Epic Selfie Spree: Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Author Of 'The Truth', Offers Advice To Parents

While selfies have become a primary means for self expression with teens today, Dr. Holstein believes both teens and parents must use discretion and common sense

A recent piece on the ABC News website, entitled "Meet The Dad Who Recorded His Daughter's Epic Selfie Spree", related the story of 13 year old Skylar Beckham who, according to the information, takes about 50 selfies a day. Her father filmed her during one such session and placed the recording on YouTube, where it garnered over one million views.

"From my vantage point as a positive psychologist specializing in girls, tweens and teens," Dr. Holstein stated, "I see Skylar's fascination with herself as very healthy.  Her pictures that she sends to her friends are artistic, dramatic and full of life.  They allow her to express on many levels personal feelings and facial mannerisms than we typically don't allow in our society.  However, the pictures her father took when she was preparing a Selfie don't do her a favor.  They reveal a private moment that should have stayed private.  Selfies should remain the privileged decision of the girl taking them, not the unexpected decision of someone else."

"Psychologically, Selfies are good for personal development at any age as they allow us to express, by our choice, extra dimensions of ourselves.  Let's keep it that way.  These are portraits of ourselves that technology now offers us.  Like all technology we must treat it with respect and in doing so our kids and even our grandmas can 'show off' and  keep a record of their lives, while feeling good about themselves in ways that work for them and certainly don't hurt anyone."

Dr. Holstein is fascinated with how selfies have impacted society, and the effects on teens and tweens. She recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Holstein is also offering Creative performance workshops.  The first one took place on Thursday, July 31 at the While House on Monmouth Rd. in Oakhurst, New Jersey.  The tweens made Selfie posters about what makes them gutsy. Then they performed in videos based on story lines from 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween'.  What made the experience creative and unique for the tweens was that they got to act as the girl and her best friend Angela in scenes based on the book, but then they got to do improvisational work where they developed the characters and the solutions to their problems way beyond what is written in the diary.  This was an amazing experience for the tweens, helping them to recognize not only their acting abilities but abilities to create, solve problems and modify beyond the script given to them.  They left the Workshop feeling empowered, which is what being gutsy is all about.

A Facebook page, thetruthforgirls, highlights many of the topics woven into "The Truth".  Articles, videos, remarks, conversations, visuals, on this page center around many of the issues that tweens face growing up.  These include: self-esteem issues, quarreling in families, divorce, moving to a new home, a new school, best friends, a crush, bullies, a death in the family, money issues, not feeling pretty, feeling sad, feeling lonely, jealousy and more. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for positive psychology.

Her second book in The Truth Series is “Secrets: You Tell Me Yours and I’ll Tell You Mine…Maybe!”  Now the girl is 13. She handles many adolescent issues, including a crush, moving, a death in the family, feeling fat and problems with girlfriends.  'Secrets' provides a book kids and parents and grandparents can share and use as a sounding board for needed communication between the generations.

Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives. Both books are being re-released by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Holstein believes that getting in touch with one's strengths, talents and potential at every age, as well as learning how to hold on to the wise, playful, happy, gutsy and energetic girl that still resides within each woman is essential for mental health.

To assist this process she has written many books, including: case study material as presented in ‘The Enchanted Self, A Positive Therapy’; inspirational stories as presented in ‘Recipes for Enchantment, The Secret Ingredient is YOU’ and romance, mystery books designed to bring fun, excitement, romance and positive psychological truths into women's lives.  Latest books are:  Parts 1 and 2 of ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’, available in paper and as e-books; Parts 1,2 and 3 of ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’ available in one book, incorporated into ‘Around Every Corner, Romance & Mystery...’.

Selfies Can Be Dangerous: Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Author Of 'The Truth', Offers Guidelines

While selfies are a popular means of self expression today, Dr. Holstein believes one current trend holds real danger for teens and tweens. She offers guidance and an empowering alternative to help develop self-esteem and resiliency

A recent article by Douglas Quenqua on the New York Times site brought out a major issue that affects teens and tweens today. As noted in the article, we have always been forced to deal with the "Do you think I am pretty?" question. These days, that question is being asked in public by many young girls who post selfies and video on social media and video sharing sites. This practice can result in horrendous consequences for the teen, as related in the article. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and author of "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween", believes this practice can be dangerous.

"Girls, tweens and teens need ways to not ask others for validity around their looks or themselves," Dr. Holstein stated. "Using Selfies to ask the random public to comment on one's looks can be incredibly dangerous. Instead kids need to affirm and acknowledge for themselves what they feel proud about in themselves.  Selfies and selfie videos can be great for that if used correctly.  That is why I'm having a Selfie contest around the concept of 'I'm a Gutsy Tween'.  This contest encourages tweens to decide for themselves what makes them feel proud about themselves and then to take a picture of themselves either doing the special activity or holding a sign that tells us what makes the tween feel gutsy."

Teens and tweens age 9 to 15 are invited to submit selfies that celebrate a strong self image and resiliency. The contest is being held to coincide with the recent release of the newly revised and expanded edition of 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. Now published by Sky Pony Press, the new title is "The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween".

Selfies submitted should show the subject holding a placard say "I'm a gutsy tween because" or "I'm a gutsy teen because" with an accompanying statement detailing why. The contest is open until August 31, 2014. Dr. Holstein reserves the right to reject any picture or image that might be deemed offensive, contain inappropriate language or images, be misleading or for any other reason. All participants must prove they have parent or guardian permission to submit the photo. Winners will receive a signed copy of 'The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween.' Contestant entries will be posted on Dr. Holstein's Facebook page with parent or guardian permission.

Dr. Holstein is also offering Creative performance workshops.  The first one took place on Thursday, July 31 at the While House on Monmouth Rd. in Oakhurst, New Jersey.  The tweens made Selfie posters about what makes them gutsy. Release of 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween', by Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Scheduled For July 1, 2014

Sky Pony Press will release Dr. Holstein's very popular book for tweens, "The Truth I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything". The re-release is scheduled for July 1

An expanded and updated edition of "The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything" will be released by Sky Pony Press on July 1, 2014.  The book has been retitled to "The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween".

Dr Holstein's novel is a fictional diary, written by an 11 year old girl, for girls, tweens and teens. The novel centers on the development of self-esteem and resiliency.

"Of course there are other diary books out for girls and tweens and even boys," Dr. Holstein stated. "But the difference between mine and say a series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, is that 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween', has been written by a positive psychologist (that’s me!) and every page is designed to encourage positive thinking, resiliency, positive self-regard, hopefulness, optimism, a recognition and valuing of one’s talents, strengths and potential, and much more. Every page can be used as a separate guidance lesson if one wished to. At the same time, the book is a page turner in its own right and kids enjoy the quick, easy read as they would any other really good fiction."

Holstein's book covers issues that impact  today's teens and tweens. A secret entry written by the girl in The Truth in her  diary, demonstrates how a Selfie picture helps her feel better about  herself.

"I hate Andrea.  She laughed as a walked by and said something about I looked like a toad.  It didn't make any sense what she said, except my sweater was green and maybe toads are green.  But after she said it I felt miserable anyway.  All day long I felt more and more ugly, hearing her chuckle and words in my head over and over.  When I got home I lay down on my bed and couldn't move.  I felt like everything good about me was sucked out of me.  Finally, I had to get up for supper.  Everyone asked what was wrong.  I didn't tell anyone.  It felt too bad to even share.  Later, after eating almost nothing but some peas (I love peas) I got an idea.  I went into the bathroom with my phone and locked the door.  I started to take Selfie pictures of myself.  At first it was hard to smile, but after awhile I felt a little better and I not only smiled, I was began to pose like I used to when I loved to look at myself in the mirror.  That was when I was a little kid, like 9.  Anyway, after I took about 20 pictures I mailed some of them to Angela and she wrote back right away saying how cute I looked!  Then she sent me some of herself and we began to text.  Soon I was okay again. I had found a way to get back at Andrea."

Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens in their lives. Both books will be re-released by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein To Release "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween"

Dr. Holstein's new book is an updated release by Sky Pony Press of her popular book for tweens, "The Truth I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything". The release is scheduled for July 1st, 2014

On July 1, 2014, the newly revised and expanded edition of "The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything" will be published by Sky Pony Press.  The new title is "The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween".  This release falls on the heels of "The Locket", a page to stage play version of "The Truth", which was performed in Asbury Park on May 5th, 2014 to rave reviews.

"The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything", the acclaimed novel by Dr. Holstein, is a fictional diary for girls, tweens and teens. Written by an 11 year old girl as a diary, Dr. Barbara has embedded within the story positive truths and concepts geared to help girls develop self-esteem and resiliency.

"I'm very excited," Dr. Holstein stated, "that Sky Pony Press is releasing an expanded version of 'The Truth'. The girl really has so much to say, that an expanded edition is in order.  After all she is the secret voice of most tweens.  She gets us, whether we are 11 or 80 to think about all the issues that face a girl growing up in our society.  She shares her deepest feelings around her first crush, her parents fighting, her anxieties about moving, her feelings about bullies, her triumphs and her problems.  And she finds a way to stay proud and sure of herself as she faces what is inevitable: growing into being a teen.  She is in her own way, every girl's 'Selfie'.  She is a captured moment of all of us, those that are girls and tweens and those of us that were tweens long ago."

Dr. Holstein is a prolific writer who crosses genres with ease. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for positive psychology.

Selfies - The Good, The Bad And The Dangerous - Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Urges Caution

As a Positive Psychologist, Dr. Holstein believes it is vitally important for women to take charge of both the living and recording of their lives. The selfie is both a reflection and a record of that opportunity. There are inherent dangers however

Everywhere we look today we see 'selfies'. The most famous 'selfie' ever taken, a celebrity explosion taken by Ellen Degeneres at the Oscars, made worldwide headlines. Others did not fare so well. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and prolific published author, has made the case for the selfie. While many believe the selfie comes only under the heading of innocent fun, Dr. Holstein believes it can serve to help build esteem and to help record our lives. Used inappropriately, however, it can have undesired consequences. What is the difference?

"A selfie," Dr. Holstein stated "of yourself engaging in wildly inappropriate behavior is what we call in psychology, sliding down the developmental ladder.  It can be fun and feel good to do silly things when we are in our private worlds.  There, to regress is okay and can be even healthy. But to take a selfie of yourself when you are in your private space and then to put it out on the Internet or Facebook, Istagram, etc. can be dangerous.  Why? Because it shows you in a regressed state and it is out there forever.  When you go for a job, what pops up first?"

"On the other hand, using the selfie concept to share with loved ones of friends pictures of yourself traveling, celebrating, or anything that is age appropriate can be good for your mental health and the others in your life.  Metaphorically you are now able to hold hands across the miles. For example, the moment you hold your newly adopted new puppy in your arms, as he lovingly licks your face, can be engaging and feel good to all concerned.  You won't lose a job because you just adopted a pet!  Lastly, privately using selfies to record a diary, a record of your life that brings you satisfaction, as I have mentioned in a recent article on yourtango is very healthy.  Never before have we had such a quick way to visually capture meaningful moments and memories that enhance our own mental health."

Dr. Holstein is a prolific writer who crosses genres with ease. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens, ‘The Truth, (I’m a girl, I’m Smart and I Know Everything)’ is a first in using fiction for positive psychology. Ellen DeGeneres, Selfies And Narcissism - Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Makes The Case For The Selfie

As a Positive Psychologist and author of a romance novel entitled 'Around Every Corner, Romance & Mystery . . .', Dr. Holstein believes it is vitally important for women to take charge of both the living and recording of their lives. The selfie is both a reflection and a record of that opportunity

Everywhere we look today we see the most famous 'selfie' ever taken. Ellen Degeneres set a new standard for the selfie with her recent celebrity packed selfie taken at the Oscars. In a recent article on YourTango.com, where she is one of their Experts, Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and prolific published author, made the case for the selfie. While many believe the selfie is a narcissist act performed by self-centered megalomaniacs, Dr. Holstein believes the opposite.

Dr. Holstein recently examined the attraction of the selfie personally. Her husband believed she was exhibiting narcissistic behavior. Her daughter questioned her sanity. But the experience brought the subject into perspective for her.

"It got me thinking," Dr Holstein stated. "Why would I take pictures of myself on vacation on Block Island? Why would I start snapping photos later that summer, on my way to visit my college roommates in Connecticut, and in again Grand Central Station when I changed trains?"

"Why? Because I felt so alive that day, anticipating great talks with dear friends. Why? Because I liked the black and white sundress I had on. Why? Because Grand Central Station made me feel young, vital and as if I was on an adventure. Why? Because no one else would bother to record my adventure. Why? Because I felt able to take charge of an important part of my life; that I no longer had to give it over to someone else."

"If I want a visual memory of how I look and feel on any given day, I can now make that image for myself. I don't have to ask or explain, or feel vain for requesting a snapshot from someone else. Think about it: No one explains why they keep a diary, so why should taking photos be any different? This ritual is part of my diary: a part that technology has finally made possible."

"So today, camera phone in hand, I stand proud and announce: I support the selfie."

Valentine's Day For Divorced Women - Positive Psychologist Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein Offers Tips

As a Positive Psychologist and author of a romance novel entitled 'Around Every Corner, Romance & Mystery . . .', Dr. Holstein believes it is important for divorced women to put themselves first and to develop and utilize their own unique talents

A recent article on the Chicago Tribune's website entitled "Coping with Valentine's Day without a Valentine" offered a number of tips to help those who are divorced get through Valentine's Day with a minimum of stress. This is important, as a huge percentage of women are divorced. While Valentine's Day can cause one's stress level to rise and bring back feeling of loss and grief, Dr. Holstein believes it is important to instead see Valentine's Day as an opportunity to take steps forward, rather than looking backward to the past.  She suggests some further ideas that a divorced woman can do for herself on Valentine's Day and every day, so that life has less pain and more pleasure.

"Believe it or not," Dr. Holstein stated, "one of the gifts of divorce is often a chance for a woman to come home to herself, emotionally and developing her true potential. When we are part of a couple, we merge ourselves on many levels.  For many women that means giving into what our man likes to do and what his needs are.  Fine, within reason in a great relationship, but this tendency to 'take me, I'm yours' can often lead to a woman not fully developing herself."

"Now with divorce, a woman has the opportunity to put herself first.  She has the time to really get to know herself.  She is well advised to work on answering the following questions:"

What do you like to do?
What do you not want to do ever again?
What gives you pleasure?
What annoys you?
What interests do you have or want to develop?
What were your passions and interests before you were married or in what seemed to be a permanent relationship?
Can you take any of them back?
When are you happiest?

"These questions may not be so easy to answer, but as she gets going with them she will see something wonderful happening.  She will begin to see herself returning in full bloom.  The girl, the young woman that she was, the woman that she is now, without the stress and burden of a relationship that was not working, now will be able to continue to develop and utilize her special talents and potential."

Dr. Holstein even has an assignment to make Valentine's Day for the divorced go more smoothly. "Do three things for yourself on Valentine's Day.  Not what your ex would have picked. I want you to decide is right for you.  You may want to get together with some girlfriends and eat chocolates as you watch some favorite reruns. You may want to treat yourself to a massage, or a facial.  Maybe you want to sit on your bed and read a new romance novel.  Whatever you choose, make sure it is your choice as you come home to yourself!"
