Human Trafficking, A Form of Modern Day Slavery, Is Now A Major Problem In Texas Says Monica Deller, Founder And CEO Of Trauma To Triumph Family Ranches

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), forced labor alone (one component of human trafficking) generates an estimated $150 billion in profits per annum as of 2014. In 2012, the ILO estimated that 21 million victims are trapped in modern day slavery. Of these, 14.2 million (68%) were exploited for labor, 4.5 million (22%) were sexually exploited, and 2.2 million (10%) in state-imposed forced labor. The International Labor Organization has reported that child workers, minorities, and irregular migrants are at considerable risk of more extreme forms of exploitation.

In 2016 – in one of his first major initiatives – Attorney General Paxton formed the Human Trafficking and Transnational/Organizational Crime Section (HTTOC), tasked with combatting human trafficking across our state. There are 234,000 Victims of labor trafficking in Texas any given time. This section has already won significant battles against human traffickers, including developed and produced a powerful training video – designed to mobilize all Texans to “Be the One” in the fight against human trafficking.

According to a report from The Human Trafficking Institute, 74 criminal human trafficking cases made their way through federal courts in Texas last year.

Austin, Texas – The state of Texas has some work to do when it comes to human trafficking, according to a report from The Human Trafficking Institute.

The report, released Tuesday, shows Texas ranked first in the nation for the number of criminal cases that wound their way through the federal courts last year. Of those 74 cases, 68 involved sex trafficking and six involved labor trafficking.

Texas also ranked first for the number of new criminal human trafficking cases in 2018 with 19 initiated cases. That’s well above the national average of five new cases per state or territory.

Of the new criminal cases, the report shows Texas initiated two criminal labor trafficking cases last year, making Texas one of seven states or territories to initiate a new labor trafficking prosecution.

Another piece on KidsHealth.com listed movies, nightmares, war and others. In short, kids hold many fears. It is up to parents to help them overcome that long list of fears. Delores Miles' upcoming kids book will help parents help children overcome those fears through an engaging story about sharing their feelings and their fears.

'Don’t Be Afraid. Be Brave' is a story written to help children age 1 to 10 realize they are not alone with their feelings and fears. With sensitivity and humor, it allows each reader realize it is okay to openly share their fears. Upsilon Nu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has named Dr. Joyce Willard Teal “2010 Woman of the Year". She also announces the release of her newest book, Are You Raising One Of The Next Generation of Hoodlums. In honor of National Children's Book Week, Dr. Teal will be holding a drawing and will award a copy of the book to the winner.

Upsilon Nu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has named Dr. Joyce Willard Teal '2010 Woman of the Year'. In addition, the chapter's scholarship, which is awarded annually to a high school graduate who pursues post secondary education, has been named the Dr. Joyce Willard Teal’s Scholarship.

Dr. Joyce Willard Teal is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. She received a PH.D. in Counseling from Chelsea University and a Doctorate in Christian Counseling from Jacksonville Theological Seminary.

While teaching in Atlanta, Georgia where she lived and taught for six years, she was voted Teacher of the Year at the school, Long Middle School, and was an award-winning teacher in the Dallas Independent School District from which she retired in 2004. Her career path, however, took her through New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Virginia where she taught at the college level as well as reading/language arts to boys and girls in the public schools.

She began writing professionally in 1995 and has had several award-winning poems published. Her first book, It’s O.K. Since 1995, Dr. Teal has written numerous books for adolescents, including her trilogy in the “Don’t Sweat It, Kid" Series. The trilogy is targeted for an adolescent audience. Since Dr. Teal spent the bulk of her career as a teacher of language arts in middle school, she has written several books for youth at this level.

Author Richard Palombi has released his new book, The Geronimo Corndogs, a hilarious look at the adventures of three friends who fall in with John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd and Billie Frechette. The book serves as a follow up to his first novel, Open The Door Richard.

The Geronimo Corndogs turns the world of gangsters and criminal icons on its head. When the fourth member of their bowling team turns out to be gangster John Dillinger, three lifelong friends find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Dubbed The Geronimo Corndogs by the press, each is assigned a mentor-in-crime from Dillinger’s gang: John Luther becomes the reluctant ward of Babyface Nelson and his over-protective wife, Helen Gillis. Reynaldo’s tutor, Pretty Boy Floyd, is forever getting the two of them lost on one ill-advised shortcut or another while reminiscing about growing up in the Cookson Hills, “the paste capital of the world.” Demoted to dog care duties for Dillinger’s gun moll, Billie Frechette, the bumbling Augustus soon finds himself reviled as a pet felon and the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Having Melvin Purvis and the F.B.I. hot on their trail was bad enough, but when PETSA and its legions of animal rights activists join in the hunt, the chase is on for real.

Profile:

Retired with five grandchildren, Richard Palombi wrote jokes and monologues for various stand-up comedians in the seventies and eighties. He later started a street ministry for at-risk teens in Houston, Texas and became involved in prison ministry.

He was also a chaplain at Harris County Jail until moving to Austin, where he worked in various psychiatric hospitals and recovery centers. He’s written three novels: Open the Door, Richard; Big Son ‘n Little Son; and The Geronimo Corndogs.

As Obama Raises The Education Bar, Dr. Joyce Teal's Trilogy Offers 100 Practical Solutions For Adolescents

Dr. Joyce Teal’s 'Don’t Sweat It Kid' series demonstrates that getting off to a good start early is the key to success in later life

President Obama has suggested that states begin to broaden their standards of proficiency for schools beyond math and reading skills. Obama hopes that schools will become creative in providing more life skills to youth. The goal is to prepare students not only to graduate from high school, but to set children on the path to success in both life and career. Dr. Joyce Teal has developed a program that can help accomplish that goal.

Her trilogy, ‘Don’t Sweat It Kid’, has been designed to accomplish this goal. “This trilogy,” stated Dr. Teal, “will help adolescents get a grip on the reality that they do not have to sweat the small stuff, and with the realization that most of it is small stuff. The series contains 100 topics relevant to the lives of adolescents and are loaded with information that will provoke thought and affect positive changes in adolescents' behavior and way of thinking regarding ordinary occurrences and experiences in their lives.”

Don’t Sweat It, Kid consists of three volumes that are loaded with information and scenarios that are designed to provoke thought and affect positive changes in the behavior and way of thinking about ordinary occurrences and experiences in the lives of young people, ages eleven through eighteen.

Don’t Sweat It, Kid is the first of three volumes. It consists of the first 33 of 100 topics that the three volumes contain. Volume 2, Hang in There, Kid, consists of topics 34 through 65. Volume 3, entitled Just Do It, Kid consists of topics 66 through 100. These 100 topics have been chosen because of their pertinence to the life of young people. Youth are encouraged to read the trilogy with an open mind and to share it with a friend. It can potentially help them to become a better person, a more giving family member and a wonderful role model for the younger kids who are part of their world.

“The 'Dont Sweat It, Kid' Series," stated Dr. Teal, “will assist adolescents with problem-solving solutions to problems they frequently encounter. Joyce Willard Teal is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. She is an award-winning retired teacher. She has taught school in Dallas for six years, but her career path has taken her through New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Virginia where she taught community college and reading/language arts to boys and girls in the public schools.

Mrs. Teal began writing professionally in 1993 and has had several award-winning poems published. Her first book, It’s O.K. To Be Different, was written for boy and girls between the ages of nine and fifteen, but has universal appeal and is being read by children as well as adults. It is now in its fourth printing.

Don’t Sweat It Kid is Volume 1 of a trilogy. The three volumes contain 100 topics relevant to the lives of adolescents.
