as a positive psychologist I decided to write fiction for girls, tweens and teens, I decided that creating a girl's diary where the reader can identify with the courage, resiliency, humor, talents, longings, problem solving skills, worries and successes with the protagonist would be the way to go.  The truth is my decision has worked.  Girls, tweens, teens, their moms and grand moms and teachers fall in love with the girl in The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween and then love her again as she becomes a teen in Secrets, Diary of a Gutsy Teen.  Then the questions at the end of the books and space to journal, give families a chance to better communicate and understand each other."

Dr. Holstein recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.

How To Create Success As An Indie Publisher - Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Offers 3 Important Tips

While not so for traditionally published authors, marketing continues to be a major challenge for self published authors. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has been down both paths and offers tips on Authors And Technology

Self publishing continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Nevertheless only a small percentage of self published authors experience success in marketing their works. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, internationally known Positive Psychologist and author has been both self published and traditionally published by publishing houses such as Rutledge and Sky Pony Press. She recently offered some important guidance on the Authors and Technology website.

"Authors of self-published books often deceive themselves," Dr. Holstein stated, "by making a number of mistakes in their thinking. There are many fallacies surrounding book marketing. The Big Three are:

1. Believing that telling friends and family about one's latest book or even giving them a copy will create a tidal wave of interest in one's book.

2. Believing that getting endorsements or reviews from those we know, like a sister or a tennis partner will help sales.

3. Believing that your book is unique and that will make a real difference."

What are the facts?

"Telling family and friends about the book? The truth is we usually just end up being annoying and loved ones can't wait until we stop talking about the new book."

"Reviews from family and friends? In truth reviews can be helpful if written from the heart - by strangers.  Of course the more famous that stranger might be, the better.  How hard is it to get to a famous stranger who might take the time to endorse or review your book? Have you seen the movie 'WILD'?  About as hard as traveling the Pacific Crest Trail with a heavy pack on your back."

"Believing a book is unique? The truth is most books are not unique.  In fact, your book may have been inspired by books already in print, or perhaps has already been written by someone much more famous. Do you recognize the book, 'Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU!'? by Barbara Becker Holstein. No? I'm shocked. But I bet you recognize Chicken Soup for the Soul, Book 1, Book 2, etc.  by Jack Canfield."

"What is an self-published author to do?  Crawl under a rock?  Absolutely not.  Books are wonderful.  Each has a message. They heal, they teach, they entertain, they fill a void in our lives, making us laugh and cry and having the courage to carry on.  The solution is to understand what works and what doesn't in the marketing of a book."

"Though we should tell others about our work, the people we want to tell about our work are those who have already decided they want to buy that type of book. This involves understanding one's target audience and understanding what they perceive to be their needs. Concentrate the effort on getting real reviews, unpaid reviews, from credible reviewers. And while most books are not unique, every target audience is unique. If your message to that target audience demonstrates you understand their needs, you will be much more likely to create sales."

Dr. Holstein's pathfinder book ‘The Enchanted Self, A Positive Therapy’ was published in 1997 by Harwood Academic Publishers and is now in its second printing through Brunner-Routledge. Her second book ‘Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU’ has received rave reviews as a wonderful inspirational story book. ‘DELIGHT’, Dr. Holstein’s third book is available in two versions, paperback and a CD-rom that includes music, art, and Dr. Holstein’s voice. She is also the author of a book for teens and tweens entitled, 'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween', in which Dr. Holstein has embedded positive truths and concepts geared to help girls develop self-esteem and resiliency.  The Truth is published by Sky Pony Press.  The sequel, 'Secrets, Diary Of A Gutsy Teen' will be released February 1, 2015.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Offers Important Advice And Real Help To Self Published Authors

Holstein is a highly successful author who has been down both publishing paths - traditional publishing and self publishing

A newscaster interviewing Diane Von Furstenberg, December 11, 2014, about her new book, 'Baring it All', commented: "You can't get to where you want to go with some rough times."  Fortunately, Diane responded that she was lucky and succeeded with the American Dream early on.  However, both authors who have been lucky enough to find a publisher and Indie book authors often suffer a different type of journey.

"Today many authors find themselves walking through mine fields for years and years," Dr. Holstein stated.  "Over the last 20 years, literally every time an author turns around there is a new way to sell books and usually that new way involves an outlay of a lot of money.  Even worse is the truth that most suggestions, unless applied from dawn to dusk with a bit of fairy dust luck thrown in, led to few books being sold.  Profit margins? Practically nothing. As a result most authors remain in the red."

"That said, bringing one's voice to the pubic via a book that shares a journey, wisdom, or a great read to escape by, is a thrilling adventure.  Where would we be without a good book when we yearn to learn something new or just lose ourselves for a few hours?"

Grateful for the thousands of authors who have dared to spend their money and give themselves to writing books, Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, as a positive psychologist and author of books for the past 20 years, declares: "I understand the value of the written word to sooth, to heal, to provide inspiration and relief as we go through life.  I also understand how frustrating it is for an author to throw money down an endless drain of hope that usually brings no results in terms of sales and public exposure."

"Some of my books have publishers, but 'Around Every Corner, Romance & Mystery...' is at the moment an Indie book.  I've decided to look for the opportunities that don't involve my check book.  Here are two great ones that I am participating in now:  Wattpad and SELF-e.  Wattpad is a website you can post chapters from your book, chapter by chapter, giving the author a chance to build a following.  It even allows one to put up a video to go with each chapter, which I have done from my YouTube playlist, 'Around Every Corner'. SELF-e is an opportunity for one's book to be selected by libraries, which has been almost impossible for Indies. Am I hoping for miracles? Of course, every author does deep in her heart.  But at least I know I didn't make out a check that was cashed as someone laughed all the way to the bank."

Dr. Holstein is also open to the possibility of using product placement within her romance novel. "If any company wants their product mentioned in 'Around Every Corner, Romance & Mystery...', and I don't feel it comprises the story line, I will be thrilled to put the product in.  I will be happy to have Natalie drinking Nescafe or Maggie putting MAC lipstick on."

Holiday Gift For Girls That Helps Build Self Esteem - Dr Barbara Becker Holstein's 'Diary Of A Gutsy Tween' Now Available

Holstein's book uses Positive Psychology concepts in an engaging work of fiction for teens and tweens that helps girls build self esteem

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein is an internationally known Positive Psychologist and author. Her latest book for pre-teen and teenage girls, 'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween', can serve as a Holiday gift that will help girls build self esteem at a time in their lives when they need it most.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, one of the originators of Positive Psychology for women and girls, has been a pioneer in the field of positive psychology with her fictional diary, 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween'.  It may be the first fiction for tweens that is intentionally embedded with positive psychology concepts on almost every page.  It reads easily as a tween's diary. It is loaded with the best of positive psychology principles.

"Girls often stop trying as hard academically in school around 10 or 11 and begin to experience many self-esteem issues that may lead to all sorts of problems, from deteriorating academic success to eating disorders, various types of conduct disorders and/or depression.  If these risk factors are combined with other social issues like being bullied, we can begin to see how dangerous these years can be. One way to help girls grow up successfully is through books that encourage them to feel strong, resilient, hopeful and sure of themselves.  Once a girl feels strong and hopeful she is on the way to maintaining the skills she needs emotionally and intellectually to succeed.  The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween is one of those books.  Written from the viewpoint of a girl who is just like other girls and also strong and inventive enough to hold on to the best of herself as she enters puberty, she instills hope and encouragement in those who read the book."

Readers of 'The Truth' have made the following comments:

"Reading this book made me realize I really need to take more time to talk with my daughter about her fears, worries, hopes and dreams."

"I like this book because it seems like a real girl writing the story. It shows the ups and downs in an 11 year olds life... all these things could happen, like your parents fighting, being in love (or you think you are)."

"What an awesome concept to write a book like a journal of an adolescent girl. I loved the simplicity of it! My daughter is 10 and she has a hard time reading, but this was right up her ally and she loved it just as much as I did."

"What makes this a winning book is the universal connection of putting feelings into words that all girls and grown up girls can relate to."

"After reading The Truth, my granddaughter asked me how Dr. Holstein had known so much about her?  I told her that Dr. Holstein didn't know her at all.  My granddaughter replied, 'But she knows exactly how I feel and think!'"

A great book for mothers and daughters to read together, 'The Truth' is aimed to improve communication, understanding, and self-esteem for young girls as they enter a difficult time in their lives.

'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween' is available to teachers and educators at no charge upon request. Dr. Holstein can be contacted by email at drbarbara@enchantedself.com. All of her works are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and all other online retailers. Holstein's book uses Positive Psychology concepts in an engaging work of fiction for teens and tweens that helps 5th and 6th graders build self esteem

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, internationally known Positive Psychologist and author is a leading authority on building self esteem.   Her latest work 'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween', can serve as a Holiday gift that will provides something very few gifts for kids can provide - important self esteem concepts and principles.

It read easily as a tween's diary, her ups and downs, her crushes and her problems. It is loaded with the best of positive psychology principles.  Embedded in the girl's diary pages are such concepts as: hope, resiliency, courage, perseverance, loving kindness, cognitive flexibility, problem solving skills, recognition of one's strengths, talents and potential, adaptive skills and more.

"I hate Angela and I wish she would move away tomorrow!" "I get so worried when I hear my parents fighting at night." "My mother thinks my crush is silly. I know I am in love!" "I have so many questions about growing up.  Who will answer them?" "I feel so awful when Jake makes fun of me." "When I grow up I going to remember how to have fun with my kids and never look away."

"Growing up is tough," Dr. Holstein stated. "Adults don't always understand you (even though they were once kids), and girls and tweens face increasing pressure to be, look, or act a certain way."

"Written in the voice of a girl on the cusp of becoming a teenager, The Truth is a perfect Holiday Gift.  In an easy read, it gives young girls an opportunity to see how a girl, who is in many ways like themselves, handles her toughest problems and most personal thoughts. Each new page brings forth a discussion to help girls handle everyday problems: How do you survive a bully? How do you handle a crush on a boy? What can you do about relentless teasing by your peers? What really matters as you grow older?"

In a positive and supportive diary-entry format, Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein encourages tween girls to carry the most precious parts of themselves into adulthood. A great book for mothers and daughters to read together, 'The Truth' is aimed to improve communication, understanding, and self-esteem for young girls as they enter the rocky road of teenager-dom.

Feedback for the new book has been positive from both educators and readers. One educator stated, ""As a teacher I was looking for a book that addressed many issues girls ages 9 to 12 may incur. This book certainly opens up communication between a mother and her daughter, and in doing so it also bridges the gap between other adults, as well....I am looking forward to implementing this easy read book into my classroom in order to impress upon my students how to gain some very necessary coping skills to carry with them in their lives."

One young reader stated, "The minute my friend told me about your book I started to read it and I absolutely loved your book! I really liked how you didn't include the girls name so we could try to make it up our selves. I also liked how she said her thoughts and you can totally picture how she feels."

Another stated, "I was back there with her! Things I had forgotten--this book took me back. I was crying out of joy--such sweet memories."
