Does short-term thinking dominate?

Finally, it is important to give some concentrated thought to what you consider the most important issues that you will face in the next couple of years and the speed at which change will come. Your speed and the ability to set the pace will be a direct result of your ability to not be bogged down.

As a child, we went on vacations, but not elaborate vacations. I grew up in New Jersey, so our trips were simple—like going to Hershey, Pennsylvania. You saw the chocolate being made as if the factory was under glass. You saw the workers as they went about their responsibilities with great pride and joy, as if they were the only ones in the factory. What also left an impression on me after all these years was touring the factory and seeing the chocolate being made by hardworking local people from beginning to end.

Years later, my significant event, aha moment, happened when I was managing a facility in Bedford Park, Illinois. As I was touring my own operation, I realized the confidence the Hershey organization must have had in their people as literally thousands of people walked through their factory each day while they made their famous chocolate bars. I stopped and wondered, can a customer walk through my operation unannounced and still be impressed with my organization? I asked myself, “Do I run a Hershey factory? Can my customers walk through my operations anytime, and would they be proud of what they saw?”

From that day forward, I challenged myself and my staff to inspire those in their care to be as confident in their people and operations as Hershey is in theirs. If they could do so, their customers would enjoy the same experience in one of their facilities—confident and excited to see their products are in our hands. As a leader, regardless of your area of responsibility, you have your own “Hershey factory.” You need to make sure your customers are equally proud of what they see in your facilities, people, and solutions. From that significant event forward, I combined that vision and the empowerment of my people, who felt valued in everything they did, to create their Hershey experience.

It’s like the old saying, “You don’t want to walk through the kitchen in a restaurant.” I wanted to start bringing everybody through the kitchen. Every year, I would send my leaders a Hershey bar and my Hershey aha moment story to remind them of this standard.

On a personal note, a defining moment was when I got my job at UPS. I was hired to be a part-timer unloading and loading trailers. My dad, who had come from Italy at fourteen, sat me down. He was a great person, rest his soul, and very straightforward. He said, “Look, two things I want to share with you. I don’t know what this UPS does, but listen, whatever they ask you to do, say yes and thank you. Then learn your job and learn some more because the minute you think you know everything, they’ll pass you right by.”

UPS had a promotion-from-within policy, and every time there was a new opportunity, regardless of where it was, I would think, Am I the right guy for this job? Then I would remember my dad’s words over my shoulder: “Just say yes and thank you,” and I would turn to my wife and say, “Hey, hon, let’s pack the kids up. We’re going.” That mindset was significant and impactful for me growing up.

Later, I realized a significant lesson from this experience. It was clear UPS had more confidence in me than I had in myself. As a leader, I realized you often need to have faith and confidence in your people, and many times it is before they’re ready for it. They may not have the skills, confidence, or expertise at that point, so you believe in them until they’re ready to believe in themselves. You bridge that gap of confidence and knowledge until they reach the point where they can say, “Okay, I’ve got this.” Then, as a leader, you step back and become their cheerleader because they don’t need to be over-managed; they’re ready to run.

Top Motivational Speaker Rocky Romanella Describes How To Ensure A New Manager Makes A Successful Transition Into Leadership

Below are some examples of expectations. Your list will be your list, and your expectations must be clearly communicated and outlined to them by you.

They are brand ambassadors for their personal brand and the organization's brand.

They get their results through others.

They confer with their partners and teammates in other departments such as legal, finance, HR, and those they work with on a regular basis.

They will need to become familiar with company policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations which will protect their people, the company, and their reputation.

You aspire for them to become a learning machine, and they lead by example in their desire to be The Best, The Brightest, Most Informed, and the Best-educated person they can be.

Secondly, as the leader, you will have to believe in them until they have the confidence, knowledge, and success to believe in themselves. You bridge this knowledge and confidence gap through your help, support, and belief in them. Your belief in them, until they are ready to believe in themselves, is often the difference-maker in the success of a new promotion.

Finally, as in all we do as the leader, “we set the tone from the top!” To set that leadership standard, you should consider setting and articulating your Leadership Expectations to the organization. These clearly defined expectations, combined with your values and workplace policies, all provide guidelines for you to model "What Exceptional Leadership Looks Like.”

Now Is The Time To Ask: Should I Stay Or Should I Go In 2024? Says Top Motivational Speaker And Best Selling Author Rocky Romanella

In this newsletter, we answer the question, "Do We Stay, or Do We Go?" with the view of "Going!" I would like to talk about the importance of the strategic questions to ask yourself and your team. These will be the foundational pieces, and how you answer these questions will impact your strategy, vision, and approach that will be executed through the 100-Day Plan and beyond.

Here are some examples of the questions you can ask yourself or your team as you begin the implementation process of the 100-Day Plan.

   * Am I, (are we), a business and/or leader who initially went through years of successive growth but have now reached a standstill?

   * Are we in a critical year of our strategic plan?

   * From our experience, do we have the right approach on how to boost growth and “restart our revenue engines”?

Another soul-searching question to ask yourself and your team prior to the implementation of the 100-Day Plan is, "Do We Have Organizational Agility?"

   * We know, respect, and leverage the company culture and assets.

   * We lead integrated change within a business unit to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.

   * We utilize teams intentionally and appropriately to focus leaders on building an enterprise that creates profit and generates business with the ultimate objective of delivering an attractive return on shareholder investment.

   * We aim to develop leaders who can "see around corners" to anticipate changes in market conditions and proactively position the company for future competitive advantage.

   * Finally, we must constantly remind leaders that the company expects sound judgment from those in whom it places trust and that this should be demonstrated to all through their actions.

Traditionally, a new year gives us an opportunity for a fresh start, but there are times during the year when we need a jump start. However, like New Year's resolutions, the best-laid business plans can easily be forgotten when we get caught up in the day-to-day activities that require us to put out fires and wrestle with ongoing business challenges. Armed with the answers to these questions and an approach you have vetted with your team, the 100-Day Plan is the vehicle, the blueprint for an implementation process that is both powerful in approach and elegant in its simplicity. It is your answer to the question, "Do we go?"

The 100-Day Plan is based on my concept of Balanced Leadership. The three components in Balanced Leadership are your company’s customers, employees, and stakeholders. All of this is built on a framework that puts less emphasis on "doing things right" and instead focuses on "doing the right thing" for those three groups.
