Jerry Sandusky Sentencing - Author Jeanne McElvaney Offers Insight Into The Long Term Effects On Victims
As Jerry Sandusky is sentenced for his crimes, it is important to remember the long-term effects of his sexual molestation. For most of us, the memories may fade. Not so for the survivors of his abuse.
"Ongoing research makes it clear," stated author Jeanne McElvaney, "survivors of sexual abuse will more likely experience depression, addictions, sleep and eating disorders, and diminished socioeconomic potential. They have an increased chance of suicide. Their immune function is affected. Low self esteem, intimacy, and relationship instability are legacies of sexual abuse. Survivors often face issues related to anger, guilt, loss, trust, and personal power."
In the traditions of Sandra Butler and Louise Armstrong before her, Ms. McElvaney serves as a voice for victims of childhood sexual abuse. Her book, 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story' is a gripping and powerful novel that turns the world upside down, as readers witness innocence celebrated and violated. The book has been called a 'tremendous contribution to childhood trauma literature.' The novel is currently listed as a Finalist by Readers Favorite in the Women's Fiction category.
"I wrote 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story' because I wanted to take the reader on a journey of insight," McElvaney continued, "so they could understand dissociated trauma memories - how they pull a person out of everyday reality so that person can survive the moment. I wanted readers to know how our minds work to protect us, but also leave us with memories we can't recall even though they continue driving our choices, feelings, and beliefs."
Sexual abuse is a crime most often kept hidden by secrecy and silence.
* “ In the United States, society’s historical attitude about the sexual victimization of children can generally be summed up in one word: denial.” (Kenneth Lanning, Former Supervisory Special Agent, FBI).
* “ Childhood molestation is one of the most under-reported crimes – only 1-10% are ever disclosed.” (FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin).
"Shame and guilt keep us from stepping forward," continued McElvaney, "if outright threats don’t. Until parents recognize that caring, dedicated, nice, hard-working pillars of the community can also be abusers, they provide a shield for the molesters and make it almost impossible for children to tell their truth and believe it will be heard."
McElvaney says, “If a child finds the courage to tell their secret, I would have every adult remember this statistic: children are telling the truth 99.5% of the time.” (TAALK)
The comfortable and prevailing belief that the typical child molester is someone we don’t know is slowly changing. The truth is, those who sexually abuse our youth look and act like the people we know. Though we would like to believe these incidents are rare and far between, McElvaney believes this case will help people realize, perpetrators are active over many years.
* “ The typical offender begins molesting by the age of 15 and molests an average of 117 youngsters.” (Dr. Gene Abel, National Institute of Mental Health Study)
* “ 77.9% of convicted sex offenders are sent back to prison within two years.” (California Department of Corrections)
A recent reviewer and therapist stated 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story' is "a resource as much as it is a novel. Dry, academic explanations of this condition are unable to touch the complex, nostalgic, and deeply moving way this author has been able to take the reader directly into the depths of this state of mind."

Jerry Sandusky And Monsignor Lynn Found Guilty - Author Jeanne McElvaney Offers An Insightful Journey Into The World Of Childhood Sexual Abuse
It’s only been thirty years since Judith Herman's newly published book labeled sexual abuse a crime, challenging social belief that it was harmless. Survivors began telling their stories. For the first time in history, social attitudes began supporting the victims of perpetrators.
Jerry Sandusky's recent conviction for child abuse and Monsignor Lynn’s conviction for child endangerment are another step in the right direction if we want to stop a crime that thrives in secrecy and silence. Jeanne McElvaney's book, 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story', gives us a powerful glimpse of child abuse - from the victim's perspective.
"It’s easy to forget," Jeanne McElvaney stated, "that sexual abuse is about disempowering the victim. Sex is the weapon. As the young adults in the Sandusky trial came forward to testify, they had to overcome the shame that is inherent in this kind of abuse. They not only gave evidence, they placed the shame where it belongs."
Rape was not considered a crime in all 50 states until the 1970’s, after The National Organization for Women (NOW) initiated rape reform legislation. By the late 70’s most mental health professionals were still unwilling to question old assumptions that child sexual abuse was rare and seductive children were the problem. Sandra Butler's book, 'Conspiracy of Silence', brought credibility to these issues. Louise Armstrong wrote, 'Kiss Daddy Goodnight', and broke the silence of survivors. 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story' is a gripping and powerful story that turns the world upside down, as readers witness innocence celebrated and violated. The book has been called a 'tremendous contribution to childhood trauma literature.' The book is currently listed as a Finalist by Readers Favorite in the Women's Fiction category.
"I wrote 'Spirit Unbroken: Abby's Story' because I wanted to take the reader on a journey of insight," McElvaney continued, "so they could understand dissociated trauma memories - how they pull a person out of everyday reality so that person can survive the moment. I wanted readers to know how our minds work to protect us, but also leaves us with memories we can't recall even though they continue driving our choices, feelings, and beliefs."

Dry, academic explanations of this condition are unable to touch the complex, nostalgic, and deeply moving way this author has been able to take the reader directly into the depths of this state of mind."
"I also hope to create awareness," McElvaney continued, "that abusers, as we have recently seen, are not one-dimensional bad guys. They are not strangers - 90% are someone the child and family know. 1of 4 women and 1 of 6 men are survivors of sexual abuse - that's 39 million of us."

Books in the self help genre offer guidance in many different areas: stress management, unhealthy relationships, career success, goal achievement, developing self confidence and self worth - the list goes on and on. Many of us have gone a step further and have been involved in talk therapies of one kind or another. But often neither books or talk therapy produce the results we desperately seek. 'Secrets to Emotional Wealth' transcends the 19th century approach by mastering the language of six core feelings and their effective application to subconscious mind to achieve a happy and successful life.
'Secrets To Emotional Wealth' leads the reader to identify six core feelings. It allows one to discern the true meaning of these emotions, helping to eliminate doubt and confusion, and it guides the reader to stop using reason to resolve emotions. Hence the reader will eliminate endless mental analysis in trying to make some sense of the world and can overcome some of the 'paralysis of analysis'.
"I wrote this book," stated Dr. Casey, "because I realized that many people are suffering emotionally and yet don't know how to stop it. Personal dissatisfaction, failing relationships and repeated self destructive behaviors are the end result of never learning the art of emotional skills needed to create the kind of life they always desired. I believe that anyone can learn these skills to transform their lives from a sense of self-doubt, confusion and unhappiness to creating a path of self-fulfillment and joy."
Emotional Mastery™ is the ideal self-mastery solution for anyone who wants to benefit from:
* Personal Growth and Empowerment

My Body, My Earth by Ruby Gibson - Alternative Health Therapy For Sexual Abuse, PTSD And Others
Somatic Archaeology self help method used with success in treating many forms of emotional trauma
Ruby Gibson, a 28 year veteran therapist and national educator has broken new ground with her latest release, My Body, My Earth – The Practice of Somatic Archaeology. This new book details how one can achieve a state of physical, emotional and mental health using the Somatic Archaeology protocol.
Somatic Archaeology is a generational healing technique. Somatic refers to the body while the word archaeology refers to the excavation of the remains of our ancestors.
“In addition to inheriting the physical features of our family,” stated Ms. Gibson, “we also adopt their behaviors, beliefs, traditions, and creative attributes, as well as addictions, psychological issues, and relational dynamics. Because the experiences that form these patterns are established long before we are born, we do not always consciously remember the origins of what we have adopted."
"This 'historical amnesia' is the cause of most suffering. When we experience a symptom as painful, we are taught to suppress or ignore it. Doing this for long periods of time aggravates the symptom, establishing chronic, generational, physical and emotional conditions. Fortunately, our body has a memory too, and through Somatic Archaeology we can access the origins that impact our life story, and hence heal ourselves by re-creating a new story, creating spiritual well-being, emotional optimism, and physical freedom. Somatic Archaeology then provides the tools to excavate your personal history in your physical body for healing and awareness of generational patterns.”
According to Ms. Gibson, Somatic Archaeology is beneficial for anyone seeking a deeper healing and understanding of the cause and effect of their life experiences, relationship patterns, familial predispositions, physical symptoms, and psychological attitudes and beliefs. This type of somatic remembering also allows for greater spiritual understanding and attunement.
Ms. Gibson's present work includes providing complementary and alternative healing services to military familes and wounded soldiers with combat stress and traumatic brain injuries as Assistant Director of The Bridge Project, a 21 day immersion program for transitioning warriors. She also offers youth outreach programs through her non-profit group, Freedom Lodge, which includes working with children in military families and children who have lost a loved one fighting a wild land fire.
Ms. Gibson also offers a 200 hour certification program in Somatic Archaeology for healthcare professionals and therapists. The technique can easily be woven into any other healing modality. She also offers introductory weekend classes.
“Of course,” stated Ms. Gibson, “My Body, My Earth, The Practice of Somatic Archaeology is a good place for anyone to begin. The book provides a step-by-step process to unearth the patterns of one's past and reduce generational amnesia, which allows anyone to begin to create positive change. Visit my website for a list of graduates, or seek a professional trained in any form of somatic therapy such as Brainspotting TM, or Somatic Experiencing.”
Ms. Gibson will appear on The Authors Show Radio (www.theauthorsshow.com) in a featured interview through June 4, 2009. She will also appear on The Authors Show TV version in a featured interview on June 1, 2009 (www.authorswebtv.com).
Ruby Gibson a certified somatic therapist and national educator. She has worked for over 28 years in the alternative healing field. The focus of Gibson's work has been helping children and adults reconcile trauma, abuse, addictions, and chronic pain. These include post-traumatic stress syndromes, traumatic brain injuries, grief work, and gender issues. She incorporates aromatherapy, breathwork and Brainspotting TM. She is the former Director of the Colorado School of Healing Arts, and is the developer of Somatic Archaeology. Ms. Gibson is available for interview and can be reached at the address below.
