Dr. Holstein, positive psychologist, author, filmmaker, developer of The Enchanted Self and now 'The Selfie Project' is taking on serious society issues at every level by raising the consciousness of all of us on a variety of topics.

Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein's films have received a huge number of industry awards. She recently announced that her latest and most powerful film about school shootings, 'Lock Down', took Honorable Mention in the Los Angeles Independent Shorts Awards for Best Children's Short and Best Trailer/Teaser. What is on the minds of kids today, creating tremendous anxiety and worse reactions, are the lock downs in our schools. Kids are now faced on a daily basis with the possibility of an active shooter in their school. 'Lock Down' dramatically illustrates the fear and anxiety that kids deal with. Lock downs are one of the most pressing mental health problems American society faces. A recent article in the New York Times entitled 'Fight if You Must: Students Take a Front-Line Role in School Shootings' perfectly summed this problem up in a single, perfectly written paragraph - "Drills for what to do during a shooting have become routine in schools across the nation, in some cases for children as young as in kindergarten. Most students have not been taught to directly confront shooting suspects, but rather to focus on what they must do to remain safe. Some young people, however, appear to have closely followed past massacres and concluded that they cannot wait for a teacher or security officer to protect them."

School Shootings And Lockdowns: How To Help Overcome The Anxiety Suffered By Kids - Positive Psychologist Barbara Becker Holstein

Dr. Holstein, a Positive Psychologist/filmmaker and originator of a unique Selfie Film concept, is making her latest film, 'Lockdown', available to parents and educators.

Our young people face challenges we cannot imagine. A recent youth poll published by the Harvard Institute Of Politics found that "Half of young Americans experience anxiety, and it is correlated with views related to state of our nation." Small wonder. Our nation seems to downplay climate change and gun control, two issues that have a direct effect on the anxiety level of young people. These are issues that threaten their very lives. Nowhere is this more evident than in the anxiety level experienced by young children in lockdown situations across the country.

Imagine an alarm blaring and a PA announcement that tells you to crawl under a piece of furniture, turn out all the lights and be silent as gunshots come closer and closer just outside the door. Can we even imagine the anxiety that must produce? No, yet our children are exposed to it, some many times, in a place where they should feel safe.

What do we say to our children? How do we say it? Positive Psychologist and award-winning selfie filmmaker Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein has the answers to those questions.

"A recent story on the Washington Post website detailed some of the psychological effects school lockdowns create in school age children," Holstein stated. "The story was as heartbreaking as it was eye-opening. Some young children weep with terror. Others write final messages to family members - and worse.

"Our children do not deserve to be subjected to such horrific lockdown situations in places where they should feel safe. Sadly though, it is necessary. Therefore the question we must ask ourselves as parents, grandparents and educators is - 'What can we do to help them?'

"We must help our children feel comfortable expressing their emotions, from joyous to despairing. Typically it is easy to be delighted and happy when kids express delight and are in a good mood. However when a child is cross, or pouting, crying over ‘nothing’ or having some sort of meltdown we are less resourceful as adults. We yell, we put down, we try punishments. Often we are unsuccessful.

"Kids have dark emotions just as we do. Kids hear the news and watch TV. They are fully aware of what it means to have an 'active shooter' in a school. Most of us never had to worry about our safety once we entered the school building. In fact, for many, school was seen as a kind of sanctuary, a place away from a dysfunctional family, or a place with a great library and a free lunch and even milk in the morning.

"Kids today often see school as a kind of battlefield. Their nerves are on edge. Will there be a shouting today? Will it be my school this time? Often kids don’t know how to express their anxiety successfully. As a psychologist I recognize the importance of venting the more difficult emotions and thoughts we experience.

"One way to get started is to encourage your child to make a Selfie video on what is on her mind about school. Then watch it together, if your child is comfortable with that and discuss the issues brought up.

"Giving a child a chance to privately vent and then moving toward a discussion about how she feels in school can be very helpful to both of you. Maybe there are things you can do as a parent to make things better, from more understanding at home to involvement with the school system to political action around gun laws, better mental health access and other issues that will ultimately improve the safety of schools for all.

'Secrets' was selected for inclusion in "Passages: Women in Transition," Women In Media - Newark's 2018 Women's History Month film festival, held on March 27 – April 5, 2018 at Rutgers University Newark, New Jersey, and at various satellite venues in the area.

'Falling in Love, A Coming of Age, Selfie Film, is detailed in a new ebook: 'A Selfie Film - Falling In Love' by Dr. Holstein. This ebook presents issues and stories behind the creation of Dr. Holstein's "selfie films", which utilize cutting edge New Media technology. Topics and questions for discussion can be used by a parent and a child, or a group of hundreds as universal subjects of growing up and handling tough issues are presented.

ABC Series Premier, 'Selfie': Dr. Barbara Becker Holstein, Positive Psychologist, Offers Insight

Selfies, now a primary means for self expression, have struck a chord with mainstream America for many reasons, the term now making it as the title of a mainstream network show. Dr. Holstein believes selfies can be a valid form of self expression

A new series, 'Selfie' will premier on ABC television this month. The show's central character begins to realize that  having 'friends' on Facebook is not the same as having real friends.

"Next week," Dr. Holstein stated, "we will be watching the first episode. Based loosely on the Eliza Dooley character, we get to follow the new Eliza trying to leave her habit of instant gratification via social media. Henry enters her arena to change her from a vapid person, always distracting herself via social media from her feelings, into a meaningful person who can leave narcissism behind."

"As a positive psychologist what I find fascinating about this sit-com is that the show clearly presents some of the downsides of filling our lives with Facebook friends, rather than taking the time to establish meaningful face to face friendships.  'Being friended is not the same as having friends.' 'A new show that pulls your head out of your cloud.'  However, the show's name Selfie promotes the notion that selfies in and of themselves promote narcissism and a lack of connecting with the rest of the world.  This is far from the truth. Selfies, as I've mentioned before, allow people to finally have access to a fast way to record: a new form of personal diary, for themselves and/or to connect their personal lives with friends and family.  The real culprits are not selfies, but rather a complex combination of factors in the ways we live that push us into instant time chunks, clearly augmented by the social media structure, that don't help us as human beings to feel connected, safe, loved, befriended, relaxed and just happy to be alive and taking our time with life."

Dr. Holstein is fascinated with how selfies have impacted society, and the effects on teens and tweens. She recently released "The Truth, Diary Of A Gutsy Tween". The new book is a revised and expanded edition of her very successful book, 'The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything'. The new book is published by Sky Pony Press.

A Facebook page, thetruthforgirls, highlights many of the topics woven into "The Truth".  Articles, videos, remarks, conversations, visuals, on this page center around many of the issues that tweens face growing up.  These include: self-esteem issues, quarreling in families, divorce, moving to a new home, a new school, best friends, a crush, bullies, a death in the family, money issues, not feeling pretty, feeling sad, feeling lonely, jealousy and more. Dr. Holstein's book for teens and tweens is a first in using fiction for embedding positive psychology concepts.

Her second book in The Truth Series is “Secrets: You Tell Me Yours and I’ll Tell You Mine…Maybe!”  Now the girl is 13. She handles many adolescent issues, including a crush, moving, a death in the family, feeling fat and problems with girlfriends.  'Secrets' provides a book kids and parents and grandparents can share and use as a sounding board for needed communication between the generations.

Both “The Truth” and “Secrets” are great for parents, grandparents, older siblings and teachers to establish lines of communication with the tweens and teens in their lives. Both books are being re-released by Sky Pony Press.

Dr. Holstein believes that getting in touch with one's strengths, talents and potential at every age, as well as learning how to hold on to the wise, playful, happy, gutsy and energetic girl that still resides within each woman is essential for mental health.
