Award Winning Author Donna Fletcher Crow Discusses Sir Frances Drake Prayer, Announces New Historical Fiction Book And Upcoming Jane Austen Video

In her most recent video "Jane Austen From Paradise To Portsmouth" Donna Fletcher Crow discussed the central role faith played in the lives of Jane Austen's naval brothers.This is also a paramount point in a blog available at her website focused on the Naval Prayer, traditionally attributed to Sir Frances Drake.The post was inspired by a talk she attended, given by Gordon Laco entitled "Life at Sea in the Royal Navy in Jane Austen's Time." Laco was Technical and historical advisor for the movie “Master and Commander” as well as for more than 60 other projects for movies and the BBC.

Crow said in a recent interview, “I was fascinated to learn of the great legacy of the Naval Prayer, attributed by strong tradition to Sir Francis Drake, and the historic role it played in the Royal Navy and later in the Royal Canadian Navy. It was particularly captivating when Gordon Laco took off his hat and pulled out the folded prayer he always wore there when serving as Captain aboard an historic vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy.

“The prayer was read every Sunday when Jane Austen’s two brothers, who both rose to the rank of Admiral, served in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars. My research uncovered 2 other prayers, of somewhat shaky provenance, attributed to Drake. The Naval Prayer shared by Laco, however, is well known and very well respected, and is attributed to Drake in Navy history. I found the prayer and the tradition around it very moving and am delighted for this opportunity to make it known to a wider audience.”

Donna's new video series now has a second installment in production. In the new video, "Jane Austen From Paradise to Lyme Regis," Crow, (in the persona of Jane Austen), gives viewers a guided tour of Jane’s favorite seaside resort—Lyme (at that time not distinguished with the Regis title). “Jane” will read from letters she wrote to her sister Cassandra, describing a “delightful” time bathing and the assembly ball she attended, as well as her problems with the servants. She will read from her novel ‘Persuasion’, as she takes viewers to the Cobb, Captain Harville’s cottage, and other sites in her last completed novel before she went to Paradise.

Crow also announced a new edition of 'The Fields of Bannockburn’, Book One, The Celtic Cross Epics. This will be the first print edition in over a quarter of a century and will appear as an ebook for the first time. The book was chosen as Best Historical Novel 1996 by the American Federation of Press Women.

Jane Austen Video Series To Be Produced By Award Winning Author Donna Fletcher Crow, Novelist Of British History

Award winning author Donna Fletcher Crow has announced a new Jane Austen video series. Titled "Jane Austen: From Paradise to ...", the series will take viewers to various locations associated with Jane Austen, her books and the Austen family. "When closures continued this year, I agreed to give the talk originally scheduled for the 2020 Portsmouth BookFest as a Zoom event for 2021. As the idea developed, I decided to let Jane speak for herself and give the whole talk in her persona.

"On the day, the event was gratifyingly successful, but the hoped-for recording was not. This led to my producing the entire talk as a video on my own.

"And thereby was born a new career avenue. I enjoyed the experience so much I have decided to produce a series of videos on “Jane Austen: From Paradise to...”

In the first video, Jane talks about scenes that were important to her family such as the Royal Naval Academy her brothers attended, and Spithead where her brothers' boats awaited their orders to sail and where Fanny's brother William in Mansfield Park was to report.

Jane shares from her letters, such as when she teases Cassandra about the arrival of Czar Alexander I of Russia at Portsmouth for a Naval review. She reads scenes from Mansfield Park including Fanny Price and Henry Crawford's encounter with Mr. Price on the High Street and their subsequent visit to the Dockyard.

Crow said in a recent interview: “I am so excited about this new venture. I found that doing the research and writing the script from Jane’s viewpoint gave me a whole new outlook on the material. I no longer felt like a 21st century visitor looking back, but more as if I were really experiencing the events in the Regency.

“And there are so many places to visit through Jane Austen’s eyes: All the homes she lived in; her favorite seashore spas, starting with Lyme Regis; and countless London sites. My hope is that scores of Austen fans will find new inspiration in watching my videos.”

A Google search on “best books for Christmas” returns just over 3.6 million listings. There is a lot of interest in Christmas books, and for good reason. Christmas and books just seem to go together somehow. Giving and receiving books as Christmas gifts is a universal Western tradition, as no movie, television show, radio drama or podcast could ever provide the immersive getaway experience that a good Christmas book can provide.

Unlike years gone by, finding the time to kick back, relax and read a Christmas book might be difficult in our modern day rush-rush-rush of Holiday preparation, shopping, Christmas gatherings and office parties. This year is different however, as this might be the only year in recent memory in which we actually have time to enjoy a leisurely read – one that can take us away from pandemics, travel restrictions, political upheavals, and all the rest. “For all of my adult life I have had a cherished fantasy. I see myself, with all my preparations done, lying on the sofa in front of the Christmas tree reading a Christmas novel. No matter that it never happens, I continue to hold to the shining image.

“2020 just might be the year. In spite of all the frustrations—and for some people real tragedies—of Covid-19, all the enforced closures and restrictions have given many of us more time. Perhaps enough time, even, to read a Christmas novel in front of a decorated tree.

“With that happy thought in mind—and we do need happy thoughts these days—I’m delighted to recommend some of my favorite seasonal reads.

“My annual daydream began way back in 1972 when Marjorie Holmes published “Two From Galilee.” This charming re-telling of the traditional Christmas story is the first of a trilogy by Holmes and has become something of a classic.

“Anne Perry is one of my perennially favorite authors. Her cozy Victorian mystery novels always deliver well-developed characters and well-researched history. Perry began in 2004 with “A Christmas Journey,” a seasonal novella featuring Vespasia Cumming-Gould from the Thomas Pitt series. This year Perry offers her 18th holiday novella, “A Christmas Resolution,” featuring Inspector Monk's right-hand man and his new wife. In each one, she draws from her rich stock of minor characters, featuring them in new locations and situations outside her regular series.

The Covid-19 virus has forced many of us to take extreme measures to protect ourselves. We've been forced to cover up, maintain our distance from others and hunker down in our homes.

A recent article in the entertainment section of Time Magazine put forth the premise that many of television's strongest female leads share one flaw - they make terrible decisions because of men. The article presented examples from a number of popular TV shows including 'Scandal', 'Homeland’, ‘Revenge', 'Game of Thrones', 'The Newsroom', 'Friday Night Lights' and 'Lost'. Women In Healthcare Salary Discrepancies Still An Issue - Dr. Darden North Issues Statement

Male physicians continue to make more than female physicians. Some researchers believe that gap is widening. Award winning author Dr. Darden North uses this ongoing issue as a plot point in his newest novel, 'Wiggle Room'

As quoted in The Gupta Guide by Sanjay Gupta MD, a recent letter in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that male physicians averaged over $56,000 more per year than female physicians for the years 2006-2010.

"The disparity in annual income," Dr. North stated, "between male and female physicians is sometimes reflective of the workload or ‘man’ hours spent treating patients. However, from a personal perspective, there are other factors such as the incomes of the patient population itself --termed 'the payor mix' by healthcare financial analysts. In my fourth and current novel 'Wiggle Room,' surgeon Diana Bratton finds herself underpaid not because she is a woman or because her patients will not pay their bills, but because she is overworked. One of her senior physician partners is murdered, and she must take up the slack. I used this financial burden placed on Bratton as character conflict that propels her to find the killer of not only the handsome young physician in her Mississippi community but patients as well."

However, if those variables are factored in and do not explain any inequity in male verses female physician compensation packages, then the unfair salary differences must be corrected on a one-on-one basis.”
