Top Motivational Speaker And Bestselling Author Rocky Romanella On What It Takes To Become An Effective Leader

A highly sought keynote speaker, trainer and Forbes Contributor, Romanella is founder and principal of 3SIXTY Management Services, LLC. He has over 40 years of leadership at Fortune 100's and most recently served as Chief Executive Officer and Director for UniTek Global Services, after retiring from a 36-year career with UPS.

Taking on a new leadership role is a major decision, as there are a number of considerations. These might include embracing fresh or alternative responsibilities, pondering the financial ramifications, contemplating one's career path, and delving into the realm of emotions - the list goes on and on. Yet none holds greater significance than the shift in mindset needed to embrace this new leadership position. This frequently demands that we perceive familiar elements from an entirely new perspective - but how do we actually accomplish that?

Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella addressed this subject in a recent newsletter article. In that piece, he wrote in part:

Accepting your role is an important topic, not only when you are accepting a new position or additional responsibilities, but also an important one when changes are happening in your current position or inside the organization.

I believe there are 4 keys to this acceptance.

1. Accept Your Leadership role and all that comes with it
2. Set clear boundaries for all to follow
3. Communicate effectively with everyone you lead
4. Take action to get the results you want and need

Let’s discuss the actions steps you will need to understand, embrace and accept on your acceptance journey to success.

1. You are the leader - the role model. The reality and this new reality must be reflected in your attitude, your approach, and most importantly, through your behaviors. Everything you do speaks to Who you are, What you stand for and What you will not compromise. This is especially critical during an organizational change.

A) You are The Brand Ambassador
B) You get things done through others
C) You confer with your partners from other departments and functions
D) You become familiar with organizational policies, procedures, and regulations to protect your people, your company and your family
E) You become a learning machine and Lead by example. You avoid passing the buck and when it doubt, do the work to find the answer

2. Brand Ambassador. You welcome all new people. Sit with all new management and review with them the values, the mission, and goals of the organization. You understanding the changes the organization is trying to make. You set the tone.

A) Without a road map and a clear understanding of the “rules of the road”, it can be harder for employees to get to know where they need to go and where we need them to go.
B) Understanding what you and the company expect from them and what they can expect from you is paramount to their success, the company’s success and ultimately your success. Be clear on the:
1) Policies and Procedures
2) Behaviors and Actions

3. The Art of Communication is the language of Leadership.
A) Inform people of the things they need to do and need to know to do their jobs
B) Instruct on what and how
C) Learn what employees, customer and other departments need
D) Clarify expectations, roles, and responsibilities along with time frames
E) Coach the people in your care to help them learn, improve and grow
F) Motivate your team to higher levels of performance satisfaction
G) Receive and understand input, feedback, questions, and concerns
H) Correct performance and behavior problems
I) Commend and reinforce “ A Job Well Done”

4. Act. Begin Somewhere. You cannot build a reputation on what you intend to do.
A) Analyze the issues and or situation and collect and consider all available facts
B) Consult with others. Collect information from everyone and at all levels affected.
C) Tailor a strategy. Develop a written plan, a well-thought-out plan with timelines, specific activities and roles and responsibilities.
D) Implement the plan and initiate the actions you have identified. Coordinate and oversee the plans going forward.
E) Observe what happens and closely monitor activities and outcomes. Request progress reports on a timely basis.
F) Navigate your way through necessary adjustments. Address obstacles and seize opportunities that surface

Top Motivational Speaker And Bestselling Author Rocky Romanella Describes The Importance Of Patience In Making Business Decisions

It is said that patience is a virtue. However, in the fast-paced world of business, there is often a tendency to rush into decisions without thoroughly evaluating all the available information and considering the potential long-term consequences. That can be dangerous. Rushing into action without a comprehensive plan can often result in mistakes, oversights, and missed opportunities.

The relatively rare trait of patience, as applied to business decisions, allows business leaders to step back, take a deep breath, and approach decision-making with a much clearer and composed mindset. By taking the time to gather relevant data, analyze different options, and weigh the potential risks and rewards, this patient decision-making approach can lead to more informed choices that are aligned with the overall strategic objectives of the business.

Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella addressed this issue in a recent newsletter. In that piece he said, "Patience is a virtue, but also an excellent Leadership Skill often misunderstood. Why does this 'belief that we need to make decisions quickly' happen more times than necessary? Because we use words like decisive, aggressive, action-oriented, focused as the power words to describe success. While these are important leadership skills and traits, we need to take a closer look and understand the role of patience in our skill set.

"One of the least understood characteristics of working together in an organization is the skill to know when there is a need for patience on the part of the leader, who is charged with the responsibility to make the final decision, even when there is pressure to 'make the decision.'

"Here is a common example. We often have key individuals, who we trust and respect their judgment with diametrically opposed points of view, which are well-thought-out points of view. As leaders, we are often asked to make the final decision. Often, this feels like a judicial session vs. a brainstorming session. This is when I believe patience becomes a strength and not a weakness. We can challenge each of them to “not stop at their first right answer,” and to look past it, to see if there is a more inclusive answer that keeps everyone involved in the solution and takes us a step further. This only happens when we exercise patience in the process. In my experience, we often will get a third answer that will create the ultimate win, win, win and keep everyone involved."

Patience also helps in managing expectations, as it recognizes that certain goals and outcomes may take time to materialize. It allows for realistic timelines and provides the necessary space for businesses to cultivate and nurture relationships with stakeholders, customers, and employees, ensuring sustainable growth and success in the long run.

"Working together works because it is the opposite of the judicial process where we are picking winners and losers," Romanella continued. "It is all about conversation, research, being open-minded, and the desire to spark a broad-minded fresh start. Patience used wisely will lead you, your leaders, and your organization to become Broad-based Leaders who play a variety of leadership roles (for example, driving, delegating, supporting, empowering, collaborating, and coaching). This process inspires others to perform at their best and creates a climate that fosters personal investment, excellence, and teamwork. Through your patience and inclusion, it sets the tone and allows the pursuit of aggressive goals."

The Mentor: Top Motivational Speaker And Bestselling Author Rocky Romanella Talks About How Recognizing Our Mentors Can Help Lead To Success

Rocky Romanella is a highly sought-after motivational speaker and bestselling author, with a passion for helping individuals and organizations achieve their full potential. With many decades of experience, Rocky has inspired and motivated audiences across the globe with his dynamic presentations, powerful storytelling, and practical strategies for success, based on Balanced Leadership principles. His bestselling book, 'Tighten The Lug Nuts', has helped hundreds of people overcome obstacles, unleash their creativity, and transform their lives. His unique ability to connect with audiences on a deep level has earned him a reputation as one of the top motivational speakers in the country. One of his primary mentors was Coach John Wooden. Rocky recently shared his thoughts on the importance of recognizing our mentors:

I think it is important to take the time to think about and recognize those individuals both present and in the past that have made significant contributions to your personal and professional growth. For those who are still with us, a simple thank-you note or quick call maybe a nice way to recognize and thank them. Some of our mentors have passed, and keeping them in our thoughts, prayers and in our minds is a way to recognize them as well. Each of us can add our own personal touch to this recognition.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. For each of us there is person, a mentor, who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are. Sharing the story with those in your care is a way of recognizing them but also showing the value you are placing in mentorship.

For me, I have been fortunate to have worked with and mentored by some very special people, and none more remarkable than Coach John Wooden. As we move into this incredible time we call "MARCH MADNESS” the books by legendary Coach John Wooden have had a profound influence in my life and career. March Madness always brings me back to one of the great honors in my career and life, meeting and spending time with Coach Wooden.

I originally went to college to be a High School History teacher and a baseball coach, so I have always had a passion for coaching and a belief that great leaders were great coaches and teachers.

Coach Wooden was both gracious and hospitable as we met and spoke in his home. I count this as one of the incredible moments in my career, and it brought the books to life. After this meeting and conversation, Coach Wooden was an integral part my leadership world.

Coach Wooden has been called one of the most respected coaches in the history of sports and the most successful coach in men’s college basketball history. Under his leadership, the Bruins achieved many accomplishments, including a record 10 NCAA men’s basketball championship titles. Many believe the records set under Coach Wooden’s leadership are unbreakable. He was also well known for his inspirational theories.

At our meeting, during our conversations, and in all the future readings, Coach Wooden helped shape my professional life and values.

Coach Wooden identified two cornerstones that laid the foundation for his “Pyramid of Success”—industriousness and enthusiasm. Industriousness, as Wooden defined it, is more than just showing up and going through the motions. It is work, hard work. It is the ability to not only work hard but to continue to improve. On the other end of the structure is enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the heart behind the hard work. I learned and added my distinctive touch over time that “Hard work without enthusiasm is just that—hard work.” Enthusiasm is the ability to reach your full potential, to prepare and perform at your highest level. It is contagious, It brushes off on those you work with, those you work for, and the ones you lead. Coach Wooden and I were fortunate to coach, teach, and mentor some excellent individuals who went onto highly successful careers; Coach Wooden in the basketball arena and I in the business arena.

Two of the most important words in any language are, Thank You! Take the time to say those two words with that person who made a difference in your life.

The 100-Day Plan For 2023 - Rocky Romanella’s Cutting Edge Strategic Business Planning Process Can Transform Any Company

A highly sought keynote speaker and trainer, Romanella is founder and principal of 3SIXTY Management Services, LLC. He has over 40 years of leadership at Fortune 100's and most recently served as Chief Executive Officer and Director for UniTek Global Services, after retiring from a 36-year career with UPS.

The new year is a time of renewal that allows for a fresh start in both our in our personal lives and in our strategic business planning. However, like New Year's resolutions, the best laid business plans can easily be forgotten when we get caught up in the day-to-day activities that require us to put out fires and wrestle with ongoing business challenges. Rocky Romanella's 100-Day plan offers an easy to implement blueprint for a strategic planning process that is both powerful in approach and elegant in its simplicity, all the while assuring we stay on point.

The 100-Day Plan is based on Romanella's concept of Balanced Leadership. The three components in Balanced Leadership are your company’s customers, employees and stakeholders. All of this is built on a framework that puts less emphasis on "doing things right" and instead focuses on "doing the right thing" for those three groups.

"I am a believer in discipline, hard work, and enthusiasm," Romanella stated. "These are the components behind the business plan. It is also important to operate as efficiently as possible and with integrity, compassion, and good will. Finally, it is critical for a business and a leader to establish who you are, what you stand for, and what you will never compromise. It’s the foundation of the 100-Day Plan and what will get tested on the difficult days and periods of the business plan."

As you revisit your business plan or personal action plan, often at the start of the new year, keep in mind: You set the tone for its success from the onset – in the first 100 days according to Romanella. During this time and with a methodical Balanced Leadership approach, you need to examine the current and future state of your three main constituent groups. How well are you delighting your customers and anticipating their needs? How engaged are your team members? Are your drivers of success on track to meet earnings expectations? Through the lens of Balanced Leadership, you will set the foundation with regards to expectations, focus, and culture. Your business plan will then determine what you wish to accomplish in the first 100 days; furthermore, it will determine your focus for monthly execution, serve as a blueprint for the execution of your team’s quarterly objectives, and reveal the year-long program that will drive initiatives to enhance individual and team success.

"Setting clear expectations for your team through your leadership is a strategic imperative when it comes to ensuring alignment with your values, mission, strategy, and 100-Day Plan. This process of setting Leadership Expectations is an essential accountability tool," explains Romanella.

Romanella also firmly believes in personal integrity — always striving to do what is right for your customers, people, and stakeholders. “No matter what your level, effective leaders must remember they are role models and ensure there is consistency between your words and actions,” he shares. “You must live your word; establish open, candid, trusting and respectful relationships at all levels and especially with your direct reports. When you treat all people inside and outside of your organization fairly and respectfully, you will see others bring their own discipline, hard work, and enthusiasm to work each day.”

More information on the development of a 100-Day Plan and a wealth of other strategic planning material is available in Romanella’s highly praised, bestselling book, 'Tighten the Lug Nuts: The Principles of Balanced Leadership.'

The Biggest Mistake New Salespeople Make Can Be Corrected Says Top Motivational Speaker And Bestselling Author Rocky Romanella

Romanella's best-selling book, Tighten The Lug Nuts, was recently ranked #1 in Business Leadership and Business Management. Rocky is a former CEO with over 40 years of experience.

Salespeople are the lifeblood of any business. The sales department plays a crucial role in the business cycle, as without sales, a business would cease to exist. The salesperson role is multifaceted, and requires a skill set that is difficult to master. That said, many new salespeople find that, even with top-level training and the best of efforts, it is still possible to fail. Why?

Top motivational speaker, bestselling author and leadership expert Rocky Romanella is intimately familiar with the sales process, as he has played a key leadership role in a number of highly successful organizations. He recently addressed this vitally important subject in a newsletter, now available at his website at https://3SixtyManagementServices.com. In that article he stated:

“The biggest mistake inexperienced salespeople make is when they waste valuable time dealing with non-prospects. Prospect planning is the foundation of your business. Even if you are an expert at needs assessment, designing perfect solutions, presenting, and closing, you will never reap the rewards of more sales unless you have a critical mass of prospects.”

What is a Prospect?

Prospects are not companies. Prospects are people. In today’s business world, where decision-making is often team-based, you may need to sell to multiple prospects to sell the business.

Who do prospects include?

1. Gatekeepers: People who have no buying authority but who control access to those that do.
2. Information Providers: People who gather information for decision makers or who can provide critical information for you.
3. Influencers: People who have access to the buying authority and can influence their decision.
4. Decision Makers: People who can make the decision to buy.
5. Buyers: People who have the financial authority to buy.

Unless the people you’re talking with are gatekeepers, information providers, influencers, decision makers, or buyers, you are wasting your time.

Asking key questions to determine if people in your target companies are prospects is called qualifying. A name is only a suspect, not a prospect. Selling is about moving from suspect to prospect to customer.

How To Take Your Company From Good To Great - 5 Things You Need To Know Offered By Top Motivational Speaker And Bestselling Author Rocky Romanella

Romanella's best-selling book, Tighten The Lug Nuts, was recently ranked #1 in Business Leadership and Business Management. Rocky is a former CEO with over 40 years of experience and has recently developed a new podcast, The Leadership Library Podcast.

What is the difference between a company that is "good", and one that is "great"? This is not a question that is easily answered. We would likely find that the answer would vary greatly from one person to another. But it is also true that there are traits that set a "good" company apart from a "great" company. The answer to that question is the focus of a recent two-part article by top motivational speaker and best-selling author Rocky Romanella. He provides some penetrating insight as he first defines the difference, and then shows us how to go from good to great. His article reads in part:

"As I think about the process of leading a great company, to me good is a point along the way on the journey to great. Good companies take time and reflect on the values and principles that guide them. Great companies build an uncompromising culture and legacy that generations will reference and aspire to be a part of. Greatness is a destination, and good is a milestone along the greatness journey.

"During challenging times, and periods of rapid changes, good companies and leaders view consistency as their high-water mark. Great companies and leaders emerge from these difficulties a stronger and more competitive company positioned for remarkable success – like a phoenix.

"In many cases good companies are in a maintenance mode and are happy with relative results, whereas great companies and leaders are initiative-taking, highly- motivated with a strong commitment to growing and having exponential results.

"Both companies are on their journey, Good inc., and Great inc., on their journey however, the road had a fork in it – an unimaginable detour. It was the course they were given; their only path to follow.

"The road ahead is theirs to navigate. Good Inc. will manage tactfully and consistently. Great Inc. will be the Architects of Their Own Destinies. They will decide:

* What are the steps we will take to build back our company?
* What will our brand stand for in this evolving time?
* What will our brand promise be?

"Good companies rely on what they know to do, Great companies prepare for what they will need to do. They understand they will need to understand their business, personal situations and customer responsibilities from these new perspectives and an understanding of:

• what we do well
• where there is opportunity to grow
• where there is opportunity with new customers in new markets that we have identified
• how we continue to build our lives both personally and professionally

In the piece Rocky presents the five critical components of success. These are:

1. Safety: Starts with each employee, where safety is first, last and always present. We take a proactive approach to identify and prevent safety issues through our safety training and education programs. We are committed and take responsibility of our own safety, those who are around us and those we transport.

2. Commitment: is what transforms the promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions and the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making the time when there is none. Commitment is the stuff character is made of.

3. Respect and Integrity role models: Consistency between words and actions; Lives his or her word; Establishes open, candid, trusting respectful relationships at all levels; Treats all people inside and outside fairly; Makes decisions that are effective rather than politically correct.

4. Leadership: We expect each employee to act as a leader, be responsible and accountable in their role within our organization

5. Alignment: By changing our way of thinking and acting we will achieve unity, enhance performance, anticipate problems and identify opportunities for growth.
