Alcohol And Drug Addiction: 15 Essential Tools And Tricks To Stay Clean And Sober Over The Holidays Offered By Harriet Hunter, Author Of Bestselling Book Miracles Of Recovery

Harriet Hunter's award-winning, bestselling book became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery. A new Collector's Edition is now available.

Alcoholism and drug addiction (AUD) continues to become more serious all of the time. According to a recent article from CNBC Opioids: Drug overdose deaths among seniors have more than tripled in 2 decades (cnbc.com).  “Drug overdose deaths more than tripled among people age 65 and older during the past two decades while deaths from alcohol abuse increased more than 18% from 2019 to 2020, according to data published Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics.”

More than 800,000 seniors suffered from drug addiction and 2.7 million suffered from alcohol addiction in 2020, according to separate data from the Health and Human Services Department.

According to Harriet Hunter, “If it was not possible for alcoholics in recovery to have a profound change in perspective, many of us would be dead by now. Our literature tells us that we’ve been given “the keys of the kingdom,” or GOD (Gift of Desperation) in exchange for a humiliating, deplorable, and despicable death. As alcoholics/addicts with a program of recovery, we’ve sold our soul to a power greater than ourselves, in order to live a life of gratitude with an enlightened and sober heart instead.

Don’t think we didn’t live for the holidays, those exciting occasions that gave us a qreen light to drink or drug to our hearts content, without impunity except for our immediate satisfaction.

You don’t need a reason to consider these 15 points to a sober holiday because if you’re reading these now, that’s reason enough. Please feel free to add your own, but if you're new, or know someone who is new to the thought of being a risky drinker, they could prove useful, and safe, These are some of the tools and common practices that still work today, regardless of how many days you have strung together. They mean nothing though, if not practiced:

1. If you don't pick up the first drink, you won't get drunk  Sounds "trite," I know. But each time you drink, it's not how MUCH you drink that snags you under, it's what that first drink does for you!  Alcohol is the solution to most all of our pain and suffering, allowing us to postpone or evade that pain entirely. And let's not forget, self-loathing! It is the elixir that frees us from ourself: our scared, emotional, immature selves and gives us instead, that feeling that we've arrived in a way, never felt before.

2. You have no idea the damage that's possible AFTER that first drink. I can assure you as a blackout drinker, this is true. Did you kill or injure someone? Steal money? Lie, fight or ripped clothes off in front of a crowd? Land in jail as if in a nightmare? Oh, and there's more. If you can be honest, you're either fortunate or in denial.  The ones who never make it in recovery suffer from continual relapses, while denial leads the pack.

3. Don't "romance the drink." If you are newly sober, this one's for you: When with others, realize that no one cares WHAT you're drinking, so long as it doesn't interfere with their drinking! Prepare yourself ahead of time and be smart: carry soda water, iced tea, or soda, and don't stay longer than you must. You don’t even need to excuse yourself or say goodbye! Just exit state left. You’ll hear about it the next day or so and no one will reprimand you because they were too involved celebrating.

4. Examine your Motives for Going in the First Place: Are you orchestrating the Holiday event? Will you be receiving an MVP Award? Do you have something to prove to them or yourself or are you attending to not disappoint others? All of these would be considered wrong reasons, because (a) you're just not that important, and (b) after the 2nd or 3rd drink, no one is going to care or notice you’re there or gone. But if you have a drinking concern, you should care.

5. Bring Your Own Car. No easier way to get out of Dodge then to have your own set of wheels.

6. Bring some hard sugar-free candy with you. Candy helps to ease the pressure of anxiety, and self-consciousness, making it easier to change our attention to something else other than what we THINK others are thinking about us. (Because…. they’re not, it’s our ego dancing for joy, preparing itself for the drink we think will save us from ourselves!)

7. THINK the drink through to the other side. Prepare yourself ahead of time by practicing in front of the mirror. What will you say if sweet Aunt Betty trys to corner you about getting her a drink? Practice saying NO and offer a gentle suggestion that you will ask someone else to get it for her. You cannot, rather, should not, put yourself and your sobriety in that position, in ANY position that could compromise your sobriety. What will you say when someone asks if “you’d like a drink?”

8. Have Telephone Numbers at the ready and handy to use. This is why your sponsor harps about practicing picking up the telephone. More than once it has saved my life and it will save yours too.  But YOU have to do the work.

9. Print this out and add to it, anything and everything that speaks to YOU personally about how to protect your precious gift of sobriety.

10. Remember, this is just another day like any other with the exception of the spiritual and family undertones of resentments that ring with it. Holidays are hard for everyone (no, we have no monopoly on pain although we think we do). However, you really do have the control you desire to walk through them clean and sober if that’s your goal.

11. PLEASE, recite this after me: We only have to stay sober JUST FOR THE REST OF THIS DAY. This is the miracle of sobriety! And this is how it works:

Not New Year’s Day, Christmas Eve, With or Without Family, at an upcoming funeral or event: Just for the rest of today. So, count how many more hours of the day you have left where your feet are, (subtract sleeping, eating, working.) Now you’re left with several little hours. Who can’t stay sober just for these few remaining hours? We stay sober just for today because tomorrow isn't born yet.

I used to tell folks who want to quit, to put a rubber band around your wrist and whenever that sinking feeling in your stomach starts to twist your thinking, as you sweat with anticipation and fear of how soon you can drink. Snap that band and change your thinking! Help someone else, do something nice for someone, reach up and out of your comfort zone and try something different.  These tricks work if you’re willing to work it.

12. The single solitary fact remains: IF YOU HAVE 24-hours under your belt already, there is NO reason WHY you cannot do this again! It is the perfect opportunity to PRACTICE THE PRINCIPLES OF SOBRIETY IN ALL OUR AFFAIRS.  And from the moment we wake in the morning, life is nothing but one big practice lesson.

It is our THINKING that wants to make or break us!

Your thinking has one mission and one mission only: to help you fail. Our self-centered ego is doing pushups outside the door hoping and praying you’re feeling vulnerable enough, scared and fearful enough that it can convince you to take a drink. And without some “thing” bigger than you to count on for help? The chances of it succeeding are pretty good.

So, the moral of this story is, IF by a miracle we are still alive tomorrow, we hit our knees in thanks for another day sober, and ask that thing bigger than us to keep us sober for this day only. It's as simple as that.

Make up your own personal safety guide, or add to this, and then share this with others. You will be helping not just you, but the other person having a tough time too. But with your help, they might stay sober another day!

13. Check yourself into rehab. We think when we’re inebriated, that we have life by (well, you know where) but that’s where the danger begins: Many of us return to wherever home is and never wake up, dying from a drug-induced overdose of alcohol, drugs, while enduring a heart-attack, liver or kidney shutdown, driving while drunk, as the list gets worse from here.

Rehab, or even a short-term detox center is the very BEST way to sober up. By allowing medical professionals to check your BAL (blood alcohol level); your other vitals and determine how to bring you out and down safely, you’re letting yourself know that you really ARE worth something. If you cherish your family and others who care for you, this is a great time to do yourself a favor. While you’re at it, maybe ask for a physical since chances are you’ve been putting it off to drink instead.

14.  THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS WORLD THAT A DRINK WILL MAKE BETTER.” You may find that euphoric rush of adrenaline we live for in the moment. Although the truth is, after that first drink it’s downhill from there because we can’t stop! NOTHING GETS BETTER WITH ALCOHOL, beginning with ourselves!

15.  LASTLY, know that you never have to feel alone again. There are others, thousands of us, just like you, who are dying of loneliness and think a drink will make that loneliness go away; which, of course, it never ever will.  But what will take us out of ourselves is being with others just like ourselves: who drink just like us but one is too much and a hundred is never enough.

In the telephone directory or on line you will find AA meetings 24 hours of every single day. Google https://Intherooms.com for starters, or SMART Recovery, or ANY internet or recovery where there are round-the-clock meetings of every addiction imaginable

Look up a local AA meeting which is where the heart of recovery begins for us as a drinker, and go. You are under no obligation to say a thing other than listen and be with others. Of course, someone is ready to answer any questions should you have them or just be an observer. The secret is, while you’re there with us, you won’t go “there,” to the corner bar or liquor store. And trying a meeting of your choice may be the very best that could ever happen to you.

While there are many treatment approaches and programs, what is common to successful individuals who find themselves within a substance abuse program is the shared pain and the loneliness, often with an ongoing support system for the person battling the disease. That support system is what Harriet Hunter offers in “Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith.”

Hunter continues to receive rave reviews for her work from readers and reviewers alike. Vernita Taylor of Readers Favorite stated, “Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage, and Faith by Harriet Hunter is a great choice if you’re struggling with addiction because it offers a full year of inspiration and affirmations which I enjoyed. I see this book as a mentor or sponsor that is walking by your side and helping to lead you to a better, more improved you while teaching you how to deal with your stressors. The best teacher is someone who has been there and done that, and this book doesn’t disappoint. The author knows first-hand what it takes and how it feels to be addicted. If you need help along your journey, pick up a copy of this book; it’s highly recommended.”

Melanie Barton Bragg, Licensed Holistic Psychotherapist said, “Harriet shares her journey of grief, loss, and eventually arriving at a place of peace. We are privileged to have an inside look at how she has and is recovering. This daily meditation guide provides thought-provoking ideas to meditate on throughout the day and has been useful as discussion starters in my therapy groups. The usual 12-step daily meditation books have been in print for decades. This book is a refreshing addition to the standard recovery tools.”

Anthony Capozzolli of Dismantled Life Podcast said, “Miracles of Recovery has been a feast for my recovering soul. Every page is filled with love and helpful insights that lead to discovery. I read each page by date and randomly turn to other pages for an additional spiritual hug when I need one. It’s almost as if Harriet wrote her wonderful book for me. Page after page hits so close to home I often tear up from positive awareness and clarity of emotion.” Readers can find more 5-Star reviews from others on Amazon.

Alcohol And Drug Addiction – New Collector’s Edition Of Miracles Of Recovery Announced By Best Selling Author Harriet Hunter, Just In Time For The Holidays

Harriet Hunter's award-winning, bestselling book became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Bestselling author Harriet Hunter has announced that her award-winning, bestselling book, Miracles of Recovery, is now available in a special collector’s edition, just in time for the holidays. The e-book version of the book will be available at no charge on Amazon December 5 through December 7, 2022.

The updated version of the book features 365-daily inspiration that has helped thousands of people in recovery.

No matter who you are or where you are, no matter your status or position, you can recover. Alcoholics and drug addicts need support and they need tools. The support is in place, in every segment of our society, as are the necessary tools.

Harriet Hunter's bestselling book, Miracles of Recovery, is one such tool. Featuring 365-daily inspirations. Miracles of Recovery was written not just for those addicted, but for the parents, the spouses - anyone touched by the disease, because addiction is a family affair. Using the foundation of 12-Step Recovery, Miracles of Recovery embraces holistic suggestions as a practical approach for those who must face life on life’s terms, clean and sober. Encouraging and thought-provoking, Miracles of Recovery inspires with Universal Truths, “Because,” Harriet says, “once we know better, we do better.”

“With enough willingness, Miracles of Recovery has the power to change the way we think through association and implementation of exercises and suggestions, Hunter stated. “When we change the way we think, our actions follow. Each day's message encourages us to open our hearts to the unlimited possibility of hope and self-worthiness, courage, and recovery. One day at a time, one page at a time, we will transform ourselves, becoming the person we have always wanted to be.

“Many of you continue, as part of your daily ritual, to enjoy Miracles of Recovery. If I’m speaking to you, I hope you will find the enhanced versions of these passionate 365-daily reads even more inspiring.

“The new Collectors Edition is the gift that answers a need to understand and support those we love and care for in and around the rooms of recovery. Miracles of Recovery brings to the heart of every user, to evaluate where their feet are just for today and to make tough but necessary decisions about the path they are on. It is written by someone who has experienced the same self-loathing, the same despair, someone who still lives the daily journey that is recovery.”

Harriet offers a personal, sometimes raw, reflection of the truth about addiction seldom seen elsewhere. She uses examples, based on experience, as to how many can achieve long-term sobriety by embracing new behavior and positive reinforcement.

The author spurs the reader to embrace the belief that, regardless of challenges life presents, “NOTHING can change the course of recovery when you keep yourself, your sobriety, and your Higher Power first in your life.” In short, Miracles of Recovery offers hope where there is none through a simple program of actions for complicated people.

The new edition is available at Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Harriet-Hunter/e/B07JR632FX?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1667512852&sr=8-1. The e-book version of the book will be available at no charge on Amazon December 5 through December 7, 2022.

Substance abuse issues have been on the increase, primarily due to the overwhelming effects of a global pandemic. The National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse mentioned in 2018 that 88,000 people die each year to alcohol-related deaths. They go on to say that globally, alcohol misuse was the fifth leading risk factor for premature death and disability in 2010. Now these statistics look even more dire with the onslaught of the pandemic effect: premature death, isolation, job loss and so much more.

Alcohol And Drug Addiction - Self Centered Pride And Arrogance Defined By Harriet Hunter, Bestselling Author Of Miracles Of Recovery

Harriet Hunter's award-winning, bestselling book became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Self-centered pride and arrogance are of special interest to those who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction. While these terms are often interchanged they, in fact, trigger different states of mind. In a recent article posted to her website, Harriet Hunter, author of the award-winning bestselling book Miracles of Recovery, offers an in-depth look at these terms as used in the rooms of recovery. In that article she said:

In an article in Psychology Today, printed June 29, 2014, Guy Winch Ph.D. writes in part:

“Psychologists distinguish between two kinds of pride.

1.   Authentic pride arises when we feel good about ourselves, confident, and productive, related to socially desirable personality traits such as being agreeable, conscientious, and emotionally stable.

2.   Hubristic pride sometimes referred to self-centered pride, is egotism and arrogance, and is exhibited in undesirable traits such as being disagreeable, aggressive, having low or brittle self-esteem—and being prone to shame.”

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS WE CAN DO TO OVERCOME SELF-CENTERED PRIDE?

* Stop denying. Anytime we deny our truth we hurt ourselves. Denial sends the message that either we are not strong enough to find our truth or we feel we are not deserving to stand up for our truth.

* Share our truth with others so that everyone can hear in a non-threatening yet honest way.

* Admit our mistakes to others. Yes, we all make mistakes and thank goodness. If we never made mistakes, not only would we be in denial but self-centered pride would continue to keep us stuck, wearing the garb that protects the world from seeing we were not perfect.

* Give Credit where Credit is Deserved. That’s right. When we were locked into the guise of pride, we would never think of deferring to others and salute their success. Why, we wanted all the glory for ourselves! We handled it all, didn’t we?

It’s interesting how that worked. When the show came off as planned we stood up, bowed, and took credit for every aspect. But when the show plummeted, we turned to whoever was around us pointing fingers out that it was someone else’s fault things failed!

* Practice Active Listening. There is so much communication on any day whirling around us, we take for granted and pretend we are listening, when in reality, we already know how we want to respond, what it is we need to say and how we need to say it. It is as if we’ve cut the person off before they even finish their sentence.

* Get Rid of False Beliefs: When we do not give ourselves sufficient nurturing, it is impossible for us to see the baggage we still carry around inside us, called false beliefs. We grew up with them, who knows where they came from, parents, teachers, friends. Some false beliefs are:

◦ I’ve been doing it this way for years:
◦ I don’t need any help, I can handle it myself;
◦ If it’s not broke, don’t fix it
◦ No one has ever complained before now!
◦ They’ll never get rid of me, they need me too much;

* Let someone else be in charge and/or take the lead for a change. Let someone else make the decision or manage the solving of a problem.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEALTHY AUTHENTIC PRIDE AND ARROGANCE?

* Pride is confidence, it is easy to see with confidence, how too much pride as it becomes boastful, sounds like arrogance. Arrogance is insecurity wrapped up to appear to be pride.

* Prideful individuals are aware of other people’s ability and are often sensitive to their successes.

* Arrogant people, come from a place of strong indifference, are boastful and need to be heard with little concern for their choice of words.

* Proud people believe in the adage that hard work is worth the wait to success, while people with arrogance expect everything to be handed to them.

* Proud people understand their core values and sense of self. People of considered arrogance see themselves as better-than, even when and if they know they are not.

Arrogant People often:

1. Look down their nose on those they serve, or anyone different from them.

2. Beat themselves up over little mistakes. ...

3. Feel anger as their first response to human frailty.

4. Secretly manipulate, rather than openly influence others

5. Help from a high tower position of superiority

6. Cheat to win. ...

7. Consider people as objects to be used for personal gain.

8. See themselves as onimopotent

9. Judge everyone and everything

10. Have trouble admitting they were wrong.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS WE CAN DO TO OVERCOME ARROGANCE?

When we acknowledge to ourselves that we are self-centered to the max, so arrogant that we close off our thinking from the sunlight of the Spirit, what then is our solution?

The full article is available at her website at http://www.harriethunter.org.

Harriet Hunter's bestselling book, Miracles of Recovery, is one such tool. Tools necessary to maintain sobriety and change one's life through changing one’s perspective are also proposed. Miracles of Recovery suggests that readers "Do life differently," through exercises, solutions, and methods to improve self-esteem, confidence, and embrace a profound sense of hope needed to succeed.

Miracles of Recovery was written not just for those addicted, but for the parents, the spouses - anyone touched by the disease, because addiction is absolutely a family affair.

'Miracles Of Recovery' will be on sale in ebook format at Amazon from May 2 through May 9, 2022 for $2.99.

Miracles of Recovery shows through personal examples how to achieve long-term sobriety by embracing new behavior and positive reinforcement, regardless of what happens in one’s life. She offers a personal, sometimes raw reflection of the truth about addiction seldom seen elsewhere.

Hunter has received rave reviews for her work from readers and reviewers alike.

Page after page hits so close to home I often tear up from positive awareness and clarity of emotion.”

Miracles of Recovery received the first place President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association.

Since her walk into recovery in 1999, Harriet has had one primary purpose: to show others how they can achieve their miracles while staying sober with a vision and determination to never go backwards, one day at a time.

Using her experience strength and hope, Harriet strives to be a conduit of hope and encouragement to others in their addictions, by showing them what continues to work for others. With practical tools, principles and promises as found in A.A., and other 12-step programs, she mirrors examples of how anyone can be free from the bondage of self, regardless of their situation.

Understanding Alcohol And Drug Addiction Symptoms Is Not So Simple Says Harriet Hunter, Author Of Bestselling Book About Recovery, 'Miracles Of Recovery'

Hunter's award-winning book, Miracles of Recovery, became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Substance Use Disease (SUD) is a form of disorder that is difficult to diagnose - not because the symptoms are concealed or masked, but (in many cases) because the addict refuses to acknowledge the presence of the disease. The refusal to admit there is a problem does not solve the problem. Therein lies the insidious nature of addiction. Harriet Hunter, bestselling author of Miracles Of Recovery, addressed this subject in a recent article titled, "Alcohol And Drug Addiction Symptoms". That article reads in part:

There is no other destroyer of brain cells like the subtleness of alcohol and the persistence of drugs.

For many of us, alcohol attacks without warning, infiltrating and insidious warping an otherwise logical mind. According to our literature, those who are under the spell of a Substance Use Disease, those with SUD are by and large over-achievers in every other aspect of their lives except for the symptoms and manifestations alcohol and drugs. This barrage begins, as brain cells and synapses falter, become damaged and die. Some of us were blackout drinkers right away, some are bingers, people who drink over short periods of a time while others seem to have an unlimited ability to drink around the clock. Then for many others, there are those for whom we will never understand: those who can take it or leave it:

They walk away, with booze, beer or wine left in their glass, and they leave it.

We know the effects are so elusive that we believe we need more, and we do. For us, there’s always the need for more. Alcohol works without a break behind the scenes demanding ever-earnest cooperation from its host, with each sip.

Research, according to Iranpour A, Nakhaee N. A Review of Alcohol-Related Harms: A Recent Update. Addict Health. 2019 Apr;11(2):129-137. doi:10.22122/ahj.v11i2.225 shows that alcohol misuse can increase the risk of many different health issues such as:

Lung, throat, esophagus, brain, stomach, liver, rectum, and breast cancers, Liver disease, Chronic kidney disease, Congestive heart failure, Stroke, Pneumonia, Severe depression and anxiety, violent acts or outbursts, Erectile dysfunction, Low libido

Like a deadly insect waiting to attack, alcohol seeks the softness of internal organs and begins destruction even as we feel fine.

ALCOHOL IS A THREE-FOLD DISEASE OF PERCEPTION:
We experience “the phenomena of craving,” described in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, that begins before we pick up the first drink. It is this mental obsession to drink that drives the physiological phenomena of craving, the insatiable need to have another that kick-starts our journey into insanity. These events, together with a soul-sickness that points to our own self-reliance, work together to mask an illusion of grandeur.

Booze transforms our thinking away from the logic of our reality. We see, hear and believe the person we always wanted to be, but never was. Many of us became boisterous, outgoing, or downright dangerous, while others captivated us with voices of conviviality they never knew they possessed. Still others prefer the isolation drinking brings.

Alcoholism never stops. It moves forward, insisting upon our utmost attention in pursuit of complete ownership of our soul. It is always with us, growing like a cancer when engaged in our bloodstream of those affected until we put it into remission with abstinence, or death, or until we quit—once and for all.

What makes alcohol so popular is its reliability, and that for those over 21 or younger in some states, it is legal and accessible. We know what we can expect from our drink of choice. Compared to the faux-complexity of drugs, 80 percent alcohol is still, 80 percent alcohol. This, combined with ease of availability strips away most of our concerns as one drink becomes too many, but yet, one-hundred is never enough.

The National Institute of Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse mentioned in 2018 that 88,000 people die each year to alcohol-related deaths. This goes on to say that globally, alcohol misuse was the fifth leading risk factor for premature death and disability in 2010. Now these statistics can be doubled with the onslaught of the Pandemic, isolation, job loss and so much more.

While opioids may lead the way in addiction abuse, benzodiazepines, stimulants and sleep medications are a dangerous threat to our health such as:

• Gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting or nausea
• Decreased respiratory (lung) function
• Seizures
• Mood changes
• Dangerously high body temperatures
• Declines in brain functions such as memory and the ability to think clearly
• Paranoia or aggressive behaviors
• Coma
• Death

Unfortunately for the real alcoholic or addict, none of these potential harms seem to make any difference. Our disease tells us they may happen to other people, but not to us.

Alcohol And Drug Addiction: 7 Myths about Drinking Alcohol Offered By Harriet Hunter, Bestselling Author Of Miracles Of Recovery

Hunter's award-winning book, Miracles of Recovery, became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Like any other disease, there is information readily available via the Internet, that is really more hearsay than truth. However, when dealing with AUD or SUD, it is important that we base our decisions going forward on factual information. Harriet Hunter, bestselling author of ‘Miracles Of Recovery’ recently presented seven myths regarding alcohol and drug abuse:

“Many of us know someone with a family history of alcoholism, already predisposed genetically to drink and may have experienced potentially negative consequences. If we continue to drink with reckless abandon, there is a strong likelihood your grandparents, parents or even aunts and uncles have contributed to this incurable disease. Regardless of where you are in your family of origin, changes are significant to your falling victim to the consequences of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).

“For someone diagnosed with AUD or SUD (Substance Use Disorder) alcohol is cunning, baffling and powerful. It is the only disease that tells us we don’t HAVE a disease as we’re looking up from the gutter. AUD could be characterized as a disease of denial. Many who drink alcohol take this denial to their grave. While their death certificate may state cause of death as heart failure, lung, liver and/or irreversible brain loss, referred to as wet brain, (a/k/a Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome,) alcohol and/or drugs often played a significant role in the death of their loved one.

“Scientists and researchers are digging deep into the correlation genetics and the psychological and long-term effects and implications of alcohol play. The American Journal of Psychiatry (September 2021) Death and Despair outcomes (deaths from suicide, AUD and liver diseases) have increased since the Pandemic. Statistically alcohol is at the heart of 15% of overdoses; 26% of all suicides and 50% of liver diseases.

“Here are seven misunderstood myths about alcohol. If you have echoed this before, it could be a sign that you’re headed to the end of the line of “normal drinking.” You’ve possibly moved predictably into the position of no return‑‑that of a chronic drinker.

I only Drink on weekends
The medical community agrees that alcohol, in any form, is a progressive disease. We put it in remission when we stop drinking. Drinking any amount is how we keep the disease active as it destroys brain cells, our liver, and other organs. At some point or another, our drinking and the thinking that goes along with our weekend drinking becomes obsessive, controlling, and we drink more, to make up for what we lost during the week.

I don’t hurt anyone when I drink: (because I drink at home)
When we pick up a drink, we become in a trance-like state fueled by a short-lived feeling of euphoria and an obsession that says, “more will get us there again.” We begin to “change” psychologically in order to control our drinking. Questions of whether we must get more, how much will last for the weekend, and a sense of doom that no matter the amount, it probably won’t be enough, begin to infiltrate our thinking. We become self-centered, refusing to engage in anything that will take us away from our drink, or selfishly isolate, preferring to hide our drinking from everyone by staying alone. The variations of how we act and what we do to preserve our drinking soon include guilt and shame, for we know we must act alone.

So while we may not have had a DUI (yet) or gotten in a car accident (yet) stole money, missed work, told lies and worse—all in the name of alcohol, eventually, any, or all of these will become a part of our story. These examples, and many more, personify the natural progression of our disease.

I can stop whenever I want to!
If you think you can, try getting up from the bar or your living room after that one beer or one cocktail. It may work for a good while, but sooner or later, every drinker crosses an imaginary line of no return. We can’t see it, because the degradation of brain cells, synapses and organ functions is happening on the inside.

We don’t know if it’s the first drink, or the 100th that will get us drunk or bring harmful consequences, because the 100th is not enough, and one is too many!

The danger becomes once we cross that imaginary line of no return, there is no going back to being a normal drinker. We like to use the analogy of, “you can’t change a pickle back to a cucumber!” And so it is with someone with AUD.

I have a great job, a loving family, and am liked and adored by many.
Alcohol is a drink of denial. If we react to the phenomenon of craving where we become emotionally and psychologically obsessive in our need for more, if we can ‘feel’ a shift or transformation in our personality, regardless of how exhibited, then chances are good we may have AUD.

I’ve never had a DUI, I’ve never been to Jail; and I don’t drink under a bridge with a paper bag
One doesn’t have to have had a DUI, been locked up in a psych ward or jail to have AUD. These are the unmistakable consequences of what happens to many whose drinking becomes out of control and the consequences become more demonstrable from here.

Rarely would we see anyone under a bridge drinking from a paper bag. That vision would be indicative of the extreme shame in the of early A.A., but not today.

I have no alcoholism in my family
There is no history of AA in my family, and, I am smarter than most. I’ve earned 3 Ph.D.’s and my doctorate in medical implications of the undernourished has enabled me to be selected for a Nobel Peace Prize. I’m responsible in every way. I can’t have alcoholism because I’m too intelligent and independent in my interactions… except for when I drink.

Alcohol has no respect for gender, age, education or denomination. Its purpose is to permanently injure its host. There are no criteria that determine the selection of who dies and who gets sober. Those who are willing to go to any length whatsoever finds sobriety more often then those in denial.

I only have two drinks per night, never more.
By this time, some of us laugh when we hear this. Those who are in recovery or those who have AUD understand that what we’re really saying is something that resembles, “I have two bottles of wine at night, or three to four drinks per night, never more.” But again, normal drinkers just tell the truth.

In conclusion, we drink to escape, because we like the effect.

Alcohol And Drug Addiction: How To Survive The Holidays And Get Past The Holiday Triggers By Harriet Hunter, Best Selling Author Of Miracles Of Recovery

Hunter's award-winning book, Miracles of Recovery, became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Most of us look forward to the Holidays. It is a time of rest, reflection relaxation, socialization and a time to contemplate all that is good about life. For substance abusers however, the Holiday season is a time of stress, strain, tension and distress, as the holidays present a real danger - the Holiday triggers.

As best-selling author Harriet Hunter wrote in a recent blog post titled "Alcohol and the Holidays", these triggers can happen at any time, but are especially strengthened during the Holiday season. They can include:

Family stress
Emotions, positive and negative
Life Changes
“Thinking” about drinking
“Thinking” about the ‘good ole days.’
Expectations of ourselves and others
Physical and emotional complications made worse with stress
Isolation
Complacency
Anniversaries, death, job loss and successes

"There are a majority of us who would be content to just binge on the holidays." Hunter wrote. "The reasons are varied and many. For some, it’s how we justify our drinking to justify that 'See? I’m not alcoholic, I only drink…on holidays, birthdays, weddings, funerals, football games’ and so on…) Triggers DO affect us most often, by those who invented them: parents, family, people, places and other ‘things.’

"Triggers, if we let them, have the power to make us feel momentarily insane: full of shame, guilt, deep regret, depression and more.

"A popular thought at the holidays for overindulgers is, “ It’s the holidays.” Isn’t that how we grew up? Many of us were stuck in our over-indulgent world of plenty. We justified everything to begin with, but during the holidays, we typically set ourselves up for even more of the same. More gifts, more food, more celebrating and more libations." After all, in honest reflection, this "right to drink" was the shield we used to not feel one or more of the triggers above.

The full article, which offers 9 powerful ways to get past these dreaded Holiday triggers, can be found at her website at http://www.harriethunter.org.

Alcohol And Drug Addiction: Best Selling Author Harriet Hunter Details 12 Ways To Express Positive Control When Angry

Hunter's award-winning book, Miracles of Recovery, became the first-place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

While it is important for all of us to learn how to control our anger, it is even more important for the alcoholic or drug addict. Harriet Hunter, award-winning bestselling author of Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith.” recently posted a piece in which she offered 12 ways to express positive control when angry. While directed specifically at those in or on the way to recovery, the piece offers rock-solid advice that can be used by anyone. That piece of Harriet’s story reads in part:

“I grew up an angry child. The older I became, the more resentful I was with everyone. I trusted no one. Absorbing the hate of those around me, I became a hateful, self-destructive victim. Without tools to cope with frustration and anger, except for drugs and alcohol, I descended into hopelessness. Addictions suppressed my anger as it festered and grew stronger. I didn’t want to feel; I wanted to escape everyone, including me. My drugs of choice did that for me.

Anger was A Nasty Getting Even Response, and I had it down to perfection. After years of hatred, eating anger’s poison and hoping others would die, anger told me, “I’ll show you, I’ll kill me!” Recovery came not one minute too soon.”

“You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger.”—Buddha

“For as long as we blame everyone else, do we stay a prisoner to our misery, convinced that anger is the only way we can get attention or sympathy. We stay the victim with self-imposed rights to remain that way. Working with professionals and loving sponsors helps us to accept responsibility for the harms we’ve done to others. We found that as soon as we let go of selfish, self-centered anger, that these emotions hurt no one as much as it hurt us. As others walked away, we were the ones who hung on to the power and excitement of anger’s poison fueled by our disease of addiction.”

How Important Is Anger?

When we ask, “How important is anger?” we remind ourselves that our hard- fought serenity and peace must be non-negotiable, without exception. Anger must go. We promptly admit when we are in the wrong and make amends to correct the situation. After all, this is our program, no one else’s.

What recourse do we have? Here we learn to Live and Let Live. We must, because the alcoholic/addict in or out of active addiction or without a program is like a lion chasing its prey. Anger becomes focused and relentless, out of control insane; and, if not checked, we can and often do, hurt others physically or emotionally through our words.

With practice, we learn to pause when agitated or doubtful and remember that This Too, Shall Pass. These actions, together with constant contact with our Higher Power, help to ensure the distance necessary to dissipate our anger, and the poisonous damage it causes us and others.

How Can We Get Rid of Anger?

1. Give Yourself a Break. Why should we allow others to zap what precious energy we have and live rent free in our heads? Just STOP. Get up, take a walk and choose gratitude instead.

2. Stop Talking About it! To yourself or to anyone else. All we do is give away our power and make the incident/event bigger than it really is. Instead, make what is positive in your life larger.

3. Pause: Our AA literature reminds us to, “Pause when agitated or doubtful.” When we’re agitated or doubtful, chances are we’re also in fear: fear of not being accepted, fear of being rejected, fear of someone getting something we think belongs to us, and so on.

4. Practice Gratitude: Part of learning the lesson to let go of negativity begins with our ability, in the worst of times, to find the light of gratitude instead of anger. Focused positivity makes gratitude bigger, more important than our disappointments and anger. When we focus and bring forth positivity, we see the strength in our own resolve and how much self-control we own as we look to come out the other side of a dark situation. Practice makes progress. This example reduces the impact and severity of our defects and personal disappointments because we’ve made the necessary shift: a conscious decision to seek the light and power of our determined resolve. In so doing, we rise to the challenge of peace, instead of the rabbit hole of negativity.

5. Journal FEAR: There are lots of reasons people don’t like to journal. One reason is we feel afraid of what we will see. To journal fear (False Evidence Appearing Real) is to risk laying open a path to our deepest selves. This is the best route to ask hard questions. When we begin this fact-finding mission, the likelihood is that our new truths will set us free. There exists, as we journal, a comfort we can accept a middle ground surrounding angry situations when we ask ourselves a few questions:

• What is it about this situation that makes me angry?
• What would make it different?
• What have I contributed to encourage this end result?
• How have I encouraged my own anger?
• Instead of reveling in the knee-jerk reaction of anger, how can I choose a position that is most
beneficial and comforting to me?

Is the specific situation of anger and all of its parts TRUE, or is it FALSE. If false, what hasn’t happened yet? (This is False Evidence Appearing Real!) We may assume, imagine, or contrive someone has it out for us, but has it happened in fact? These questions help us to let go of what is not our reality.

The more questions we ask, the easier it is to see the big picture and the truth of what led up to the outcome of anger. Ask, “Do I want to be happy or do I want to be right?” This, for many, is the turning point to move away from angry to compromising. In order to be right, our anger must first morph itself into self-righteous indignation. With self-righteous indignation is the false-belief that others deserve more negative consequences. It is in this obsessed thinking that rage manifests itself by crossing the invisible line to indiscriminate aggression.

6. STOP Playing the Victim: We fall victims when we internalize delusional fear and visualize taking on dangerous even paranoid outcomes. We remember that if we are in active addition to begin with, our thinking is delusional, over-exaggerated and walking on the edge of insanity!

7. “How Important Is it?” (really…) If your child’s bedroom is a mess and you become angry close the door. If you don’t like the way your husband or wife does something, do it yourself. Ask the question, “Is this something that will matter 24 hours from now?” Most of the time, nothing brings itself to the level of urgency of now.

8. Do Something Different: Give that anger something to do: take a walk, exercise, sit down, eyes closed and pray and meditate for five minutes. DO some THING that points you to a place of easy breathing and positive change for you.

9. Get Creative: If you have a mere 24 hours to live, make a list of events you would like to be a part of and do them.

10. Create a Special Mantra Just for you that speaks to the essence of who you want to be in the moment. “I deserve to focus on my serenity and nothing else matters,” will give you an idea, but only you know what will move you. Write this mantra ten times and if it doesn’t feel comfortable, find another and then keep it in your pocket. Not only will it help remind you that, “This too, shall pass,” it becomes your own personal guide of assurance.

11. Express your anger: It’s OK to say how you feel, as long as you handle it in the right way. We all get angry because it’s a part of our being human. The difference becomes, what it is we DO with that anger. Ask a trusted friend to help you find a calm resolution. Outbursts solve no problems, but mature dialogue can help reduce stress and ease the threat of anger. It may also prevent future problems.

12. Give yourself space and time to gain distance from the event that caused the anger. Time may not heal all wounds, however, if you have tried all the above, and ideas of your own, allow only 48-hours to feel as angry as the moments you were first engaged. After 48 hours, consider help in either letting it go or seek help from a mental health professional. We’re remembering our goal is to be rid of anger.

The Flow State: Living Life On Life's Terms For The Alcoholic Or Drug Addict In Recovery - New Perspective By Harriet Hunter, Award Winning, Bestselling Author Of Miracles Of Recovery

Hunter's award-winning book, Miracles Of Recovery, became the first place recipient of the coveted President’s Award in nonfiction from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Miracles features 365 powerful daily inspirations from a holistic view of recovery.

Living in the flow state has been one of the hottest Internet topics for a number of years now. This concept is not new certainly, as it is found in nearly every spiritual tradition going back thousands of years. It is the essence of the Taoist philosophy, dating back to the Han dynasty in China. If we try to fight "the world" we will surely suffer. If instead we cooperate with reality, go with the flow," we will instead find peace and satisfaction.

Harriet Hunter, award-winning author of the bestselling book "Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage and Faith," recently posted an article on her website in which she explains why this concept is vitally important for the alcoholic or drug addict. The article reads in part:

"I always thought my life would never change. I figured my parents would live together forever; that I would stay disappointed with myself, and that people could never be trusted. I grew up alone, isolated, and afraid, without a purpose or direction.

"As I free-floated my way through life, I felt sure life had nothing to offer me except a job sufficient to pay for my drugs of choice and enough men to go around to make life interesting. Until it didn’t.

"The more life spins out of control as we try to manage the unknown, the more insane our lives become. Professional help and recovery teach us to take baby steps in accepting life on life’s terms. If you were like me, active in my disease when life got really real, then chances are, this is for you.

"Recovery for us becomes that flimsy reed we grasp to keep us grounded and above-board with ourselves, the God of our Understanding and others. It’s here we discover we can relinquish fears that never materialized and turn our attention on where it needs to be: on our Higher Power by letting Him control everything and everyone else. With the assurance that Higher Power is situated snuggly in our side pocket, life unfolds around us in the manner and in a time unknown to us. We don’t condemn ourselves to extremes of always or never any longer. Each day is unique as we try now, to live in the grey, in the middle of black or white.

"As we learn we deserve the same care and thoughtfulness we so freely give to others, sober recovery shows us the way to love and nurture ourselves. At the same time, we feel sure we are shored up with a new reserve of patience, as our lives now are re-created in peace and understanding. Whatever comes our way now and however life unfolds, we take comfort that if it was supposed to be different, it would be, and we trust it."
