How Meditation, Mindfulness And Kindness Transform The Lives Of Prisoners - Doug Carnine's Latest Book Offers Readers An Inside Look At A Revolutionary Paradigm Shift
While it was not always considered a hot topic, the media today is filled with articles about how meditation, mindfulness and kindness can significantly affect and, in some cases, utterly transform the lives and experiences of those incarcerated in prisons and jails worldwide.
NBC recently presented a piece entitled "Prison Meditation Program Helps Inmates Rebuild Minds, Restart Lives". Amy Maclin offered a piece on Oprah.com entitled, "Why Meditation Is Becoming So Popular In Prisons." Lisa Rapaport's piece on Reuters.com was titled, "Meditation linked to lower stress among prison inmates." CNN.com carried a piece by Stephanie Chen titled, "Prison inmates go Zen to deal with life behind bars." More articles can be found on the websites of Huffington Post, NPR, The Washington Post and others. There are hundreds more.
In addition, organizations like the Prison Mindfulness Institute and the David Lynch Foundation focus on showing prisoners how to create a sense of "freedom behind bars".
Why all the fanfare about meditation and mindfulness in prison? Because it works like nothing else. Doug Carnine, author of 'Saint Badass: Personal Transcendence in Tucker Max Hell,' presents the proof in his highly praised, must-read book.
Carnine has personally witnessed the life-changing benefits meditation and mindfulness produce for those who are incarcerated in jails and prisons. The book is a story spanning seven years’ worth of letters and Carnine’s growing friendships between Roy Tester and three other prisoners.
In their own words, the prisoners describe the crises they face including disabling illness, a brain tumor, a prison gang attack, family betrayal, medical abuse and harsh punishments for mild offenses. Each prisoner in his own way achieves transcendence through his crisis using mindfulness, meditation and the blessings of kindness. Readers are stunned to see the destructive forces of an abusive childhood, a criminal adulthood, and a life without parole in prison result in their incongruously continuous acts of kindness. Their voices are raw and honest, and at times inspiring.
"Mindfulness is necessary but not sufficient to transform both prisoners and prison staff," Carnine stated. "Mindfulness clears our mind of worry about the past and anxiety about the future. But what then? The purpose of mindfulness is not primarily to make us feel better but to make us better able to act with kindness, which is the greatest win-win in the world. The recipient of kindness benefits. And those who act with kindness are happier, healthier, have more loving relationships and live longer. One of my co-authors, Roy, murdered his parents after being sexually abused for years by this father. Yet Roy risked his life to prevent the murder of a child molester who had just entered prison. Kindness overcame Roy’s hate of child molesters."
Another of Carnine’s books, 'How Love Wins: The Power of Mindful Kindness', follows in the same vein. Most of us recognize that being kinder and more present would not only improve our own lives and the lives of our loved ones, but also strengthen our communities. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that both living mindfully and being kind to others offer a host of benefits -- from stronger relationships to longer life. Yet even if we truly care and are motivated to change, we find that old habits keep us from achieving our goal of increasing our kindness and improving our relationships.
In 'How Love Wins', Carnine offers another path. In this simple but powerful guide, leading the reader through a 12-step process of transformation, opening a toolbox of skills and techniques that anyone can use to live more fully in the moment and be more kind to themselves and others. A lay Buddhist minister who has worked with prisoners and hospice patients, Carnine provides a clear path that will enable almost anyone to build a mindfully kind life -- and make it stick.
Carnine was recently named one of 50 great writers you should be reading in the ‘50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading’ Book Awards'. He was chosen from a field of hundreds of authors through a public voting process.
Readers and reviewers have praised his work. Geri Larkin, Founding Teacher of Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple and author of 'Stumbling Toward Enlightenment' said, “Saint Badass isn’t simply about the transformative power of sincere spiritual practice. It demonstrates the impact of our practice on our environment and the people around us. These men have many reasons to be filled with hate, to be violent, and to be completely shut down given the lives they are leading in the bowels of the hell realm of our society, our prisons. And yet. They transform. One of them glows in the dark, I swear. Reading the book gave me hope.”
Duana Welch, PhD, author of 'Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do' stated, “This powerful book takes any of us from a life of 'me' to 'we,' from isolation to connection and love. In a world where kindness is so needed yet so little understood, How Love Wins is a must-read.”

About Douglas Carnine:
Douglas Carnine, a professor emeritus from the University of Oregon, began his pursuit of scientific research, instructional design, Buddhism and martial arts when he was 21. His academic career focused on teaching at-risk students and led to him receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council for Exceptional Children.
After retiring, working with men convicted of murder and serving as a hospice volunteer made him curious about the importance of kindness. After reviewing the research on kindness, he decided to devote his writing and his advocacy to making the importance of mindful kindness more prominent. The resulting project is his website, Feedkindness.com, along with his books, ‘How Love Wins’ and ‘Saint Badass.’

Award Winning Author Doug Carnine's Latest Book Presents Clear Evidence Of The Life Changing Power Of Mindfulness, Meditation And Kindness For Prisoners
A recent article on Oprah Winfrey's website by Amy Maclin entitled "Why Meditation Is Becoming So Popular In Prisons" discloses a few powerful and insightful facts from Kate Crisp, executive director of the Prison Mindfulness Institute. In that article, Crisp says she believes many inmates land in prison after an act of pure impulse. She, like so many others, knows that mindfulness training can help.
Meditation and mindfulness training can help with much more than just impulse control of course. It can also teach prisoners how to manage anxiety, reduce stress and depression, and can improve conflict resolution skills. Mindfulness training and meditation can also dramatically impact self transformation efforts and personal development.
Doug Carnine, PhD, author of 'Saint Badass: Personal Transcendence in Tucker Max Hell,' has personally witnessed the life-changing benefits meditation and mindfulness produce for those who are incarcerated in jails and prisons. The book is a story spanning seven years’ worth of letters and Carnine’s growing friendships between Roy Tester and three other prisoners.

Readers are stunned to see the destructive forces of an abusive childhood, a criminal adulthood, and a life without parole in prison result in their incongruously continuous acts of kindness. Their voices are raw and honest, and at times inspiring.
"RJ offers the most unusual example of transformation through mindful kindness, Carnine stated. "RJ, who confessed to me that he was a child molestation addict with 100 victims, would soon be released on parole in Arkansas and feared he would molest a child. At his request I tracked down the the prosecutor’s office that will result in him being transferred directly to a prison in Washington, where he committed most of his molestations. His wish is being granted. He will never be free to molest another child."
Another of Carnine’s books, 'How Love Wins: The Power of Mindful Kindness', follows in the same vein. Most of us recognize that being kinder and more present would not only improve our own lives and the lives of our loved ones, but also strengthen our communities. Miracles Are Not Always Supernatural Events Says Donna Louis, Multi-Award-Winning Author Of 'Miracles Of Direction'
A heart warming story on the Oprah Winfrey website, in the "Unbelievable True Stories That Will Give You Goosebumps" section, presented a tale of a young lady whose mother, having been given just six months to live, had dreamed of seeing her daughter in the perfect wedding dress. Though no wedding day in the foreseeable future, the two women went shopping and found that perfect dress anyway. The young lady donned the dress and had pictures taken of the two of them standing side by side.
Just a few months later, the mother was gone, and, with that, the story seemed to be over. However, a short time later the members of her church, who had "exclaimed over the bridal pictures," donated the money necessary to make a down payment on the very dress her mother wanted her to own. Now, when the wedding does take place, she will have a picture that she will cherish forever.
"God sees everything and knows everything," Louis stated. "Even though things we desire are not completed on the time table we want God always shows up on time and does what is the best thing for us. The above story is such a profound one in that the mother’s wish was attained to see her daughter in the wedding dress. The mother knew if this feat could be accomplished her daughter finding the right man to marry was already solidified by God."
Louis' first book, ‘Miracles of Direction, Miracles of Conquest, Miracles of Provision, Miracles of Purpose', explores biblical miracles that took place while Jesus was here on earth. She then references with miracles that take place on a daily basis in the modern world. She separates these miracles into four categories and presents insightful examples of each type, taken directly from the Bible. She knows that miracles happen every day, even today, and offers readers a message of hope and faith.
Louis knows her subject well, as she has personally experienced three miracles. As the result of those life-altering experiences, she began an in-depth study of some of Christianity's most well-documented miracles. In her book, she attempts to expand upon and explain both the purpose and the direction of those miracles.
Donna was chosen as a winner in the 2015, 2016 and the 2017 '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' awards contest. ‘Miracles' has also received rave reviews from readers. One review called it "amazing, uplifting and inspirational". Another stated, "I was profoundly impressed by the writing."
Louis has also announced the upcoming release of her latest Christian book, 'Book of Proverbs - Wisdom vs Wilderness'.
'Book of Proverbs – Wisdom vs. Wilderness' delves into the need for gaining greater wisdom. The primary purpose of the Book of Proverbs is to teach wisdom to everyone. The Book of Proverbs provides intellectual depth and insights and exceptional wisdom on how to live a fortunate and tranquil life by honoring and respecting God as omnipotent.
'Book of Proverbs – Wisdom vs. Wilderness' discusses all chapters in Proverbs 1-31 and brings insight, clarity, and basic meaning to several verses in each chapter to solidify why wisdom is essential and mandatory in life, so readers can live a blessed life versus living a life that is destitute, empty, and obsolete. The new book is scheduled for release in 2018.
Due to recent events in Parkland FL, Donna will be donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of her books to March For Our Lives. She is also now making her book available to both hurricane relief organizations and Christian organizations to be used as a fundraising tool. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the e-books may be donated to those organizations that qualify. Churches and other charitable organizations are welcome to contact Donna using the information below to discuss the details of the program.

Times Up, The Golden Globe Awards, The Oprah Speech And The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Are All Forms Of The Truth For Women States Filmmaker and Positive Psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein
Times Up. #MeToo. The Golden Globe Awards. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The Oprah speech. What do all of these things have in common? They all represent a move toward the truth. This has been the message of Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein for many years. Dr. Holstein is an author and a multi-award winning filmmaker who produces books and selfie films under the umbrella concept of The Truth For Girls.
"Rachel Brosnahan who plays the 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and was awarded the Golden Globe Award spoke about how important it is remember all the women, who lived silent lives in terms of the public, but who had great and amazing stories to be told," Dr. Holstein stated. "As a psychologist and a filmmaker I agree 100%. Mrs. Maisel, played fabulously by Rachel, is a great character with strength, resilience, opportunities and a comedic talent. However, the truth is so many women are haunted by limited educational opportunities, dysfunctional families of origin, sexual exploitation, and hundreds of combinations of factors that make it impossible to come into their own as talented women, not haunted by exploitation or disappointment in terms of meeting career and life goals.
"My life work as a positive psychologist is to help women and girls of all ages and stages of life to not be in any sort of mental bondage. I'm thrilled that #MeToo and Time's Up have come to be. Let the truth come out when one person's power and status has been used to diminish another.
"Sexual misconduct can happen anywhere: in the home, the office, the neighborhood, etc. Where to start? I start with girls, tweens and teens. There is the normal hormonal drive as we leave childhood behind to experience sexual feelings and thoughts. Kids have crushes, kids think they are in love. Kids today are at risk. The times we live in don't always help. Social media can make a girl miserable, even suicidal as she is taunted or bullied. Not only are kids dealing with the angst of new hormone levels, but also alcohol and drugs. And don't forget the ordinary but serious other conflicts kids face: moving to a new neighborhood, siblings fighting, divorce of parents, academic issues, friend drama, etc.
"How do I approach all of the above as a positive psychologist and a filmmaker? By making films that are entertaining, poignant and humorous, yet contain many issues that we all need to confront and better handle. The great thing about film is it is a universal language. In 'The Truth, A Short Film' the girl falls in love and suffers with her intense feelings. You are sure to recognize some of her feelings and frustrations. In 'Falling in Love, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film' the girl deals with intense emotions, ranging from joy to depressive feelings. She confronts a deeply embarrassing situation and figures out how to rise about the dilemma. In 'Secrets, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film' the protagonist realizes that secrets haunt her family life. But she also realizes that she has incredible strength. Now I'm finishing 'Help From Beyond, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film' in which the girl, now 15, confronts drugs, alcohol, bullying, secrets in the family, spiritual hunger and more.
"Each of my films opens the door to discussion, guidance, problem solving, better communication between parents and children, and positive change. We all must share the task of bringing up girls (of course boys also) who are safe and guided to rise to their full potential, strong and safe enough to always tell the truth and live a truth connects them with their potential, dignity and purpose.
"The most exciting news is that 'Secrets, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film' has been chosen for a screening at the NewFilmmakers Program at 6:00PM on January 24th, 2018 in Manhattan at the Anthology Film Archives. This is a fabulous opportunity, a chance to network, meet and greet and have 'Secrets' viewed in New York City. NewFilmmakers has a long history of show casing non traditional filmmakers and their work. That certainly fits #SelfieFilms!
"For more history on my Selfie concepts in Filmmaking please see www.newshortfilmthetruth.com.
"For more understanding of THE ENCHANTED SELF(R) and developing one's potential to the fullest, see my book THE ENCHANTED SELF, A Positive Therapy."
Dr. Holstein is now accepting requests to post selfie films on a website devoted to selfie films, SelfieFilmmakers.com. The selfie filmmakers can submit their films for consideration at the site.
The focus of the site is to honor different facets of the Selfie Film phenomenon. It is a place to explore what makes these films so inviting psychologically and emotionally. The site will host a variety of people who are the creators of this new wave of filmmaking. All ages covering a variety of topics. From the depths of our souls to the lightest touch of humor, a new wave of filmmaker explore being human, sharing thoughts and feelings in new ways via smart phones.
Holstein's short films have won numerous awards and accolades. 'The Truth, A Short Film' premiered at the Garden State Film Festival and its song, 'On The Edge of Something New' won the award as the best pop song of 2016. The short two minute film by Dr. Holstein, 'The Truth, A Short Short Film', premiered at FilmOneFest in July of 2016. 'Falling in Love, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film, is detailed in a new ebook: 'A Selfie Film - Falling In Love' by Dr. Holstein. This ebook presents issues and stories behind the creation of Dr. Holstein's "selfie films", which utilize cutting edge New Media technology. Topics and questions for discussion can be used by a parent and a child, or a group of hundreds as universal subjects of growing up and handling tough issues are presented.
'Falling in Love' was an official selection at the Brightside Tavern Film Festival in Jersey City in early March, nominated for several awards, including 'Best Experimental Film' and 'Best New Jersey Short'. It came in second place for 'Best New Jersey Short'.

Virgin Mary Statue Offers Hope To Hurricane Harvey Survivors, More Proof Of Modern Day Miracles Says Donna Louis, Author Of 'Miracles of Direction'
A recent story on KRISTV offered proof that miracles still occur today, not just in ancient times as some believe. A family in Robstown, TX lost their entire home to Hurricane Harvey. The only items that survived the destruction were two statues of the Virgin Mary. One of the residents stated that she was overwhelmed to realize that the only things to survive were "holy things". Is that proof of miracles? Donna Louis, author of ‘Miracles of Direction, Miracles of Conquest, Miracles of Provision and Miracles of Purpose' believes it is. She understands that miracles are not just found in the Bible. Modern day miracles occur all over the world, every day.
"And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. - Deuteronomy 31:8. I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron. - Isaiah 45:2. But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31. The story of Mary The Mother of God shows what miracles are all about. The miraculous conception of her conceiving her son while she was a virgin is why she is called The Blessed Virgin Mary. This family is in store for exceeding and abundant blessings in their lives because the survival of the statues proves that. We should all expect miracles every day," Louis stated.
Louis' book explores biblical miracles that took place while Jesus was here on earth. She then references with miracles that take place on a daily basis in the modern world. She separates these miracles into four categories and presents insightful example of each type, taken directly from the Bible. She knows that miracles happen every day, even today, and offers readers a message of hope and faith.

Another stated, "I was profoundly impressed by the writing." She will be one of the featured authors on The Authors Show September 29 through October 1, 2017.
Donna is now making her book available to organizations to be used as a fundraising tool. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the e-books may be donated to those organizations that qualify. Small Miracles Are God's Way Of Speaking To Us Says Donna Louis, Author Of 'Miracles of Direction'
Louis' book, ‘Miracles of Direction’, is an in-depth study of some of Christianity's most well-documented miracles. Louis has made the book available to Christian charities as a fundraising tool.
A recent story on the Oprah website titled "Unbelievable True Stories That Will Give You Goosebumps" presented a number of submissions, some of which could be called small miracles. In one of those stories, a young girl was taken by her father to buy a watch. After looking at many possibilities and rejecting them all, one caught her eye. Being mysteriously drawn to the design of the watch, she chose that one, to the great surprise of her father. Once home, he opened an envelope from his desk and revealed a watch. The watch belonged to the young girl's grandfather, given as a present by her grandmother nearly 80 years before. The watch was a nearly perfect twin of the watch the girl chose.
While some of us believe only water turning into wine and people rising from the dead qualify as miracles, that is simply not true. Synchronicity is a form of miraculous event; the everyday reminders that we are all connected at the soul level, across time and space. Spirit interacts with mind when we are willing to let Spirit show us that everything is one complete, perfect synchronous whole creation. In that we have the freedom to choose, we can see these events as random chance in a chaotic universe, or as reminders of the wonder of God's creation.
Donna Louis, author of 'Miracles of Direction, Miracles of Conquest, Miracles of Provision and Miracles of Purpose' knows that miracles are not just found in the Bible. Modern day miracles occur all over the world, every day.
'Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you unless indeed you are disqualified? 2 Corinthians 13:5.' "Jesus Christ makes his home inside of each and every one of us and that is why miracles occur every day," Louis stated. "Everything does not have to be grandiose like the parting of the Red Sea, we just need to keep a watchful eye and believe."

As a dog trainer, personal coach and therapist, she assists non-profit organizations in creating and implementing therapy/service dog programs in schools, churches, community centers, prisons and other businesses.
"In my book, 'The Alphatude Attitude'", continued Ms. Moore, "I talk about how the human component, particularly the feelings of fear, anger and frustration, influence a dog's behavior. The human learning to control their emotions is an important part of this process. I always tell my clients that their dogs need leadership more than love. ‘Alphatude’ is the leadership attitude expressed in a way that the dog understands. Dogs don’t really understand abstractions like words or emotions. Dogs understand concrete communication: tone, body language and facial expression. Being chosen as the next TV star would allow me to bring this message to a much wider audience.”
