School Shooting Lockdowns Can Traumatize Young Children - Award Winning Author, Psychologist And Selfie Filmmaker Barbara Becker Holstein Helps Open The Doors Of Communication Via The Selfie Project

A recent story on the Washington Post website detailed some of the psychological effects school lockdowns create in school age children. The story was as heartbreaking as it was eye-opening. Some young children weep with terror. Others write final messages to family members - and worse.

Our children do not deserve to be subjected to such horrific lockdown situations in places where they should feel completely safe. Sadly though, it is necessary. Therefore the question we must ask ourselves as parents, grandparents and educators is - "What can we do to help them?"

Award winning author, Positive Psychologist and selfie filmmaker Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has an answer that is as powerful as it is unique.

"We must help our children feel comfortable expressing their emotions, from joyous to despairing. Typically it is easy to be delighted and happy when kids express delight and are in a good mood. However when a child is cross, or pouting, crying over ‘nothing’ or having some sort of meltdown we are less resourceful as adults. We yell, we put down, we try minor punishments. Often we are unsuccessful.

“What is often not acknowledged is that kids have dark emotions just as we do. This is particularly hard when it comes to issues around going to school. Most of us never had to worry about our safety once we entered the school building. In fact, for many, school was seen as a kind of sanctuary, a place away from a dysfunctional family, or a place with a great library and a free lunch and even milk in the morning.

“Kids today often see school as a kind of battlefield. Their nerves are on edge. Will there be a shouting today? Will it be my school this time? Often kids don’t know how to express their anxiety successfully. Here is where ‘The Selfie Project’ comes in. As a psychologist I recognize the importance of venting the more difficult emotions and thoughts we experience.

“One way to get started is to encourage your child to make a Selfie video on what is on her mind about school. Then watch it together, if your child is comfortable with that and discuss the issues brought up.

“Giving a child a chance to privately vent and then moving toward a discussion about how she feels in school can be very helpful to both of you. Maybe there are things you can do as a parent to make things better, from more understanding at home to involvement with the school system to political action.”

Social media has transformed the world. While parents, grandparents and teachers may sometimes bemoan the negative effects of social media on young people, there are many ways social media can be used to accomplish amazing things. This year we saw some of the Parkland survivors create a movement that impacted both the election and the support for gun control. That may be just the tip of the iceberg. Selfie filmmaker, author and Positive Psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein sees an opportunity to use selfies and social media as a therapeutic tool. For her, the future of young people shines bright, due partly to the positive effects of this new form of communication.

"I feel very good about the potential that 2019 holds for kids," Dr. Holstein stated. The Kavanaugh hearings will make history for many reasons. Never have we been exposed to such levels of detail - a he said/she said situation played out and immortalized in national media. Teens drinking at a party, unwanted advances and conflicting versions of events as presented by Kavanaugh and Ford are not normally the type of events that make news. Yet these kind of issues lie at the very heart of the core message Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and multi-award winning selfie filmmaker, presents to her audiences via her multi-award winning selfie films. In her films she gives young people a voice and allows the rest of us to see what kind of effects these situations have on our children and grandchildren. "The country has been transfixed with the tumult going on in the Senate over the next Supreme Court Justice," Holstein stated. "Some are concerned over Judge Kavanaugh's qualifications. Others worry about his possible political biases. And many of us wonder - how much did he drink in college and did he really hold his hand over Dr. Ford's mouth while lying on top of her? There are so many of women, just beginning to come out of hiding with their #Metoo stories, deeply concerned that women are still trivialized after being treating inappropriately by males. Conversely, many men are concerned that no man can be safe anymore. Drinking at a party, 35 years ago, maybe even doing some inappropriate stuff, does it really matter?

"As a psychologist I don't pretend to be able to decide if Judge Kavanaugh should be appointed to the Supreme Court. However, I can say that our country has become divided on many issues. One of those issues is blatantly evident in the hearings - the issue of how should we view the earlier, potentially dangerous behavior of someone who may undertake a position of great importance to our country. Many people see the antics of teens as merely antics that are outgrown. But many others worry and for good reason. We have a serious alcohol and drug problem in our society. Many teens have sexual experiences that are damaging. Rape and unwanted pregnancy are serious consequences, but any sexual experience that is not consensual can lead to problems. So too can a drug experience or being drunk. All of these 'routine' coming of age events are far from routine.

"Kavanaugh and Ford have given us a golden opportunity to think about what our kids, tweens and teens are exposed to in our culture. How can we make it better for the current and next generations?

"That is the essence of my work as a psychologist and as a filmmaker. In my film 'Conflict', which is one of my latest coming of age Selfie films, the girl is exposed to drinking and drugs when she is far from ready. At the end of the film, the girl throws it back onto the audience to help her. What would you do as her parent? Her teacher? Her grandparent? Her friend?

"In the future, more and more films will utilize smart phones and selfie filmmaking. My films are on the cutting edge in that the actress, in this case Megan Brown, films all of her scenes with her smart phone. She, like millions out there, is taking Selfies all the time. They have become our diaries, our record of our lives, our source of humor, our portfolio of adorable pets, our easy ways to capture both the drama and nonsense of life. I think actors filming their own parts in films with smart phones will be done more and more in the future. I'm interested in giving real people a chance to share with the rest of the world what they film with their smart phones."

The New York Times reported that the C.D.C. Survey of the lives of teenagers confirmed that 1 in 5 students reported being bullied at school. Many had feelings of sadness and hopelessness and 17% considered suicide. 14% had actually made a suicide plan. On the upside 'There's strong data to show that family support and attention by your parents to what you're doing can make a difference in an adolescent's life.' "What does this report say to me as a psychologist/filmmaker? I see my role as a facilitator, an educator and a dramatist. By creating Selfie films that focus on the real life problems of tweens and teens, communication and understandings can happen. Once stirred up by the drama and reality of these films discussion and solutions can take place.

"I believe I have created the first Vertical Selfie Dramas intended to educate, provide psychological insight and inspire solutions to situations that have become bleak for so many of our kids.

"I'm excited to see that Instagram is starting a new app: IGTV that allows up to hour long videos that are shot vertically, so they fill your whole phone screen.

"My films are filmed vertically by the young actresses themselves who do much of the filming on their smart phones. When my films go off into festivals I weave B role film in. But for vertical viewing, the Selfies can stand alone as drama. Right now I am beginning to post on IGTV 'The Truth, A Vertical Selfie Drama'. Over the next several weeks 20 scenes will be shown. In this film, staring Cassidy Terracciano, the girl falls in love, has all sorts of dilemmas leading up to a special secret way to figures out to hold on to the best of herself. Based on my book, 'The Truth, Diary of a Gutsy Tween', this drama vividly portrays the emotions, frustrations and capacities to adapt of a teen."

In addition to her vertical selfie films for IGTV, Dr. Holstein is currently developing "The Selfie Project" to help kids share their feelings and thoughts in a meaningful way via Selfies that can reach millions. "The Selfie Project" provides a way for young people to go public on a number of subjects. Bullying is real, school violence is real, drama because of social media is real for kids. 'The Selfie Project' is giving voice to those subjects. A pilot TV show is in the development phase. Teens will have a chance to discuss via their Selfies and in discussion with Dr. Holstein, various topics that affect their lives, including friend drama, fear of assault weapons, opioids, feelings of anxiety and depression, issues around teenage suicide and more. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist and multi-award winning selfie filmmaker, was recently interviewed by Asbury Park Press. The Asbury Park Press, a part of the USA Today network, is a daily newspaper in Monmouth and Ocean counties of New Jersey and has the third largest circulation in the state. In that interview she talked about her beginnings, her vision for selfie films, and taking "The Selfie Project" to the next level. Q: What surprised you the most about running the business?

Holstein: That there were no other psychologists really on the same path. I was alone as a psychologist/filmmaker focusing on Selfies as Film.

Q: Describe your most unusual customer, job or work experience.

Holstein: Each step out of the treatment room: most recently, “The Selfie Project,” which is taking the thoughts, feelings and concerns of tweens and teens into account. A pilot show is in development. Recently on a podcast show out at Shared Universe Podcasting in Eatontown, I was interviewed by C.J. Cullen, developer of Hang on to Your Shorts Film Festival. Megan Brown, the actress in a number of my films and also participating in 'The Selfie Project', was with me. Our thoughts about the positive use of Selfies slid out into the universe as if by magic.

Q: How would you like the business to grow and change?

Holstein:I would like Enchanted Self Productions to be nationally known. I would like every school and library to have copies of my books, and access to the related films. I would like to develop more related products. I want to continue “The Selfie Project” to help youngsters more clearly express their emotions in safe ways.

Body Shaming, Social Media, Bullying And The Drive To Be Best - Selfie Filmmaker And Positive Psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein Addresses 'Mean Girls'

Dr. Holstein, a psychologist/filmmaker and originator of a unique Selfie Film concept, writes award-winning books, plays and produces short films that offer solutions to problems that impact today's teens and tweens

A recent article in the New York Times entitled "When the 'Mean Girls' Were Teen Girls" gave us a look into the history of the stars of the Broadway hit "Mean Girls". The Tony-nominated musical is based on Tina Fey's movie by the same name. In the article three of the stars - Ashley Park, Taylor Louderman and Kate Rockwell - contrast the characters they play with their own high school experiences. Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, multi-award winning selfie filmmaker, believes there is much to gain from comparing fantasy entertainment to real-world experiences.

"The women who play the mean girls in the Broadway show, 'Mean Girls' were girls themselves," Dr. Holstein stated. "Their responses in The New York Times to how they really were as girls are fascinating.  The general consensus was that they were grateful not be involved with social media.  Also, they had talents that came through in high school without being squashed.  Their advice to young girls can be summed up by Taylor Louderman's remarks: 'Find qualities about yourself that no one else has and love yourself'.

"As a positive psychologist/filmmaker my mission is to inform the public through drama, at times comedic about the developmental issues kids, tweens and teens go through.

"To do this I have developed an unique nitch in which I create Selfiesasfilm and administer 'The Selfie Project'.  In my films, such as 'Conflict,' selected for the New Jersey International Film Festival at Rutgers, to premiere June 9th, 2018, 'Selfies' are used as part of the fimmaking.  Megan Brown, who stars in 'Conflict' did much of her own filming using a smart phone.  Combining the depth of feeling generated by her taking control of her own filming, with the skills of a film crew and then the further skills of a talented film editor, Francesso Nuzzi, leads to a powerful message in less than five minutes.  The message is that kids, in this case, a young teen, are vulnerable.  The girl is vulnerable to all sorts of things: a bully, drinking, drugs, feeling abandoned by her parents, feeling lonely in school, etc.  The audience is left with a push to think and solve problems.  Growing up can not be just left to the kids.

"To help us understand what is really on the minds of kids, I've created 'The Selfie Project'.  This is a way for kids to make selfies that can be uploaded on to You Tube and then shared on www.selfiefilmmakers.com. 'The Selfie Project' show is in the pilot stage of development. Here kids will present their selfies on a critical subject in their lives and then discuss in round table fashion about their thoughts and feelings with each other and experts. To further get the message out as to what is on the minds of kids and how to help people of all ages achieve happiness, THE ENCHANTED SELF Podcast show will once a month bring kids and experts on board with me to discuss issues and possible solutions.

"THE ENCHANTED SELF helps people achieve happiness.  Happiness is something we work at. It involves understand the fragility of kids emotionally and psychologically as they grow.  They must be handled with care.  At each stage of life critical items are on the agenda for them.  Young children are very fragile emotionally.  If they are mishandled, such as being separated suddenly from a loving parent they may be damaged for life.  Up until adulthood the sense of belonging, being cared for and valued by the adults in the child's life is critical. By late childhood, and the tween and teen years lots of things must go well for each child.  However, in a society that is filled with the drama of school shootings, drugs, alcohol, insufficient mental health care, bullying, body shaming, excessive social media use, things get tough for the individual child.

"We should value and handle our children responsibly:

"As a Parent or Guardian: Nurture your child at each stage of development.  Spend quality time, make sure you stay on top of medical or psychological needs of your child.  Stay involved and available.

"As a Society: 1. Good prenatal care available to all.  2. Safe day care and home care for young children. 3.Schools that are safe. 4. Mental health care easily available for kids of all ages and their families. 5. A recognition as a nation that we care about kids, even others that suddenly show up on our doorstep.  We need to try to keep families together, as a sudden separation can lead to permanent psychological damage to youngsters. 6. An understanding that damaging our most precious gifts to the future takes away a positive future for all.  After all, the person who instigates as school shooting was a child once."

The media is filled with stories that present challenges teens face today. Most slant toward the negative. Body shaming, social media addiction, bullying and horrendous school shootings are just the tip of the iceberg. Melania Trump recently unveiled her "Be Best" that focuses on well-being and takes a stand against cyberbullying. That is a big, first step.

Selfie filmmaker and psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein sees both danger and opportunity in the fact that the current generation no longer watches TV, but watches the phone instead. She believes that provides an opportunity to reach young people with messages, using their medium of choice. Her latest selfie film, 'Conflict', will premiere at the New Jersey International Film Festival at Rutgers University on June 9, 2018.

"I am thrilled to announce that my latest short film 'Conflict' was selected to premiere at the New Jersey International Film Festival at Rutgers University," Dr. Holstein stated. This is a prestigious film festival. 22 films have been accepted from over 520 entries, and mine is one of them.  This is real recognition for my work as a psychologist and a filmmaker. I'm grateful to Megan Brown who once again stars in my Selfie film, doing much of her own filming with her smart phone. Also grateful to film editor Francesco Nuzzi who did such a fabulous job merging Megan's Selfies with traditional film.

"As I think about over 30 years of treating clients, being a school psychologist, doing case study research on women and now being a filmmaker, one thing stands out: Conflict.  What a perfect title for my new film in which a young teen tries to come of age shadowed so many current day problems: drugs, bullies, alcohol, preoccupied parents, etc.

"What do I mean by Conflict? When I did my case study research based on women of all ages, I discovered that they all had the capacity for happiness, to achieve positive states of being again and again, what I call THE ENCHANTED SELF(R), but often not the will, or know how to bring happiness into their lives.  Some of the limitations were placed by society, its legal systems, and biases and some of the limitations for happiness became ingrained in the women as they gave up, or felt obligated to put others first.  Over the years, some of the conflicts for girls and women of all ages have improved: better legal status, more educational doors, such as local, inexpensive two year colleges and improved health care for many.  But for many girls and women, the world of easy access to opportunities just doesn't exist and the results are limiting at best and disastrous at worst.  Some of these  include: mental health disorders, depression often being the most serious leading at times to suicide, drugs, alcohol, early unplanned pregnancies, battering or abuse in families, unfilled dreams and often generation to generation repetition of problems and disappointments.

"Conflicts are complex in society and we suffer the pain of not coming into our own in terms of human potential for many reasons.  Still, it has become my life work and passion to help educate and psychologically teach women of all ages, as well as kids and their parents some of the core principles of happiness.  These principles if understood and practiced will lead to people developing their talents, strengths and potential.  I'm thrilled that Melania Trump is starting #BeBest.  I'm sure she and I share certain understandings about human potential.  Yes, it is critical to start with kids and of course their parents, teachers and relatives.  That's one of the reasons I became a filmmaker. Each small segment of my films, as well as each film as a whole, give rise to discussion and thoughts about what kids need to grow up healthy mentally and socially." 

Dr. Holstein offers several ENCHANTED SELF pointers for you to practice with your own children, grandchildren, or even on yourself:*           

1. Help kids recognize that they are special.  Praise talents and encourage real strengths. Help them appreciate their heritage, and share with them your history, mistakes, successes and a positive sense of their future.  Make little of their failings whenever possible.

2. Help them develop their talents, strengths and potential.  Maybe no one in your family wanted to play the oboe, but your child wishes to and hates sports.  Listen to what works for him or her and help on that path.  There are plenty of other kids who can do whatever your child would prefer not to.

3.Help children in your life get the education and opportunities they need to succeed.  Sometimes that means repeating first grade and sometimes it means helping raise money for that nephew to go to a special soccer camp in the summer.

4.Help kids not go into overload.  Some kids work so hard in school and with after school activities that they don't permit themselves the experience of pleasure and a state of well-being.  Help them have more free time and do fun things that they might not think of doing, whether it is a picnic, bird watching, making a cake from scratch.  Our overly media savvy kids often don't get enough 'old fashioned' time to relax.

Dr. Holstein is currently developing "The Selfie Project" to help kids share their feelings and thoughts in a meaningful way via Selfies that can reach millions.  "The Selfie Project" provides a way for young people to go public on a number of subjects.  Bullying is real, school violence is real, drama because of social media is real for kids.'The Selfie Project' is giving voice to those subjects. A pilot TV show is in the development phase.  Teens will have a chance to discuss via their Selfies and in discussion with Dr. Holstein, various topics that affect their lives, from friend drama to fear of assault weapons. As of this moment, teens can share a link to their Selfies and Dr. Holstein will consider them for inclusion on her website, SelfieFilmmakers.com.

'Secrets' was selected for inclusion in "Passages: Women in Transition," Women In Media - Newark's 2018 Women's History Month film festival,  held on March 27 – April 5, 2018 at Rutgers University Newark, New Jersey, and at various satellite venues in the area.

'Falling in Love, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film, is detailed in a new ebook: 'A Selfie Film - Falling In Love' by Dr. Holstein. This ebook presents issues and stories behind the creation of Dr. Holstein's "selfie films", which utilize cutting edge New Media technology. Topics and questions for discussion can be used by a parent and a child, or a group of hundreds as universal subjects of growing up and handling tough issues are presented. 

Dr. Holstein's new podcast show, THE ENCHANTED SELF PRESENTS, will premiere on May 30th at 7:00 PM.  Live on Facebook at Barbara Becker Holstein, available in many venues, including You Tube and itunes.
