Diamante Daniel is 12 years old and has created a fascinating look at how climate change affects endangered species, and what we can do about it

Diamante Daniel has announced the release of 'It Starts With A Change - Endangered Animals And Climate Change In Pennsylvania'.

Climate change. What do we imagine when we hear the words? Increasing temperatures? Rising sea levels and flooded cities? Drought that causes starvation of millions of people? Many books have been written about the impact of climate change on people’s health and well-being. What is less well known is that climate change may impact animals around us, not only in some far off place but those living near us, in our home states or countries. Amongst them, the most vulnerable are those already endangered. 

Diamante focuses on the precious endangered animals that live in Pennsylvania, her home state, and presents factual information regarding what will happen if climate change occurs in the PA region. She also lays out why readers should care and what they can do about it.

Diamante fully covers all the bases, including animals that live in the wetlands, grass, forests, water and caves. The endangered animals covered in the book include mammals, birds and fish.

"I love animals, and I don't want to lose any single one of them," Diamante stated. "I believe we can save all of the species, if we do what is needed."

Diamante Daniel is a 7th grade student at the Wissahickon School District, Ambler, Pennsylvania. She published her first book, Rocks And Stones Around The World, when she was 10 years old and attended 4th grade. She is the winner, together with her sister, of the international MPACGroup Top Design Award 2016 of the Cubes in Space Program for the design of an experiment, which measures the intraocular pressure during the ascending phase of a rocket flight. Students from 22 countries participated in this competition. Her experiment was launched into space on the CIS SR-3 mission June 24, 2016 from the NASA Wallops Facility. Additional experiments designed by her were launched by a NASA stratospheric balloon from Fort Sumner, New Mexico in September 2016, and again on rocket mission in June 2017 from the NASA Wallops Facility.

Dagmar And Diamante Daniel Take Top Design Award In 2016 Cubes In Space™ Program

The winning entry was a joint entry by Dagmar (age 12) and Diamante (age 11), sisters who designed an experiment to measure intraocular pressure in astronauts' eyes during the initial phase of rocket flights

Sisters Dagmar and Diamante Daniel of the Wissahickon School District in Pennsylvania took the Top Design Award in the third annual Cubes In Space™ Program. The award is given each year to the person whose design is selected at the best overall design. About 500 experiments from 22 countries were submitted to the program. The most interesting and well-designed proposals were selected to fly on a rocket from NASA Wallops Facility. The goal of the Cubes In Space™ program is to help young people learn to problem-solve and to learn skills and develop interests that will help them succeed in the future. Students from all over the world can benefit from the program, regardless of gender, race, religion or nationality. Every year, one of the experiments, receives the Top Design award.

This year, the winning experiment was designed to measure the effect of acceleration/G forces on intraocular pressure (IOP).

During the initial phase of the spaceflight, the crews are exposed to acceleration/G forces. It is well known that the increased pressure on the human or animal body can have negative effects, such as damage to the vision. This damage is generally assumed to be due to burst blood vessels. What is less well known is that even in the absence of blood vessels, the increased pressure in the human eye (termed intraocular pressure, IOP), can lead to eye damage.  Even a mildly increased IOP can a lead to eye diseases such as glaucoma, and retinal detachment. This is particularly important as older people fly, when the risk from increased IOP is higher than in young healthy people (IOP of many older people is already on the high end of the normal range). Does IOP increase during the acceleration phase of a rocket flight? This type of measurement is really difficult to perform in real time. In other words, physicians would need to place their instruments on an eye of an astronaut during the acceleration phase of the flight, or implant IOP probes into the astronaut’s eye. At the same time, knowledge whether and how much IOP increases during a space flight is extremely useful. If IOP does increase, then all potential astronauts at risk should be placed on IOP-lowering medications or excluded from flight. Alternatively, IOP should be taking into consideration when designing new rockets and flight paths, and flight paths with the least risk of increased IOP should be taken. Therefore, we need to know how IOP changes during the spaceflight in order to protect human health.

The experiment was designed to answer two questions: (1) Does IOP change during the acceleration phase of the space flight? (2) How does one measure IOP on a rocket?

To measure IOP, the young researchers designed a model of the human eye, which they then placed into a 4 cm x 4cm x 4cm cube, which was provided by the Cubes in Space program.

Both girls were very proud of their achievement. Dagmar stated, "It was a great honor to receive this award." Diamante said, "I am very proud of participating in this project, flying it into space and receiving the award too."

Cubes in Space™ is the only program in the world that gives students a no-cost opportunity to design experiments to be launched into space on a NASA rocket or balloon. The program is structured around 5 components - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. This enables kids to learn about space exploration utilizing innovative problem-solving learning methods. As stated on the Cubes In Space site™, both students and educators "are provided with engaging content and activities in preparation for the design and development of an experiment to be integrated into a small cubes launched into space via sounding rocket from NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia." Since inception the programs has had had over 5000 participants from 37 countries.

10 Year Old Girl Releases New Book About Rocks And Stones, 'Rocks And Stones Around The World'

The new book covers 51 rocks from 7 continents and regions and unveils fascinating and little known facts about these stones

Author Diamante Daniel is pleased to announce the release of 'Rocks And Stones Around The World'. The new book covers 51 rocks from 7 continents and regions around the world. It details little known facts about these stones and includes stories related to the stones.  Those who like books may find this one very intriguing, as the author is only 10 years old. She is right in the middle of her fourth grade. Here is what she says about herself:

"I like rocks and gemstone,” Diamante says. "I started collecting rocks when I was five years old.  I went on many rock collecting trips with my grandpa.  He wrote six books about towns and villages in the region that he lives in.  This way, he shares his love of towns and villages with people that live in his country, but he never wrote a book about rocks.  This gave me an idea.  Why can’t I write a book too?  Now I can tell everybody about my rocks and gems. Writing the book was harder than I imagined, but I kept doing it, until I finished. I started when I was nine. It took me ten months and I just turned ten. My book came out shortly after my birthday.”

"My book is about rocks and gems from all over the world.  They are organized by a continent or a region where they are mostly found. Readers can see 51 rocks and gems from seven continents and regions and 170 colored photos and pictures. They will learn where the rock names came from and the wonderful stories that are related to each of them. Do you know which rock was so valuable that the Emperor of Mongolia offered a whole city for it? Do you know which gem carried a curse so strong that it had to be split into three pieces to break the curse? Do you know which rock floats? Do you know which rocks can be found only in the United States?

“I learned a lot when working on the book.  I thought I knew a lot about rocks but it wasn’t enough information.  It was hard to find websites to get what I needed, but my sister showed me how.  I didn’t have a lot of my own pictures, but I went on Wikimedia to get pictures that other people took and they were kind enough to let me use them.  I learned how to do research and that science can be fun.”

While many adults find writing and publishing book a challenge today, Diamante had a bit of an advantage, in that her father is Rene Daniel, a successful author of a number of fantasy novels. Rene guided Diamante through the writing and publishing of 'Rocks And Stones Around The World'.  “When I finished my writing and got all the pictures I needed, he showed me how to organize and format everything into a book,” says Diamante.
