A.W. Daniels, Author of 'Genetically Privileged' Issues Statement on Genetic Engineering

The government in the UK is considering approval of genetically engineered ‘3 parent’ embryos. The embryos would have genetic material from one father and two mothers. Daniels believes the implications for society, now and in the future, are staggering

A recent article on LifeNews.com stated that The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in the United Kingdom is considering the approval of procedures that would allow nuclear transfer technology. This could result in embryos that may be free from defects. A.W. Daniels, author of 'Genetically Privileged' sees a number of game changing scenarios that might results from such a move.

The 'three-parent embryo' is only the beginning," Daniels stated, "and the majority of the arguments presented here, aside from the prevention of genetic disease, fall under the pretext of morality and ethics in fertilization procedures. To assume experimental genetic manipulation is not being conducted, either privately or under government sponsored programs clandestinely, may be overlooking the obvious. The future benefits to be possibly gained are far too great to go unexplored by some."

Those future benefits, as well as the social implications, are the subjects addressed in the first of a series of novels by Daniels entitled "Genetically Privileged."

“Besides the elimination of genetic defects," Daniels continued, "what other special abilities can be gained through the use of genetic enhancement? Superior intelligence and strength could be only the beginning. How will society react to those that are genetically privileged and for what purposes will those in charge of such experimentation use the enhanced progeny? Furthermore, how will the 'special children' born of such processes react to a society they may deem inferior?”

These are just some of the questions speculated upon in 'Genetically Privileged'. In the storyline, nature disappoints a young couple's aspirations of parenthood. They turn to a series of fertility experts and finally an old friend. Their friend, as it turns out, has been modifying the human genome for a government project and the couple becomes entangled in a web of deceit. ‘Genetically Privileged’ is a socially relevant read, addressing the advancements of technology and science as Daniels speculates on the social impact of those developments.

‘Genetically Privileged’ has received numerous favorable reviews. Recently Midwest Book Review stated, "Genetically Privileged is an insightful spin of science fiction exploring genetic engineering, recommended." Kirkus Review stated, "Daniels skillfully develops a sense of threat. An inventive, intriguing novel. Animated plot and thoughtful questions posed about genetic manipulation.”
