Life After Death, The Death Of A Child, And The Challenges Of Loss - Author And NDE Expert Brian McLaughlin Issues Statement

The parent/child bond is addressed by McLaughlin from an entirely unique perspective, as he met his father during his near death experience. That experience is detailed in his multi-award winning book, 'A Flight Without Wings'

Nobody wants to face the challenge of dealing with the loss of a loved one. This is especially true when that loss is the loss of a child. For it is then that plans for the future turn into memories of the past.

Though our family, friend, counselors and clergy want to help us, nobody can give us what we need most of all. Kind words can only go so far. Well intentioned advice necessarily falls far short. The challenge faced by grieving parents is a challenge very few people can understand. At the heart of that challenge is an overwhelming need on the part of survivors for assurance that the deceased is really okay.

Brian McLaughlin recently addressed these concerns in a piece posted on his site. He stated, in part, "Life After Death is a challenging concept for all of us when facing the loss of someone special and the Death of a Child especially. Family dynamics change and personal relationships may suffer. Parents who face the Death of a Child may feel that their whole 'game plan' has been violated. The addition of children into a family creates a focus that seems to supersede all. Should those parents experience the Death of a Child, the focus is so disrupted that it proves to be difficult to recover from."

"This would be considered true for a death of any family member, or friend. Plans for the future turn into memories of the past. I don’t think it is ever a matter of finding a way to refocus or replace, but rather a matter of management. I have found that allowing a place to memorialize the person works better than expecting to forget. Talking about the loved one seems to be more cathartic than not. Frustration and hurt appear to remain on the front burner and becomes very disruptive in one’s life going forward."

"Investigating and accepting the possibility of an afterlife may prove to be a help in managing your loss. In my case, my short visit to Heaven has afforded me a different perspective on death and loss. I know from my event that I was comfortable, fulfilled and at peace. It changed my whole concept of loss. Although obviously it still hurts, some of the concerns about the loved one being 'OK' are satisfied.”

The full statement is available at McLaughlin's site.

Brian's book about his near death experience, 'A Flight Without Wings' offers readers a look at the near death experience from an unbiased point of view. It is the presentation of the material that sets this book apart from the other books about the near death experience. It is raw and it's real. There is no embellishment and no hidden agenda. While his book has a spiritual flavor certainly, there is no preaching and no religious messages. It is his near-death experience, just as it happened.

McLaughlin's experience changed the course of his life forever.  It instilled in him what we all seek - certainty about life after death. And with that a peace of  mind that can never be shaken, nor can it be doubted. His near death experience brought a sense of clarity. It brought a sense of real, lasting peace. He now knows with certainty that we exist forever. It is that simple message he brings to his audience, both through his book and at his speaking engagements and in his media appearances.

Brian has won numerous awards. He was chosen as one of '50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading' in both the 2015 and 2016 Book Awards.

Reviews of 'A Flight Without Wings' have been overwhelmingly positive. Dr. Penny Sartori, author of 'The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences', said "This book will help others who have had an NDE to make sense of their experience and will also help those close to someone who has had an NDE because NDEs affect close family members and friends too."

Jack Magnus, a reviewer with Readers Favorite, called the book a "well written and moving memoir that neither delves into the fanciful or dogmatic,...”  "…Well worth reading, and is highly recommended." Another stated, "Being a mother who lost her only child I found it to be a great comfort to me." Another said, "I have read many accounts such as these, but this beautifully written account simply touched my heart in ways that previous ones have not."

A review posted by a reader stated, ”I was advised to read this book after I lost my 18 year old daughter and 40 days later, my mother. I was really struggling with faith and where my daughter was, if she was ok, at peace, happy? All the things people tell you. This book helped me tremendously. Gave me the peace I very much needed and also the hope that I will see her again when it's my turn. . . . This is the book I always need to have in my collection, because unfortunately, with such a tragic loss I would need to read it again and again to keep the peace inside. I actually have given as gifts to people who like me are struggling. Thank you Brian McLaughlin."

Mark Feuerstein, Actor (Royal Pains, USA Network, Prison Break, 9JKL) wrote: “I have read it and I think it’s an inspiring tale of deep insight and so personal and yet so universal . . . such profound perspective.”

Life After Death, The Death Of A Child, Grief, Fear, And Moving Forward - Author And NDE Expert Brian McLaughlin Issues Statement

The parent/child bond is addressed by McLaughlin from an entirely unique perspective, as he met his father during his near death experience. That experience is detailed in his multi-award winning book, 'A Flight Without Wings'

The parent/child bond is unlike any other relationship in the human experience. It is the strongest of connections. While many life situations can impact the parent/child bond, death seems to sever that bond finally. But does it really? Perhaps not.

Whether a parent loses a child, or a child loses a parent, there is an overwhelming need on the part of survivors for assurance that the deceased is really okay. It seems impossible to move forward. Even if we do, we often experience guilt simply because we are moving forward.

Brian McLaughlin recently addressed these concerns in a piece posted on his site. He stated, in part, "For parents who have experienced the death of a child, the pain of that loss lingers with little satisfaction or resolution. The natural instinct to protect lasts as long, or longer than the immediate grief.  Some say it is unnatural, while others say the void remains forever. Although I have not had that exact experience, I have had a similar enough event happen that has given me some clarity."

"I found in my brief visit to Heaven, that all is good. No loneliness, no longing to come back, no pain."

"Very few spoken words needed there, as an all consuming love seemed to blanket all concerns. I speak of a hard to describe pure love. With it, a connection to energies of most that have passed. I personally felt a superior intelligence that brought peace, understanding, and clarity through the light that surrounded all."

"I shared only a few spoken words with my then deceased father.  He came and found me on my journey to somehow open this portal of knowledge and pure love. That allowed me to return with heightened senses of clarity, and intuition, as well as a feeling of complete peace. I was comfortable and satisfied  where I was, not wanting to return. Though disappointed, I gave in to his instruction to go back”.

The Death Of A Child - Author And NDE Expert Brian McLaughlin Hopes To Offer Reassurance To Grieving Parents

McLaughlin's book about his NDE details his totally unique near death experience. It is raw and it's real. There is no embellishment, no preaching and no hidden agenda

The loss of a child is the most devastating loss imaginable. There can be no greater pain. It is an event that is, for some, beyond the ability to endure. It is a tragedy that respects no boundaries - it happens regardless of station or status. Eric Clapton brought the issue to light in his song “Tears In Heaven”, in which questions are posed about not knowing if the parent will know their child if they see him/her in Heaven. Is the loss permanent, the relationship broken forever? Author Brian McLaughlin knows the answers to those questions and he hopes to offer some assurance not only to Eric Clapton, but to all parents everywhere. In his book and in his public appearances, he attempts to give everyone, not just parents, a message can provide some measure of comfort.

"I have had the opportunity to speak to a a number of people who have experienced this loss and had the same questions", McLaughlin stated. "I was able to share my knowledge with them and bring some comfort to their lives by explaining what happened to me.  I saw and spoke to my deceased father who appeared to be 30 or so years younger than when he passed, yet I knew him right away...my Dad , no question.  He knew me as well, and somehow knew to be there at that exact moment to greet me. We didn’t speak of how different we each looked. I had no mirror, so I didn’t know if my injuries were evident in my appearance or not.  The 'issues' we had between us here on earth were absent, and we only shared a few moments of purity that superseded  all else.  He then told me I had to go back."

"Comfort and peace in the grief process is not just for the average person like myself.  It is available to all, even to celebrities such as Eric Clapton who may come to realize that fame and fortune cannot provide the answers to the questions.  I have spent countless hours being frustrated by the fact that I have those answers and can unlock the doors of grief and sadness that plague them but, like ships that pass in the night, our worlds will likely not overlap, and so that grief and sadness lingers."

Brian's book about his near death experience, 'A Flight Without Wings' offers readers a look at the near death experience from an unbiased point of view. It is the presentation of the material that sets this book apart from the other books about the near death experience. It is raw and it's real. There is no embellishment and no hidden agenda. Inspirational Book, 'The Caleb Years: When God Doesn't Make Sense' Earns Honorable Mention In Foreword Reviews Indiefab Book Of The Year Awards

'The Caleb Years' is a refreshing and inspirational account of the journey through treacherous waters of uncertainty and deep emotional wounds parents of chronically ill children must endure

'The Caleb Years' by David Ingerson has earned the Honorable Mention in Foreword Reviews Indiefab Book Of The Year Awards for the best indie books of 2014.

Winners were chosen from over 1,500 entries in 63 categories by a select panel of librarians and booksellers. Winners were announced during the American Library Association Annual Conference in San Francisco on June 26. This year’s list of winners includes the Dalai Lama, Lev Grossman, Jeet Heer, Chuck Palahniuk, Zack Whedon, Georges Jeanty, Lee & Low Books, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Kent State University Press, Rizzoli, Abingdon Press, Quirk Books, Cleis Press, and Six Sisters Stuff.

'The Caleb Years' is a refreshing and inspirational account of the author’s journey through the treacherous waters of uncertainty and the deep emotional wounds parents of  chronically ill children must endure. It chronicles the medical maladies and life-stirring challenges Ingerson and his family faced after his fourth child, Caleb, was born with a major congenital heart defect (CHD)--as does Bret Baier's book, 'Special Heart: A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage and Love.'

"I am very pleased," Ingerson stated, "that my book has been recognized by this competitive award. I believe my story will be helpful to many others as they read how we faced and overcame the challenges all parents experience when their children suffer with life-and-death medical struggles."

Ingerson encourages his grieving readers to also read the inspirational book 'Losing Cooper: Finding Hope to Grieve Well, ' by J.J. Jasper. For those that are seeking further inspiration in dealing with the questions of suffering, Ingerson highly recommends one of Max Lucado's latest books, 'You'll Get Through This - Hope and Help for Your Turbulent Times,' as well as Philip Yancey's recent book, 'The Question That Never Goes Away: Why?.' Likewise, Ingerson enjoyed reading 'Tuesdays with Morrie,' by Mitch Albom during his tumultuous Caleb years. For further inspiration he also heartily recommends 'Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,' by Laura Hillenbrand.

To fight for the life of a child with a long-drawn-out chronic illness is agonizing enough, but to then lose that child, as the Ingerson family did, as the result of the reckless behavior of another—a blood donor giving his potentially HIV-tainted blood despite his known at-risk behavior--is beyond words.  Despite his raging anger, Ingerson did not seek vengeance when faced with this very situation. Instead, he took action and vowed to do something to help prevent this type of tragedy from happening to others.

Although we may not be able to determine the final outcome of such tragic situations, we can decide how we are going to live each day – with hope and thankfulness or with anger and bitterness. David Ingerson and his family, as intensely described in this inspirational story chose the way of hope, even when facing the menace of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and the dread of HIV. While it did not take away their pain, it did give them the strength to live each day with meaning.

Phillip Yancey, 'NYT' best-selling author of 'The Jesus I Never Knew' states, “I have read the full account of Caleb’s life in ‘The Caleb Years’, and I’m glad I did. Especially, I appreciated that David didn’t offer saccharine answers. He showed the raw, up-and-down vulnerability that always accompanies such a trial.”

Eugene H. Peterson, best-selling author and translator of ‘The Message’ and Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College said, "Caleb was born with several undiagnosed congenital anomalies and endured ten major surgeries. His father writes the story, saturated with both pain and prayer, but remarkably without a trace of bitterness. His marvelous witness written with such skill, crafted in language honest and vivid, will not fail to deepen the faith and joy of all who trust God."

"Faith and forgiveness are two key themes of our story. Our faith was tested when after our son was born with CHD, so many asked, 'Why was Caleb born this way?' Also, in that our son was infected with HIV due to the irresponsible action of a donor who knew of his at-risk behavior but chose to keep quiet about it and donate his blood anyway, we were forced to face the difficult question, 'Can we forgive the donor for his reprehensible act?'"

The Boston Marathon Bombing And The Desire For Vengeance - Author David Ingerson Shows Us There Is An Alternative

Ingerson's inspirational book, 'The Caleb Years', illustrates how the devastating loss of a child can inspire hope

The desire for vengeance is a natural reaction to a senseless act of terrorism that results in the death of someone we love. The death sentence handed down to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, in many ways, seems more appropriate than forcing him to spend the rest of his life locked in a tiny cell. Why? It brings closure. It is final. It closes a chapter. It gives the families of victims the opportunity to move on.

Moving ahead with one's life after a senseless tragedy is no easy task. Everybody handles it in their own unique way. When a loved one dies a senseless death, a void is created. For some, that gaping hole is filled with heartbreak and bitterness. The desire for vengeance is justifiable.

David Ingerson's moving and compelling book about the life and untimely death of his son Caleb shows us how heartbreak and bitterness can be transformed into hope and thankfulness.

To lose someone to a single act of terrorism is horrific—there is no warning. And to lose a child to chronic illness, as Ingerson's family did is agonizing—particularly when dreaded and anticipated over a span of time. But to lose a child as the result of reckless irresponsibility on the part of a blood donor is beyond words. When it happened to Ingerson, despite his raging anger, he did not seek vengeance. Instead, he took action and vowed to do something to help others prevent these types of tragedies.

'The Caleb Years' is a refreshing and inspirational account of the author’s journey through the treacherous waters of uncertainty and the deep emotional wounds parents of a chronically ill child must endure. The author’s vivid descriptions of each circumstance and deeply compelling emotion puts readers in the middle of his story. Even more importantly, this inspirational book will help readers understand their own life story.

Although we may not be able to determine the final outcome, we can decide how we are going to live each day – with hope and thankfulness or with bitterness. Author David Ingerson's Inspirational Book, 'The Caleb Years', Shows Us How The Devastating Loss Of A Child Can Inspire Hope

Ingerson's moving and compelling book about the life and untimely death of his son Caleb shows us how heartbreak and bitterness can be transformed into hope and thankfulness

If we will admit it (and most of us won't), we are collectively fascinated by tragedy. From the catastrophic earthquake in Nepal, to rioting in Baltimore, and school shootings in various places in the United States, from terrorist attacks all over the world to genocide in faraway countries, we watch with rapt attention while these horrific events unfold. If there is a God in charge of the universe, what could He possibly be thinking? And again, (if we will simply admit it), somewhere deep inside we secretly celebrate the fact that is it happening over there, out there - anywhere but here. We like to believe it could never happen to us.

However it doesn't always happen to somebody out there or over there. Sometimes it happens right here.

The death of a child is not only the most horrific type of tragedy but also a parent’s worst nightmare. We realize we have lost something we never imagined we could lose. To lose a child to chronic illness is bad enough, but to lose a child as the result of senseless irresponsibility is beyond words. If God does have a plan for each of us, then perhaps that plan seems to make no sense at all. When faced with such a mind-numbing event, what do we do? Overwhelmed with grief, many simply give up. Some never recover. Only a few take action and vow to do something to help others prevent these types of tragedies. David Ingerson is one of the latter. A stalwart supporter of safe blood donation, he encourages everyone who is qualified and risk-free to become a regular blood donor. He supports his local blood center, LifeShare Blood Centers in Shreveport, Louisiana. More information on the organization is available at their website.

While it did not take away their pain, it did give them the strength to live with meaning even when God didn’t seem to make sense.

"I wrote this book," Ingerson stated, "to encourage others that although there will be times in our lives when we face trials seemingly beyond our ability to endure, we can live through these dark valleys of loneliness and agony if we will be patient and honest with our difficult emotions. Although the years of our son's short life were characterized by intense medical drama, agonizing turmoil and uncertainty wherein we daily faced the unnerving possibility or our son's early death, the years immediately following his untimely death were filled with numbing sorrow, grief and pain. Somehow, we chose to live and eventually rose above the anguish of those years that came to be known as the 'Caleb years'. As I reflected back upon the dismal despair I'd lived through during those years, I began to realize that I had a story to tell that could be helpful for someone else.Hence, came 'The Caleb Years'."

'The Caleb Years' has received rave reviews from readers. Phillip Yancey, 'NYT' best-selling author of 'The Jesus I Never Knew' stated, “I have read the full account of Caleb’s life in The Caleb Years, and I’m glad I did. My book is a gift and a means of connection for both survivors and supporters. So, I'm honored to give copies away in memory of heroes who are gone but not forgotten."

The events in New York City on September 11, 2001, took a horrific tool on both victims and survivors. 9-11 facts provided on the New York Magazine website show that:

3051 children lost a parent
1609 people lost a spouse or partner
1717 families never recovered any remains

Profile:

Denise Hall Brown is a survivor in every sense of the word. Born in a small town in Maryland, Denise’s first 29 years of life were pretty standard.  In fact, life was good.  Things changed, however, right before her 30th birthday, when Denise’s mother was killed by a drunk driver.  In the days, weeks, and months that followed, Denise had a difficult time adjusting to life without her mother.  In fact, she says she “lost her mind” and felt that she had been the one to "die" in that car accident.  A defining moment for Denise came a few months after the accident, when she remembers feeling sorry for herself as she thought about all she had lost and the unfairness of it all.  In an instant, Denise heard her mother’s voice telling her to stop being a victim.  That forced her to change both her perspective and her approach.  Despite enduring three more sudden and tragic losses since that time, Denise no longer sees herself as death’s victim.  Instead, she is a survivor who honors her loved ones by reaching out to others as they navigate grief’s long journey.

Denise is a leader. In writing the 2Grieve2Gether book and creating a companion organization, Denise hopes to use those two vehicles to be the preeminent source of information, tools and products that comfort the world’s survivors and supporters as they navigate the grief process and maximize their lives. She hopes to revolutionize the grief care industry by creating forums to increase awareness, connecting people to existing information and resources, and creating new tools to assist with the healing process and to serve as Grief Consultants, helping survivors and supporters deal with the practical side of grief, including its emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial components.

Pat Bluth, Author Of From Pain To Peace, To Speak At St. Thomas By The Sea In Orange Beach, Alabama On February 3, 2010

Author Pat Bluth will discuss grief, bereavement, healing and the journey to forgiveness. Bluth lost her teen daughter at the hands of a drunk driver and shares her story regarding how the death of a child allows rage to be transformed into forgiveness

Pat Bluth, author of From Pain To Peace, will speak at St. Thomas By The Sea Catholic Church in Orange Beach Alabama on February 3, 2010.

Ms. Bluth will share her story regarding how her life changed after the death of her 17 year old daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. She will describe in detail what happened on that night and how it felt to go from planning for a graduation to planning for a funeral. She will also share how she felt victimized by the Criminal Justice system, resulting in her starting a chapter of MADD in her county.

“I wrote this book,” stated Ms. Bluth, “because I believe I have a story to share that offers hope and inspiration to others that have suffered a loss. As a grief counselor, I learned that many people get stuck in their grief, anger, or unresolved feelings. I wanted to share that grief is a process that doesn’t have to control your life forever. Forgiveness was something I thought was impossible after my 17 year old daughter was killed by a drunk driver. I was wrong. My book describes in detail what I did on an 8-day silent retreat to heal. Others can follow this process.”

After the death of her daughter, Ms. Bluth started a MADD chapter inher county. She also attended Compassionate Friends meetings, a support group for parents whose children have died, and began journaling.

“All these things helped,” stated Ms. Bluth, “but I found no lasting peace. Four years later I felt suicidal and called out to God for help. I talked to my priest and at his suggestion I attended an 8 day silent retreat. That was the answer for finding peace.”

Ms. Bluth will share her story at St. Thomas By The Sea Catholic Churchin Orange Beach Alabama on February 3, 2010 at the Parish Hall. Ms. Bluth is available for speaking engagements and interviews and can be contacted using the information below or by email at pat@patbluth.com.

Copies of her book, From Pain To Peace, are available at her website at www.patbluth.com and from most major online booksellers.
