Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history.
For Christians, Lent is the season of preparation before Easter. While many books have been written about Lent, very few thrillers have been written with Lent as an integral part of the storyline. 'A Very Private Grave', Book 1 of the Monastery Murder Mystery Series by award winning author Donna Fletcher Crow, is one of the latter. This combination results in a work Church Libraries Journal called "compelling" and "masterful."
'A Very Private Grave' is a contemporary novel with a thoroughly modern heroine who must learn some age-old truths in order to solve the mystery and save her own life. Felicity Howard, a young American studying in a remote monastery in England, is devastated when she finds her beloved Fr. Dominic bludgeoned to death and Fr. Antony, her church history lecturer, soaked in his blood. She and Fr. Antony must flee a murderer and follow clues across a sacred landscape. The narrative deftly mixes intellectual puzzles, spiritual aspiration, romance and the solving of riddles ancient and modern. It is a double-pronged journey for Felicity: spiritually through Lent and physically through ancient holy sites in northern England.
“I had long wanted to tell the story of these ancient saints in a modern context. When our daughter went off to study theology in a monastery in Yorkshire I knew I had my setting. On my many visits there I became acquainted with their unique life style and spirituality. I hope I have been able to convey some of my love of the beauty and holiness I found there.
“Because I love to work with contrasts introducing a particularly brutal murder offered a way to highlight the peace of the monastery while showing the evil that can lurk in the most unlikely places. Beginning the story on Ash Wednesday was the perfect vehicle to expose this contradiction.”
'A Very Private Grave' has received rave reviews from reviewers and readers alike:
"With a bludgeoned body in Chapter 1, and a pair of intrepid amateur sleuths, A Very Private Grave qualifies as a traditional mystery. But this is no mere formulaic whodunit: it is a Knickerbocker Glory of a thriller. At its centre is a sweeping, page-turning quest -- in the steps of St. Cuthbert -- through the atmospherically-depicted North of England, served up with dollops of Church history and lashings of romance. In this novel, Donna Fletcher Crow has created her own niche within the genre of clerical mysteries." - Kate Charles, author of Deep Waters
"A compelling thriller, as well as a masterful mystery, the mental gymnastics will have you breathlessly soaking in British and church history as you puzzle through a satisfying spiritual adventure with romantic, quirky characters. Anglophiles and history buffs will love it." - Church Libraries Journal
"If I could give this book 6 stars ****** I would. I just couldn't put it down, it was fast paced, I learned lots of church and English history, and I liked the characters. I can't wait for the next Monastery Murder to be published." - Linda from Brisbane, Australia on GoodReads
Other books in the five part series include 'A Darkly Hidden Truth', 'An Unholy Communion', 'A Newly Crimsoned Reliquary' and 'An All-Consuming Fire'.
Donna Fletcher Crow is the author of 45 books, mostly novels of British history. The award-winning 'Glastonbury' is her best-known work, which received the prestigious First Place, Historical Novel, award from the National Federation of Press Women. Readers and reviewers have raved about 'Glastonbury', calling it "The best of its kind," "richly fascinating," "beautifully researched,", "gloriously evocative," and "panoramic." One Amazon reader said, "WHAT a work! Every reader can be enveloped in the sheer scope and quality, every historian be constantly nodding at the precise detail and accuracy, and every Christian can rejoice in the fullness of scripture. For me it is simply beyond descriptive praise. I would urge all who value truth to treat themselves to a feast."

Pioneer Women Propel Events In The Compelling Historical Fiction Trilogy 'Daughters Of Courage' By Award Winning Author Donna Fletcher Crow
Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. Strong women and Crow's own family history form the core of these highly praised historical fiction novels.
Through every generation, America's women have exhibited courage, spirit and faith. While this is especially true today, as evidenced by the stories about strong women making headlines every day, America's past is likewise filled with stories of resolute pioneer women who persevered against seemingly impossible odds.
The pioneer women of early America faced challenges we cannot imagine. These heroically strong women, armed with little more than raw grit and courage, helped to establish America as a leader on the world stage. For this series, an Idaho pioneer family saga, Crow turned to stories of her own family.
“In telling the story of my family and other women through the first half of the 20th century I was fascinated to learn how the challenges faced by our desert pioneer women differed from the more frequently told sodbuster stories. Imagine having your nearest water supply 15 miles away in the Snake River after Indian Creek dried up every spring. Imagine air so dry that laundry done by hand and spread on sagebrush bushes would be dry in 20 minutes—even at night. Imagine your only available fresh meat being jack rabbits—and those maggot-infested.
“Yet, these courageous women didn't merely survive—they triumphed. And, most touching to me, found time at night to sit down and write in their journals—a stirring testimony to the power of literature.”
Donna Fletcher Crow is the author of 45 books, mostly novels of British history. The award-winning 'Glastonbury', an Arthurian grail search epic covering 15 centuries of English history, is her best-known work.
The Lord Danvers series is an Amazon bestseller in the British Detectives category. Books in the series include 'A Lethal Spectre, 'A Most Inconvenient Death', 'Grave Matters', 'To Dust You Shall Return' and 'A Tincture of Murder'.
The Monastery Murders are contemporary clerical mysteries with clues hidden in medieval history. Titles are: 'A Very Private Grave', 'A Darkly Hidden Truth', 'An Unholy Communion', 'A Newly Crimsoned Reliquary', and 'An All-Consuming Fire'.
The Elizabeth & Richard Mysteries is a literary suspense series using favorite authors as background: Rudyard Kipling in 'The Flame Ignites', Dorothy L Sayers in 'The Shadow of Reality', Shakespeare in 'A Midsummer Eve's Nightmare', and Jane Austen in both 'A Jane Austen Encounter' and 'A Most Singular Venture'.
The Daughters of Courage, 'Kathryn', 'Elizabeth' and 'Stephanie' is a pioneer family saga based on the stories of Crow's own family and other Idaho pioneers in the Kuna, Nampa and Boise area.
Where There is Love is a 6-book historical series of the enduring legacy of love and faith—stories of real people and stirring events through 18th and 19th century England.
Readers and reviewers alike have raved about Crow's work, all based on her trademark meticulous research. Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times best-selling author said, "Crow's ability to put the reader into history is remarkable." Lenore Person of Guidepost Books stated about The Daughters of Courage, "It's rare to find novels that combine a strong Christian ethic with such compelling storytelling. Because these are real people and real events, the experiences of faith challenged and faith triumphant are all the more meaningful. I hope that Donna Fletcher Crow's loving testament to her grandmother and mother and to the brave men and women who shaped our country will touch you as much as it did me."

Britain's Re-Told History Of Tragedy And Triumph Offers Hope For UK In 2019 As It Is Torn Apart By Brexit, Says Donna Fletcher Crow, Author Of The Award-Winning, Epic Novel 'Glastonbury'
To gain the future, Crow says, Britons must reclaim the past. A perspective from history can be an enormous help in holding to hope for the challenges of the present situation.
British history, forged and tempered in triumph and tragedies of every kind, has spawned a culture unlike any other on Earth. The United Kingdom has proven to be one of the most resilient nations that has ever existed, producing the largest empire ever known. Having seen more than her fair share of dark times, whether the Middle Ages, civil wars, revolutions or Brexit, Great Britain has always triumphed. Donna Fletcher Crow, novelist of British history, has given us a tantalizing and very rich taste of a good deal of that history in her epic novel 'Glastonbury'.
A careful observer of British current events as well as history, Crow commented on the ongoing anxiety over Brexit in a recent interview: “I would never presume to tell Britons what to do on the issues. My desire is to give hope for daily life through an understanding of history. The most vital thing I learned in studying 1,500 years of British history while writing Glastonbury is that no matter how dark events seem today, it has been much darker in times past—and the Light has always triumphed. People and leaders, however, must look for that Light and be open to it, as they have been through the ages.”
Crow said that one example to which she often points is the time King Alfred spent on the Isle of Athelney in 878. Driven into the marshes by Viking invaders, Alfred, his family and a tiny band of retainers were all that remained of the English court. Yet that spring Alfred found courage to send out the hosting call. His warriors responded and were victorious in the Battle of Ethandun. The peace held and led to a great flowering of the nation under Alfred the Great.
“I firmly believe such a prospering can come again if we keep the faith and look to the Light on the other side of the darkness,” Crow concluded.
‘Glastonbury’, which received the prestigious First Place, Historical Novel, award from the National Federation of Press Women, is written in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history. It recounts how Joseph of Arimathea and his little band of pilgrims, seeking asylum from Roman persecution, fled to Glastonbury—and carried with them the most sacred relic in all of Christendom, the holy grail. Later, this tiny, sheltered corner of Britannia—this holy "Isle of Avalon"—was also a place of refuge when King Arthur and his knights fought off the invaders who would destroy their civilization. Later it became Arthur's final resting place.
Centuries on, the discovery of Arthur's bones in Glastonbury sparked a great flowering of the faith and the building of a magnificent abbey—after a devastating fire nearly obliterated the work and worship of centuries.
Then, after the last abbot of Glastonbury was dragged to his death atop the Tor, the Abbey's splendid arches were left to crumble. Yet they stand today—as beacons of hope for a renewed future.

A "Royal" Christmas Wedding In An English Monastery Is The Subject Of 'An All-Consuming Fire' By Donna Fletcher Crow, Award Winning Author Of British History
Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history.
A Christmas wedding in a monastery--what could be more idyllic? Given the public's intense fascination with the marriage ceremonies of British royalty, we might be hard pressed to find a more appealing story idea. Donna Fletcher Crow, award winning author of British history, deftly blends all of these elements into a murder mystery that is as entertaining as it is informative. The end result is 'An All-Consuming Fire', Book 5 in The Monastery Murders series.
In the storyline of this intriguing novel, Felicity has never been happier, in spite of her over-bearing mother who wants to turn her wedding into a royal affair, and Antony's worries over the television series he is narrating on the English Mystics. Then Felicity takes on responsibility for directing an Epiphany pageant for Kirkthorpe's wayward youth.
At least most of the vexing disruptions occurring on the filming locations are miles away from the Community of the Transfiguration. Until the threats move closer. Close enough to threaten Felicity's life.
Will the murderer stalking the Yorkshire Moors shatter the joy of Felicity and Antony's Christmas wedding?
“I always try to make it a hallmark of my writing never to write about a place I haven’t explored personally. In the case of 'An All-Consuming Fire', however, I think I reached a new level,” Crow said in a recent interview.
“For all of the Monastery Murders I have used as background the experiences my daughter had studying theology in an English monastery. When she and her soon-to-be-priested fiancé announced a Christmas wedding, I knew this would be more than mere background.
“Like Felicity’s mother, I arrived in Yorkshire with my head full of visions of royal events. After all, what else did I know about English weddings? I like to think I wasn’t quite as difficult as Mother of the Bride Cynthia, but I found myself in complete sympathy with her frustrations.
“I was able to ‘tell it like it was’ in a novel where almost everything is factual—except the murder.”
Donna Fletcher Crow is the author of 45 books, mostly novels of British history. The award-winning 'Glastonbury', an Arthurian grail search epic covering 15 centuries of English history, is her best-known work.

"Donna Fletcher Crow does it again! I love the way she intertwined Church History, liturgical church, mystery, and a very modern love story."
"Another excellent chapter in the Felicity saga. I always enjoy the historical and location references in each volume that give such a sense of place. Donna Fletcher Crow is one of my favorite fiction authors."

Donna Fletcher Crow, Award Winning Novelist of British History, Announces Release Of 'A Lethal Spectre', Latest In The Lord Danvers Investigates Series
Crow writes meticulously researched, entertaining novels of romance, history and mystery in an engaging you-are-there style that allows readers to live the history.
Multi-award winning author Donna Fletcher Crow has announced the release of the fifth book in the Lord Danvers Victorian true-crime series, A Lethal Spectre. The series contrasts the elegance of Victorian aristocracy set against the dark underworld of drug addiction.
In A Lethal Spectre, Lord and Lady Danvers are swept up in the glittering swirl of a London season as they present the Dowager Duchess of Aethelbert's ward to society. In India Lady Danver's closest girlhood friend is caught in the most brutal massacre 'in the book of time'. What could these disparate events have to do with murders in London and Brighton? This engrossing story comes to life with all the vivid historical detail readers expect from Donna Fletcher Crow.
To celebrate the release of A Lethal Spectre Crow is giving away copies of book four in the series, A Tincture of Murder. No-charge downloads of the book are available at her website.
"I am passionate about recounting events of history because I’m really writing about today," Crow said. "I am continually fascinated to see how events in today’s headlines have their roots in the past. In A Lethal Spectre I found London’s opium dens and the East India Company’s opium trade reflecting today’s tragic opioid epidemic.
"I also love working with contrasts. In A Lethal Spectre I was captured by the stark contrast of the elegance of London society and the horrors of the Indian mutiny. One of the greatest challenges of telling this story was tracking society events and mutiny events in a day-to-day parallel. I was able to do this through an invaluable archive of British newspapers."
The Lord Danvers series is an Amazon bestseller in the British Detectives category. Other books in the series include A Most Inconvenient Death, Grave Matters, To Dust You Shall Return and A Tincture of Murder.

Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times best-selling author said, "Crow's ability to put the reader into history is remarkable." Christine Lindsay, author of the multi-award-winning trilogy Twilight of the British Raj stated, "As somewhat of an expert on Colonial British India, A Lethal Spectre swept me away with mystery set in beautifully detailed Victorian England and in India, showcasing an integral piece of history that greatly affected Great Britain. A must read for all Anglophiles and cozy mystery lovers."
