Best-selling Canadian author Terezia Farkas offers strategies for dealing with depression, encouragement and hope in her latest best-selling book about depression, 'Heart Of Love Evolution'
Holidays are a special time of year for many reasons. For some people however the Holiday season is a time when depression hits hardest. This may be the result of anxiety, stress or increased responsibility. For many the primary cause of depression is loneliness. Best-selling Canadian author Terezia Farkas offers strategies for dealing with depression, encouragement and hope in her latest best-selling book about depression, 'Heart Of Love Evolution'. She is uniquely qualified to offer tips to avoid the Holiday depression trap. Here are 6 tips Terezia offers for the holiday season
1. Connect. Call over friends. One will do fine, because the goal is for you to have supportive, non-judgemental support. Talk to your neighbour. You’ll be surprised that a neighbour can become a close friend. Even pets stave off loneliness. If depression starts feeling severe, seek professional support.
2. No Shame. We’re scared of what people will think about us. Stigma keeps us from talking with others about what hurts. Don’t be embarrassed. Depression isn’t just a mental disease, it’s a whole body illness like cancer. Depression affects 1 in 4 so chances are someone you know also suffers with depression.
3. Expect the bad, accept the good. Expect bad emotional days. Accept any day or moment that’s good. If you usually cry every morning or don’t feel like getting up, accept that’s how you’ll be during the holidays. But don’t expect that’s how the rest of the day will go. Life can feel good so enjoy those moments and let yourself feel happy.
4. Avoid Family Drama. People don’t change who they are overnight. Nor will they suddenly love you or want to be your friend. Family drama only diminishes your self-esteem, isolates you, and leaves you feeling more alone than before. Be realistic and know that others are bringing personal baggage to the party.
5. You First. Need alone time? Take it! Be gentle with yourself. Treat yourself first. Give yourself permission to feel miserable or to cry. Accept practical help when offered. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Let others lift some of the load off your shoulders.
6. Grieve. Grief shouldn’t be hidden. Discuss with others the triggers that upset you or conversations that offend you. Let them know its okay to say the name of the deceased. Honour your loved one by doing things you did together or set an extra seat at the table.
Terezia Farkas never imagined that she would attempt suicide until she slipped deeper and deeper into a state of desperation and depression. Her attempted suicides were a slow wake-up call that she needed to love herself. Her example shows that overcoming depression, while challenging, is not impossible.
Terezia was strong enough to survive her dark nights of the soul. She turned her life around by looking for the light within her experiences and through loving herself. She eventually found her soul path that at the end led her to a higher level of being and self-love. Terezia's message of hope and self-love shows that those who suffer from depression can go past the pain and hopelessness and can end up recovering from depression. Terezia has come back from the brink to create a new life centered upon helping others overcome depression.
Terezia is now an International Bestselling author, Huffington Post regular contributor, and columnist. Her ‘Depression Help’ on Beliefnet focuses on mental health. She is involved with CDRIN (Canadian Depression Research and Intervention Network) and created her own fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association. She was invited to attend the Global Crisis of Depression Summit offered by The Economist at Kings Place in London on November 25, 2014.

The Link Between Depression And Anger - Award Winning Author Terezia Farkas Explains The Connection
Studies show that young people are especially prone to a vicious cycle of depression and anger that can result in rage. This can have devastating, lifelong effects that can and does destroy lives, careers and families
Depression is debilitating and can have lasting effects. A recent study by the University of Alberta, published in The University Herald, found that depression and anger in youth can adversely affect marriages and careers later in life. We need but look at today's headlines to become aware of the seemingly inexplicable instances of unfocused rage and senseless violence that is inflicted upon innocent victims worldwide. Are depression and anger linked? In a recent Huffington post article, Terezia Farkas, award-winning author of "Heart Of Love Evolution" made a strong case for the fact that depression and anger go hand in hand. She knows, as she is one of those who suffered through both and came out the other side healed and whole.
“Anger is a big part of depression. I know because I’ve been through it. We see someone who is angry and moody and think, ‘Irrational. Emotional. What’s going on?” We don’t consider that the person might be depressed because all we are confronted by is anger.
Anger is a reaction to pain. It’s also a reaction to a hopeless or frustrating situation. Anger is insidious, cycling rage and defeat. You don’t believe you’re irrational. You believe that no one understands you. Your world becomes a plastic remnant of what it used to be, bouncing back all pain. It hurts you to look at people who have no idea or understanding of how you feel. You can’t remember when someone tried to help you or spoke kindly when you felt hurt or alone. You give up hope that anyone will or can help you.
Rage is a denial of any thought that speaks of future possibilities for you. You feel like you can’t go on to your future because you’ve lost control of yourself, of your life and of
everything. Something has to happen or change now because there’s no more time to wait. So you lash out at family and friends for not believing as you do.
You can’t escape or get out of the way of rage. It’s a fire rampaging through your soul,
burning you up. It consumes and haunts you. It severs your connection to family and friends. It eats away at your heart which held love, joy and hope.
You are left with the furious beating of the heart, of the mind, and of the soul against which it sees as an invisible barrier between itself and others. People are frightened, confused and even angry at you. They don’t know how to cope with someone who is so angry. Their lives are busy and they don’t have time to figure you out. Most of them abandon you and you judge this as a further injustice to you. The more isolated you become, the more rage victimizes you. You start thinking that you don’t like those people, that you hate them, and so you don’t need them. They don’t love you. You are alone. You isolate yourself until very few people actually want to be around you.
Depressed and angry is different than just being angry. I understand that now. Anger is the last emotional foothold you have before slipping into suicidal thoughts. Anger is the first emotion you’ll experience crawling out of your hell. The need to identify, understand and treat anger as part of depression is important in healing the person.”
In ‘Heart Of Love Evolution’, Terezia Farkas presents a powerful and compelling story that offers hope to those who suffer from depression. Growing up with an emotionally abusive alcoholic father, and a mother dying from cancer, Terezia stepped into the role of caregiver and homemaker at an early age. When her mother died, Terezia went from grief to depression and attempted suicides. Terezia's deepening despair made her not only question the meaning of her life, but also contemplate other elements that contributed to her state of depression.
Tom Shand, Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division recently stated, "In 'Heart of Love Evolution – Surviving Depression', Ms. Farkas shares her journey of recovery from deadly depths of depression, guided by newfound hope and spirituality. It is well written and the expression of her experiences with depression will resonate well with people, as will the emphasis on self love and hope. I commend her for her desire to help others through this book, including donating a portion of proceeds from its sale to the Canadian Mental Health Association. The spiritual beliefs are those of the author and may or may not align with those of the readers or other theories."

Terezia Farkas, Author Of Book About Depression, Partners With Canadian Mental Health Association To Raise Funds
From March 1 through March 15, 2014, bestselling author Terezia Farkas will donate 50% of all author royalties from sales of 'Heart Of Love Evolution: Surviving Depression' to the Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta
Terezia Farkas, bestselling author of 'Heart Of Love Evolution: Surviving Depression' has pledged 50% of all author royalties to the Canadian Mental Health Association Alberta. Entitled 'Action On Depression’, the fundraising project will run from March 1 through March 15, 2014. Readers can participate in the fundraiser by purchasing the book from Amazon, Friesen Press or from any Chapters/Indigo or Coles bookstore.
“I want to reduce the stigma surrounding depression with my fundraiser,” says Ms. Farkas. “By hosting a mental health event, I am encouraging discussion and education about depression. There is still a lot of stigma and myths about depression. Sometimes it’s just a case of not knowing how to correctly deal with someone depressed or suicidal. Other times it’s about cultural norms and moral implications.”
“I know how difficult it can be for a depressed person to ask for help. Depression makes you embarrassed, ashamed and afraid to talk about it. Since coming out publicly with my personal struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, I’ve heard from many others who are depressed. All of them had been afraid or cautious to tell anyone that they suffer depression. For some I was a role model. For others it was my book ‘Heart of Love Evolution’ that gave them a starting point to have discussions with family about depression, suicide and death. Sometimes you need a person you can identify with, someone who got lost in that darkness of despair much like you, to give hope that you too can make it out.”
“Organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and Mental Health America in the US are good places to go for help and support. These are non-profit agencies with the same mandate: to promote good mental health through advocacy, education, research and service. Every year more than 400 Albertans commit suicide. For every suicide, there are more than a hundred attempts. Alberta’s suicide rate is the second highest in Canada. While suicide is one of the leading causes of death in men and women, almost 50% who suffer from depression never go to a doctor.”

Depression And Assisted Suicide: Terezia Farkas, Author Of Book About Depression, Issues Statement
An Alberta judge recently sentenced an American to 8 months for assisting her mother's suicide. Terezia Farkas, author of 'Heart Of Love Evolution - Surviving Depression', believes Alberta law punishes, but does not deter suicide
American citizen Linda McNall was recently sentenced to 8 months in Alberta, Canada for helping her seriously ill mother commit suicide. The suicide of her mother was a part of a mother/daughter suicide pact gone awry. McNall survived the suicide attempt and was arrested after showing up at a nearby Canadian hospital.
“The story of Ms McNall is distressing on several levels,” stated Ms. Farkas. “At the most basic level it is the story of a person struggling against depression and losing that battle. The decision to commit suicide is a very difficult one. You are so hopeless and despairing, you have a sense that only death can bring you peace and happiness. To survive a suicide attempt is miraculous. But instead of being met with appreciation that she was still alive, Ms McNall was arrested, judged and then dumped back into society without any long term emotional supports or life-line to mental help.”
“If we simply consider the issue as one about suicide, the Alberta law punishes, not deters, suicide. Suicide becomes a moral judgment. This law tells people suicide is wrong. If you survive, you will be prosecuted.”
“Recently the suicide of Christopher Peloso, husband of ex-cabinet minister George Smitherman, brought about a national discussion of suicide and its social stigma. Mr. Smitherman rightly declared that he was not ashamed or afraid to talk about Christopher’s suicide. Bell Canada has its annual Let’s Talk day on January 28 when Canadians are encouraged to talk openly about depression. Yet in the case of Ms. McNall, there was no conversation. Alberta judged her as a criminal and then deported her to the United States knowing there was no mental help waiting for her.”
“McNall is still considered to be a suicide risk. The request for a direct hospital to hospital transfer was not accepted. McNall only has a few weeks supply of anti-depressants. With no real family connections and no money, McNall may end up in a woman’s shelter if she’s lucky. More likely McNall will be on the street. Currently 60%, or 6 out of 10, Americans with mental illness do not receive treatment for their condition because they are uninsured, leaving no option for mental health care except in emergency departments. In November 2013 the Affordable Care Act’s Parity rules were finally enacted years after being signed into law by President George W. Bush. For McNall those rules still have not given her the mental health care she desperately needs or deserves. “
“There is an instinct, a need to hide depression. But when you are depressed you need to talk about it. When you get quiet, that’s the time you want to die. You have a quiet thought out plan that makes complete sense to you. That’s when you walk out the door one night and go missing, or try to poison yourself with propane gas. In McNall’s case, two people decided that their pain was unbearable. The mental anguish it took to agree to suicide, to make the trip, breathe in that one last good moment, and then say goodbye forever to this world is something most people cannot comprehend. It is the darkness, the inescapable despair and torment that depression brings to a person.”

Politicians Who Suffer From Depression: Terezia Farkas, Author Of Book Dealing With Depression, Issues Statement
Over 17 million Americans are dealing with depression - over 9 million of them are classified as clinical or major. Depression can strike anyone - including politicians. Best-selling Canadian author Terezia Farkas offers strategies for dealing with depression, encouragement and hope in her latest best-selling book about depression, 'Heart Of Love Evolution'
When we think about dealing with depression, politicians are not the first people to come to mind. In a recent article in Canada's Toronto Star (thestar.com), Bob Rae, the Liberal MP and former Ontario premier talked about his experience with depression. In the same article Phil Upshall, National Director of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada stated that he knows of several members of the current cabinet who suffer from depression. The article also mentions the 2009 suicide of Dave Batters, former conservative MP from Saskatchewan.
“Overcoming depression” stated Ms. Farkas, “needs hope, courage and self-love. When you are regularly mocked or humiliated, your self-esteem cracks. You lose hope and courage. People don’t respond to mental injuries because the wound is not seen. So you start breaking down and forget that the pain you feel can and will pass. That’s the battered and broken soul. Depression is a desire to end the pain and the struggle to do so. It is the darkness that binds everyone - politicians included - who has given up hope, who believes that no one cares for them, and who think that suicide is the only way out.”
Terezia Farkas, author of the best-selling depression memoir 'Heart of Love Evolution - Surviving Depression', never imagined that she would attempt suicide until she slipped deeper and deeper into a state of desperation and depression. Her attempted suicides were a slow wake-up call that she needed to love herself. Her example shows that overcoming depression, while challenging, is not impossible.
“The most important thing to keep in mind when battling depression," Farkas stated, "is to love yourself. I’m talking about the healthy self-love where you say I love who I am. I believe in myself. If you can do that and remind yourself daily, then lying down and dying is no longer an option.”
